To learn more about Essential Skills & Workplace Education contact: 780-361-6241 • info@clcwetaskiwin.ca or 780-352-7257 • literacy@incentre.net
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND WORKPLACE EDUCATION What are Essential Skills?
Essential Skills are enabling skills that: Help people participate fully in the workplace and community Provide a foundation for other skills Enhance peoples ability to adapt to change in the workplace and manage transition in their lives The 9 Essential Skills are: Reading • Document use • Numeracy • Writing • Oral Communication • Working with others’ thinking • Computer use • Continuous learning Continuous Learning: Continuous learning extends from cradle to crypt! Lifelong learning can be self directed or supported by teachers, professors, instructors, employers, coworkers, mentors, family and friends. Lifelong learning takes many forms and occurs in many settings, including: Formal education in schools • Learning on the job • Literacy programs • Learning organizations • Learning at home • Collecting, sorting, analyzing information These skills are always used in conjunction with the other essential skills and are vital to productivity in the work place
COACHES CORNER
The Essential Skills of Continuous Learning Did you know? As we age, our literacy skills will decrease if we do not continue to learn and grow. This is especially true of individuals over the age of 50, as the loss of literacy skills diminishes more rapidly. Lifelong learning is critical for a healthy lifestyle. It ensures that we are able to apply knowledge and skills throughout life to help reach employment goals, enjoy a high quality of living and be active and responsible citizens. Alberta’s knowledge based economy depends on innovative, well educated, skilled and adaptable people who are able to respond to an ever changing society. This involves taking responsibility for keeping up to date on research and technology at work, identifying and pursuing areas for development and training that will enhance job performance, as well as being aware of ongoing organizational changes.

Recruiting Effective Board Members

Discussion about the benefits of building a strong board will be complemented with some practical tools that boards can use. Policies, Procedures and Bylaws - What are they?
Board Development Session by Videoconference Written guidelines for the governance of your organization can save you and your board time and energy, but sometimes it is hard to know what information should go in which documents. What are the differences between policies and bylaws? What about objects, and procedures? How do you ensure that what you have on file is adequate and useful? This session will provide practical tips to help your board function smoothly. Date: Wednesday, June 10 Presented by: Scott Vaughan, Alberta Culture, Community Development Unit
