The Architect’s position as chief collaborator seeks to bring together the community – our clients, construction, the public, government, finance, and ultimately the user of the space, to build in brick and steel lasting places of meaning. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) works to advance our nation’s quality of life and protect the public’s health, safety and welfare, as it has done for 160 years. Each day AIA members across the country and throughout the world create the places where people live and learn, work, and play. We design hospitals that heal us and houses of worship that sustain us. We create next generation energy-saving buildings to make our communities healthier and safer. All the while, architects work with clients and allied design professionals and construction partners to improve the built environment in a $1 trillion sector that accounts for almost 6 percent of the economy. Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
AIA, as part of the global community, champions a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion within the profession. Achieving this vision has a direct impact on the relevance of our profession and the world’s prosperity, health, & future.
Human activity is warming our climate to dangerous levels, and carbon is the primary culprit. Buildings contribute about 40% of that carbon. The harm that results affects us all but doesn’t impact us all equally. As authors of that environment, architects are crucial to addressing and mitigating the damage. AIA, the largest design organization in the world, is asking architects, design professionals, civic leaders, and the public in every community to join our efforts. Help us transform the dayto-day practice of architecture to achieve a zero-carbon, resilient, healthy, just, and equitable built environment.
Climate Action
In the US alone, nearly 40% of greenhouse gases can be attributed to carbon produced by buildings. As a profession, we have the responsibility to prioritize and support effective actions to exponentially decelerate the production of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.
Sustainability
AIA has a long history promoting sustainability in architecture. From the publication of Environmental Design: Research & Practice in 1971 to the creation of the Committee on the Environment, COTE, in 1990 and connections to the Historic Resources Committee established in 1857, the Institute is a leader in sustainable design.

How Architects Can Improve America’s Infrastructure This is a pivotal moment for our nation’s infrastructure, and one group of experts can help us rebuild to succeed: Architects.
Infrastructure is the foundation of our society, and it’s both crumbling and contributing to global warming.
In the wake of the election, updating the infrastructure of the United States is vital for the country—and the world. The global built environment accounts for about 40% of annual fossil-fuel carbon-dioxide emissions (CO₂). Simultaneously, the American economy and infrastructure (schools, civic buildings, hospitals) need to be rebuilt.
Yet there is a solution: Architects.

Recently, architects Julie Hiromoto, AIA, and Carl Elefante, FAIA, testified before Congress about how the United States needs to reduce building energy consumption. This includes retrofitting 54 billion square feet of existing commercial and institutional building stock.

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE High school graduates seeking to become an architect should pursue a degree at an accredited school. At the University of Memphis Department of Architecture, the professional “4+2” degree sequence is comprised of:

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture (4 year pre-professional degree) and Master of Architecture (2 year professional degree; NAAB accredited)
The University also offers:

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture (4 year professional degree; accredited by the Council for Interior Design)
The Department of Architecture is known for its community engagement activities, emphasis on the various elements of city building, and focus on sustainability. In addition to its academic programs, the Department is home to the Center for Sustainable Design and is a partner (with the Department of City + Regional Planning) in the University of Memphis Design Collaborative. Path to Licensure Earning an architectural license is required to call yourself an architect. In Tennessee, license applicants must:

Complete a degree in architecture or an architecture-related field approved by the Board Obtain three (3) to seven (7) years of architectural experience satisfactory to the Board (the duration depending on the type of degree obtained), Complete the Architectural Experience Program (AXP)/Intern Development Program (IDP) administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), and Pass the Architect Registration Examination, (ARE®), administered by NCARB.
