The Mudgee region is one of the oldest wine districts in Australia When you step into the Mudgee region you are welcomed by a homely and loving environment – a real gem! With more than 40 cellar doors and a large array of locally grown produce to dazzle your tastebuds, Mudgee is building its reputation for producing some very well known brands and some great produce. A visit to Mudgee is much like spending time with your family and friends. The locals love what they do and are very passionate about the products they present. Wandering around town you will be blown away by the quality and diversity of cafes and restaurants, which produce amazing coffee and meals alike. The great tastes are built from the diverse local produce sourced from within the region. Don’t miss the farmers’ markets and the opportunity to taste great olives, tapenades, honey, hazelnuts, pistachios, jams, cheese, lamb, beef and free-range pork ... the list is endless!

What is

organic?

farmer’s daughter WINES

foodies organic seasonal produce

As the popularity of organic products increases, the mystery remains as to what the term “organic” actually means? It’s quite simple. Growing produce organically means cultivating crops without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic/ chemical fertilisers. Instead, mulch, manure and fertilisers produced by natural means are applied to enrich the soil. Botobolar Vineyard in Mudgee was founded in 1971 and is recognised as the forerunner of organic viticulture in Australia. Today, there are several certified organic wineries and food producers in the region. So if you want organic, look for the organic logo! Kevin Karstrom, Owner & Winemaker Botobolar Vineyard

You will taste the difference at the Mudgee farmers’ market. Chat to specialist food producers before making your purchases. All the products have been grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by Mudgee producers. “We hope that you will come and visit us all at the farmers’ market and get an understanding of why we of the Mudgee region are so passionate about our local produce”. Simon Staines, President, Mudgee Fine Foods.

Peter Bourne the ‘WINE MAN’ “Mudgee is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions. However, the drive and energy of the current bunch of winemakers sees the region at the cutting edge, with exponents of organics and biodynamics, pristine rieslings, finely focussed chardonnays, new-wave Italian varieties and traditional bold, full-bodied reds. Mudgee offers something for all winelovers and it’s a great town to visit.”

Burnbrae Wines

an experienced, passionate and talented bunch From traditionalists to vibrant young bloods, Mudgee winemakers continue to break new ground. More than willing to share with you their secrets, these custodians of family owned boutique enterprises seek to make a difference by crafting a sublime selection of wines. The Mudgee region is blessed with a unique tapestry of terroir that has made it highly suitable for viticulture. The district’s rich history encompasses the early endeavours of German settlers in the late 1800s and an Italian influence which heralded the introduction of sangiovese and barbera grape varieties in the 1970s. Significantly, Mudgee established an early yardstick of quality for chardonnay that was recognised by

moothi estate

Julia ConchiE Winemaker, DiLusso “I have had the amazing opportunity to work with alternate varieties in Mudgee. Across the region, there are more than 20 varieties being grown and produced, spanning Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French and more. The core varieties we all know and love such as chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot are produced in many styles. Through diversity in altitude, there are stunning rieslings being produced from vineyards on the valley floor at about 400 metres, to over 1100 metres at higher elevations. So for me as a winemaker, working in the Mudgee wine industry is incredibly exciting and offers many opportunities due to the diverse and innovative nature of the region. I believe this provides the same exciting opportunity to people when they taste Mudgee wines.

avant-garde winemakers outside the region and contributed to the growth of modern Australian chardonnay. The region’s success is due to its unique ability to produce outstanding table and fortified wines. Today, Mudgee continues to undergo a renaissance with the establishment of new varieties and introduction of modern equipment by an energetic group of young winemakers who take inspiration from the past. Bunnamagoo Wines winemaker, Robert Black, produces table wines using chardonnay, semillon, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon fruit that thrives in the Mudgee vineyards. The winery also cultivates tempranillo, a variety native to northern Spain, and riesling. Mudgee is a truly remarkable area that provides robust, full-bodied reds with tannic power and texture, and white wines that are fruit laden, aromatic and refined. It continues to be recognised as an age-worthy region that satisfies its loyal followers, yet it can intrigue and surprise fashion-conscious consumers in an increasingly fickle market.

40th

the Mudgee Wine Show By definition, the Mudgee Wine Show only accepts wines that have been crafted with grapes grown within the Mudgee region. This allows wine judges not only to reward producers with medals and trophies for their successful entries, but it provides the scope for the wine show to retain an important educational focus for local winemakers. This development is instrumental in allowing local brands to continually improve the quality of their wines. Reflecting the true spirit of the region, the Mudgee Wine Show brings to the table a broad range of winemaking philosophies and myriad wine styles for visitors to enjoy.

Renee Foster

2011 Wine Judge, Mudgee Wine Show “In 2009, I was an associate at the Australia and New Zealand Organic Wine Show when Thistle Hill Riesling was awarded wine of show, so I know Mudgee can produce the goods. It’s an interesting region made up of large companies and smaller boutique wineries, so it’s hard to generalise. I am hoping to see some good, interesting alternate or lesser-known varieties too.”

James Halliday Leading Australian wine critic “There is currently an undeniable sense of self-confidence and energy within Mudgee producers that is being communicated by the glass.”

Robert Black

Winemaker, Bunnamagoo Wines

“I fell in love with Mudgee when I made the first of innumerable visits in the early 1970s. The name, meaning nest in the hills, was bestowed by generations of Aborigines who lived and hunted there, and it speaks (eloquently) for itself. The protective barrier of The Great Dividing Range has saved the region from rampant tourism, and first-time visitors wonder why they have not previously come to enjoy this peaceful, welcoming region with its great wine and great food.”
