The Colored Car is a loving tribute to Patsy Ford, a thirteen-year-old girl who grew up in an integrated east-side Detroit neighborhood in the 1930s and experienced the Jim Crow laws at that time. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form with help from Wayne State University financial aid experts. Great Michigan Read

This book club for the entire state is presented by the Michigan Humanities Council with support from Meijer and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In the 2013-14 selection, Annie’s Ghosts: A Journey into a Family Secret, reporter Steve Luxenberg rivetingly uncovers the when, why and how his mother kept secret her mentally disabled sister. Participating 7th and 8th graders at Farmington/Farmington Hills middle schools or home schools form teams, read from a selected list of six books and then compete with other teams by answering questions based on the books. The first 60 teams who sign up for this event will be part of the Battle. On Friday, February 14 the books will be available for checkout at both branches of the Farmington Community Library. Forms and instructions are available at area Middle Schools, online at www.farmlibteens.org and in the teen areas of both branches. The questioning round takes place on Monday, April 14 at the William Costick Activities Center in Dublin Hall at 7 p.m.

We’re Joining the Family Place Libraries™ The Farmington Community Library has begun an affiliation with the national network of Family Place Libraries™. We are pleased to have received grant funding through Family Place Libraries™, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Farmington Friends of the Library. Family Place Libraries™ emphasize: supporting children’s learning through play; providing specially designed spaces, collections, and programs for children; and offering child development classes, books, and DVDs for parents and child care providers. Accordingly, we are expanding our services by adding creative play stations with toy kitchens, cars/trucks/trains, dollhouses, farms and blocks. We are also offering a series of 75-minute-long parent/child workshops called Play and Learn with Me for 1-, 2-, and 3-year-olds. Guest experts are available and registration is required for each date; we encourage every family to attend at least three days.
