Our Charity Chamber Pot has proved to be a success and has raised valuable funds for our first three chosen charities. We intend to continue with this to ensure that many of our charities benefit from your generosity. Our cocktail evening at the Chichester Harbour Hotel proved very popular, as did our 'Speed Networking With Our Neighbours' event at the Hilton Avisford Park Hotel with Worthing & Adur, Brighton & Hove, Bognor Regis and Sussex Chambers, with 85 attendees. It was an extremely hot day, but we were looked after admirably by the team at the Hilton Avisford Park Hotel. ‘Drop in for Drinks Wednesday’ is gathering momentum, so we are going to continue with these in 2019, as they’re an informal way for people to get to know each other and build mutually beneficial relationships. Moving forward to what’s happening between January and June 2019, we continue to offer you plenty of events such as a charity training workshop on 19th February at Dementia Support, a Private Luncheon and networking event on 5th April with our local MP, Gillian Keegan, kindly sponsored by Rathbones and Paddle Boarding with Hampshire Chamber on 27th June. Finally, we are always grateful to the generosity of our members with raffle donations for our members’ meetings and we would welcome your continued generosity for prizes. This is a great way of publicising your business too, as we give you a mention in our magazine and on our website as a way of saying thank you. We also welcome your good news stories and testimonials on how the Chichester Chamber has supported and helped you in any way. We continue to gather momentum as a Chamber and with your support, we will continue to grow.

I have been on the board of Chichester Chamber of Commerce & Industry for about four years now. To be honest, I had never considered being a volunteer Director for an organisation before being asked, so really had no idea what was involved. Reflecting upon the last four years, I’m very glad I did. Here’s why. I am probably the longest serving current Director of the Chamber, and have seen a fair few fellow Directors and Chair people come and go. It is remarkable how different personalities have such a dramatic impact on an organisation’s culture and operation. If you run your own business, being on the board of another organisation gives you a different view on how things are done. I have definitely learned lessons from my time with the Chamber and applied them to my own business’ direction. We have an incredibly diverse membership so it would be impossible for the Chamber to represent all local business interest with a ‘single voice’ but, by helping out with an organisation like the Chamber, I feel that I am in some small way contributing to the overall business health and life in the District. I’ve represented the Chamber concerning the A27 improvements in various ways. I’ve been the ‘local business voice’ on the Parking Forum, and at various other events during my time. These types of opportunities to represent the membership have only been possible through being a volunteer Director. Finally, from being fairly new to the District four years ago, I have met a really broad range of fantastic people, from local and regional businesses, through to local MPs and senior council leaders. Interestingly, very few have led on to new business for my own business, but that was never my intention. In summary, I believe that serving on any board as a volunteer is tremendously rewarding. As well as meeting a lot of interesting people, I’ve learned a lot about how to work with different people, what makes a board meeting work best and have also been able to apply some ideas from how the Chamber operates to my own business. I highly recommend it! If you would be interested in finding out more about being on the CCCI Board please contact office@chichestercci.org.uk

Mail Boxes Etc.
Supporting careers in schools The recent launch of Coast to Capital’s Strategic Economic Plan, Gatwick 360, includes ‘creating skills for the future’ as one of its eight economic priorities. This reinforces the ongoing work being carried out by the Enterprise Adviser Network in the Chichester and Arun area. We currently work with ten secondary schools, Chichester College and an Alternative Provision Centre. The work we do continues to support education and skills delivery to match the changing requirements of industry in the area.
Mail Boxes Etc. Chichester, is your local post, parcel and print centre. Our team consists of Kal, Judy, James and Lindsay. Our joint skills include shipping, packing, office management, print and design; we have experience in business management, finance, tourism and customer service. A business mailbox is a great solution for small or home offices, enabling people to keep their business address separate from their home address. Limited companies can be registered at our address too. A personal mailbox is ideal for people who are travelling or live in shared accommodation and need a separate private address for their mail. We take care of the mail, keeping it secure and we can even sign for courier delivered packages on our customers' behalf, which gives them more freedom – no more waiting in for deliveries. We have a One Drop Mailbox solution which is just for parcels, ensuring our customers’ on-line orders are available for collection from our store at their convenience. We offer a wide choice of postal and courier services all under the one roof, which, combined with our expert knowledge of the shipping world, makes Mail Boxes Etc the first choice for many. We ship a lot of fine art and antiques, as we can also offer our in-house compensation scheme which covers all the fragile items that couriers don’t. With our specialist packing team and our competitive prices, shipping within the UK and abroad was never easier. We also work with local B&B’s and hotels, helping their guests to ship urgent business documents, return left baggage, and of course impulse buys which don’t fit in the case! Our print services include photocopying, laminating, document production, dissertation printing, business cards, leaflets, wide format print for architectural drawings and posters, and ordnance survey mapping. www.mbe.co.uk/chichester
Representatives from a variety of business sectors in the Arun and Chichester area are partnering schools across the area, working closely with their Head Teachers and Careers Leads to develop and support the embedding of careers programmes. Enterprise Adviser volunteers are the backbone of our service, helping to ensure careers advice fully exposes young people to specific opportunities within the local economy, in line with the Government’s careers strategy. These ongoing partnerships are helping to bridge the gap between employers and education by motivating, inspiring and supporting young people in making informed choices about their future. Activities such as talks, careers fairs, CV workshops, mock interviews, apprenticeship opportunity promotion, projects, work experience and workplace visits are supporting students across the area. We also hold termly Arun and Chichester Careers Networking meetings to share best practice between employers, schools and stakeholders. We are currently seeking new business representatives to partner with schools within the area, including Chichester, Littlehampton and Barnham. If you’d like to get involved or simply find out more, please contact Kelly Parkhouse on 07827 332132 or email kelly.parkhouse@coast2capital.org,uk

BID
Towards a multi-purpose town centre We’ve all been alarmed at the changes to our High Street but consumers, even though overloaded with technology, are still visiting shops. 54% visit their High Street once a week and one in ten pop into their local town every day. But they are increasingly able to choose to go to a location for many other reasons than the list of retail names present and the size of the stores they trade from. Retail alone is no longer the lynchpin to a shopping destination’s success and all modern town and city centres must now go ‘beyond retail’ to fulfil a wider variety of functions attracting a full range of consumer groups; be they residents, workers, students or visitors. These consumers' retail needs are essentially falling into two halves; value for my basics and essentials, and quality for those desirable and discretionary items I might be tempted to buy. Successful town centres are multi-purpose and multi-use to drive ‘footfall’. Online will always be part of the mix of retail
activity, as will out-of-town and edge-of-town, but alert retailers actually like and benefit from multi-purpose centres as they can both feed off and share footfall with the others in town. The key to our future is to build on our existing strengths: the retail offer and the multiple reasons for visiting Chi city centre. With 204 independent outlets and 162 multiples we are a big shopping mall without a roof, set against a fabulous historical and cultural backdrop. Footfall is dropping all the time but parking data shows that people are staying longer in Chichester. So the consumer is beginning to cotton on.

‘Branded gentry’ under threat Big global brands will need to adapt to survive in a rapidly changing consumer landscape Like the landed gentry of the 19th century, who could live comfortably on the income from their land, today’s ‘dividend aristocrats’ have long enjoyed growing streams of income from their brands. And just as agricultural disruption led to an existential crisis for the landed gentry, so today’s ‘branded gentry’ are having to adapt to rapid changes in the consumer landscape being forged by the next generation. At the side of your kitchen sink, where Fairy Liquid once had pride of place, you’re just as likely to find Tesco’s own brand, which today’s consumers probably reckon gets the job done just as well for less. Companies selling branded goods are under threat in the brave new world of a mobile internet, where product quality is conveyed through user reviews rather than brand names. Can they continue to thrive? We think they can, but they’ll need to make a big effort to be agile and innovative. These branded gentry – the big, global brands – have tended to be successful investments over the long term, enjoying fairly stable and predictable returns. The strength and durability of their brands was seen as giving them a high degree of pricing power and control over their own destiny. Their predictable earnings and growing dividends earned many a coveted status as so-called dividend aristocrats, and a firm place at the core of many diversified portfolios around the world. So what happens to them is particularly important for investors.
As the millennial generation grows in importance, their emphasis on values, cost-consciousness and experience over possessions is influencing wider consumer behaviours. And not only are consumer tastes shifting in significant ways, but smaller niche companies have been good at spotting these changes before less nimble established brands.
A new brand of vigilance While there are a number of challenges for established brands to acknowledge and overcome, we think talk of the ‘death of brands’ is greatly exaggerated. Some will undoubtedly fall by the wayside, as they always do, but others are already successfully adapting and more will follow suit. For investors the key will be to identify the brands that can adapt to this ‘brand new world’ and to avoid the ones that can’t or won’t. We continue to keep a close eye on this changing consumer landscape to spot these threats and opportunities.
