Kids & Teens Children’s Introduction to Soapstone Carving NEW!

A brief course in carving and finishing soapstone for the younger audience (6-10).

Kid’s Glass Sun Catcher NEW! This is our version of “kid friendly” stained glass. A beautiful glass ornament to hang in a window, on a tree, or give as a gift (father’s day is coming up!). Your child will have fun creating this one of a kind item with glass bevels and beads. Ages 7 and up.

Kid’s Pottery Children will make a variety of items in this fun, hands on class and discover different clay building techniques (hand-building and wheel). All projects will be glazed and kiln fired. Ages 7 and up. All skill levels.

Jigsaw Hanging Lamp Kids and Teens-Easter Break Imagine the pride on your child’s face when they show off the funky hanging lamp that could add so much pizzazz to their room.

When my kids saw these, they all wanted one, including my teen and adult children. The hardest part will be choosing which colour(s) you want from the selection of 10. Teens Only Teen Stained Glass-Easter Break NEW! Students will complete a stained glass hanging from start to finish in two days. This class teaches the “copper foil” method of stained glass. The student will learn to cut the pattern, cut the glass, fit and grind, copperfoil and solder it together. The pattern will be a Dream Catcher. No previous experience required. Students should wear long sleeves and NO SANDALS. Bring an apron and SAFETY GLASSES. Please bring a bag lunch.

Teens And Adults Pottery - Studio Time Applicants must register for use of studio time, pay the fee and purchase the clay we provide at a cost which includes the firing and glazes. Registrants cannot expect instruction. Open to teenagers and adults with verified prior instruction.

Beginner and Intermediate Quilting Students will learn basic piecing skills and be introduced to a variety of patchwork techniques, including applique, paper piecing, machine quilting and hand quilting.

More experienced quilters will get help and ideas for an individual project of their own choosing. Instructors will bring a number of tools (cutting mats, rulers and rotary cutters) for group use but it is preferable to have your own equipment. Students must bring a sewing machine (in good working order), thread, fabric of their choice, cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter.

Art Journal-ling Workshops NEW! Much like a word journal, in which the writer tells their story, makes plans, expresses human emotion; joy, pain, love or sorrow, an Art Journal does the same except instead of using words as the primary method of expression, art is used. Beginners will relax into the “no judgement” approach, and seasoned artists will find space to allow looseness in their work.

For all, Art Journaling taps into that inner child who loves the freedom of expression that drawing and painting and mucking around will give. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn new mediums (or play with ones you know in a different way), some basic art tools and techniques. We will explore mixed medium, composition and colour, challenge the rules a little and enjoy the company of other art enthusiasts. Tea and light refreshments at break.

Brazilian Embroidery Learn stitches from the ancient craft of threedimensional embroidery to create beautiful designs. Enjoyable for the beginner, and the experienced crafter. Some supplies will be available at class. Students bring 5” embroidery hoop and scissors.

Absolute Beginner Lace Knitting (making holes on purpose) NEW! Skill level: knowledge of knit and purl stitches.

You will be introduced to basic techniques required to knit those lovely lace garments you’ve admired and been afraid to face. A sampler will be knit, beginning with yarn overs and moving up step by step.

Dream Catchers – Teens and Adults NEW!

Learn the 13,000 year old Aboriginal art of making tools with obsidian, a volcanic glass. Beginners will learn to fashion at least 3 projectile points, including their own arrowhead pendant. Intermediate students will move on to fashion implements and tools. Course fee includes supplies to complete a number of projects. Intermediate and Advanced Stained Glass

Get to Know your Digital Camera – For Absolute Beginners NEW!

For those who want to continue in this beautiful art form and have taken the beginner class. The intermediate project will be an oval panel approx. 12” x 16” with a more challenging pattern – a choice of two. Advanced students should have taken the intermediate course (or have equal experience) and will choose their own patterns. Students should wear long sleeves-NO SANDALS. Bring an apron, safety glasses and a bag lunch. Students are expected to spend 1/4 hour of class time for clean-up. Advanced students can arrange a time to meet with instructor during her beginner class to discuss their project.

Learn the Basics of how to operate your digital camera. Depending on the functions of your camera, you will learn about using your manual, parts of your camera and how it works, exposure modes and manual mode, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, depth of field and composition.

Beginner and Intermediate Sculpting in Clay NEW! Learn from famous sculptor! Beginning Students will learn how to sculpt with clay by doing animal figures. Nuno Silk and Felted Scarf NEW!

Leaded Stained Glass

Students will learn about basic felting with a special technique of felting onto a silk background. Beautiful results with combined fibres. If you love fabric, or do any fabric crafts, this skill can be used to accent clothing, quilts, home decor, etc.

The students will learn the traditional leaded construction of Stained Glass and make an approximately 8” square panel. This is usually the quickest method to make large panels.

Students should wear long sleeves-- NO SANDALS. Bring an apron, safety glasses and a bag lunch. Maximum of 6 students. No previous experience required.

Permaculture 1: A Gardener’s Delight NEW! This is a good course for beginner vegetable gardeners and masters alike. Food production is at the heart of Permaculture, and so is a good place to begin your journey into Earth’s natural ways of growing food. We will cover basic Permaculture design principals, use some artistic talent (no sweat, it’s for all skill-levels), and learn how to manage your back (or front!) yards food production. Some topics include Heritage seed selection, successive planting, chemical free weed control, beneficial plant combinations, garden plan outline and more!

Margot’s mantra: Low effort, high output!

Margot runs a small, ecologically minded agribusiness growing vegetables for 25 families. She has a keen, well-honed interest in nature, which lead to obtaining a Permaculture Design Certificate.You will take home written course material and your plans.

Kids Summer Camp The Wetaskiwin Allied Art And Craft Centre is once again hoping to host a summer camp for children. Because this camp is largely dependent upon outside funding, we cannot confirm dates at this time. Please check our website in May, and watch for announcements to be sent home with your child from school in June. Last years camp was an outstanding success, and we would are looking forward to serving the community by offering arts and crafts to the children once again. If you would like to be involved in the planning and hosting of this event, please contact us at one of the registration numbers.

The Wetaskiwin Volunteer Quilt Group that meets weekly at the Wetaskiwin Allied Art & Craft Centre has quilts for donation to needy groups and individuals. If you know someone who could benefit from this gift, please call one of the registration contact numbers from the Craft Centre.

Wetaskiwin Word Weavers Writing Group We are a group of aspiring writers of all ages, all interests, and all levels of ability. We gather to share our work, receive feedback on what we are doing well, hear gentle critique on what we can improve and provide feedback to others. All genres of writing are welcome.

We also network to help raise awareness of availability of publishing opportunities, writing contests and writing workshops.

The Wetaskiwin Quilters Group We are a non-profit group meeting Monday evenings bi-monthly at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home. We have fun sharing ideas and techniques, but do not offer classes.

Members can work on their own projects as well as participate in the making of comfort quilts to be donated throughout the community. Biennial Quilt Shows showcase local talent, while providing funding for donations. Whether having basic or advanced skills; new members are always welcome.

Annual membership is $25.00.

Voices of the Town’: Vaudeville in Canada – Traveling Exhibit Opening

Women of Aspenland Nomination Deadline

In an era before television and radio, Vaudeville was the most popular form of entertainment. Voices of the Town recreates the ambience of an evening at the theatre, complete with a reproduction ticket booth and kinetoscope (early film viewing machine).

Photographs and the authentic costume of “Oklahoma Jack“ (a sharp-shooting Vaudevillian who performed with Buffalo Bill Cody, are sure to make this exhibition a memorable and entertaining experience for everyone.

Each October, Canada celebrates Women’s History Month, because it is the month in which Canadian women officially became persons. The Wetaskiwin & District Heritage Museum honours the Women of Aspenland and pays tribute to the many women who made their own unique contributions to the community of Wetaskiwin and area.

Nominations are required from the public in order for the program to remain successful.

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor Prerequisite: 15 years old This certification course is a prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course.

You will focus on the theoretical knowledge that supports learning and teaching including: teaching methods, learning styles, physical principle, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. However, you can choose to do your hours at a different facility.

More co-teaching hours may be assigned if required.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Pre-requisite: Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor This certification course allows the successful candidate teach Red Cross Swimming Lessons.

Red Cross Teen and Adult Stroke Improvement

Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens. The program is designed to further develop strokes chosen by the swimmer in consultation with the Water Safety Instructor and increase swimming distances and proficiency.

Red Cross Swim Journal will be used as a tool to track progressions, healthy lifestyle choices, achievements and skills attained.

Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard and Aquatic Emergency Care NLS Only Prerequisites: 16 years old, Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care NLS and AEC Prerequisites: 16 years old & Bronze Cross Lifesaving Society Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR as well as skills specific to emergencies in an aquatic setting. This standard first aid course is recommended for lifeguards, aquatic instructors, lifesavers, and other individuals who may need to respond to a first aid emergency in an aquatic setting. Includes CPR C certification.

The Lifesaving Society NL certification prepares lifeguards to fulfill this role as

professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics. This program develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles, and decisionmaking process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies. NL training also develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard.

This is a combined course of NL and AEC. However if you already have your AEC or Standard First Aid Certificate certification, then you can take your NLS certification at this time.

Community Support Anger Management

Wetaskiwin CLC, Wetaskiwin Chamber of Commerce Board Room Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems – problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. And it can make you feel as though you’re at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. This 8-week course is meant to help you understand and control anger in order to make better life choices and create positive lasting changes.

The course is taught by a mediator/conflict manager and a psychologist. A certificate of completion is available.

(PCAP) Camrose Association for Community Living, 5317-50 Ave. We serve women who abuse alcohol/drugs during pregnancy; and are pregnant or up to 6 months post-partum; and are ineffectively connected to community services. We also serve women who have a child diagnosed with FASD and are currently abusing alcohol/drugs and are in their childbearing years. Advocates assist clients in setting goals, obtaining alcohol/ drug treatment, staying in recovery, choosing a family planning method, transportation to appointments, connecting with community services, resolve service barriers and more!

FASD Outreach Program This home visitor program provides information, education, support, resources, mentoring services, coaching and advocacy to young adults ( up to 18 years of age) parents and caregivers with children who have (or are suspected to have) Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. There are no fees associated with enrolling or participating in the program.

Healthy Families Home Visitation Program This home visitor program is an early intervention program to support families in providing nurturing, stimulating and safe environments from birth to 5 years. Based on a review of their situation, families with new babies are offered the home visiting service by professional staff in a way that meets their specific needs. Connecting families to community supports is an integral part of the service.

Spring Clean-up – May 12 - 20 Show your pride in our community by participating in Spring Clean-up! Gather your family, some friends or make it a work-place activity, and take some time during Spring Clean-up Week to go out and help make Wetaskiwin look great by picking up garbage.

There will be free garbage bags available to pick up at City Hall as of May 1. Free dumping at the landfill – closed on Sundays but will be open on holiday Monday, May 20!! Plans are underway, details will be available on the Spring Clean-up page at www.wetaskiwin.ca.

Seniors Wellness Conference 2013 The Seniors Wellness Conference will be held on Tuesday, June 4 at the Falun Community Hall. As part of our regions Seniors Week celebrations, this Conference offers seniors a day full of informative sessions, table displays, entertainment and great food. Wetaskiwin Public Library , Monthly Meetings The Wetaskiwin Horticultural Society held its first meeting in July of 1973 and has been an affiliate member of the Alberta Horticultural Association since 1977. The Society meets once a month from September through June. Programs always attempt to inform and engage members and guests in the pleasures and benefits of gardens and gardening.
