Welcome A warm welcome to all our readers of this, the second edition of Chichester Business; a new bi-annual magazine highlighting business news and Chamber events in Chichester and the District. A further warm and exciting welcome to the Chichester Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s new Chair, Julie Kapsalis – Vice-Principal (Commercial) of Chichester College; and new Vice-Chair, Shelagh Legrave OBE DL – Principal and Chief Executive of Chichester College. As leaders of a multimillion pound business at the forefront of Education and Training in the South East, their appointments arguably mark a new era for CCCI and further strengthen a board of directors, who continue to champion your local business opportunities and needs. Please go to page 9 to see all the updates on the CCCI board. And, what a time to be at the centre of Chichester business! As the key voice for businesses in Chichester and the District, CCCI is championing numerous issues which will impact you and potentially your customers. We have just released Chichester CCI – Have Your Say and we implore all members to spare 5 minutes to tell us their thoughts on topics from local transport to the A27, to housing development, to access to apprentices – http://www.chichestercci.org.uk/chambernews/have-your-say-the-ccci-survey. Results from this survey will drive how CCCI represents our membership on the local stage in the coming months. CCCI, has also recently announced its intention to act as the voice for local businesses on the A27 consultation process. As many of you are aware, CCCI was one of the first collaborative bodies to be consulted by Mott MacDonald in September 2015, when they spoke to the Chamber membership about the options for the A27. Since then changes have been aplenty, read what Andrew Tyrie MP had to say on this and more on page 15. It is CCCI’s role to act as the business communicator during the consultation process which is fast approaching. So, the Chamber is busier than ever with many new members and continued engagement from companies involved in the Chamber for many years. This is reflected in our events programme, which for the next 6 months has even more opportunities for you to network, grow your business, increase your business profile and receive business support. I hope you enjoy reading this edition and look forward to seeing you at CCCI events in the months ahead.

The voice of Chichester business The Swiss Army Knife of chichestercci.org.uk Unified Communications There have been amazing advancements in the last few years in the IT & Technology industry. However, that doesn’t mean that SMB’s have more time within the working day (8-10 hours definitely isn’t enough!) That’s where having Unified Communications is an advantage. Unified Communications are pretty self-explanatory, however at LMS Group, we never want to leave you uncertain about any technical jibber-jabber.

Unified Communications help optimize business processes & increase user productivity, by using integrated communication systems – kind of like the Swiss Army Knife of business communications!

Why should your business have a more complete approach to business comms? Firstly, it helps SME’s take advantage of features that make them appear larger & more competitive. Secondly, by future proofing your business you won’t be One of the biggest aspects of Unified Comm’s is VoIP. VoIP is now the main contender in the digital communications ring. It has many benefits including: reduced costs, flexibility, disaster recovery, scalability & mobility. As traditional ISDN lines will end in 2025, any business which doesn’t move away from this legacy network will become severely limited. In addition to VoIP, another key aspect to Unified Communications is high productivity. In order to do keep things moving forwards, you to feel at home within Microsoft, it also boasts built-in safeguards & privacy features, in addition to collaboration of your workforce through the Cloud. (Which as the name suggests, is 365 days a year…although we do wonder what happens when a leap year comes around?) Although we’ve only covered a couple of great things here, there are many more to aid your business & unify your communications. For example, others areas for consideration include Disaster Recovery, Remote Working & Mobile Device Management. All of which are covered in our Guru Guides! BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (BID) UPDATE

Support us and you support your city By Andrew Finnamore, BID Chairman ‘Objectivity and articulation’ has been my mantra ever since I took on the role of Chairman in 2010. Chichester BID was never set up to peddle anyone’s agenda, but to give ‘business’ a voice, in the creation of a vibrant market place. If you drag your mind back to those heady days of midrecession, you might, just might, remember how bad things were, whether you owned your business or you worked for others. Banks had tightened their lending policies, Local Authorities planned to cut where it couldn’t afford to be, and confidence was on the floor. Who would be mad enough to ask business to ‘think outside the box’? We were. Being prepared to try and maybe accept failure as a consequence, is the spirit upon which this nation once thrived, and which we are in danger of losing. If we always believe the status quo is our template for the future, there is no future. This is not an argument for rash and ill-considered behaviour, but a measured assessment of what has gone by and use it to

frame the future you wish to achieve – accept that a changing world is to be embraced, not hidden from. Tease out the bits you see worked and use them as your foundation.

Embedded consultation As we embark on our final year in the first term, we start the process of embedded consultation to see how the businesses want us to respond to changing market conditions, and once more address those matters that our local authority partners can’t or won’t address. The answer is always constructive partnership – for us going forwards, it’s the Chamber, BID and Visit Chichester working much closer together. Three strong, private sector business voices. ‘Support us and you support your city.’ www.chichesterbid.co.uk

Business Curry Club with Chichester BID Join us to network and socialise over a delicious curry. Tues 6 September Tues 1 November from 5.45pm at Masala Gate, 8 St Pancras. Book now: www.chichestercci.org.uk/events

The voice of Chichester business chichestercci.org.uk MEMBER PROFILE

Mark Spofforth, New High Sheriff of West Sussex Mark has also given a considerable amount of voluntary time and effort in the charity sector, working with Lord Hodgson on a Government review of the Charities Act in March 2012, and currently serves on the group that drafts the accounting rules, the “SORP for Charities”. Mark is currently on the Board of Trustees for the Thalidomide Trust, and is a Governor at Sion School in Worthing.

Influence

Mark Spofforth is a senior partner at the Chichester office of Spofforths Chartered Accountants. He has worked as a general practitioner for nearly 30 years and has looked after many family businesses, trusts and charities. The firm is shortly to merge with Kreston Reeves to become a major regional player in professional services across London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Mark has had a varied career in the profession, working with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, of which he was President in 2012. That experience led to a period on the Takeover Panel, and on Committees within BIS working on better regulation.

As High Sheriff, Mark plans to use whatever influence the role bestows to help the residents and organisations of West Sussex, and particularly Chichester. He looks forward to assisting with Citizenship ceremonies to greet newcomers to the county and also wants to single out the members of the Police and Fire services who go a step beyond what any reasonable member of the public expect. Being High Sheriff enables him to raise the profile of charitable organisations and Mark has chosen two charities – The Chestnut Tree Hospice and Winston’s Wish, both focused on children and the impact that cancer can have on their lives, for which to raise funds. BUSINESS NAVIGATOR SERVICE

6,000 businesses helped so far... Around 6,000 local businesses have been supported by the Business Navigator Growth Hub service since it was launched two years ago. It provides risk management solutions tailored to the aviation industry. Jennie Verrinder was introduced to Claire Atkinson, senior

CCCI EVENT

HAVE YOUR SAY

Lunch with Andrew Tyrie MP By Tracey McEachran, Curious Minds Consulting

to the south of Chichester will further exacerbate congestion. In the interest of attracting more businesses to the area, improvements to the southern road are critical.

Your voice counts!

Housing development

The sun was shining and the room was warm both in a sense of the atmosphere and the temperature, all in all a perfect setting for a Chichester Chamber of Commerce and Industry lunch date at The Chichester Harbour Hotel with MP for Chichester, Andrew Tyrie. No advance warnings or rehearsals as Mr Tyrie worked his way around the room soliciting chamber member’s opinions on the subjects they would like him to cover during his 30-minute talk. I think it would be safe to say there were no surprise topics for the MP!

A27 improvements Top of the list, of course, was the now redundant A27 northern by-pass and continued improvements to the current southern by-pass. In answer to the question ‘Why was the northern bypass option scrapped before it came to full consultation?’ Mr Tyrie talked about limited funds and that the proposed northern bypass would have sucked all of Highways England’s limited financial resources for highways improvements, much needed for the southern route. Given that two thirds of traffic at peak times is local, the northern bypass would not alleviate much of the current congestion on the southern bypass. The decision to scrap the northern bypass was taken in order to ensure future improvements to the southern bypass. Mr Tyrie felt that it was critical to ensure improvements to the current infrastructure, particularly as continued housing development

Moving on from the A27, but staying with housing development, Mr Tyrie shared his views on development within the South Downs National Park, which covers three quarters of his constituency. Current planning permission allows for approximately 75 homes per annum within the CDC part of the National Park. He questioned whether there was scope to raise the number given the amount of derelict farm buildings that could be set aside for development. ‘Banks’ continued to form an important line of question from bonuses to how the government could ensure there was better support for small businesses. Mr Tyrie’s response was banks need more competition, however he also talked about the difficulty of bringing new banks to the market and the need for change to legislation to make this possible.

Immigration There were many other topics covered over Mr Tyrie’s relaxed and informal talk amongst which was immigration, expressing his view that immigration had a positive impact on the area and the important question should not be how many, but whom. Other topics briefly touched upon were pensions and savings alongside Boris Johnson and the Chichester Festival Theatre. Mr Tyrie threw a few party politics in but on the whole he took the opportunity to address the issues affecting local businesses in the room. For the full blog about the lunch please go to www.chichestercci.org.uk. Event was sponsored by

By Jason Miller Director of CCCI and SteadyGo As the key business voice for Chichester and the District we continue to take part in consultations that we believe will benefit all members and continue to help our city grow economically. In May 2016 we outlined our key objectives for Chichester businesses and the continued debate surrounding the A27, these are: 1. To lobby Highways England and Department of Transport to maintain funding at maximum levels to ensure the best possible long term solution to improve the existing A27. 2. To lobby Highways England and Department of Transport to establish a suitable programme of works through design, enabling works and construction in conjunction with WSCC that minimises disruption to all road users whilst the upgrades are being carried out. 3. To seek assurances from Highways England and the Department of Transport that they acknowledge that the impact on and views of local businesses should be given considerable weight in any decision making process. CCCI have formed an advisory committee and we are encouraging all CCCI members and local business to sign up to the #A27Haveyoursay campaign, so we can form a unified voice to lobby on these key issues. Local business owners unlock their growth potential with fully funded support

H

aving gained valuable experience working for the NHS, business owners Fiona and Paul Moir realised their ambitions of running their own business when they started goPhysio back in 2001. The main challenge they faced was accessing external finance, in order to upscale to a bigger premise within the local vicinity that would facilitate the next phase of their business growth. That’s when they enrolled with GetSet for Growth. Working closely with expert marketing and finance advisors, the Eastleigh-based physiotherapy business made a successful application for a LEP Grant. GetSet was able to support them through this process as they unlocked the necessary finance to help them move their business forward. Fiona and Paul’s uncertainty in accessing finance is far from being an exception to the rule. In fact, The Department of Business Innovation & Skills Small Business Survey found that despite 76% of UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) claiming aspirations for growth, almost half have had difficulties in accessing finance. This is where GetSet for Growth’s fully funded support is invaluable.

“Growing a business is tough.” says Helen Stratton, Team Leader for GetSet for Growth Solent “It requires a balance of confidence, resilience and skills in order to navigate your way through the myriad of issues you come across along the way. GetSet’s unique combination of finance and marketing support means that businesses don’t have to find their way in the dark anymore. By registering for the support, which is fully funded thanks to the Regional Growth Fund, they can call upon the expertise of time served professionals who have, more than likely, been in their shoes before. You can’t put a value on that type of support for a small business owner who is trying to break through the growth ceiling”. GetSet has already supported well over 2,000 businesses and raised more than £6 million for its clients. And in June and July, small business owners in Chichester, and across the Solent area, can benefit from

a series of fully funded masterclasses, covering business and marketing strategies, content marketing and SEO, which are being delivered in partnership with the Chichester Chamber of Commerce & Industry. “We’re delighted to be delivering these masterclasses in partnership with the Chichester Chamber” says Helen, “It’s a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to get access to our fully funded support and see that the growth potential in their businesses is well within their reach.”

If your business would benefit from fully funded support, register with GetSet for Growth at www.getsetforgrowth.com/register or call the Solent team on 0800 917 7044. Delivered by
