Creative Art, Mixed Media After School - Ages 7 - 18 An extremely interesting course offering the history of mask making throughout the world’s different cultures; taught by this popular instructor. With the mask theory knowledge, students will create their own using various materials. Returning students welcome. Kit includes mask-making materials.

Easter Break Kid’s Pottery Children will hand build their clay projects in the first class and glaze these creations during the second class. All projects will be kiln fired. All skill levels. Instructor: Judy Bortnik

How to be a Song Writer NEW!

Patio Lantern in Stained Glass NEW!

Ever wonder what goes into writing a Number One song? Students will learn the song writing process, explore melody and harmony as well as writing and refining lyrical content. Also, students will be looking at where and how the song will be performed and who will be performing it, with an eye towards optimizing the song for its intended format and audience.

Choose from a number of patterns to make a lantern to enjoy while sipping a brew on your patio this summer. Open to beginner thru advanced students. Includes time for student clean-up. Instructor: Sandra French

Body Art The Art of Henna

Mother’s Day Idea (The Perfect gift idea for Daughters to do with their Moms) Teaches the general application of henna paste for those interested in learning how to apply henna freehand. The course teaches the key elements of henna and methodical understanding of developing complex henna designs. Basic preparation and design will teach you the essentials to make and apply henna in traditional and modern Indian Style.

Studio Time provides an informal supervised time, and space to work on your craft. Bring your own tools, or use ours. Pay accordingly. No formal instruction is provided, although mini instructor run workshops may be arranged.

Attendees can inspire and assist each other with ideas and techniques. Students must have had adequate stained glass instruction and experience to sign up - suggest Beginner and Advanced Courses. The WAACC has a selection of glass available for purchase.

Crochet For Beginner’s Mother’s Day Idea

Brazilian Embroidery

Basic crochet techniques will be taught.

Students will make a pair of Mary Jane Slippers and learn to make crochet squares that can be put together into an afghan or other projects, making it the perfect project to do with Mom! Bring a Bagged Lunch. Instructor: Sarah Kumar

The ancient craft of three dimensional embroidery, for beginners or the more experienced. A variety of stitches to create amazing, beautiful designs will be taught. Students should bring a 5” embroidery hoop and scissors.

Date: Tuesdays, April 15 - May 20 Time: 1 - 3 pm Fee: $35. Purchase necessary supplies from instructor (about $50 for beginners) .

Quilt As You Go! One Day Workshop Mother’s Day Idea Spend a day with your mom, or bring a friend.

Learn how to make a reversible table runner, or a baby quilt, by quilting as you go. Once you have completed the last block, the quilt is done! Starting on a larger project is optional.

Students must bring a competent sewing machine, thread, fabric of their choice, cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter. Fabric supply list to be provided at a later date. Bring a bagged lunch. Instructor: Gloria Bolivar Date: Saturday, May 10 Time: 9 am - 4 pm Fee: $60

Quilting Studio Time For the beginner to intermediate quilter. Bring a new or existing project that you would like to work on. Provides an opportunity for support and new skill development. Students must bring a sewing machine in good working order, thread, fabric of their choice, cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter. Instructor: Gloria Bolivar

Mittens-The First Steps Knit a small mitten in class and learn the basics of knitting mitts, including how to make a gusset, with tips and tricks for a better fit.

Different styles of mittens and thumbs will also be discussed, as well as mitten tradition of different countries. If you are a beginner or need help with a pattern you cannot read, time to teach and discuss will be provided. Bring a bagged lunch. Instructor: Barb Brown Date: Saturday, May 3 Time: 10 am - 3 pm Fee: $40. Supply fee: $20 which includes yarn and needles.

Socks-The First Steps Knit a small sock in class and learn the basics of knitting socks, including heel construction and toe formation. Different styles of heels will also be discussed with tips and tricks for a better fitting sock. The sock styles and traditions of various countries will be illustrated and samples of different styles will be displayed. Class open to beginners or if you need help reading a pattern. Bring a bagged lunch.

Photography Macro Photography

(waiting list only) Macro and closeup techniques and equipment requirements. Meet at the WAACC for morning classroom session on techniques. Photography Club Some members of the community have expressed an interest in forming a photography club in Wetaskiwin. This club would meet throughout the year, support and learn from each other. There may be things like courses, events, and outings. As well there may be a yearly photography show and/or competition.

If you have an interest in being involved in the formation of such a club, please leave your name with the WAACC.

Paverpol is a water based medium with textile hardeners. Materials that are hardened or sealed with Paverpol can be placed in the garden or patio throughout the year no matter how cold or wet it is outside! Ongoing Programs Women of Aspenland: discover the lives of women who played a role in building your community As an ongoing exhibit the Heritage Museum pays tribute to the many women who made their own unique contribution to the community of Wetaskiwin. Whether working in the home or in public life, they are all heroines.

The exhibit now includes almost 80 ladies with four new inductees being showcased each year.

We are always looking for recommendations, so stop by, let our heroines inspire you, and maybe even nominate someone you know.

Date: Exhibit ongoing. Nomination deadline for 2014 Inductees is May 16.

Exhibit Spotlight. The Cree Nations of Maskwacis: sharing their history The New Year ushered in an important historical event with the official name change to “Maskwacis” in place of “Hobbema”. As long as Maskwacis Elders can remember, this area has been called Maskwacis (meaning Bear Hill).

It now joins other neighbouring communities including Wetaskiwin (meaning Hills of Peace)

with a name that honours First Nations tradition. Visit the Heritage Museum to learn more about the Cree Nations of Maskwacis in this permanent display.

Classic Movie Matinee Join us on the first Friday of every month for a classic movie matinee experience. Movie, popcorn, refreshments, and fun are all included!

Women of Aspenland Call for Nominations

Pioneer Children Birthdays Want a new birthday party idea? Taking place in our Children’s Pioneer Play Rooms, the Heritage Museum offers a unique 2 hour program where your children can dress up in pioneer costumes and experience what life was like for the pioneer child including making real butter and shopping for candy at the General Store.

Ideal for 5 to 10 years olds, the program will be tailored depending on the age and gender of the children.

Special Events & Programs Pioneer of the Year Call for Nominations Every year the Heritage Museum presents our “Pioneer of the Year” Award to a Wetaskiwin & District resident who continues to make a significant contribution to your community through volunteerism and community spirit.

This tribute is only possible with your help. The theme for 2014 is “Entrepreneur”, come in to the museum today and pick up a nomination form!

In October the Heritage Museum joins a nationwide celebration of Women’s History Month with the annual induction of local women into our Women of Aspenland exhibit.

You have the opportunity to support this celebration by nominating a woman who has made a unique contribution to the Wetaskiwin & District community. Come in to the museum today and pick up a nomination form for our 18th annual induction in October!

16th Annual “Pioneer of the Year” Award Ceremony Each June the Heritage Museum honours a local community leader with our “Pioneer of the Year” Award. Recent honourees have included Community Builders Helmer Larson (2013) and Joyce Bussard (2009), Entertainer Alvin Klause (2012), Railroading Pioneer Cec Colwell (2011), and Youth Leader Harvey Jespersen (2010). Join us on June 13th as we unveil our 2014 Pioneer of the Year: “Entrepreneur” exhibit and present the trophy to our newest honoured recipient.

Canada Day Café Join us on July 1st for a fun array of heritagethemed games, activities, and trivia for children and adults. Learn more about the birth of Canadian Independence with a display that twins local history with the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Quebec conferences.

Prenatal Yoga with Angela Refresh Wellness Centre Prenatal Yoga classes provide an opportunity for expectant women to develop greater vitality and awareness of their body that is home for two, as well as to deepen their relationship with their baby. Gentle postures, breath work, vocal toning and meditation are learned to cultivate flexibility, calm and confidence in preparation for labour and childbirth. Calm and flexibility ease the birthing process, thus reducing pain and increasing the joy of giving birth.

Pilates (mat class) with Lindsey

Refresh Wellness Centre Increase your strength, flexibility and body awareness as you flow through a series of dynamic movement that restore balance to the core muscles. In addition to strengthening and stretching muscles, the class will help to improve posture and alignment, increase body control and breathing connection while creating a longer, leaner look. This hour long class will also incorporate additional strength and flexibility exercises to ensure a full body workout.

Home Alone Safely Ages 8 and Up Mezzanine, Civic Centre Learn the skills needed to stay home alone.

Lessons on fire safety, internet safety, basic first aid, kitchen safety and lots more! The day will wind up with a swim, so remember to bring your swimsuit. Snacks will be provided but participants are required to bring their own lunch.

Riding Rookies

Ages 3 - 5 Drill Hall, Civic Centre Riding Rookies is a one hour camp for three to five year olds full of pedaling fun and safety.

This camp is best suited for children who want to learn to ride but are not old enough for the Pedal Heads level. These riders come with their trikes, run bikes or bikes with training wheels and learn how to start, stop, steer and pedal as well as helmet and traffic safety. We will not be taking off training wheels. CSA approved helmets are mandatory.

Pedal Heads

Ages 6 and Up Drill Hall, Civic Centre Pedal Heads are those who have moved beyond training wheels and can balance and pedal for short distances. Our goal is to get these bikers consistently riding on their own, becoming less wobbly and stopping without using their feet. CSA approved helmets are mandatory.

This course offers youth the training to promote themselves as a babysitter to prospective parents. Graduates will receive a wallet card that confirms they have completed the course.

Begin your training to become a lifeguard Bronze Medallion Prerequisites: Bronze Star or 13 years old Bronze Medallion Award teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries, and defense and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Bronze Cross Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR as well as skills specific to emergencies in an aquatic setting. This standard first aid course is recommended for lifeguards, aquatic instructors, lifesavers, and other individuals who may need to respond to a first aid emergency in an aquatic setting.

Includes CPR C certification. **AEC or Standard First Aid is a Pre-Requisite for the National Lifeguard Course.

National Lifeguard (NL) Prerequisites: Bronze Cross and AEC or Standard First Aid The NL certification prepares lifeguards to fulfill this role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics. This program develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles, and decision-making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies. NL training also develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard.

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) Prerequisites: 15 years old This certification course is a prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course.

You will focus on the theoretical knowledge that supports learning and teaching including: teaching methods, learning styles, physical principle, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. An additional 8 hours of co-teaching are required to complete this course; however, extra co-teaching hours may be required. Hours will be assigned for each candidate.

Fitness Courses Aquafitness Aquafit is a great way to add variety to your fitness routine. Improved muscle tone and cardiovascular fitness are just two of the many benefits you will gain from putting on your swimsuit and jumping into the water. A fun and energetic aerobic exercise class, Aquafit uses the water for resistance. Low to zero impact is easy on bones and joints. Enjoy a 1-hour class set to music. Work at your own pace, no swimming skills required.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Deep Water Running

Prerequisites: AWSI This certification course allows the successful candidate to teach Red Cross Swimming Lessons. WSI focuses on planning and teaching the Red Cross Swim continuum, instructional emergency response skills and instructional techniques specific to our programs.

Candidates will learn how to plan lessons, evaluate skills and be prepared to interact with different age groups ranging from infants to adults. This course requires an additional 12 hours of co-teaching; however, extra coteaching hours may be needed. Hours will be assigned for each candidate.

Aboussafy Aquatic Centre / Mezzanine Date: August 11 - 14 Time: 10 am - 6 pm

Deep water running is jogging in water deep enough that your feet don’t touch the bottom. Deep water running is commonly recommended for rehabilitation. It is also used for fitness and is an accelerated training method used by athletes. The natural buoyancy of the water reduces the strain on your joints, bones and muscles by as much as 90 percent. Deep water running takes advantage of buoyancy while providing the same cardiovascular workout as if you were running on solid ground. Participants may choose to use a buoyancy belt; the aquabelt suspends you so that your whole body gets a total workout.

Need some exercise, but have no one to watch the kids? Come join the Aboussafy Aquatic Centre’s AquaTots class. A qualified staff member will be in the training pool to supervise games and fun, while you are able to enjoy the one hour Aquafit class in the main pool.

Karataquatics Karataquatics is a fast paced workout based on techniques used in martial arts training. Done in the shallow end, this class alternates between cardio and resistance training. Karataquatics is a hybrid of karate, strength and endurance training; kick, jab, and run your way to your fitness goal. This class is perfect for those who like to work out without music.

Swim Lessons Adult & Teen Lessons Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens. Children’s Lessons Red Cross Swim Kids

A healthy life through swimming 10-level program for children 6 years of age and up Help your child develop a healthy lifestyle through swimming. Your child will learn to swim and stay safe in a fun environment that promotes a personal best and celebrates individual success. The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes, build their distance and speed, while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all criteria have been successfully completed.

Red Cross Swim Preschool

The love of swimming starts here 8-level program for children 4 months to 5 years of age Give your child the gift of aquatic fun and swimming at an early age. Songs, games and introductory swimming skills will make your child comfortable and happy in the water. Each level is built around an aquatic animal mascot, which makes lessons engaging and fun. The Instructor uses progressive teaching techniques adapted to each child and provides constant feedback and encouragement. Parents will participate in the classes with their child until the age of 4. Children enter a level based on their age and abilities.

A Flex Card is a modern version of our 10-punch pass, and has no expiry date. A 10% discount applies, so you only pay for nine visits and receive your tenth free!

What does my membership include?

Wetaskiwin Horticultural Society The Wetaskiwin Horticultural Society held its first meeting in July of 1973 and has been an affiliate member of the Alberta Horticultural Association since 1977. The Society meets once a month from September through June.

The interactive after-school program, with the Rogers Technology Centre, allows youth to explore their interests, receive homework support, connect with mentors, interact with peers, increase digital literacy, and plan post-secondary education. Hope Mission Kids in Action

Hope Mission Kids in Action is a free after-school program offered at both Centennial and Parkdale elementary schools (1 day/week). Complete with games, Bible Stories, food and more, we offer two 9-week sessions (fall & winter) for grades 1-6 and one 6-week program in the spring for grades 4-6.

Primary Prenatal Clinic A team of skilled and experienced physicians as well as three prenatal nurses are committed to caring for maternity patients. Care includes assessment and ordering of bloodwork and ultrasounds. Patients also have access to other

members of PCN’s multidisciplinary team: Dietitian, Therapist & Patient Care Facilitator. All patients are referred at 24 weeks gestation to the delivering Physician of their choice.

Tele-Ophthalmology Clinic If you have diabetes, digital retinal photographs of your eyes can be taken at the Wetaskiwin PCN office and then sent to Edmonton for review by an Ophthalmologist. Your Family Physician will receive this report within a few days. Prior to your appointment, your PCN nurse will review the procedure with you.

Annual screening is recommended.

Camrose Women’s Shelter Camrose Women’s Shelter Society We operate a 22 bed residence, located in Camrose, which provides a safe place for women and children from surrounding communities who are experiencing family violence, are in a crisis situation or are homeless.

In addition to providing for basic needs (food, clothing, shelter), we offer counseling, referral, information on domestic violence, safety planning, childcare, life skills support and have an onsite school for grades 1-9. Our Outreach Program supports families who live in the community and are experiencing domestic violence and also assists women as they transition from the shelter to independent living. Our 24/7 crisis line (1-877-672-1010) offers phone support regarding family violence, related supports and services. Presentations are available upon request.

Anger Management Encounters with Anger Wetaskiwin CLC, Wetaskiwin Chamber of Commerce Board Room Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems—problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. And it can make you feel as though you’re at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. This 8-week course is meant to help you understand and control anger in order to make better life choices and create positive lasting changes. The course is taught by a mediator/conflict manager and a psychologist. A certificate of completion is available.

FCSS Community Grant Program The FCSS Grant Program provides funds to enhance and enrich preventative programs and services offered by non-profit organizations and agencies, within the City of Wetaskiwin.

Surf and Sport Camp Full Day

Manluk Centre, 2nd Floor Multi-Purpose Room Ages 8 and Up Get exclusive access to the brand-new Board Rider at the Manluk Centre every morning!

You’ll also have the chance to enjoy the other pools and slides and learn some cool new water sports. Your afternoon will be spent on dry land enjoying other activities and having fun! Alder Flats, Buck Lake, Winfield, Pigeon Lake Bus-To-Swim Day Camp In partnership with the City of Wetaskiwin Ages: 6 to 17 The Bus-To-Swim & Day Camp Program provides an opportunity for rural youth to take swimming lessons in the Manluk Centre: Wetaskiwin’s Regional Aquatics & Fitness facility. The Manluk Centre is set to open early this summer, and will include a 25-metre six-lane competition pool, two waterslides, a leisure pool, a lazy river, a whirlpool, a second-floor fitness facility, and the only Board Rider surf system in Western Canada!

In this 2 week program children and youth get to spend the entire day learning to swim, participating in group activities, learning crafts and loads of other fun activities.

Parents drop their child off and pick them up at the designated locations. Check out the 2 week Bus-To-Swim itinerary on the County website.
