HERE will be a strong focus on education at the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days with a range of talks all coming together under the one roof at the annual event. The fashion pavilion will change focus, with clothing exhibitors moving into the Founders Pavilion and a series of talks taking place in the newly titled, Essential Energy Fashion and Lecture pavilion. The fashion parade would also still take place, twice daily in the fashion and lecture pavilion, at 12pm and 2pm. The field days, which take place on Friday, July 15, and Saturday, July 16, at the Australian Rural Education Centre (AREC), just outside Mudgee, has embraced this change, finding most field day attendees seek knowledge. AREC general manager, Steve Garland, said there was a “whole bunch”of new exhibitors and products at the field days this year, with plenty to do and get involved with. Talks would cover a broad range of topics, but focused on regenerative agriculture. Topics included aquaculture, beekeeping, gardening and

permaculture and were presented by a range of speakers including SBS’s Costa’s Garden Odyssey’s Costa Georgiadis; Milkwood Permaculture owner, Nick Ritar and second-generation beekeeper, Tim Malfroy. Mr Garland (pictured) said these talks not only touched on some important topics facing Australian agriculture at the moment, such as the plight of bees, they were also what previous field day visitors had shown interest in. “Our feedback is that people are interested in gardening, so the No Dig Garden is back again this year, and Costa will be talking on the importance of the school garden.” Many of the field day exhibitors would also have a range of new machinery and equipment on display, as well as new innovations or inventions, Mr Garland said. “Being innovative is an approach to how you do things, not just doing the same thing each season because that’s what you did last season, or doing what your predecessors did. “It is a mindset of questioning the how and why of what we do. “Often the effective and successful methods of

conducting business, agribusiness or things in our family life have not been achieved in one huge step rather in a number of smaller increments. “Our field days event is all about that investigation, learning and finding the ways to make incremental improvements.” Children hadn’t been forgotten with a range of activities, which were also educational. Mr Garland said youngsters could learn circus skills like walking on stilts, could try their hand at fishing, pat some animals in the animal nursery or watch a milking demonstration. He said it was important for children to be catered for. “You have to have things for the children, so they don’t want to drag their parents off the site,” Mr Garland said. With activities for both the young and old it ensured a good day out for the whole family, he said. The scarecrow building competition was also back again this year. Strawbale building and rammed earth building demonstrations would return

again this year, showing sustainable building techniques. One of the previously built strawbale buildings on the

Obituary Obituary John Dunnachie 1943-2011 LONG time participant of the field days and master cooper, John Dunnachie, of Cooks Gap, has died, aged 67. His knowledge and skill demonstrating the art of the cooper will be missed. Friend, Scott McGregor, said of Mr Dunnachie: “I first got to know of John’s rare talents when I took time out with him in his shed. “Decades of craftsmanship, coopering tools, templates, bits of barrels and all manner of wood craft was the backdrop to many a long chat over the finer points of tinkering with timber. “He was most generous with his time and his knowledge built up over a lifetime involved in one of the special ‘rare trades’. “It was fascinating to watch him transform bits of kindling into

something most desirable. “He was a part of the special breed of craftspeople who make the Mudgee region such an interesting place and his friendship, his character and creativity will be sorely missed. “My sincerest sympathies to his wife, Margaret, friends and family.”

The Essential Energy Fashion and Lecture Pavilion will be filled with talks from a range of industry experts on a wide range of topics from permaculture to beekeeping to aquaponics. Organised by Milkwood Permaculture, of Mudgee, the talks are designed to give field day attendees a “short, punchy” look at the topics on hand. Milkwood Permaculture owner, Nick Ritar, said the program would run from 9.30am until 5pm on both the Friday and Saturday, with farming-specific topics on Friday and broader topics on Saturday. Having the talks run under one roof in the Essential Energy Fashion and Lecture Pavilion would also bring some centralisation to them – usually talks were run in various rooms about the site.

HERE can be no doubt in anybody’s mind that Costa Georgiadis is passionate about the environment. Anybody who had seen his show, Costa’s Garden Odyssey, will know he doesn’t hold back when it comes to getting the word out about the range of unconventional and eco-friendly gardens across the nation and sometimes the globe. After recently filming an Australia Day special focusing on the indigenous cultures and landscapes in Arnhem Land, Mr Georgiadis will be taking time out of his busy schedule to speak to the visitors of the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days of the benefits of regenerative agriculture (or as he calls it, regenag) with school gardens and bio-fertiliser in particular under the lense. “I love the fact regenag is based upon truth and simplicity and brings together the best of many disciplines, without the baggage that can sometimes come with systems, products and organisations,”he said. “These practices are being used by real day-to-day farmers, from the peasant farmers to broad-acre farmers. “Regenag is making education accessible, so that farming and quality food production is driven to a place of high priority in our culture.” Mr Georgiadis believed school

NRMA motoring and services director, Graham Blight, said staff would deliver messages designed to keep people safer on the roads during wet and cold winter conditions. “Reinforcing important wet and foggy weather road safety tips may help reduce crashes,” Mr Blight said. “Show-goers will find NRMA’s Driving in the Country free fact sheet particularly useful as it includes important information about driving in rural areas such as Mudgee.” Children will also be able to use Xbox and Wii consoles to test their hand and eye co-ordination. Secret men’s business By KIM CHAPPELL

ROM last November many Mudgee women may have seen their men disappearing for long periods of time – sometimes even whole days. But it wasn’t something they were worried about, according to Mudgee Men’s Shed committee chairman, Tom Dudley – rather they enjoyed getting the men out of their hair. “Men, when they retire can become a burden around the house, or that’s what my wife tells me,” Mr Dudley said. “They miss the company of men they had in the workplace.” But the Mudgee Men’s Shed has changed that. Since late last year it has been giving men a place to go for man-time: be that having a chat and a cuppa, or getting involved in a range of activities from woodwork to games.

But it hasn’t just benefited retirees. Men of all ages, from school children upwards have got something out of the opening of the shed. St Matthews School has been using the facilities for its woodwork classes while new classrooms are built at the school. A lot of the equipment in the setup is the schools, but it will be replaced as needed when the school takes it back to the classroom, while a metal work area is also underway. A vegie patch has also been established: the shed is located on the old community garden at the Australian Rural Education Centre (AREC) site. “The winter crops are now in, and they should be going nicely for the field days,” Mr Dudley said. Computers had been set up, mainly donated machines, so

computer classes could be run from the shed as well. Plans are underway to bring early-stage dementia patients to the shed for a break from their care facilities, and also to let some of the folk at the retirement village pop over for an afternoon a week on the community bus. “It’s a meeting place of men to sit and talk. “We have a darts board and are getting a pool table, and are looking at card afternoons. “There is various work still going on with the shed.” Giving men of all ages a place to go was something important for the community, Mr Dudley said. While women often had social circles established prior to retirement, men often didn’t. And it’s taken some planning and work to get the men’s shed going. It’s been three years since the idea was first floated – the subsequent time was spent

The humble scarecrow will take many shapes and forms as the imaginative minds of field days visitors take part in the second annual scarecrow building competition, thanks to sponsors Essential Energy. “He is from one of Lisborne Park’s mares Valmont Maddison, and his sire is Maurice’s Tullymore Ambassador, so he is a great example of the strong imported Scottish blood.” Mr Irvine’s experiences with the draught horse breeds date back to his youth in Ireland. “I grew up on a dairy farm and though we had tractors and things, we still used Clydesdales and Shire horses as

work animals, like they were bred for,” Mr Irvine said. “Tullymore stud has been going for about 40 years, with some great show successes. “Lisborne Park was established about 19 years ago, and they have also been very successful with their Clydesdales, with wins at the Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney Royal shows, among others.” ■ Visit site L22, 747.

HEY are well known as the gentle giants of the horse world and they’ll once again be wowing crowds at Mudgee field days. The Clydesdale and Shire horse exhibit is hosted by two studs – the Tullymore Clydesdale and Shire horse stud in Merriwa and the Lisborne Park Clydesdale stud in Glendon Brook. Tullymore owner, Maurice Irvine, a judge with the Clydesdale Horses Society at both a State and Federal level, said the studs had travelled to Mudgee for years to show field day visitors their prize winning purebreds. “Traditionally throughout the day we will give a few discussions on the history of the breeds, which can be quite interesting,”Mr Irvine said. “We also talk about what they meant to communities throughout the horse era, as well as their upkeep, costs and show presentation.” This year the studs will be represented with one award winning horse each. “We will be bringing down our Shire gelding, Tullymore Sir Lancealot, who was the winning Shire horse gelding at the Sydney Royal Show this year,” Mr Irvine said. F YOU’VE ever wondered how beef is broken down and what all the cuts can be used for, the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days has the answer. Local butchery, S and S Meats Mudgee, owner, Clint Ramien, will be presenting demonstrations on breaking down a forequarter and hindquarter of beef and lamb, and what each cut can be used for. “I will be talking about the general things people don’t know, there isn’t much waste,” Mr Ramien said. “Farmers send cattle to abattoirs, and they send the meat to us, and (farmers) are getting their own meat back.” He said a lot of farmers weren’t aware they got “all their meat back” when they gave it to their local butcher to be broken into cuts. “The amount of questions we get asked about cuts and what to do with them is unbelievable. “It’s good to have a chance to educate people on what each cut is for.” He said a lot of people wasted money, buying a higher quality cut they knew, for a job which really only needed a cheaper cut. Lots of people requested rump steak, which sold at about $21 a kilogram,for making

stroganoff, when round could be purchased,at a cost of about $16/kg. “It’s just as good, that’s what you get going to the butcher: the right advice. “Hopefully we’ll get lots of questions at Mudgee field days about what to do with the cuts, and cheaper ways of doing things.” He said pre-made meals at butchers shops were generally where these underused cuts ended up. “We take the cheaper cuts and turn them into the stuff which is sold in the window at the shop, and we’ve never had a complaint.” He said just a few weeks ago

ARMERS and their top dogs will be travelling from across the State to participate in the annual Cudgegong Valley Championship, sponsored by Western Magazine, and held once again at the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days. Trial co-organiser and NSW Yard Dog Association committee member, Jason Pearce, Mudgee, said the championship trial had always been popular. “The trial has been held at Mudgee for the past 15 or so years,” Mr Pearce said. “It’s a big event for people who take part in the NSW Yard Dog Association’s trials.” While the numbers for this year’s trial have not been

finalised, Mr Pearce said they were looking forward to similar numbers to previous trials. The dogs and their owners will have the opportunity to take part in five different categories – Encourage, Maiden, Novice, Improver and Open. Trial co-organiser and NSW Yard Dog Association senior vice president, Greg Reeves (pictured), said dogs who were in the Novice category were not allowed to compete in the Improver or Open categories. “On the days the Encourage, Maiden and Novice categories will all be held in conjunction with each other,” Mr Reeves said. “The first three categories are for the younger dogs at the trial. “The Improver and Open

categories will be held on Saturday and are for the more experienced dogs.” There will be prizes for the place getters. “The champion of the Cudgegong Valley trial will also qualify for the NSW Championship, which will probably be held next year, where they will compete against the winners from trials across the State,” Mr Reeves said. The championship will be judged by the association’s vice president, Nevell King. “Each year we have a different judge for the trial, and Nevell is very experienced,” he said. ■ Entries for the Cudgegong Valley Championship trial close on July 1, and entry forms are available from www.yarddogsnsw.com

Information on straw bale building BUILDING with straw bales uses renewable materials that are otherwise a waste product from crop production. The benefits are the bales give extremely high levels of insulation and save energy as the completed building requires less energy to heat and cool. Ausbale is the peak straw bale building group for the industry in Australia and organises the demonstrations and information available at the field day. Builders such as industry veteran, Frank Thomas, and Sam Vivers are on hand to give practical demonstrations of the techniques involved and explain the advantages of these buildings. Straw bale building courses are conducted at AREC on the field days site and participants have travelled from as far as New Zealand. The course and the training site is possibly the only one of it's type in Australia. For more information about learning to build with straw bales see www.arec.com.au for course information.

Rammed earth wall construction demonstration LOCAL Mudgee builder, Justin Penney, and his wall construction team will be starting work on rammed earth walls across the two days of the event this year. The stabilised walls give buildings high thermal mass and an earthy tone. Local concrete and landscape material supplier, Hi-Tech Concrete, has provided the materials for the project which when complete will feature polished concrete floors and cast in situ bench tops. These uses of concrete and associated materials are becoming more common and visiting the demonstration will give an insight into the flexibility of materials such as concrete, aggregates and cement in a sustainable building.

Fence invention is four star I

NVENTOR, Bruce Nies, will be heading to Mudgee field days this year to show people his

invention, the Four Star Strainer assembly. Mr Nies, Coonabarabran, has previously shown his strainer assembly at last year’s AgQuip field days, where he said it got “a hell of a lot of interest”. Mr Nies has been developing the strainer assembly for about five years, and said it had been very successful. “This assembly can be used absolutely anywhere, and in any conditions,”he said. “And all you

need are four star posts, a driver and a spanner – you don’t even need any machinery to put it in and it takes absolutely no time at all.” The star posts can also be easily attached and adjusted and gates swung easily, he said. The assembly has been tested in drought and flood conditions. Mr Nies hoped to attract the attention of hobby farmers at the Mudgee field days. “You really have to see it to believe it,” Mr Nies said. “A lot of people are

probably thinking that there’s no way it could be that easy or simple, but if you come and see me at the field days, I’ll show you that it can be.” Mr Nies’s Four Star Strainer assembly (patent pending) will be available for sale at the field days as well. “The cost is $60 per unit and the unit is made up of one frame of four star posts, plus two stay brackets and bolts,”he said. “I’ll also have an optional 10 foot stay post available for $35.” ■ Visit site 209.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to showcase the industry,” said Dale Brown, Ravenswood alpaca stud, Cooks Gap. “Often alpaca is a winter product, so it’s a good time to get access to the public.” Alpacas, as well as products including hand-knitted garments and commercially produced products, including those made with dyed fibre, will be on display and for sale. There will be knitting classes at 10am and 2pm daily, showing the differences of working with alpaca fleece, while Mudgee breeders will answer questions about the animals. “Most people want to know if they spit – that’s a

When they started in the industry five years ago, females were $3000 to $3500, but nowadays they could be picked up for $1000. The overall price drop was the result of more availability of animals due to increased breeding and more stud owners. But the better quality animals still received high prices. Also changing was the price received for coloured animals, which had always tended to be cheaper than the white alpacas. Mr Brown said colours were tending to higher prices today. “We breed blacks and it’s getting more popular. “Just as products go through

Nuts about a low risk income F

OR farmers looking for a low risk and secure crop, Clem and Vanessa Cox believe hazelnuts may be the answer. As owners of Australian Gourmet Hazelnuts in Mudgee, the couple believe hazelnuts can offer a long-term income and nuts for the table. “We don’t just sell hazelnut trees,” Mrs Cox said. “Our aim is to make hazelnut growing profitable, simple and easy. “Our commercial pollinator grid ensures maximum production of high value varieties.” Mr and Mrs Cox (pictured right) have been propagating hazelnut trees and processing nuts for more than a decade. “Our variety mix all bear delicious nuts – but of different sizes,” Mrs Cox said. “Growers can pick up as a single operation, and separate varieties by running the entire crop through a size grader.” With more of Australian Gourmet Hazelnut’s growers in production, the Coxes imported a mechanically operated (rather than suction) nut harvester from Italy to service developing clusters of growers in several regions in the Central West.

The design of the Super Jolly 2800 harvester (pictured below) separates trash and husk, and blows clean nuts into the rear bagging unit or towed bin. “It’s designed to enable harvest by a single operator, is fast, efficient and clean – plus it operates well in grass,” Mr Cox said. HE origin of Salts of the Himalayas is certainly a story to be told. The product behind Melissa McGoldrick and Locke Wright’s business was discovered when Mr Wright’s father travelled to South Africa to play cricket. “Locke’s father, Tim, saw Himalayan salt being fed to livestock when he was visiting farms in South Africa at the end of last year,”Ms McGoldrick said. “When Tim returned to Australia, he purchased some Himalayan salt lumps and began feeding it to his own sheep and cattle, and found there was a considerable difference in their coats and overall condition. “He was telling us about it when he came back and we decided to bring it to Australia.” Despite having only started their Uralla business in January, Ms McGoldrick said they had attracted a lot of interest. “Himalayan salt contains the 88 trace elements that are essential for both humans and animals. she said. “The product is totally natural with no toxins or pollutants, is hand mined in Pakistan and is

ESPITE the turmoil in the solar industry of recent times, regional Australians are keen to invest in farming the wind and sun, with more than 110,000 participants investing in the NSW Solar Bonus Scheme. With the State Government’s recent backflip, Premier, Barry O’Farrell, announced all participants of the Solar Bonus Scheme would receive their 60 cent a kiloWatt hour payment in the original contract. Forty megaWatts of extra participants are also to be included in the scheme above the original 300MW cap. What is undecided is what new investors in the grid connect system will receive for the power they generate and put back into the grid. The prototype has been in use on Bill Croll’s property at Barraba for eight months. NSS proprietor, Murray Schaefer, said Mr Croll rang him the first time he used it to say he had run

Mr Spring-Brown said this trend had continued with the latest release, the DFS series. “We have become well-known for value-for-money tractors and in recent years we have expanded our range to include models with specifications you would only expect to see in more expensive tractors,” he said. “Our deluxe range now comes standard with an Italian manufactured joystick control on front end loader models. “A single control enables smooth and precise operation of all front end loader functions, including opening and closing the four-in-one bucket. “This set up enables the operator to get on and off the machine from either side.” The design now also had a four-point hydraulic hose removal to facilitate the quick release of the loader. Another benefit of the DFS series was shuttle shift, which improved the ease of control and operator comfort. “A convenient shifter makes changing between forward and reverse effortless,” Mr SpringBrown said. “This can be a big advantage when shifting material with a front end loader.” He said having the control

IFTY-one year-old Mudgee resident, Robert Neale, who began losing his sight just two years ago, knows first hand the importance of seeking help early to stay mobile and independent. Mr Neale is encouraging local residents experiencing problems getting about, due to vision loss, to visit the Guide Dogs NSW/ACT stall at this year’s Mudgee Small Farm Field Days. Mr Neale said the worst part about losing sight, was losing the ability to drive. “Losing your sight is an awful experience,” he said. “The earlier you seek help the easier it is to learn the skills to get around independently.” A recent Guide Dogs survey revealed many people waited too long before seeking help. The organisation, which is the leading provider of guide

dogs and other mobility services like the long “guide” cane for people with impaired vision, wants to dispel the myth that you have to be completely blind to receive its services. Mr Neale, whose sight has deteriorated due to two detached retinas and other eye operations, said the help he

had received from local instructors from Guide Dogs had been key to helping him maintain his independence. He has been learning how to use a cane and electronic aids, including talking GPS mobile phone software and a handheld sonar-driven Miniguide that vibrates when it detects

objects, similar to a reverse beeper on a car. More information about the free mobility services Guide Dogs provides to Central West residents will be available at the Mudgee field days. Statistics reveal more than a third of people with eye disorders live in country areas, with farms being a hotspot for eye injuries. Guide Dogs community education co-ordinator, Jennifer Moon, said to prevent vision loss they encouraged regular eye health checks. Splitting back pain gets chop

ORN, bred and living in one of the coldest places in Australia, Whitlands, Victoria, David Burder knows a thing or two about chopping firewood. It was 16 years ago when he was splitting another 10 tonnes of firewood with his hand held axe, that the idea of building a machine to do the job seemed well worth the effort. With a background in engineering, Mr Burder (pictured) set about designing a hydraulic wood splitter that was efficient and easy to use, and took the back breaking work out of the job. At this stage most of the available machines on the market used a horizontal system where the split timber fell onto the ground, requiring a lot of double handling. By changing the configuration to a vertical system, the operator worked at a comfortable bench height and could concentrate on the job at hand. A back-saving log lifter, hydraulic power pack, and a lever-styled splitting blade, was added and the first prototype of the Superaxe was born. Fast forward to 2011 and Mr Burder’s business, Whitlands Engineering, employs 16 people – a handful of which have been working with the business since the early days. Two of Mr Burder’s children are involved these days too – Clare, 27,

Throughout the years Whitlands Engineering has evolved into a specialist designer and manufacturer of firewood processing equipment to suit most requirements. The current range has expanded to cover three brands, the Superaxe, Aussie Chopper, and Rex. The Superaxe and Aussie Chopper ranges are designed for domestic and farm operations, while the Rex range caters for larger operations.
