Becoming an Architect and the University of Memphis Department of Architecture

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

High school graduates seeking to become an architect should pursue a degree at an accredited school. At the University of Memphis Department of Architecture, the professional “4+2” degree sequence is comprised of:

•Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture • (4 year pre-professional degree) and Master of Architecture (2 year professional degree; NAAB accredited)

The University also offers:

•Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture (4 year professional degree; accredited by the Council for Interior Design)

The Department of Architecture is known for its community engagement activities, emphasis on the various elements of city building, and focus on sustainability. In addition to its academic programs, the Department is home to the Center for Sustainable Design and is a partner (with the Department of City + Regional Planning) in the University of Memphis Design Collaborative.

Path to Licensure Earning an architectural license is required to call yourself an architect. In Tennessee, license applicants must:

•Complete a degree in architecture or an architecture-related field approved by the • Board Obtain three (3) to seven (7) years of architectural experience satisfactory to the

Program (AXP)/Intern Development

Program (IDP) administered by the National

Council of Architectural Registration Boards • (NCARB), and Pass the Architect Registration Examination, (ARE®), administered by NCARB.
