Everyone geeks something and whatever you geek, the library can connect you with resources to support and develop your passions or even discover new ones. Public libraries inspire and empower. Everyone is welcome. Almost anything can be explored. This campaign offers a fun and meaningful way to raise awareness of how libraries play a vital role in bringing value to their communities, and that libraries need community support and adequate funding to stay strong.

Farmington Reads!

Our first-ever Winter Reading Program for adults encourages leisure reading among both bookworms and those who need an incentive to read more. Registration begins Monday, January 14; register early – the first 10 people to sign up at each building will receive a special prize!!!

The Children’s Department wants every preschooler in our community to read Do You Know Which Ones Will Grow? Featuring Susan A. Shea’s imaginative, rhyming text and Tom Slaughter’s bold illustrations with fun flaps, this book nurtures scientific thought and fosters the joy of reading. We will donate a copy of the book, along with a booklet of supporting activities, to every preschool and child care facility in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

Battle of the Books

Regular Programs for Infants to Age 5

This program, organized by the Young Adult Department, encourages reading and gives recognition to readers. Participating 7th and 8th graders at Farmington/Farmington Hills middle schools form teams, read from a selected list of six books and then compete with other teams by answering questions based on the books. The first 60 teams who sign up for this event will be part of the Battle.

Join us for story times with stories, songs, rhymes, and activities. Siblings are welcome and there is no registration required.

Baby Time Ages Birth to 16 mos.

The program begins on Friday, February 15, when the books will be available at both branches of the Farmington Community Library. Forms and instructions, which must be completed and returned to participating middle schools, are online at www.farmlibteens.org and in the teen areas of both branches. The Questioning Round takes place Monday, Apr. 15 at the William Costick Activities Center in Dublin Hall at 7 p.m.; all participating teams are eligible.

Teen Advisory Board Grades 7 to 12 Board members promote Library use and reading to their peers, help in planning and implementing Library programs, and write reviews and content for the Teen Scene Blog. Hours served on the board go toward volunteer requirements at area middle and high schools. Applications are available at www.farmlibteens.org. “If someone else can do something, you can do it too” is a phrase often heard from my father while I was growing up. Well, I took it to heart, and as an adult I don’t resist tackling any project. This brings me to why I geek our Library; I geek the vast amount of information that resides within it. When deciding to take on a task, I can count on finding the initial information I need to get started. It doesn’t stop there; if more detailed information is needed to finish the activity, that is also accessible through my Library. Thanks to my Library, “I CAN do that,” and so can you.
