T

he 2018-2019 academic year has been one of significant achievements. For the fourth consecutive year we were named the best private university in Mexico by El Universal newspaper’s ranking of “best universities”. We strengthened our position in the nation and abroad, and obtained awards for different areas of the university proving, with every step, UDLAP’s quality. Thanks to the community’s effort, we achieved 100% accreditation for all our licenciatura programs, and we engaged in social programs for disadvantaged groups in our country, earning recognition as a socially responsible organization. To make clear our efforts to promote research, 98% of our professors have graduate degrees, and a high proportion of them belong to CONACYT’s National System of Researchers. Their research projects allow the UDLAP university system to remain on the frontier of knowledge in each of its disciplines, which makes us one of the best private universities in this regard. The excellence of our internationalization program is based on the number of foreign professors on campus. Thanks to our international recruiting efforts, combined with our visiting professor program which each semester attracts 30% of them from universities in the United States and Europe, one of every four professors in campus is foreign, thus contributing academic excellence, global experience, and constant pertinence for our students. The academic mobility program for students has programs in over 250 universities worldwide, allowing them to acquire a global experience that is indispensable in the current world. Finally, our academic mobility programs for the faculty lets them choose from over 90 teaching institutions abroad – among them Cambridge University in the United Kingdom – to keep up with new international educational trends.

Our integral formation model – a fundamental part of our teaching system – continues to work through our cultural and sports representative teams. The former traveled to different parts of the world, showcasing the artistic quality of the university, enriching the internal cultural environment, and being present in over 300 national and international stages; the latter proved their outstanding participation by maintaining the first places in different sports competitions. Being a financially healthy institution has allowed us to continue to make investments and to renovate the facilities for all academic and administrative support services, thus offering the quality that distinguishes us. We will continue to work on reaffirming our mission to be the best private university in Latin America and continue to prepare citizens who understand their role in the development of a democratic, supportive, and competitive society.

PROGRAMS ARE ACCREDITED BY A NATIONAL ORGANIZATION

The results achieved by udlap during this period have surpassed expectations in the development and makeup of the study programs, which have always had the highest quality standards. The accreditations of study programs are proof of the excellence that characterizes the university. As part of the continuous improvement program, in 2018 we maintained and achieved accreditation from national organizations for all applicable licenciaturas.

UDLAP’S LICENCIATURA IN BIOLOGY IS THE ONLY FOREING ACADEMIC PROGRAM TO HOLD AN ACCREDITATION BY THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF BIOLOGY OUTSIDE THE UK

Since the recent accreditation from ABET for the Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering licenciaturas, 55% of the licenciatura study programs in the School of Engineering are accredited by an international organization.

National Accreditations UDLAP maintained its commitment to the academic quality of its programs at the licenciatura and graduate levels. During this year, 15 licenciatura programs maintained their accreditation; therefore, 100% of the study programs that can be accredited by national organizations now have this distinction.

In August 2018, the Licenciatura in Biology obtained the Advanced International Accreditation from the Royal Society of Biology, a leading organization in Biological Sciences from the United Kingdom, which recognizes universities that have contributed significantly to the advancement of biological sciences. UDLAP is the only institution outside the UK to have this type of accreditation.

The university continues to further the professional practices program to provide students with work experience before they finish their studies. During this year 1,749 students participated in 529 organizations in the education, health, food, cultural, communications, construction, hotel, automotive, industrial, financial, and governmental sectors. During the last few years, the number of students has increased as shown in this graph.

FOR THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR,

Rankings

For the fourth consecutive year, the leadership has been maintained as a private institution in El Universal ranking. In 2019, we stayed as the best private institution according to the opinion of academic peers and employers. In this same ranking, the licenciatura in Marketing obtained first place for the sixth consecutive year, while the licenciatura in Business Administration obtained first place for the third time. The Actuarial Sciences, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Financial Strategies and Public Accounting programs obtained second place. UDLAP was the best in 15 academic programs among private universities. Similarly, the Reforma newspaper ranked 13 academic programs in the top three places.

UDLAP’s prestige is based on a philosophy of quality, which permeates everyday activities at the university. As a consequence, the institution continues to remain as one of the best options in higher education in Mexico.

The magazine América Economía, in its raking of Mexican universities in 2019, placed UDLAP as the second best private university in the region. This same publication, in its Latin America MBA ranking, placed UDLAP´s MBA as second best.

UDLAP COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION Medal This faculty award considers performance in teaching, research, consulting, continuous education, and administrative support activities. The distinction is granted annually to a full-time professor of each School. The year’s winners were:

2018 lázara guadalupe ordaz caballero

A training program was designed this year to reinforce oral communication, listening comprehension, written expression, and reading comprehension in English. Thirty full-time professors took this program. We also certified 122 full-time professors in the English language, using the APTIS diagnostic tool, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). As a result of these actions, the courses taught in English increased 72% from the Spring 2018 term. The Program to Update Teaching offered 113 courses, of which 65% were on campus. These courses are geared towards top-teaching performance and use of educational technologies. 270 full-time professors and 112 part-time professors participated in this program.

Likewise, 12 online courses were given in which 101 full-time professors participated. These courses contained tools to improve indicators and indices for scientific productivity, strengthening abilities to prepare research articles and publish them in prestigious international journals. In order to enrich the dialogue on plagiarism in higher education, and to establish actions to avoid its occurrence, in the Fall 2018 term we offered lectures and workshops for the academic and student community with national and international speakers. 125 full-time professors participated in these activities.Â

International Academic Mobility One guiding principle of UDLAP is internationalization. Every year we encourage our faculty to complement their academic experiences in another country. Conversely, we invite foreign professors to teach or research here thus enriching the multicultural environment that distinguishes our institution. In 2018, over 20 UDLAP professors did research or were visiting professors in universities in Germany, Bulgaria, China, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Morocco, and the United Kingdom.

MEXICO’S NATIONAL RESEARCH SYSTEM (SNI)

The objective of research and/or artistic creation projects is to create knowledge that will train high-level human resources, so they will present, divulge, promote or publish their results or products in different forums. The number of full-time professors who are part of CONACYT’s National Research System (SNI) increased in 2018, so now 110 full-time professors are recognized by that organization.

Research Projects In 2018, 28 additional research projects received outside support, with funds that came from CONACYT, companies, and other organizations. We seek to balance the source of the funds in order to strengthen research that benefits society, industry, and other organizations, and that at the same time develop technology and increase knowledge.

At present, UDLAP has more than 250 current research projects, including 28 granted by CONACYT, companies and national and international organizations. We seek to balance the source of the funds in order to strengthen research that benefits society, industry, and other organizations, and that at the same time develop technology and increase knowledge. In 2019, research projects financed internally increased 19% for 213 projects, in which 50 full-time faculty members participate. Thanks to CONACYT´s grants, and with the support of a multidisciplinary group, we developed a Policy of Open Access and an Institutional Repository of academic, scientific, technological, artistic, and innovative knowledge for UDLAP. We installed and configured the DSpace platform, with collaboration from specialized technical personnel, to offer the community the Institutional Repository service. We also connect-

ed the university’s collection of digital graduate theses with CONACYT’s National Repository. Currently, 39 doctoral and 344 master theses of the UDLAP Institutional Repository (RIUDLAP) may be found in CONACYT’s National Science, Technology and Innovation Repository. 2018 brought the evolution of the UDLAP Entorno Magazine, that during two years has published seven issues, and is now included in the Latindex magazine catalogue. It is important to mention that Latindex publishes the complete content and text of academic journals that belong to digital newspaper libraries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal, seeking to propagate scientific knowledge published in the Ibero-American region. The magazine is available in its website, which had over 10,000 visits in 2018, from countries such as the United States, Colombia, Peru, Italy, Spain, Germany, Canada, and others.

Aztecas Culture The Cultural Representative Teams contribute to the integral formation of students, promoting the development of citizens who are committed to their environment and highlighting values such as respect, social commitment, fellowship, solidarity, and honesty. These groups showcase the talent of students in activities such as music, dance, and theater. In 2018 there were different representations in Mexico and abroad. 15th Cameralia Edition. This is a music festival held in Capilla del Arte (UDLAP´s Art Chapel), which offers public performances and lectures by students, alumni, and faculty of the Music Licenciatura. This year, the UDLAP Cultural Representative Ballet Team, directed by Pedro Beiro and Bertha Gómez Gandol, offered their first performance of a complete program at the Guillermo y Sofía Jenkins Auditorium. Also, a student in the Music Licenciatura played with the Contrapunto orchestra, which represented Mexico in the Youth International Symphony Eurochestries 2018, held in France. Wellbeing During this year the university, through its different areas, offered workshops, talks, lectures, and information material regarding risky behavior topics to promote long-term wellbeing. As an answer to the needs and problems of the student community, visual and audiovisual material was created regarding the responsible use of alcohol, emotional self-regulation, and resilience, which were shared in the university’s communication media, in social networks, and in areas such as medical services, credit and collection, library, gym, and computer rooms.

OUTSTANDING STUDENTS

There were also joint activities with external organizations in order to develop strategic alliances and offer information on topics of interest to students. Some examples are the “Pilot with a Star” lecture, with the National Security Commission through the Federal Police, which raises awareness in young people to prevent car accidents and to promote good road cul-

ture. The campaign “Is it Love or Violence?” with the Marketing Department, promotes the development of healthy relationships and the prevention of violence in couples. On this same topic, there was a workshop to outline violence modalities and types, in collaboration with the Puebla Women’s Institute. An additional activity was the Student Essay Contest, held for the eighth time, with the topic “Virtual Connection and its Effects on Interpersonal Relations”. The medical and sports rehabilitation services - staffed by specialized doctors, nurses, and paramedics - offer first-contact medical attention. In 2018, the medical staff saw 15,000 patients, 82% of which were students. This area also promotes health care and wellbeing by identifying and preventing risks and fostering healthy habits through permanent campaigns for the UDLAP community.

The University looks to create and establish national and international networks with graduates, public and private organizations, and society to promote collaboration and mutual benefits, thus consolidating UDLAP’s outreach through social, sports, cultural, artistic, scientific, and business programs both in Mexico and abroad. More than 380 academic support agreements were signed this year with international institutions for professional practices and/or social and collaboration services.

University Extension Liaising with the public and private sectors was strengthened throughout the country with training and consulting programs that reached 5,200 people in 140 locations, and generated income of over 15.6 million pesos. We offered 26 continuous education programs to companies, government agencies, and the general public. We collaborated with the World Bank, the Mexican Stock Market, and Certiport, a company that validates and certifies digital skills. Regarding consulting, we offer business solutions to public and private companies, relying on the knowledge and experience of the university faculty and staff. It is important to mention the inauguration of udlap-anafapyt, a paint and coating laboratory that is a pioneer in providing exclusive quality testing to companies in Mexico’s painting and coating industry. It has vanguard technology equipment and can test and grade industrial products and supplies following the current guidelines.

sentation of the catalogue for “Treasures of the Hispanic Society of America”, an exhibition of the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts, with support from the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation and BBVA Bancomer. It cooperated headquarters with the International Festival of Silent Movies (FIC) as one of the projection sites in Puebla to show movies accompanied by live music. Over 45,000 national and international visitors visited Capilla del Arte in its cultural season. Of these, 58% were from the central-southern part of the country and 5% were international visitors. In the 2018 summer program, 96 children participated and learned about science, technology, art, and care of the environment, plus awareness of the importance of a healthy coexistence, creativity, and innovation.

Socially Responsible Outreach UDLAP looks to strengthen social responsibility in the student body through socially responsible actions and programs that awaken their concern and desire to help others. To achieve this goal, there must be a strong and permanent link with organizations focused on social causes that benefit society. This year 1,874 students joined 184 social service organizations, 29% of which are in the government sector, 7% in the business sector, and 64% are NGOs. Since September 2017, UDLAP created a new program for student volunteers, which incorporates three elements

In 2018 there were 16 work sessions, 12 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday, collaborating with organizations that work on different social issues such as recycling, reforestation, food banks, and free medical services. 152 people participated, 88% were students and the rest administrative staff. Regarding inclusion actions, the project “Work Certification for People with Disabilities” was started, which strives to aid people with disabilities, in poverty, or in vulnerable situations so they may have access to better employment opportunities by learning basic Microsoft Office skills, specifically Word and Excel. The project had three phases: training, certification, and employability.

provided by eduit group to the organizations that publicly support one or more disabilities. the training is on microsoft office applications and there is an exam for each one. upon finishing there is a certification and the student becomes a “tutor”, who will now be responsible for training users with disabilities in the organization.

the tutors and people with disabilities go to the certification center in udlap to take their exams on the corresponding applications. they require at least 700 points to obtain the certification.

people with disabilities who obtain the certification are included in a national job placement office. we follow-up from the first company that hires them until the third, if applicable.

During the second half of 2018, we worked with three organizations, of which Fundación Teletón México, A.C. (CRIT-Puebla) certified three tutors and six people with physical disabilities; Hechos por Ángeles, A.C. certified one tutor and one person with intellectual disabilities; and Vínculos de Apoyo para Lograr la Recuperación Autista en Puebla, A.C. (VALORA) certified three tutors and three people with intellectual disabilities.

After the September 2017 earthquakes, TVUDLAP, in conjunction with the Los Angeles in México Foundation - founded by Mexican actresses Ana de la Reguera, Kate del Castillo, Karla Souza, and Olga Segura - started to document the actions of this foundation in San Miguel Tecuanipa in Tochimilco, Puebla. TV UDLAP Following an agreement made in 2017 with Cinépolis, there was one more year of monthly recordings of the internal communication program Cinepolito TV, which provided “backstage” coverage of the XVI International Film Festival of Morelia. UDLAP, committed to serving society, was the site for two debates between Senate candidates in the 2018 elections. Ten UDLAP departments participated in this production, giving the support necessary to cover the event. As part of the collaboration with SMARTCITY NET, the technical team of TVUDLAP was in charge of developing content for the SMART CITY EXPO LATAM channel, recording over 80 bulletins and editing over 43 videos in different formats for social networks. Relationships with movie distributors continued to grow, allowing us to show the premieres of movies nominated for this year’s Oscars, as well as many other movie premieres throughout the year. There was a special coverage of the Mexican elections, with the support of the department of International Relations and Political Science, and seven roundtable discussions with professors, students, and political experts, in a broadcast that lasted over six hours. For the first time we had a Communications and Media Production student journalist at Electoral Institute (INE) reporting on the election’s results.

UDLAP OUTREACH

During the year, we covered the most important national and international movie festivals, with the collaboration of Paola Rojas, Daniel de Iturbide, and Claudio Ochoa in Televisa (public television and YouTube); also, the second screen broadcast of the Oscar Ceremony, produced from UDLAP Jenkins Graduate School, with over 20 students in the areas of production

and research, including personalities such as Roberto Sosa and Areli Paz, and – remotely - Miguel Mier and Anne Wakeefield.

Alumni Outreach We increased the efforts to improve inks with our national and international alumni and show them the educational quality of the university. In 2018, the data of 4,471 alumni were updated, representing 13% of the 33,497 graduates. In our communications with alumni we achieved 584,792 direct impacts through mailing campaigns that promoted university’s activities and projects, 21% more than last year. Also, we interviewed 49 graduates (28% more than the previous year) and published their answers in our alumni social networks, in notes in the UDLAP webpage, UDLAP Talent, and UDLAP Pride. In this way, their trajectories, professional development, and the activities they carry out in their field of study were made known through different university social networks, blogs, and the Visión exaUDLAP magazine. The 18th issue of Visión exaUDLAP had a print run of 24,500 and was sent to over 20,000 addresses in Mexico, as well as to UDLAP’s strategic allies. Over 80 collaborators worked on this issue, including 15 alumni who participated in the “UDLAP Trajectory” and “UDLAP Expertise” sections. Throughout the year there were 35 alumni social events, and book presentations and lectures delivered by graduates. The UDLAP Benefit Plan is a program that offers benefits and preferential treatment to the UDLAP Community in different areas, and now includes more than 270 participating companies, both in Puebla and the country.

ADMINISTRATIVE EFFICIENCY

ADMINISTRATIVE EFFICIENCY

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019

49

One of UDLAP´s main objectives is to be financially stable to fulfill the university’s mission through the sound management of its resources. In 2018, as in previous years, we had positive financial results, which allowed the university to make the investments needed to continue offering quality academic and administrative services.

Financial Situation The university’s financial statements for 2018 (currently being audited) and 2017 (audited) reflect its financial stability. We have current assets that can cover the short-term obligations, and have net positive working capital. Cash and equivalents represent 122% of the short-term obligations. As a result of its operations, the university created cash flows equivalent to 211 million pesos in 2018 (161 million pesos in 2017), and is able to finance investments in real estate, furnishings, and equipment with its own money.

Considering the solidity of its present situation, financial institutions have given UDLAP a vote of confidence by extending lines of credit totaling 340 million pesos, of which, at the end of December 2018, only 87 million pesos had been used, 22 million pesos less than at the end of 2017. The operating result in 2018 shows a surplus of 119.3 million pesos (compared with a surplus of 90.2 million pesos in 2017). The increase is due mainly to increases in tuition, the university’s main activity, and control of costs and expenses. It is important to mention that the financial statements are audited every year by a prestigious firm, which has approved them without amendments.

ADMINISTRATIVE EFFICIENCY

UDLAP is considered one of the most reliable institutions in the country because of its commitment to transparency and accountability. This has earned it the support of sponsors and donors. With the backing of strategic allies and through the participation of commercial brands in cultural, sports and academic events, and university publications, the university received over 4.2 million pesos in 2018. As part of the UDLAP Capital Campaign, we continue to reinforce the UNE Program, which calls on society and the business sector to aid academically outstanding students. The basis of this operation is to allow students to find companies willing to sponsor them and back them financially. During this year, Student UNE and Corporate UNE received enough funds to grant 182 scholarships. The graph shows the evolution of these programs throughout the years.

Efficiency of Institutional Processes Every year all university areas make improvements to the process of serving the university community. A committee consisting of full-time faculty from all schools evaluates the radical or gradual efforts that contribute to improve and support academic and administrative processes and services, intending to increase the satisfaction of internal and external users. The relevant institutional improvements are. Over five thousand students used a new app to follow their registration process in the Fall of 2018. More than five thousand students used it to enroll and 68% of returning students used it to register or modify their choices at some point during the process. Thus, information requests and advance applications were answered in this manner instead of using the registration system. An authentication service was put in place to consult 100% of the resources contracted by the library outside campus. Available outside resources increased from 46 to 66, which now covers 100% of the services contracted. An information session was recorded to explain in a simple way the steps that students must follow to meet the professional practices process. This will make it easier for users to access this information whenever they need it.

Development of a technological tool that digitally delivers the students’ insurance policy, 24/7, optimizing processing time of information through an insurance-verifying platform. Update of the “ServiceDeskWeb page which makes it possible to register an IT request in the self-service site in three steps, on a channel open for service 24 hours, to be helped on the following working day. Over 10,000 visits were recorded in the year, which makes it one of the ten most used websites at UDLAP.

ADMINISTRATIVE EFFICIENCY

Renewal of the CCTV campus monitoring platform. Risk was diminished when 89 security cameras were added, 20 servers and 10 work stations renovated, and the monitoring software version updated. In this manner the number of unrecovered articles due to a system failure decreased 90%.

58

Maintenance and re-configuration time of the equipment in halls and classrooms went down 30%; assignment and delivery time of computing equipment for new employees also decreased 30%; time for printing services for employees decreased 32.7%, as did the number of reports regarding printing services with respect to 2017.

Institutional Recognitions

Reception of the IS0 9001:2015 certification for the processes of the UDLAP library.
