A Message from our

Happy Fall Ya’ll! I’m in Heaven! The leaves on English Mountain are starting to change and the evening air is crisp.

I don’t know how to describe, in words, the beauty of this perfect place God has placed us in. I am so thankful to God for bringing us here; and at this time of the year, I am extra thankful. Having lived in South Florida for 21 years, I truly missed the change of seasons I grew up with in upstate New York as a child.

Autumn in Tennessee is the very best. People come from all around to visit the Smoky Mountain National Park and Gatlinburg. How blessed we are to live in the foothills. Last weekend we started setting up our fall decorations (See the front cover for a picture). There is just something about this time of year that fills me with so much joy. I love spending the weekends cooking and crafting, and we’ve even sat out on the deck in front of the fire pit.

My family celebrates several birthdays during autumn, my own included. We don’t do great big birthday bashes anymore but we do get together and celebrate. Last Thursday, we celebrated my daughter Ashley’s 20th birthday. My gosh, I can’t believe I have a 20-year-old-daughter! She just got her first car and she’s enjoying the freedom that comes with it, I, on the other hand, knew that was going to happen, but knowing that doesn't make it any easier.

We’ve got lots going on at WebTV4Women, as usual, but it’s all good and we’re excited about the upcoming Christmas season. We’ve already begun recording our Holiday Survival Webcast and WAIT until you see the new organizer!! You’re going to LOVE it! We’ve got lots of new ladies contributing to it this year and each one has a unique message to share. Stay tuned for registration details.

With all of the ugly stuff going on in our world today, we’re thinking of ways to help you through these tough times. The wonderful thing about our ladies is that most of them have been through rough times and have survived and thrived thanks to their faith. If you’re feeling a little hopeless and maybe even flat out faithless, we’re here to help. Don’t hesitate to contact any of our ladies with questions and many of them offer great books and other resources to help you through.

I know many of you are worried about the future. I pray you will try your hardest to Simply Believe that God won’t let you down. He promises never to leave or forsake you and to uphold you. Do you believe that? In the 11 years since I’ve given my life to Him, He has never failed me, EVER! He won’t fail you either, JUST BELIEVE! Local author draws on potluck recipes and culture to shape novel series Pam Mellskog , Longmont Times-Call LONGMONT — A hot dog and tomato soup concoction epitomized the worst potluck recipes popularized in the 1960s and 1970s.

But Longmont author Linda Evans Shepherd easily found tastier fare to list on the first page of every chapter in The Potluck Club novel series (Revell Books) she co-writes with Eva Marie Everson.

“My mother is the potluck queen of Beaumont, Texas. So I have quite the recipe heritage to draw from,” said Linda.

Linda remembers, during her childhood, her mom toting a white casserole trimmed with tiny golden flowers to church socials, PTA meetings and office luncheons.

Favorites then included a barbecue brisket with a secret ingredient — liquid smoke — sevenlayer salad and pineapple upside-down cake.

With five books in print, a sixth due out in 2010, Shepherd said the challenge continues to be weaving each recipe into the story line.

The novels explore friendships formed during monthly potluck prayer meetings held in a small, high-country Colorado town.

Linda said the fictional characters enjoy the same slice of Americana she has cherished since childhood. No one at a potluck gets stuck cooking or cleaning up. And everyone can sample another cook’s creativity and hospitality.

“It’s a little spoon of this and a little taste of that, and suddenly you have a heaping plate of home-cooked love,” she said.

Linda used the Mississippi Mud Cake, in her new novel, Taste of Fame.

“The cake is the ugliest thing you ever saw,” she said. “But when you take a bite of it — unless you’re diabetic — you’re going to the moon.”

Mississippi Mud Cake Ingredients: 2 cups sugar 1 cup shortening 1 cup flour 1 cup chopped pecans 4 eggs teaspoon salt cup cocoa 2 teaspoons vanilla Instructions: Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each. Sift flour, cocoa and salt. Add to mixture, mixing well. Stir in vanilla and pecans. Bake in a greased and floured 9-by-13-inch pan for about 35 minutes at 300 degrees. Remove from oven and spread a large bag of miniature marshmallows on top while cake is hot.

Frosting Ingredients: 1 stick margarine cup cocoa 1 box powdered sugar cup evaporated milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions: Sift cocoa and sugar. Add melted margarine, milk and nuts. Mix well and spread over marshmallows while cake and frosting are still both warm.

A Positive Word From Karol Ladd Host of the Positive Living Channel

What to Do When You Feel Overwhelmed You are giving a speech in two days and you haven’t even started writing it yet, your house is filled with work men who are constantly in the way and your kids need to be at three different practices all at the same time and you volunteered to bring your friend dinner tonight! Life in the fast lane can be overwhelming.

Most of us have experienced those times when we feel as though we just don’t have the strength, energy, time or ability to accomplish the tasks ahead of us. It may be an overloaded schedule or responsibilities with an aging parent or chasing several preschoolers around the house. Perhaps a tragedy or trial in your life has gripped you with anxiety and fear. I want to reassure you and encourage you that you are not alone. Take one day at a time and begin to turn your eyes off of the overwhelming circumstances and onto the God who loves you.

God will not leave you in your darkest hour, although you may feel as though He is far away. As a believer in Christ we have the reassurance that His spirit dwells within us and will not leave. Jesus said to his followers, “I am with you always.” There is a peaceful reassurance in knowing that God is with us. Look to Him for strength and wisdom as you face your challenges. Day by day, give your anxieties to Him and thank Him for what He is doing in your life. Seek His wisdom in rethinking some of the activities you are doing, and make changes if necessary.

Another reason I want to reassure you that you are not alone is because others have walked similar paths. You are not the only one who has gone down this road. Find comfort in the fact that others have made it through and you can too. You can find strength and comfort in

A Positive Word - Continued connecting with people who have journeyed down these familiar roads through support groups and friends.

Take steps forward. Don’t stay in a rut, and don’t allow yourself to be gripped with fear.

Move forward asking God to lead you, guide you and equip you. You may not be able to conquer everything, but you can do something. One step at a time. You remember how to eat an elephant don’t you? One bite at a time!

Day by day, one step at a time with eyes on the Lord (not on your circumstances) you will get through this. David said, “I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.” Psalm 62 May you find your comfort and strength in Him today.

Remember: You are not alone – God will not leave you.

You are not alone – Others have gone through similar challenges.

Turn your focus on God – Seek his comfort and wisdom.

Take your focus off your circumstances – it will only discourage you.

Take time to be Grateful – Thank the Lord for what He has done and will do.

Take Steps Forward – Do what you can, make changes if necessary.

Take One Day at a Time – Step by Step move forward.

What’s For Dinner?

Nothing says “Fall” like a hearty, home cooked meal. With the days growing shorter and the evening air cooling down it’s a great time to gather around the family dinner table and enjoy a hot, delicious meal while sharing the events of the day. Rose from Tennessee sent in this scrumptious and healthy recipe for chicken pot pie. This recipe was found on the EatBetterAmerica.com website. It’s easy to make, delicious and PERFECT for those crisp autumn evenings. Thanks Rose!

"Healthified" Chicken Pot Pie Prep Time:15 min Start to Finish:1 hr 5 min Makes: 8 servings (about 1 cup each) Ingredients: 1 bag (12 oz) Green Giant® Valley Fresh Steamers™ frozen mixed vegetables 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 1/4 cups fat-free (skim) milk 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1 can (10 3/4 oz) condensed 98% fat-free cream of chicken soup 1/4 cup fat-free sour cream 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts (1 1/4 lb), cooked, cut into bite-size pieces (about 4 cups) 1 Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crust (from 15-oz box), 1. Cook and drain vegetables as directed on bag.

2. Heat oven to 375°F. In 2-quart saucepan, mix flour, salt, poultry seasoning, pepper and milk with wire whisk until blended. Stir in onion. Cook over medium heat 4 to 6 minutes, stirring constantly, until thickened.

3. Stir in soup and sour cream. Add chicken and cooked vegetables; mix well. Cook, stirring frequently, until thoroughly heated. Pour into ungreased 2-quart round casserole.

Unroll pie crust; place over hot filling. Seal edge and flute as desired. Cut slits in several places in crust.

4. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown and mixture is bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Family Traditions

My husband and I are entering the fourth quarter of a century on earth.

Our grown children live in four corners of the United States, raising their own children. We all see each other at odd moments, gathering whenever and wherever our busy lives take us. We are fortunate to live at the foot of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, enjoying some of the best scenery the West has to offer.

Each year around the end of September or beginning of October, I pack a picnic supper of tuna fish sandwiches, fruit and cookies, and a big thermos of hot, fresh, black coffee for the two of us. Our dog Henry jumps in the car and we are off to Rocky Mountain National Park where the yearly ritual of elk bugling takes place.

Fall is mating season for elk and each bull elk gathers his own harem of females, fending off other bulls.

As dusk approaches, the animals begin to emerge from the wooded areas and congregate in open meadows. Park Rangers tell us that the bulls do not eat or sleep during this season, standing guard against others. The eerie cries of the elk echo through the valley as the groups of females shift, move away and are herded back by the vigilant males.

This yearly wildlife ritual, the clean crisp smell of pine and the cool evening air lent an air of healing for us just after September 11, 2001. I had asked the question of God: Where were you that day? In the meadow at the foot of the mountain, I got my answer: My child, I have been with you always.
