ZAMBEZE DELTA SAFARIS COUTADA 11 & COUTADA 14

MOZAMBIQUE Mozambique is situated in South East Africa. Coutada 11 and 14 are official safari concession, covering 2000 square kilometers of some of the most diverse habitat and animal species in Africa. This is one of the few remaining in Africa where one can still do a classical African safari. Coutada 11 is part of the Marromeu Complex and borders the might Zambezi River to the north. Coutada 11 is situated in the central part of coastal Mozambique. The spectrum of wildlife is quite remarkable, having 21 hunting species of game from the tiny Livingstone’s suni to the buffalo, including four of the Big Five.

Buffalo roam the open flood plains and swamps in herds of several hundred. A recent count in the Marromeu complex estimated the buffalo herds to be around 25 000 strong. Sable are found in huge herds, often nearing 150. Coutada 11 has five distinctive types of habitat, namely Miombo woodland, sand forests, tropical savannah, swamps and floodplains which makes this area totally unique. We are the longest standing concessionaire in Mozambique and have held the lease on Coutada 11 since 1992 . Over the years, sound game management practices and anti-poaching programs, have contributed to making this area one of the best free roaming gamelands in Africa today. Coutada 11 and 14 are virtually at carrying capacity for most species. Hunters fly into Beira International Airport, and a short charter flight finds you landing in one of the most pristine hunting concessions in Africa.

MUNGARI CAMP

Mungari is our original camp and is named after the stream that flows close by. It is ideally situated centrally in Coutada 11 which enables every corner of our 500 000 acre hunting block to be accessed easily. Built under the branches of huge Msasa trees, the birdlife and little Red Duiker have all kept Mungari as their home. We have ten East African style tents, all bathroom en-suite with hot and cold running water. The camp has 24-hour electricity and is powered by solar with a backup generator. For easy logistics, Mungari is situated within walking distance of our helipad and runway.

NGAZI CAMP

This historic camp was built by Portuguese hunters in the 1960’s. We have, however , recently rebuilt and renovated. Ngazi boasts 4 rooms all bathroom en-suite with hot and cold running water. The camp has 24hour electrical power from solar with a backup generator. Ngazi is well suited to smaller groups or families wanting the intimacy of their camp. Like Mungari, Ngazi is centrally placed to allow easy access to every corner of Coutada 11.

CAMP BAMBALA

To cater for our smaller groups and families, in 2023 we opened camp Bambala. Two on-suite chalets over looking a pan, and built under the mature Msasa forest. Centrally placed in Coutada 11, it’s a camp with a view. Bambala runs on solar power, with a back up generator.

BUFFALO Zambeze Delta Safaris is Africa’s premier purveyor of Cape Buffalo. The Zambeze Delta holds one of the highest concentrations of Buffalo per square mile in Africa today. From hunting single Dagga boys to the bulls following the huge herds (often numbering well over a thousand), opportunities are there every day! Glassing over a huge herd 40 yards away in a grassy glade of the Delta, is a memory that will stay with you forever. We offer two specific types of buffalo hunts. The Delta has huge herds and plenty of opportunities, it isn’t unusual to hunt three or four herds in a single day. We use Hagglunds BV206 amphibious vehicles to access the swamps. These BV’s allow us to recover the entire buffalo, an important factor of our conservation model is meat distribution to our local community. The flocks of white cattle egrets give away the herds’ locations. Getting into shooting range involves keeping a good eye on the wind and often a little crawling, you will probably get a little more than your feet wet. The savanna portion of Coutada 11 also has Buffalo. These are hunted by picking up the tracks of single bulls or herds and tracking them down. Zambeze Delta Safaris has a full-time wildlife scientist on our team. We believe in using science in the management of our wildlife. One of his duties is aging every Buffalo harvested. Taking into account that on average a Buffalo will breed at four and a half years of age and will form a full hard boss at the age of eight. In the 2019 season, we did not take a single Buffalo younger than eight years. The average was over nine and the oldest being 12.7 years. Taking 75 Buffalo this year; is an achievement that our team is extremely proud of.

LIVINGSTONE'S ELAND As if by magic, every year at the beginning of October the big blue Livingstone Eland bulls join the cow-herds on the flood plain and surrounding palm savanna. The heaviest of the antelope family, these graceful animals often weigh in at over 2000lbs. A mature bull carries a mop on his forehead, and the dark blue body is actually the color of their skin. Blue bulls have very little hair over their shoulders. Being one of the very few wild antelope to have body fat, they also make exceptional table fare. When bulls walk in a relaxed manner their hooves often click. It’s often this sound that gives their whereabouts away. A small, well-managed quota allows us to take exceptional bulls every season.

SABLE Coutada 11 has one of the highest concentrations of Sable in Africa today. Herds often number over 100 and bachelor herds of ten bulls are not uncommon. They are found on virtually every open pan and the fringes of the flood plain. Our annual game survey reveals we have in excess of 2500 sable. A conservative take-off has proved to show good quality bulls with lots of secondary growth. Every season, the quality keeps getting a little better.

ORIBI The flood plains and pans of Coutada 11 provide an ideal habitat for this open grassland species where they thrive. When pursuing this special member of the tiny ten, a huge population will give you ample opportunity to take a special trophy.

LIVINGSTONE'S SUNI Recognized as one of the tiny ten, Livingstone's Suni are very habitat-specific, requiring pristine mature sand forest in order to thrive. Having thousands of hectares of this habitat, Coutada 11 holds the absolute honey pot of Livingstone's Suni hunting in Africa. We hold every record there is to be held. A huge population in an ideal habitat will have you looking at more Suni on every outing, than you ever dreamed possible.

BLUE DUIKER One of the more secretive members of the tiny ten, Blue Duiker inhabit the sand forests along with the Livingstone's Suni, but they tend to prefer the slightly thicker cover. From August onwards, tend to be better for Blue Duiker, as the forests have dropped some leaves, making it easier to pick them out.

RED DUIKER Natal Red Duiker are ideally suited to the Coutada 11 forests. You will frequently find pairs along the forest roads and edges. We hold the current world record as well as most of the top 10 entries. Recently, our Anti-Poaching Unit picked up a pair of horns that exceeds all existing records. This handsome duiker is another worthy member of the tiny 10.

BUSHPIG Bushpig in the Zambeze Delta tend to be reddish in color, far more so than those found further south. They bait readily and are very often found out and about in the early morning and late afternoons.

WARTHOG Warthogs are our second most numerous animal in Coutada 11. It isn’t unusual to see hundreds along the edge of the flood plain every day. We have fantastic genetics and a huge warthog is a common part of most safari bags.

HIPPO The Zambeze Delta is ideal habitat for Hippo, with its open lagoons and papyrus covered river channels. The Hippo are nature’s way of keeping the waterways and lagoons open. With its abundance, our area produces exceptional Hippo.

BUSHBUCK The Zambeze Delta is home to the Chobe subspecies of bushbuck. Success takes patience, by sitting for them on pans and open forest glades. They also like the Palm thickets along the edge of the flood plain where they are frequently seen in the early mornings and evenings.

NYALA The pans and forest glades are home to our Nyala. We have an exceptional population with world-class quality. Preferred hunting methods include sitting for them patiently on pans and open forest glades where just before dark the grey ghosts appear. They are also seen frequently crossing between thickets giving a hunter ample opportunity.

SELOUS ZEBRA In 1994 we knew of only five Selous Zebra on our flood plain. Today they thrive and you will find at least 500 on any day. They are an extraordinary zebra without a shadow stripe and typically a little bigger than the common plains zebra. A wellmanaged herd with a conservative take-off allows the population to show a good increase every year.

COMMON WATERBUCK Take a look at the record books and you will find most of the Waterbuck come from our Zambeze Delta. This is first-class habitat for Common Waterbuck and they thrive here. It isn’t unusual to see bachelor herds of over 100 bulls. There simply isn’t a better place to take a world-class Waterbuck.

LICHTENSTEIN'S HARTEBEEST The flood plains and adjoining tropical savanna are home to Lichtenstein's Hartebeest. They flourish in this habitat and are extremely numerous, offering ample opportunity at taking an exceptional bull.

COMMON REEDBUCK Common Reedbuck are the most numerous antelope in Coutada 11. They occupy the flood plains, tropical savanna and pans. You will see hundreds of them on every outing.

CROCODILE Crocodile in the wild are said to grow a foot a year for the first eight years and thereafter an inch per year making a 14-foot croc a pretty old animal. The early season, from June - September, when the water is still cool, is always better as the crocs come out to sun themselves.

IMPALA

Impala inhabit the tropical savanna in breeding herds and smaller bachelor herds. For many hunters on their first trip to Africa, Impala has often been the first African animal taken.

HYENA From The Lion King, unjustly, the poor Hyena has earned the reputation of the bad boy of the African animal kingdom. These amazing animals are natures clean-team. They do very well in the Zambeze Delta cleaning up behind the lions.

LEOPARD A very worthy member of the big five, Leopard thrive in the Zambeze Delta primarily because of our anti-poaching, huge game populations and ideal habitat. They are extremely adaptable and we find them from the flood plains into the savanna and forested areas. This is one of the species our scientific team monitors and we have 2 collared female Leopards. This enables us to learn more about their movements, breeding and through good scientific management, we are always sure of a sustainable population. It is legal in Mozambique to hunt Leopard with a game-proof pack of hounds. This is about as exciting a hunt as you can have! We have a small quota of 2 Leopards per year and we have a very high success rate.

ANTI-POACHING The incredible game numbers found in Coutada 11 can largely be attributed to our Anti-Poaching Unit. This 22 man unit is predominantly made up of ex-poachers. They know how a poacher thinks and the success we have had in Coutada 11 is astounding. A unit dedicated to foot patrols and ambushes, a fast reaction motorcycle unit and the game-changer, the Dallas Safari Club Foundation Helicopter. Working together they have become a formidable force.

WILDLIFE HELICOPTERS Wildlife Helicopters based out of Coutada 11, offer you scenic flights, swamp transfers, and charters. See our world from a birds-eye perspective, the huge herds of free-roaming buffalo, elephant, lion and plains game. Visit the mouth of the Zambeze River, Mangrove swamps, day trips to nearby Gorongosa National Park, remote beaches or simply use our helicopter for a scenic flight back to Beira. The helicopter makes a fantastic photographic platform for both Still Photos and Videos. A sundowner flight or remote picnic can be tailor-made to suit you and is the perfect way to enjoy this pristine wilderness area.

COMMUNITY Without our local community directly benefiting from our safari operation, our conservation efforts will all be in vain. With this in mind, Zambeze Delta Safaris has a great relationship with these folks. The benefits are enjoyed by our whole community. This includes community beekeeping, a partnership between our local community and Zambeze Delta Safaris in honey production. Our community bee keeping project boasts several hundred hives now and offers a much-needed revenue stream to many of our participating families. The exciting thing about this operation is it will become totally self-sustainable. During the hunting season on average,we deliver more than 30 tons of freshmeat, this takes away the need for subsistence poaching. During the dry season we license, offer logistical support and coordinate a fishing program for the Barbel catfish that are so prolific in the delta, providing an additional protein source for consumption or resale. We have built a 3 classroom school as well as 3 teacher’s houses, a clinic and more recently a doctor’s house. Our newest project is community agriculture, where we assist with ploughing, fertilizer and seed. This limits, and in time, we believe will put a stop to the slash and burn practice used in our area.

SKINNING SHED Ensuring your trophies make it to the taxidermist in prime condition is of utmost importance. Zambeze Delta Safaris has a modern purpose-designed skinning shed to make sure your trophies receive the very best care available in this remote area. We import high quality salt from South Africa. Each client’s trophies are put into their own cubicle and skins are cured on racks designed to drain moisture away. Rest assured your trophies are our top priority.

PHOTOGRAPHIC AND BIRDING SAFARIS Having one of the highest game concentrations in Africa, and four of the big five, the Zambeze Delta will give you one of the finest wildlife photographic safaris. Coutada 11 is renowned as one of Africa's very best birding destinations, having in-excess of 250 species as well as the saught-after African Pitta. Experienced guides will take care of your every need and make sure that this is a safari of a lifetime, in an area where very little has changed in the last century.

RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION Coutada 11 has, without doubt, one of the very highest concentrations of wild game in Africa today. Whilst virtually every animal had reached carrying capacity for the area, there was, however, one exception, the apex predator– The African lion. In 2018, we partnered with the Cabela Family Foundation and the Ivan Carter Wildlife Conservation Alliance and undertook the biggest move of wild lions across an international border, in history. In August 2018, 24 lions were released into the Zambeze Delta. The success of this operation, now a little more than 18 months old; has far exceeded our wildest expectations. Our lion population has more than doubled. After a long absence, I’m happy to report the roar of wild lions is again heard across our flood plains at sunset.

CHEETAH REINTRODUCTION The last time cheetah were recorded in the Zambezi Delta was back in the 1800s to 1910s when author R.C.F. Maugham wrote about the species roaming the plains of the Delta in his book titled Wild Game in Zambezia written in 1914. Since that time, no records of cheetah exist as the species became extinct in this region of Mozambique sometime after. In an attempt to repopulate the Zambezi Delta with this graceful carnivore, a long-term reintroduction project was initiated. Funded by the Cabela Family Foundation, 11 cheetah were reintroduced from various reserves (where they are in excess) into Coutada 11 of the Delta between June - July 2021. The cheetah, consisting of 4 females and 7 males, were kept in a temporary holding facility (also known as a boma) for 4-8 weeks to help individuals acclimatise to their new environment. On the 27th of August 2021, the historic day arrived, as the gates for the cheetah were opened, setting their first tracks in the vast wetland expanse in almost a century. With only the southern part of Mozambique currently supporting a small cheetah population, the establishment of this cheetah population could provide a much needed lifeline for cheetahs in the country.

Hunters have always played a major part in the conservation of game in wild places. In today's world of continued pressure from anti-hunting lobbyists, we need to prove to them and the world, the value of the role that hunters play in conserving Africa’s Wildlife. With this in mind, Coutada 11 has a full-time scientist in our team - Willem Briers-Louw. His many tasks include aging every buffalo taken, tracking the lions on a daily basis, running and documenting our annual wildlife survey, gathering the data from camera traps and monitoring the more than 50 collared animals (eight species). All this information allows us to better protect our wildlife and make scientific decisions relating to quotas and take-off. Our 2019 flood plain survey (this is roughly 25% of Coutada 11) had a total of over 12 500 animals, making this area one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Mozambique and Africa!

AT THE HELM

CARLOS PACHECO FARIAAND MARK HALDANE Zambeze Delta Safaris was the first safari company to be registered in Mozambique post the civil war. The year was 1994, the same year Mark first set foot in Coutada 11. This was the beginning of a long-standing successful partnership between Mark and Carlos. Coutada 11 is a government Concession and is issued on a long lease. A good working relationship with Mozambique’s game department (ANAC), based on compliance, is essential to the smooth running of our company. Carlos handles this portion of our operation, the day to day licensing requirements for each safari as well as collaborating with communities and local authorities. Mark runs the operation on the ground, guides safaris and with his brother Glen, and heads up the marketing. In recent years we have added a strong conservation side to the operation and Carlos and Mark have been equally involved in this project. Carlos has decades of experience in the hotel and tourism industry and headed up Mozambique’s tourism board, he is also CEO of a company running and operating Hotels in Mozambique. Mark has been hunting professionally since 1986 and has guided in all of the Southern African countries as well as most of the Central African countries. He has also guided in Australia, New Zealand, and Romania. Both Carlos and Mark have had more than 25 years of hands-on experience in running Mozambique’s leading hunting operation. Showing how beautiful Coutada 11 is, is always made easier with stunning pictures. Mark is very fortunate in having Laurette by his side, always with camera in hand capturing every moment.

“I’ve been fortunate to have hunted in Coutada 11 the past 20 years…and it keeps getting better. Thanks to community projects, habitat improvement, and constant anti-poaching, wildlife numbers improve visibly with each passing season. With good camps, excellent PHs, and the greatest concentration of buffalo I’ve ever seen, the ZDS Team has developed - and maintains - a very special slice of truly wild Africa!” - CRAIG BODDINGTON

Today, virtually every species is at capacity!” - MARK HALDANE “There are only two metrics that truly matter when measuring conservation efforts - more wildlife and healthier ecosystems - measured in these two simple metrics, Coutada 11 is one of Africa’s greatest success stories and wear every
