Welcome & AIA Memphis Leadership

I am honored to introduce you to the first edition of folio, an annual of current architecture and design. As you will see in these pages, West Tennessee architects and their creative teams are shaping the public and private spaces not only in Memphis, but around the country.

Memphis has a unique legacy of artistic creation and collaboration - whether it be in music, food, medicine, or art. As Architects, we have a responsibility to continue and advance that legacy.

The Architect’s position as chief collaborator seeks to bring together the community – our clients, construction, the public, government, finance, and ultimately the user of the space, to build in brick and steel lasting places of meaning. Thanks goes out to all those involved in the crafting of the work shown on these pages and for allowing us to be a part of your team.

Enjoy! Victor Buchholz, AIA 2021 President, AIA Memphis

West Tennessee is a curious postage stamp of land. Situated along the Mississippi River, it is ripe with commerce, history, progress, and endless stories to tell. Her built environment has evolved over generations to elevate some of the world’s most notable musicians, culinary professionals, trades craftsmen, and more.

Dig a little deeper, however, and you will find a community with undeniable scars caused by a world, at times, on fire. Engaging smart, thoughtful leaders to craft a more equitable and inclusive place is key to healing. The remarkable professionals at AIA are doing just that.

Each morning these extraordinary individuals rise early and work late, imagining a world for us as it ought to be - and then orchestrating the time and talents of others to bring it to fruition. Honoring them in these pages has been a gift.
