KIDS & TEEN PROGRAMS AGES 6 - 13

 KIDS’ POTTERY

All skill levels, ages 6 - 13 Kids will have the opportunity to craft a variety of items in this fun, hands on class and discover different clay building techniques. All projects made during the course will be glazed and kiln fired. This pottery session is suitable for all skill levels. (Minimum attendance 7; maximum 8) Craft Centre, Room #3 Instructor: Theresa Nelson Date: Wednesdays, Jan 19 - Feb 23 Time: 4 - 5:30pm Fee: $110, registration fee includes clay and other supplies, use of tools, firing, etc.

 PAPER MACHÉ ANIMALS

In this fascinating paper maché animal sculpting course, participants will build an animal of their choosing, while getting into an ooey-gooey, heavenly mess! They will be guided through the process of building the framework and adding parts to their animal, then painting them! Please bring an old shirt and a snack. POTTERY  INTERMEDIATE POTTERY NEW!

This courses is geared toward people with some pottery experience and a solid foundation in throwing procedures. The first Saturday is devoted to altering thrown pieces and advanced trimming techniques.  POTTERY STUDIO

Participate in your craft on an ongoing basis, enjoy the camaraderie of other potters and use Craft Centre facilities/ equipment. Studio time participants must have a current WAACC membership and some pottery experience.*Studio time participants are expected to help clean up after their studio session and assist with other minor tasks related to operating the facilities during studio time. DRAWING & PAINTING & OTHER ART FORMS  LINO PRINTING

This is an exciting art form originating in ancient China but still very prolific in today’s times. It can be done inexpensively at home with few tools and supplies. using a lino plate and drawing, participants can create many copies of their art work – and they are all original! If you enjoy being creative, this class is for you! (Minimum number is 5; maximum 10) Craft Centre, Room #2 Instructor: Virginia Anderson Date: Thursdays, Feb 2 & 9 Time: 7 - 9pm Fee: $35 Registration Fee; Supply Fee $35 payable to instructor at first class No previous experience required.

 ROCK PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS

Learn the basics of painting on small rocks to turn them into objects of art; learn what to use on rocks, how to clean them, the supplies needed and how to start your own painted rock collection. Painted artwork could include a ladybug, a gnomes’ cottage or some other object. Painted rocks make excellent little gifts!  WATERCOLOURS - SMALL PAINTINGS FOR BEGINNERS

Never painted in watercolours but want to give it a try? You will learn how to apply various techniques to create a small painting.. This class will give you the ground work to get you started in this delightful medium. Supply kit purchased at first class, extra supplies can come from home and the instructor will provide some.  CHALK PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS

Learn the basics of chalk painting. Get an antique or vintage look on metal, glass, or new or old wood. Start combing the basement or garage sales for those items you want to make over. Learn about project prep, applying paint and finishing with waxes and topcoats. Participants will take home three useful projects, including a wooden shelf. (Minimum participants is 3; maximum 10) Craft Centre, Room #2 Instructor: Terry Demoline Date: Saturday, Jan 28 Time: 10am - 1pm Fee: $65 (includes supplies and materials) No previous experience required.  CHALK PAINTING - GETTING THAT AGED LOOK Carrying the beginners’ course one step further….In this class, you will learn about other products called ‘glazes’. You will also learn how to colour your own waxes! Take home a gorgeous finished wood tray as well as a number of other projects. Course fee includes all supplies and materials. Choose one of the dates and times below.  CHALK PAINTING - ADDING THE ROYAL TOUCH

In short, how to add the glitz and glamour to your pieces! Aka…..BLING! You will be working with chalk paints and mica metallic powders on a stunning large framed mirror to take home. As well, you will be using and learning about liquid Matallix paint on another take home project. (Minimum participants is 3; maximum 10) Craft Centre, Room #2 Instructor: Terry Demoline Date: Saturday, Mar 11 Time: 10am - 1pm Fee: $75 (includes supplies and materials) Some previous experience recommended.

 SIP OF ART

Once a month Sip-of-Art comes to the Centre, where a new painting is launched. Develop your art in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere with this great group of folks at the WAACC. Supplies are provided. Go to margotsoltice.ca to see all the paintings available. Aimed at all skill levels; learn basic brushstroke techniques, a little colour theory, and blending. FABRIC ARTS  HARDANGER

Scandinavian embroidery traditionally worked with white thread on white cloth, using counted thread and drawn thread work techniques. New students will learn basic stitches of hardanger and advanced students will work on projects. At the first class, you will be advised what notions to buy – most can be purchased from the instructor. (Minimum participants is 6; maximum 15) Craft Centre, Room #2 Instructor: Arlie Franklin Date: Feb 6 - Mar 27 (except Feb 20) Time: 1 - 4pm Fee: $45 for 7 classes plus supplies *Supplies purchased from facilitator; starter kit $15 No previous experience needed.

 SCRAP QUILTING WORKSHOP NEW!

Create a one of a kind quilt using scraps - start by learning a little color savvy, then work on squares and triangles to plan a quilt with pizzazz! This workshop is suitable for seasoned quilters as well as people with basic quilting skills. Bring sewing machine, notions and quilting supplies/ tools – a supply list will be emailed to each registrant.  BRAZILIAN EMBROIDERY

This ancient craft of three dimensional embroidery is for beginners or the more experienced. Teachings will include a variety of stitches to create amazing, beautiful designs. Students should bring a 5” embroidery hoop and scissors.  QUILTING PROJECT TIME

A self directed “project time” time for beginner to intermediate quilters. Bring a new or existing project that you would like to work on. Facilitator provides coaching and support but no instruction. Iron and ironing board supplied. Participants must bring their own sewing machine, thread, quilting fabric, cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter and any other quilting supplies/ equipment needed.  PAVERPOL ART - FROM T-SHIRT TO GARDEN STATUE

 SPRING/EASTER DOOR WREATH

Learn to make a unique piece of garden art in only 8 hours by using Paverpol, a non-toxic hardener. Bring to Class: an old white 100% cotton t-shirt and a couple rolls of tin foil – all other supplies will be waiting for you to make the treasured garden art sculpture of your choice! Have fun making a new spring wreath for your front door. Inspired by Easter bunnies and colored eggs, you will create a ‘bubble wreath” using fun mesh ribbon in spring colors and/or burlap. Then you will decorate your wreath with artificial “bunny ears”, colored eggs, silk flowers to welcome spring in style. PHOTOGRAPHY  PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BEGINNERS - GET TO KNOW YOUR CAMERA

This workshop is geared to camera owners, beginners as well as experienced photographers, who want to learn more about the basics of their camera and improve their ‘point and shoot’ abilities to produce good quality photos. This is a great opportunity to enhance your photography skills and meet other photography enthusiasts. Bring your camera and manual to the class.  THE TEN MOST COMMON PHOTOGRAPHIC ERRORS NEW! How good are your photos? Maybe you are making one of the common mistakes? Here’s a hands-on workshop in which you will learn to spot mistakes, actually practice making mistakes and practice correcting your mistakes. Bring your digital camera and be prepared for fun. You will leave feeling far more confident in capturing those special ‘photo opp’ moments. An arty-party is a group of children or youth getting together for an art or craft experience. Birthdays and other special occasions are a great time to book an artyparty. Choose from a selection of pre-fired items to either glaze and have fired (fired objects to be picked up from the Craft Centre at a later date) or paint and seal to take home that day. Remember the past three decades with a timeline of successes and events, admire how your community donated artifact collection has developed, and of course delight in the pictures and stories of the people who made all of this possible.  WOMEN OF ASPENLAND

DISCOVER THE LIVES OF WOMEN WHO PLAYED A ROLE IN BUILDING YOUR COMMUNITY As an ongoing exhibit, the Heritage Museum pays tribute to the many women who made their own unique contribution to the communities of Wetaskiwin City,

County, and Maskwacis. The exhibit now includes 90 ladies, with new inductees being showcased each year. We are always looking for recommendations, so stop by, let our heroines inspire you, and nominate someone you know. Date & Time: Daily Free with admission, which is by donation

 PERMANENT EXHIBIT SPOTLIGHT FORGING HISTORY: BLACKSMITHS IN OUR COMMUNITY

Enter into the hot and smoky cavern of the blacksmith shop with our new permanent exhibit. Featuring local Blacksmith, Farriers, and their shops, this display has many tools you can get your hands on including a winding billow, horseshoe and hoof stomping station, and video demos of local blacksmiths. SPECIAL NOTICE WDHM YOUTH NETWORK: MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY Are you between the ages of 13 and 19 and searching for an exciting enterprise this year? Consider joining the WDHM Youth Network. This unique program will allow you to channel your charismatic talents in the marketing, design, education, and administration departments of a local non-profit institution. Aquafit Shallow Water – A fun and energetic aerobic exercise class, using the water for resistance with low to zero impact making it easy on bones and joints. Enjoy a 1-hour class set to music. Work at your own pace, no swimming skills required. Aquafit Deep Water – The natural buoyancy of the water reduces the strain on your joints, bones and muscles by as much as 90 percent. Deep water running takes advantage of buoyancy, providing the same cardiovascular workout as if you were running on solid ground. Participants may choose to use a buoyancy belt which suspends you, while still giving your whole body a total workout. Stretch ‘n Move – This class is perfect for seniors, people recovering from an injury, people with restricted mobility or those simply looking for light exercise. This fun class focuses on improving flexibility and mobility. Lane Swim – A time set aside for swimming lengths of the pool.

The City of Wetaskiwin Family and Community Services (FCSS) is pleased to present “COMPASS for the Caregiver”. This is a 9 module workshop and invites ANYONE who cares for a friend or a loved one that lives with a disability, illness or aging to attend. The COMPASS “workshop encourages caregivers to recognize that in order to care for a loved one, they must first care for themselves. Participants find their strength and accept their limitations as together they tackle some of the most challenging aspects of caregiving: the difficult emotions like guilt and resentment, dealing with family, friend and health professionals that just don’t understand, managing stress and depression, and finding time for themselves” (Alberta Caregivers Association, 2014, www.albertacaregivers.org). Volunteer Driver Program: The Volunteer Driver program supports seniors in our community. Door through door support provides additional assistance to seniors by helping them reach their destination. A Volunteer Driver is a community member with a clean criminal record check that holds a valid driver’s license and appropriate liability insurance. A Volunteer Driver donates their time to support community seniors by offering transportation services. Although a Volunteer Driver is not paid for their time, they are able to request a fee to cover their vehicle’s fuel and maintenance expenses prior to providing transportation services to a senior.

The Friendly Visitor program supports seniors in our community by providing regular social support to isolated seniors to help them remain connected to their community. A Friendly Visitor donates their time to support community seniors by offering weekly social support to isolated seniors to help them remain connected to their community. Some of the activities could include crafts, playing card games, musical activities, puzzles, knitting or enjoying coffee together!

Fraud is the biggest crime against older adults. Seniors are home during the day, are more trusting, and may not have someone close by to ask. Con artists will scam money through phone, internet or door-to-door. Fraud includes identity theft, credit card fraud, and banking. Be absolutely sure of who you are dealing with. Never give any money or information. Keep your documents safe; don’t carry your birth certificate, passport, or SIN card. Keep your PIN number private. Shred old bills. Do not open unknown emails. Never give out banking or personal information over the phone. Do not fall for time limited offers. Do not believe offers to send you money. Always double check identity of workers into your home. Report all frauds and scams to the local police or call PhoneBusters at 1-888-495-8501. If in doubt check with someone you trust.

Eligible ratepayers may include seniors, the disabled or those who may require some extra help while recovering from a hospital visit. Referrals can come from family members, friends, doctors, or themselves. A fee based on income is charged per hour and invoiced monthly. The County of Wetaskiwin No.10 recognizes the importance of supporting the long term sustainability of the County’s community facilities by providing funding for capital projects. The MSI Community Facility Funding Program provides nonprofit community groups with funding for capital improvement projects. The existence of the County’s funding program is contingent upon funding of the Municipal Sustainability Initiative which is a program of the Province of Alberta and as such may be subject to review or discontinued by the Province. All projects under this program must receive final approval by the Province of Alberta before funds are released. Applications are due April 30.  CEMETERY GRANTS

Grants are available for general maintenance costs incurred by those volunteer groups who maintain cemeteries within the County of Wetaskiwin. A maximum of $1,000 per cemetery may be available to assist groups with maintenance.  RECREATION GRANTS

The Council of the County of Wetaskiwin No. 10 supports active living for all ages within our community. Therefore Council is cognizant of the importance of providing funds to the various County Recreation Zones help enhance recreational opportunities. The County allocates funds annually to the County Regional Recreation Board. The funding is provided for the development of a broad range of recreation services that will provide opportunity for people of all ages to use their recreation time in a wholesome and satisfying manner. Council wishes to provide a fair and equitable set of guidelines for the distribution of Recreation funds through the County’s 5 Recreation Zones. For new Skype users or those wishing to learn more features about Skype.
