Letter from the Publisher
Aloha! Today is our seventh snow day. No school. Work at home. Finish a magazine. The entrepreneurial spirit doesn’t rest on the snow day. It simply pours a fresh cup of coffee and walks to the desk. Opens up its laptop and gazes out the window now and then, pretending it is in the snowy mountains on sabbatical, enjoying the change of scenery. It picks through ideas, pulling out the best ones. Meanders 8

through previous choices, evaluating what worked and what required retooling. Even though it experiences moments of doubt, even panic at times, it understands that it is what it is – a spirit that thrives on the road to Hana. Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 have a 64.4 mile stretch of highway called the Hana Highway connecting the towns of Kahului and Hana in east Maui. It takes about 3 hours to
drive with no stops because it winds mercilessly and has extremely narrow passes, including over 59 bridges, 46 of which are a single lane. There are 620 curves. The dirt road beyond Route 31 is occasionally closed to traffic due to landslides. This section is forbidden on most major rental car contracts, not because it is dangerous but because it is remote and hard to reach if your car needs service. Virtually all of the route passes through the lush, tropical rain
them. Photos carefully chosen and placed throughout were of candid moments, caught on film and preserved in these very special places where they could be emotionally revisited over and over. When I shared with Carolyn that I wanted to include one as the last page of the magazine and asked her to comment, she told me they had been married in Maui and that this was from a reception with friends that followed. Hawaii is their favorite place and (this is just too much fun) their special song is Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Ken’s company, Roxul, USA, relocated them to, of all places, the King’s city of Memphis. Funny how life works sometimes. Hana. Talking with Gail Lindberg, CEO, and Dr. Dlabach, co-founder of OrthoOne, I enjoyed hearing about their winding road through building a presence in Collierville. How they had persevered through uncertain moments even though they were clear on their intent to change how orthopedic care was delivered. Cliff-diving into a venture like D1 must have been quite the adrenalin rush, fraught with risk but once they sliced through the surface of the water, swimming around in the lagoon below, it turns out, is very warm and accommodating. Worth the journey.
forest. I can think of no better analogy for entrepreneurism. When I interviewed Ken and Carolyn Cammarato for their home tour, it really was less about the home. Beautifully adorned and crafted with incredible attention to detail, it is a gem in our town. No question. But what struck me most was their interaction with one another. It was the unspoken energy between
If your work spirit is longing for a journey, start with the Collierville Chamber of Commerce. In this issue we celebrate with Fran Persechini, President/CEO, as she steps off the tour bus from her own winding road and enjoys retirement with her husband, Fred. We celebrate all that she has worked to inspire during her 20 years of service to the Chamber and appreciate the foundation on which so many companies rest the early building of their business aspirations. We enjoyed peeking back with the Morton Museum’s column to see how the Chamber has, in many ways, shaped a mindset about loving Collierville and inspiring people today to “Live Life Local.”
included dogmatic advocacy for the revitalization of the Town Square that we so enjoy today. Leaders like him who are willing to pursue endeavors as a public servant in spite of harsh criticism and antagonism inspire the leaders that fill enormous shoes. John Lennon once said, “Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.” This couldn’t be more true than for the entrepreneur. The safety and security of working for a large company has its privileges but for those of us with our own companies, we know the privilege we enjoy of our own journey. As I write this I see a huge flock of robins in our front yard. One just gobbled two red berries while I watched through the window. George and Mason, our neighbors across the street have just pulled out their sled and have their golden retriever, Zoe, out front sliding down the hill in their front yard. My girls are getting on their coats, flannel pajamas beneath because of their enthusiasm and are heading over to play. When I sign off of this letter and hit send (work), I’ll be out there with them (Hana). Work then Hana? No. Work is Hana.
The March/April edition of TourCollierville Magazine is dedicated in memory of Mary K. Kidd, 1944 – 2015, as she, today, arrives in her own spiritual Hana. Aloha ‘oe.
Most importantly, we celebrate the spirit of Alderman Jimmy Lott, whose journey March/April 2015

Ken, Carolyn and Xander moved to Collierville in August 2013 and immediately realized that the pace is a little different. Moving here from Chapel Hill, NC, Ken now serves as Vice President, General Counsel & General Manager for all North America operation at Roxul USA Inc. His office is in the new plant in Byhalia, Mississippi. Drawn to Collierville because of its small town charm, educated population and excellent schools, the Cammaratos went to work to build their custom home which includes all USA-made appliances, Roxul all-organic insulation (the first in Collierville) and handcrafted surfaces throughout.

EMEMBERING
LDERMAN
Jimmy A. Lott, 76, passed away January 13 at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, the town he proudly called home for more than four decades. Originally from Selmer TN, Jimmy was a cherished and much-loved resident of Collierville and a respected businessman as President/Owner of Tull Brothers Glass Company where he and wife Dot worked side by side in the family business. An Alderman in Collierville, he was first elected in 1987, served as Vice-Mayor, and was serving his sixth term as an elected official at the time of his death. A heart attack in 2009 slowed the conscientious, hard-working man down only a little and he was soon back and involved in civic and church activities. While the effects of the heart issue sometimes brought challenges, it didn’t keep him from enjoying what he called ‘the great life in Collierville’ and fulfilling his many obligations. A man of strong Faith and allegiance to God, family, friends and country, he was
JIMMY LOTT
a veteran serving with the U.S. Air Force during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Always one to freely give his time and knowledge, he was a volunteer member of several Collierville Boards including the first Board of Zoning Appeals, Library Board, Parks Advisory Board, Collierville Planning Commission, Design Review Commission and on two commissions for long-range planning of the Town. The third longest serving Alderman in the history of Collierville, he was named the Collierville Chamber of Commerce as “Person of the Year” in 2009. The designation honored his long career and as stated in an article in Collierville Magazine, “a recitation of Lott’s accomplishments and civic activities in Collierville are as long as a Town Square Sunday stroll.” He is a member and past president of the Collierville Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, a graduate of Leadership Collierville, a Mason, a Scottish Rite member and held a much-coveted membership in the unique Collierville Coffee Club.
A member of Collierville First Baptist Church, he was a current member of The Board of Trustees and formerly served as a Deacon. Always one to nurture to the needs of others through his business, political and spiritual life, he volunteered for 15 years as Construction Coordinator on projects from Alabama to Alaska for World Changers, a Christian mission program that takes young people to underprivileged areas where they work on projects like building homes. Mission work was very important to Jimmy and he grew the program from 300 in 1990 to engaging some 26,000 during his last year of involvement. A diligent, dedicated leader as well as a doer, he was always ‘hands-on’ with any project from business to church work, even to the 25 years he spent manning the down marker for Collierville Dragon football games. At the February 23, 2015 meeting of the Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen, a resolution was approved to rename a portion of US Highway 72 as the “Jimmy Lott Parkway.” With this unanimous decision from the Board, the late Alderman, Jimmy Lott, will be memorialized in honor of his decades of service to the Town of Collierville and to the Collierville community. He is survived by Dot, his devoted wife and best-friend throughout their 57 years of marriage. Other survivors are son, Allen and wife Hollee of Collierville and three grandsons who lovingly called him ‘Poppa’, James (Kelly), Christopher (fiancée Samantha), and Austin. ___________________________ Town of Collierville Public Information Office

University of Memphis Collierville Center Opens in Historic District
The University of Memphis Collierville Center was officially opened with a reception and tour, January 8, 2015. The University of Memphis Collierville Center is now officially a part the thriving historic district just off the Town Square in downtown Collierville. With the cut of a ceremonial ribbon the Town of Collierville has a brand new 27,000 sq. ft. one-story building situated on 8.85 acres that was specifically designed to focus on the community vision and guiding principles now known as the Collierville way. “This site has a long and rich history of education and we are both pleased and proud to have this world class regional asset for higher education in the Collierville Historic District”, Stan Joyner, Mayor of Collierville said in remarks during the reception. “Today is about growth and progress and we are proud to be a part of that growth and look forward to a long and prosperous partnership with the University of Memphis.”

Collierville Mayor Stan Joyner and Dr. Karen Weddle-West, University of Memphis Provost lead the group of dignitaries in the ceremonial ribbon cutting.
The new center, located at 215 W. Poplar Avenue, is a 27,000 sq. ft. building on the west side of 8.85 acres fronted by Poplar on the North, Walnut Street on the East and College Street to the South. “In recommending the architectural design of the building, we borrowed liberally from the unique details of the historic Collierville High School,” Reb Haizlip, Principal of Haizlip Studio said. “The portico-styled entrance reflects the look and feel of other historic structures in the area and fits well within the town square district.” U of M has held classes in Collierville, on the grounds at Carrier Corporation since1999 usually with some 1200+ students in attendance. Prior to the Carrier center, classes were conducted at the High School or Cox Community Center. With more than 125 in attendance, the gathering included neighborhood residents, officials from the Town, The University of Memphis and special guest David Lillard, Tennessee State Treasurer. The ceremonial ribbon cutting was 38

performed by Mayor Joyner, Collierville Aldermen Tom Allen, Maureen Fraser, Billy Patton and John Worley. U of M Officials included Dr. Dan Lattimore, Dr. Rosie Bingham and Dr. Karen WeddleWest, University of Memphis Provost who addressed the group at the reception. “This is a great collaborative effort of skills, expertise and commitment to continuing education and extended programs. The unwavering support by all is deeply appreciated,” Dr. Weddle-West said. The University anticipates an even larger presence in Collierville with the new building, located in the heart of the town, just off the square. Class content will include undergraduate classes, degree programs and classes taught in a hybrid mode, defined as 25-75 percent of the content taught in class and the remainder online. Classes begin at the Collierville Center, January 20. The primary entrance to the U of M, Collierville, will be accessed from Poplar Avenue at Petersen Lake Road which now
extends across Poplar via an additional traffic signal. There is designated parking with 235 spaces, facing Poplar Avenue. A pedestrian entrance from College Street, allows for ease of walking to the Town Square dining, retail and business district. The U of M location is adjacent to a parcel of land rich in Collierville heritage that can be traced to the original purchase price of $50. It became the location of Bellevue Female College, Bellevue Conservatory and Miss Holden’s Seminary and the historic High School building is now the site of Collierville Schools Administration Central Office. “Design matters to Collierville, especially in the historic district. The Town staff has done an excellent job in reflecting a similar vintage feel in a newly designed building,” Mayor Joyner said.

David & Drews
Maureen Andrews walked into our office looking for extra copies of the January/ February issue of TourCollierville Magazine. Her daughter’s wedding had been profiled. As we chatted she commented about Ashley Lawhorn, a special education student we profiled in the inaugural November 2014 issue who had been crowned the 2014 Collierville High School Homecoming Queen. Maureen’s son, David, had been crowned the Collierville High Winter Formal King on January 30, 2015. He has Downs Syndrome.
Our student body has done it twice in the same academic year - honored kids who would have never expected to be the recipient of the school’s highest social honor even though they are unique. What an atypical choice from a group of “typical” kids. Maureen was equally astonished. I told her we would have to squeeze in a mention. The magazine was already filling up and our editorial choices had been made but this was so news-worthy. It had to be included because the town needed to highfive its students! Maureen and I kept talking, though, and what was originally a mention extrapolated into a wonderful story. I had to write it. ++++ The loving nature of a kid with Down Syndrome is no secret. They exude enthusiasm and goodwill. The Collierville Schools do a brilliant job of integrating these students into typical classrooms -
likely for the student’s adjustment but with a far, far greater social impact: the broad acceptance of these kids into social circles. David has a younger brother, Drews, the youngest of 8 children in the Andrews household. (Yes, 8.) David and Drews are both seniors at Collierville High and both love basketball. Drews is a member of the varsity squad and takes David to every practice and every game. David, too old to quality for varsity, plays on the Junior Varsity team instead. During the pep rally game pitting seniors against the teachers and staff, David earned Mr. Blanchard’s honorary designation as MVP - because he was the high scorer for his team. The crowd went wild. As Maureen continued telling the story she paused for a moment to take a text message. She graciously apologized for the interruption “You know,” she said, “David is exceptional but who you really need to know is his brother, Drews.” “David has diabetes,” she continued. “Drews was just texting me his numbers. He checks his insulin levels throughout the day at school and keeps me informed so that he can adjust David’s meds if necessary.” Drews sticks by his brother during most every aspect of their life together - home, school, basketball practice, even going out with friends. “The kids take him out all the time,” says Maureen. “He’s just another kid to them... plus I think they enjoy taking Weasley around town.” Weasley is a black lab and David’s service
dog. He has been trained to sense when David is nearing a medical emergency. “Weasley is another whole story,” Maureen continues. “Keep going,” I say. The Andrews received Weasley from a corrections facility whose inmates train the dogs for just this purpose. The men who are selected for this must achieve near perfect status for their conduct and the program is incredible selective. Detainees literally live with the service animal they are training and develop connections with the animal that surpasses understanding. For the trainer, this dog represents the only source of companionship in an otherwise harsh and unforgiving reality. The self-worth that comes from training the animals gives these men something to live for and a sense of having done something good for the world. As Maureen continues, I question if I am breathing. The lump in my throat grows. “Three of my children and I went for a week to learn how to work with Weasley,” she said. It was a very thorough program and incredibly well done. On the last day of our training we were taken to the correction facility where the dogs had been trained. We went through all of the necessary screenings - which for us was pretty scary. We were grouped with our children and our new companion animals while the detainees were lined up in front of us. As we stood there the inmate who was standing directly in front of me leaned forward and whispered, ‘hey ma’am, March/April 2015

what’s the name of your dog?’ I didn’t know what to say - was a bit afraid to talk. But David wasn’t afraid. ‘Weasley!’ he stated loud and proud. At once there was a stir among the prisoners as they looked back at one of the guys near the back who was visibly shaken.” Most of the dogs were black labs. As it turns out, that trainer had been told that Weasley, his only companion and the product of so much hard work, would be used for breeding and would not be given to a family. He had been so deeply saddened until this moment, when he saw that his friend would be taking care of a truly unique young man who especially needed the care of a smart and faithful dog. The other prisoners quietly registered their own joys throughout the yard. The energy was hard to contain. The Andrews were allowed a few minutes with Weasley’s trainer before leaving. “He came to us and explained what he had been told,” Maureen said. “He leaned down and grabbed David by the shoulders and said ‘you take care of my dog, young man.’ His voice shaking. He then squatted in front of Weasley, tears streaming down his face now. ‘You take care of this child. He will depend on you so much more than we knew.’ He kissed the dog on his head,

hugged his ears and walked away from us. He must have felt that he was giving away his child.” As she finishes her story, tears are pouring down my face. “We are just so blessed,” she said. “We have absolutely no idea. Even with all of the trials that we face let’s just be real for a minute. We are some of the most blessed people on the planet.” I nod and slowly begin to shuffle my notebook when... “PRAISE JESUS!” she shouted. I jump in my chair, stunned. It was very unexpected. I chuckle nervously. “Praise Jesus that was Weasley’s trainer’s favorite command. They have to learn at least 45 and perform them perfectly in order to qualify for a home. When you tell Weasley ‘Praise Jesus’ he stands on his hind legs and dances in circles.” I laugh out loud. Praise Jesus, indeed, for experiences like these that fuel us. These little slivers of sunlight in trying times that speak to a greater good in the world. Praise Jesus for service dogs, little brothers, gigantic families and men who work to make right on past poor decisions. Hallelujah. Amen. __________________________ by Amber Lombardo

Choosing a
TIPS
• Choose a program that is based on each child’s interests and natural curiosity – this allows children the opportunity to direct their own learning. • Ask for credentials, experience, and training of the teachers/counselors. • Check the health and safety practices of the program. Make sure you are comfortable that the program will be able to handle your child’s unique needs. • Inquire about the daily schedule of the program. Does the program combine songs, stories, exploration, art, physical activities and learning adventures in a safe, nurturing environment? Ask how much freedom a child has to choose activities. • Ask for references.
Summer Program According to research conducted by the National Center for Summer Learning, which is based at the Johns Hopkins School of Education in Baltimore, Maryland, summer learning loss accounts for about two-thirds of the difference in the likelihood of a student pursuing a college preparatory path in high school. As these findings indicate, keeping children’s brains challenged throughout the summer is crucial, since the lack of learning that occurs during these months has both shortterm and long-term consequences. Keeping a child’s day consistent throughout the summer months keeps the brain focused and helps prevent learning losses during the summer. In addition, this can potentially ease the anxiety that often accompanies transitioning into a new classroom or school come fall. Research has shown that programs like The Goddard School that have specific learning goals, use learning and developmental standards and are ageappropriate are ideal in preventing summer learning losses. Remember, learning should be fun! And since 85% of what we know as adults we learn by the age of three, it is important to establish that love for learning from birth onward by giving your child experiences that nurture exploration, discovery and creativity in a safe, age-appropriate environment.

FRAN PERSECHINI On November 12th, 2014, during the Collierville Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon, Fran Persechini, CEO/ President announced her retirement to a surprised audience. In the months that followed, dozens of letters, emails and congratulations flowed in, wishing her well and showering her with gratitude for her two decades of service. On February 11th, the Chamber’s Annual Meeting, along with the tradition of passing the gavel to the incoming board chair, was a tribute to her accomplishments, complete with Mayor Joyner declaring the day “Fran Persechini Day.” She had clearly warmed a community with her dependable smile and trademark Boston accent. 48

She and Fred arrived in Collierville in August, 1994 when the Army transferred them, ending a 25+ year world-wide jaunt that included living in Korea, Italy, Germany and numerous locations around the US. During her Army career she served battalion families during deployments to Saudi Arabia and Somalia and volunteered in numerous capacities before arriving in Collierville. Fran was enamoured by the charm of the Town Square and was thrilled to receive a position with the Collierville Chamber of Commerce, which at the time was housed at the Train Depot. With approximately 200 members, cataloged by index card, all Chamber administration was performed by typewriter.
Today the Chamber has grown to over 700 members, has built its own state-of-theart headquarters and planted a number of community initiatives including the Collierville Education Foundation and Leadership Collierville. Members enjoy monthly meetings (normally filled to capacity), Collierville Magazine, Business After Hours, Ribbon Cuttings, the Business Expo, Golf Tournament, Young Professionals Council, Women’s Professional Group, Toastmasters and countless education opportunities. The Chamber’s Economic Development initiaves have resulted in the production of two profile videos (with a third slated for 2015) as well as “Open for Business,” a portion of their website devoted to doing business in Collierville.

When asked what makes a successful Chamber leader, Fran quoted from a recent article in Toastmaster Magazine (“Leading with Love” by Linda Allen, ACS, CL): “You may think that leadership is about you, your skills and your experience, but leadership is really about others—all the people you deal with in business, in your community and even in your family.” The best leaders enroll those around them. Fran has a special gift for that because it is an authentic act, one that comes naturally because she is genuinely interested in those around her and in the well-being of our beloved town. Enjoy your new journey, friend. You’ve certainly earned it. March/April 2015

The Chamber’s Early Days Since its creation in 1968 the Collierville Chamber of Commerce has been an active community supporter. Originally named the Business and Professional Men’s Association, the group officially changed their name to The Chamber of Commerce at their 1968 annual meeting. Mr. T.F. Wooten was chosen as the first President. The organization operated out of the Historic train depot from 1989-1999 and a few other locations before moving into their current spot on Halle Parkway.

Collierville was ahead of the curve with the “Live Life Local” mentality. The Chamber of Commerce has been creative in their efforts to promote Collierville’s economy and support for the community from its beginning. In their first year they created the “I Love Collierville” campaign in an effort to encourage residents to shop in Collierville and stimulate population growth. The promotion offered prizes given by merchants to customers through a Bingo game; patrons had to visit different businesses to fill their card. The campaign included swag like lapel buttons, bumper stickers, and 6 highway banners; an article from the May 8, 1968 issue of the Collierville Herald states, “By Tuesday evening nearly every Collierville auto had a bumper sticker that read ‘I Love Collierville’.”
The campaign ended with a three day carnival, known as the Watermelon Festival. The watermelon Festival was an exciting celebration. Activities at the festival included a watermelon eating contest, carnival rides, merchant displays, and auction. The 26th Miss Collierville was appointed the Watermelon Queen and was responsible for crowning the Watermelon Princess chosen by the Contemporary Club. The 1969 Watermelon festival continued with new ways to involve the community. The Chamber allowed the local school children to choose the slogan for the year’s festival. It also incorporated a youth talent competition and parade. In 1970, Collierville celebrated its Centennial and the festival was renamed, The Centennial Festival. Today’s Collierville Chamber of Commerce continues its dedication to the community and carries on the spirit of their first campaign, “I Love Collierville.”

Economic Development Update In keeping with the Town of Collierville’s business development strategy of access, a partnership with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has resulted in the creation of a new premier freight corridor with improvements and upgrades to U S Route 72 in Collierville. U S Route 72 (US 72) is an east-west United States highway that travels 337 miles from southwestern Tennessee, North Mississippi, North Alabama, and southeastern Tennessee. The highway’s western terminus is in Memphis and its eastern terminus is in Chattanooga. The $19.2 million TDOT road improvement project has elevated US 72 to a five lane divided highway from State Route 57 (Poplar Avenue) to just south of Shelby Drive at SR-385. Upgrades include new medians from Center Street to
Poplar Avenue, drainage and water improvements, a new bridge over railroad and decorative signal posts at Center Street and Poplar Avenue.
US 72 connects with SR-385 and I-269, creating a dynamic access point for business and industry needing fluid and uncongested connections to markets, clients, prospects and assets, such as rail, runway, river and roads. From the US 72 / SR-385 / I-269 intersection, the Norfolk Southern Rossville intermodal rail yard sits 8 miles away. The Memphis International Airport, home to FedEx and UPS, which offer access to the world, is located 30 miles west. The mighty Mississippi River with numerous inland ports, is a quick 45 minute journey. Additionally, I-78 is 13 miles, I-240 is 15 miles and I-40 is 18.5 miles from this access point.
With an abundance of developable land along US 72, zoned Restricted Industrial (R-I), General Industrial (G-I) and General Commercial (GC), this emerging premier freight corridor is ideal for logistics, distribution, manufacturing and fulfillment related organizations. At the end of the day, US 72 offers an efficient and uncongested route to opportunities, a huge differeniator in the time sensitive world of commerce. When you combine the incredible access that US 72 now provides, with access to the numerous high quality amenities of the Town of Collierville, this area is poised for strategic development.

Walking into D1, you can immediately feel your pulse thicken. Your first clue is the wall covered with athletic jerseys. This isn’t an ordinary fitness club. Making your way through the foyer and through the double doors, an expansive turf field rises up to greet you, filled with athletes of every age and fitness level, some as young as 7 years old. Classes for adults have participants flipping tractor tires or running through obstacles. Familiar faces from collegiate and professional sports work alongside Collierville neighbors. This is the kind of training normally reserved only for elite athletes, made available by visionaries: D1/Memphis co-owner, Michael Oher, and OrthoOne founders, Dr. Robert M. Pickering and Dr. Jeffrey A. Dlabach. Pairing exceptional sports medicine with the nation’s premier athletic training company earns our first spot in TourCollierville’s 2015 Celebration of the Entrepreneurial Spirit.

Co-owner Michael Oher is known for the best-selling novel that told the story of his football beginning, The Blind Side: The Evolution of a Game, by Michael Lewis. It was made into a major motion picture titled The Blind Side in 2009 starring Quinton Aaron, Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw. The film depicts Oher’s eventual adoption by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy of Memphis after he had drifted among homes. It earned 8 major motion picture awards including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Michael also authored a book in 2011, I Beat the Odds. Oher’s football career began at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, earning the USA Today and EA Sports All-American honors. While there he also lettered in track and basketball. When he graduated, Oher began at guard for the University of Mississippi and moved to left tackle as a sophomore. He started all four years, ending his career with the third best active consecutive starting streak among SEC players (37 games). He completed a degree in Criminal Justice in 2009.

The 309 lb, 6’4” Oher was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft, keeping the number 74 from his college days and earning a five-year, $13.8 million contract. He went on to play for the Tennessee Titans in 2014 for a $20 million contract. In December 2014, Oher sustained an injury and was placed on injured reserve. He became a free agent in February 2015. The Titans bio describes Michael as “a smart and physical lineman, who plays with good toughness and technique.” He started in all 91 games of his NFL career. His highlights and awards include a Super Bowl championship (XLVII), AFC champion (2012), unanimous AllAmerican (2008), First-Team All-SEC (2007, 2008), Jacobs Blocking Trophy and numerous others. Today Michael makes numerous guest appearances, many with a heart for children’s charities. In April 2014 he appeared at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to visit children battling cancer and have an autograph session. Towering above their heads, Michael autographed shirts, lifted up toddlers and squatted to greet young fans, lifting their spirits in what might have been an otherwise bleak day. “Knowing that they are battling cancer, it is something much worse than I go through every day,” Michael stated.
“Coming back here to where I grew up, to see the kids here at St. Jude, it’s just something I’ve always wanted to do.” He has also co-hosted the Goodwill Gridiron Halloween Party in Chesapeake, Maryland, held annually by the Baltimore Ravens. In 2010 he received the Sports Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City for his promotion of the importance of mentoring. Michael’s adoptive parents, Sean and Leigh Ann Tuohy, established the Making It Happen Foundation, to “improve the standard of living and quality of life for all the children fighting to survive in the invisible cracks of our society.” Michael is also co-owner of the nation’s 25th D1 Sports, an athletic training and therapy facility located in Collierville which opened in October 2014. OrthoOne assisted with the land selection and construction and is an investor and strategic partner in its operation. Positioned next to one another at 85 Market Center Drive, the two work as a pair to immediately address any sportsrelated injury or strain with physicians on site to examine athletes. D1 boasts an expansive indoor turf field and college-style weight room combined with a state-of-the-art sports therapy clinic geared toward athletes and athletic-type injuries. Their adult programs are suitable
for any gender and fitness level with results-driven programs geared towards weight loss, general health, strength and endurance. Programming for youth is age-specific (beginning at age 7) and includes the popular Quarterback Country, a rotating line-up of former collegiate and professional quarterbacks who travel the nation to teach. Rob Weatherly, Facility Coordinator, was formerly a strength coach with the St. Louis Cardinals. Members frequently workout alongside celebrity athletes who utilize the facility during their off-season. OrthoOne founding physicians, Dr. Robert M. Pickering and Dr. Jeffrey A. Dlabach set out in 2008 to provide fast, quality orthopedic care. Frustrated by the typical wait times patients were experiencing (sometimes as long as weeks), they set out on a path to develop efficient systems that would revolutionize clinic operations. “Pain doesn’t wait,” Dlabach stated, “neither should you. We created a model that enabled us to strive to see every patient within 24 hours and to always return phone calls within the business day.” They don’t just stop there. They also are committed to fast and efficient appointment times. “We begin appointments at 7:30am on weekdays to allow patients to be seen before work or school and schedule our last appointment for 3:30pm,” said OrthoOne CEO, Gail Lindberg. “We appreciate our patients’ need to get in and get out. That is what brings them back…
and their friends and family members, too. Our reputation is built on that.” OrthoOne provides Certified Athletic Trainers at all home football games of Collierville, Houston and Olive Branch High Schools. “We love our community and work to give back,” stated Dlabach. “15 years go I chose to raise my family here because of the genuine goodness all around. Being there with friends on the sidelines is just one of the things that we give to thank our neighbors for supporting our business.” The doctors at OrthoOne know their patients and often follow them throughout their lives, taking a personal interest in their accomplishments and struggles. “We have parents come directly from Pediatrics East next door when their child has an injury and they want to be seen right way.,” Lindberg said. “Coming

here is preferable over a visit to the ER and our process allows us the ability to accommodate them.” Board certified in surgery, Doctors Dlabach and Pickering take a thorough approach to patient care by responding to an injury or condition, performing surgery (if necessary), overseeing the physical therapy and healing processes, and pushing for complete recovery. “Since I’ve been in practice I’ve always taken an interest in athletes,” stated Dlabach. He played football while in college at Oklahoma State University and went on to earn his medical degree. He has been practicing in Memphis for over 13 years specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopy. “When I learned about the D1 business concept,” he said, “I knew that this
was perfectly aligned with the core values of OrthoOne and we wanted to be a part.” Runners in particular appreciate the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill in OrthoOne’s Physical Therapy clinic at the D1 facility. “It reduces your weight by as much as 80%,” Dlabach said, “so that you can recover from injuries such as stress fractures that would require you to reduce weight-bearing exercises.” Runners also appreciate the ability to study their physiology using on-board video in order to adjust their gait and improve their times and injury risk. The doctors recognized right away that the strong, wholesome work ethics of D1 were a mirror of their own. With motivational statements adorning the walls as a constant reminder to stay with
it, D1’s atmosphere is positively energized with great music and family-friendly enthusiasm - just like the OrthoOne clinic where “we don’t just say we care, we show we care.”

If you can identify movement dysfunction that will predispose you to stressing a particular region of the body, then altering the imbalances and removing the stress while correcting the injury will result in a greater overall recovery process for the patient and prevent re-injury. My best advice for a new entrepreneur would be to take care of the individual. While a successful business comes down to to creating enough income to meet your financial and personal goals, if you take care of your customer, the money will take care of itself. I think most start ups go through tough times in the beginning when the original capital starts to dry up and the incoming money doesn’t meet your needs. We were new in town and didn’t know many people, but we stuck to our principles of honesty and taking care of our patients. We experienced an influx of new patients who really appreciated the work we did and referred us to others. My wife Lindsey and I are driven people, and we realized that if we were going to be able to practice the way we wanted to practice, we would have to do it on our own. When you go to work for someone else, you do things their way and usually don’t earn the money that you feel you are worth. I have been fortunate to have many great mentors. I feel that my education at Palmer College of Chiropractic was excellent, and the staff doctors and teachers there invested heavily in our growth.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRITS KEVIN BAULTIER, CFP EDWARD JONES
14 YEARS | FINANCIAL ADVISING I aim to help you set & achieve your financial goals. My greatest differentiator is that I provide an objective point of view for my clients’ major financial decisions, as all of these revolve around the best use of their monies. My best advice for new entrepreneurs would be to seek to do well by others first and you will be well-rewarded. The financial crisis of 2008/2009 was a very difficult time for my business. To get through it, we stuck to the fundamentals of investing: diversification, quality investments, and most importantly, we emphasized the appropriate time horizon for the different investments. I started my own business because I wanted to work one-on-one with individual investors to help them reach their financial goals such as a comfortable retirements, putting a child through college and leaving a legacy. My mentors are my Grandfathers, Charles & Edward, my State Farm Agent, Jim Roberts, who passed before he could see me successful in this career, my good friend and first boss, Mike Driscoll, and my nowretired friend, Harald Melson. I have been very blessed with wonderful mentors, both professionally and personally. I learned very important things from each of them. Favorite Album as a Teenager: Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”

CRYE-LEIKE REALTORS
18 YEARS RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTAT AGENT Typically in a business, you have time to grow. However, I got my license in April 1997, quit my job in August, and started full time at Pyramid Realtors in September. My mom had a aneurysm in October and died in November. I decided in December to put all my energy into Real Estate. In January, I had 3 closings and made multi million dollar club that year. I never looked back. Seventeen years later, I have been Crye-Leike Collierville’s top producing agent for 14 years. My greatest differentiator is my Mini Cooper. I do all of my marketing with it. My advice for new entrepreneurs is twofold: from day one, you have to budget for marketing and you must be prepared to work long hours if you really want to be successful! The real estate market hit some hard times between 2009 and 2011. Because of my years of constant advertising, I was very lucky to make it through with little hardship, and I thank God for that! What truly motivated me to begin in real estate was my own realty situation. We had 2 house payments for 8 months (something I always warn my clients about before doing), and our home had been on the market with 2 agents and no offers. I decided to go to real estate school to sell our house myself. I did and had our home sold in six weeks.
Ann Scott was one of my major influencers. She was an agent at Pyramid Realtors, which is where I started my career as a realtor. She was tiny and feisty, but she knew her contracts and she took me under her wing. My biggest cheerleader happens to be Kenny. This March we celebrate 30 years of marriage. I could never had the quick growth in my business if I didn’t have Kenny in my corner cheering me on and playing both roles of parenting. He took the kids everywhere and went to all their games and meetings. I honestly believe that’s part of why we are such a close family. When both parents are entrepreneurs, the kids have to help each other as well as appreciate the time we are able to spend together. Favorite Album as a Teenager: Bad

SUPERIOR AUTO BODY INC.
27 YEARS AUTOBODY/COLLISION REPAIR SERVICES Superior Auto Body prides itself on serving our community with the best quality collision repair and customer service in our area. A differentiator for us is that we are truly a family business. We have five family members working in all areas of our company, from managers and service writers to technicians. It is a lot of family working in one company, but it works for us. My best advice for future entrepreneurs would be not to underestimate the age old value of hard work. We didn’t have anyone
to fall back on but ourselves, so we got by with plenty of hard work, determination, and a very strong belief in each other.
repair and service, so that the dealer would call us for future repairs. It worked 27 years ago and it works today.
We saw difficult times when we first started Superior. It was a one-man operation in a rented space. I handled all the repairs: bodywork, painting, detailing, estimating, and Joyce handled the paperwork at night. Our customer base began to dry up when we moved to the Collierville area, as many of them lived in Memphis. After about six weeks with hardly a car in our shop, Joyce took an extra job at nights to make ends meet. I went around car dealers and car rental offices, offering our services, making flyers up and hitting every parking lot in town to put tons of flyers on windshields. Eventually, one dealer called me back to have us do a very small repair for them. I knew I had to provide the absolute best
Even at an early age growing up in Scotland, I knew I wanted to have and operate my own business. At the age of 12, I had my own newspaper and milk delivery route. I loved getting up at 4am to make the milk deliveries and do my paper run. I have always been motivated to be in as much control as possible in providing for my family, and operating my own business has given me that opportunity. There have been many people in my life who have influenced me, so I believe that life itself has been my mentor/teacher, along with family both here in America and back in Scotland. I’m blessed to have them as my greatest support system. Favorite Album as a Teenager: The Clash March/April 2015
