Welcome to WEC
A
s we approach the end of another memorable year and step into 2024, it's a poignant reminder to embrace our passions, strive for excellence and maintain a strong sense of community. We extend our gratitude to our exhibitors, guests, sponsors, retailers and visitors for their tremendous support, and we look forward to sharing new enhancements to help evolve the equestrian lifestyle. As we dive into the final edition of 2023, we hope the stories reflect the unwavering dedication and fervor that characterizes our community and the spirit of equestrian sport. Our cover story highlights Foxridge Farms, located in Columbus, Ohio, and Ocala, Florida. Since 2016, owner Kathy Dixon has entrusted professional Canadian show jumping athlete Sean Jobin in guiding a string of high-caliber horses to success. Behind the scenes at Foxridge Farms, Jobin emphasizes athletic innovation and collaborates closely with sports scientist Dr. Tim Worden to optimize success both in and out of the ring. Our Junior Rider Focus showcases Elaina Davis, the victorious rider of the 2022 WEC Medal Final at World Equestrian Center – Wilmington. Davis shares her major triumph and deep connection with her 14-year-old Oldenburg x Hanoverian mare, Zuri, that helped aid in her victory. She also reveals her aspirations, dreams within the sport and looks forward to the next chapters in her riding career. We spent 24 Hours with Peter Petschenig, an international show jumping trainer and athlete from Austria. Petschenig is self-taught and selfmade. He began his career on the neighbor’s naughty pony and worked his way through the levels at show barns riding any horse that he could. When he made the leap to the United States, he settled in California and met his wife, Nathalie. Together, they now run a successful boarding and training business in Collinsville, Texas, and travel the country competing, with World Equestrian Center – Ocala as a primary destination. The elegant menu included Ile Flottante for dessert, a French delight featuring hazelnut praline, crème anglaise and candied orange.
n early August, the team at World Equestrian Center – Ocala held an invitation-only, exclusive event celebrating the iconic Louis XIII cognac. The elegant evening unfolded in the Paris Room at The Equestrian Hotel, where a select gathering enjoyed a decadent, four-course dinner featuring dishes like oysters and caviar, king crab and Maine lobster, and Japanese wagyu, prepared by WEC Director of Culinary, Ryker Brown, and fully paired with premium wines by Master Sommelier, Roland Micu. Guided by a dedicated Louis XIII Ambassador, the experience delved into the legacy and rituals of Louis XIII and the Cognac region. The evening concluded with a private tasting of Louis XIII cognac and each couple in attendance received a custom-engraved decanter of their own. As a rare opportunity to savor and acquire one of the world’s most coveted cognacs, the event speaks to the exceptional range and quality available for guests at World Equestrian Center.

xposure to top equestrian athletes at an early age stoked Sean Jobin’s passion for horses and fueled his interest in the sport. “I started riding when I was really young! My mom was a groom for some Canadian riders, so she got me into it. She did three-day eventing, but I always liked the show jumping aspect of it the most, so that became my focus.” With the support of his dedicated Foxridge Farms team, including trainers Emily Rickert and Heather Jarvis, Canadian show jumping athlete Sean Jobin has forged a path to recognition on an international level. Jobin has incorporated technology into his program, integrating it to the point of an enhanced understanding of his equine athlete partners and combining that with his

Growing up with family ties to the industry, Jobin’s love for horses and passion for his riding career began at a young age and took him all the way to the top of what the sport has to offer. In 2014, Jobin moved from his home base of Toronto, Canada, to the United States looking to build on his skills and blossom within the industry. Jobin’s trainer Hugh Graham made a connection in the United States to Foxridge Farms and owner Kathy Dixon, paved the way for his professional career. “When the opportunity to ride for Foxridge Farms arose I moved from the Toronto area to Ocala in 2014 to establish my business here in

Together, Dr. Tim Worden and Jobin align athletic human performance and athletic equine performance to form the most productive approach for success in and out of the ring. “We have been heavily involved in sports science and analytics since 2016. A good friend of mine, Tim Worden, has his doctorate in sports science. Together we’ve created a custom program based on different data tones in Canadian track and field that were developed in the 80s and 90s. We have branched and expanded it in the past few years to develop more wearable technology. We started off with heart rate monitors and respiratory monitors, and we have moved into more biomechanical monitors. A lot of it is just to give us more feedback about our training program. Overall, our aim is to better understand the horses needs as an athlete and support their welfare.” The commitment to technology that underscores Jobin’s program has yielded several

successes during the 2022-2023 competition season. Jobin brought his talented group of horses to WEC – Wilmington for the 2022 Fall Classic Series and Midwest Indoors II to kick-start their 2023 winter season and earned numerous podium placings before traveling south to finish the season at WEC – Ocala. After jumping to top three finishes in several notable grands prix at World Equestrian Center – Ocala, including third place in the $150,000 Lugano Diamonds Grand Prix CSI3*, Jobin ended his winter on a personal high, riding as the reserve athlete for Canada’s Nation’s Cup™ team in San Juan Capistrano, California. Ultimately, Jobin finished seventh aboard one of his top mounts, Darius (Warrant x Sanita), in the CSIO5* 1.60m Longines Grand Prix. He continued his hot streak with a win in the $150,000 IDA Development Grand Prix CSI3* aboard Coquelicot VH Heuvelland Z (Catoki x Cybelle V’T Heuvelland Z) during the 2023 Ocala Summer Series. A staff including professional riders Heather Jarvis and Emily Rickert help to maintain the training operation in Columbus year-round, with a focus on sales and select riders for training. “Once we got a big string of horses going in our program, we started splitting our time between Ocala, Columbus and all the different five-star tours. Right now, we are focusing on developing our really great string, and we are really excited about them. We have horses that exceeded our expectations, and we have a great opportunity right now to focus on the sport. We had the opportunity to do the Major League Show Jumping tour this year and jumped some of the five-star Grands Prix as well. We do some sales and some training as well, but right now we are prioritizing the sport.”

We loved how flashy he was, and we loved the way that he was brought up. My groom actually sourced him for me. He has been developing so nicely and he has been a really solid contributor. He loves jumping and he is just incredibly smart. He loves the footing at WEC, and he is comfortable and happy in the Grand Arena. He had a great week in three-star last year at WEC – Ocala with two podium finishes and clear rounds in all of the ranking classes. Darius is

He was third in the five-star Grand Prix in Thermal, California, in December and he finished seventh in the Nation’s Cup™ in San Juan Capistrano.” Not only have the Foxridge Farms horses have all grown and progressed at WEC, but Jobin himself has found great value in what the facilities have to offer for the horses and the sport. “Aside from being able to do the grands prix and being able to get awesome experience in the international classes, there is an unmatched atmosphere and energy at WEC, which is great for us because we are always trying to generate

more interest in what we do. There are also a lot of opportunities for the rest of the horses to develop. It gives horses like one of my others, Sterrehof’s Eddinus (Padinus x Idylle), more of a chance. When he doesn’t do the grand prix, he can do the $15,000 1.45m Jumper Class. There are a lot of different classes, and the footing is fantastic. You can push your horses a little bit here. Your horses can jump higher and go quicker here because they are comfortable. The visibility that WEC has given to the sport has been huge. The opportunity to ride against top competition and have these FEI classes has been phenomenal for me. It gives me the chance to climb world rankings which is important for us riders.”

24 Hours in the Life of Peter Petschenig
etschenig wasn’t born into an equestrian family, he found a love for the sport on his own, “I started riding when I was eight years old. My parents didn’t have anything to do with horses, but our neighbors did. I went over there and started mucking stalls and doing any chore that they needed done so I could ride their pony.” “Eventually, my dad traded a car for a horse to lease. That guy totaled the car and we had to give the horse back. Later down the road, my dad bought a horse for me and a little Haflinger for my mom and sister.” As soon as Petschenig had a horse of his own, he began competing. At the age of 19, after the Army, Petschenig went to Holland to work for a sales barn to expand his knowledge of training and riding. From there, he went on to work at a sale and show barn in Switzerland and eventually decided to move to America. Since 2013, Petschenig has racked up a list of accomplishments, winning grands prix across the United States and earning podium finishes in several international classes.

i learned the most when i came to the states; how to present horses, how to get them ready, how to present myself and how to work horses in an effective way to make them better.”
“Most of everything I know is selflearned or self-taught. I learned the most when I came to the States; how to present horses, how to get them ready, how to present myself and how to work horses in an effective way to make them better. It’s a learning process and I still learn something new every day,” said Petschenig. Petschenig came to the states with just two horses, “I had one young horse and one old horse. I was based out of Chino Hills, California, and I slowly got one client after another. Then I met Nathalie, she had a barn in Orange County and her grandmother used to own the Oaks. We sold everything and tried to find the fastest growing city, which was Dallas, so we bought something close by there.” Recently, the couple and their two children purchased 238 acres of land and built a stunning stable and house from the ground up in Collinsville, Texas. The stable boasts 41 stalls, a 200 x 300 indoor riding arena and much more.
Although, the Petschenigs’ have a beautiful home base, they now call Ocala their second home. “In the last two years I spent six months out of the year at World Equestrian Center – Ocala (WEC). The facility itself, I don’t think anything comparable exists.” “There are two different sides to WEC for us as trainers; one – how easy it is for us to work out of and two – how versatile it is from a showing perspective. There are beautiful arenas; the WEC Grand Arena, the Stadium, the hunter rings and amateur jumper rings - every single arena has the same footing, which you can hardly find anywhere. The jump equipment is pristine. The stalls are outstanding. We actually used the stalls and wash stalls as a template for our farm back in Texas, we like them that much!” “WEC makes our jobs even easier. Not to mention our clients love it. They love the restaurants, the hotel and shopping. Most of them stay in the hotel and go to the pool. My family and I stay at the RV park, it’s clean and safe, has a laundromat and general store, even a gas station. My kids favorite show is WEC because of all the fun things to do, not to mention they love to show in lead-line on Saturday nights. I don’t know what more we could ask for,” laughed Petschenig. “We are very fortunate to be able to show here. There aren’t enough words to describe it, but incomparable is a start.”

Break Time
Usually, we wake up at 5am. We have coffee in the camper and get ready for the day. Classes at WEC can start as early as 7am, so we try to get to the barn at least 45 minutes early. We organize the day and get going as soon as the first ring starts.
We try to finish up around 5pm or 6pm depending on the day. That gives us some time to go back to the camper to get something to eat and sit down for a minute. On Saturdays, I’ll head right back to the barn and try to get the grand prix horses ridden for 30 to 45 minutes before the course walk. I’ll do some poles and small jump exercises to get their focus.
Wednesdays are the busiest. We show all the client horses and our own which could be anywhere from seven to 25 horses, depending on the number that we have that week. On Thursdays or Fridays, our clients fly in from Texas. So, the weekend it’s a lot of client focused training and running from ring to ring.

Saturday Night Grand Prix After I am done with the horses and getting them ready for the grand prix, it’s time for the course walk at 5:45pm. First horse is on course at 7pm. The feeling you get showing on a Saturday night is unmatched. The atmosphere in the WEC Grand Arena is super. When you walk down the ramp, it almost gives you a gladiator feeling. Every Saturday night, the crowd cheers for everyone, doesn’t matter who it is, how well they do or where they come from, it’s fantastic. The horses love it and every Saturday feels like a special occasion. It makes not only the riders feel proud, but the horses too.

I started riding ten years ago. I started out doing eventing, and when I moved to Honey Tree Stables with Sarah Oelerich, I had to start all over again. I just did flat work for about a year or two before I started jumping again. What division do you show in?
ED
I show in the Children’s Hunters, the Children’s Equitation and the National Hunter Derbies.
WEC
What is your favorite riding accomplishment?
ED
My most special riding accomplishment was winning the WEC Medal Final at Midwest Indoors II in 2022! It was my first big win and I was so thrilled.

When did you begin riding?
What horse do you ride now?
ED
My horse’s name is “Zuri” also known as “No Worries.” She is a 14-year-old Oldenburg x Hanoverian mare. She is a homebred from my trainer’s farm. Her sire still lives at the farm and he is where Zuri got her color from. I love her so much. She is so willing to do anything, there is a reason that her name is No Worries! Once she gets to know you, she will do anything for you and she is in it to win it.
WEC
Tell us about your win in the WEC Medal Final.
ED
There were some really incredible riders in the class. I scratched the derby that day and just kept her in the final. I was nervous going into it because my warmup trips earlier in the day were not my best, but that course was so fun and we do a lot of courses like that at home, so it came very naturally. Zuri and I both really got focused for the class, but I actually didn’t think that I was going to place, and then when they announced the results, I immediately started to cry happy tears!

What grade are you in? I am going to be in 11th grade. What is your favorite subject in school? I love History. I enjoy the storytelling aspect of it, it keeps me focused. How do you balance school and riding? I am home-schooled, so it gives me plenty of time to focus on the horses! I got accepted into the Equine Management program and Laurel Oaks, so that is an option that I have had open for a while now. I love home-schooling, but now that I am approaching my junior year, I am starting to turn my focus to how I want horses to evolve in my future.

What is your main long-term riding goal?
ED
I have many goals that I would love to accomplish, but I would really love to start doing the jumpers more. Ideally, I want to keep Zuri in the hunters, and hopefully, continue with another horse to do the jumpers and equitation. Maybe I will go to Maclay Finals one day.
WEC
Who have been your biggest inspirations in the sport?
ED
Definitely my trainer Sarah Oelerich. Laurie Storey, because she has given me a lot of advice, and Molly Kindness, who used to work with my trainer.
WEC
How has WEC – Wilmington influenced your junior career?
ED
It has opened me up to the competitive side of the sport and it has been great to evolve here. The facility is awesome. It has everything that you could ever ask for and everyone is so friendly. The Roberts Family is incredible. WEC has definitely made me the person that I am today! I love it here, truly everything about it, especially Starbucks.

W
orld Equestrian Center – Ocala's (WEC) emergence on the Marion County landscape has made Ocala, Florida, an international destination. In addition to being North America’s largest equestrian sport facility, it was purpose-built with safety in mind. This approach makes exhibitors comfortable their horses and team are in a wellmaintained environment. The presence of security cameras has played an important role, ensuring horses remain safe and retailers can be confident their storefronts are secure throughout the day. “If a horse gets out, we can find out where the horse came from, so they can get back in their stalls, which we have done a couple of times,” said Christy Baxter, WEC Director of Equestrian Operations. “It’s a huge element, to be able to have that perk here on-site for the sheer safety of the horses, the exhibitors and the retailers.” The technology and security infrastructure has been a top priority and round-the-clock surveillance, with an on-site security presence, allows everyone to be far more self-possessed, knowing preventative measures are already in place. “The security system is really designed for the security and safety for everyone on the venue,” said Baxter. “They’ve done a great job putting cameras everywhere around the property. The security operations center is constantly monitoring all those cameras, so they do a great job.” However, security is only one of the components to day-to-day operations at WEC. The equestrian barns provide ample space for safely managing and working around horses, with 12x14 box stalls fitted with Amberway Equine’s Stable Comfort, dedicated wash racks and 12-foot-wide aisles. What’s more, having stall mats already in place allows exhibitors to concentrate on their performance within the show ring, knowing

there during the hot summer days,” said Baxter. "There are also permanent tack rooms for everyone to securely put their tack into. It’s really convenient and provides safety for the horses and exhibitors.” Additionally, the aisle ways in each barn feature IDA Development’s Equitan S Rubber Flooring system, meaning the flooring within the barn is sealed rubber. “All our Equitan products are laid one-inch thick,” said Harry Knopp, IDA Development owner. “We have a twocomponent sealed top coat designed to fill in the pores of the rubber surface while still maintaining the anti-slip properties.” The sealed system is a seamless cushioned flooring that’s easy to clean, stops bacterial growth and provides

they won’t be responsible for providing their own. Each barn also boasts a fire suppression system, concrete walls that can withstand hurricane-force winds, and superior ventilation, in part because of individual Big Ass Fans® in each stall. “Those Big Ass Fans® really do a great job circulating that air and keeping it fairly cool in
excellent shock absorption and protection for the horse’s suspensory apparatus, joints and hooves. “The reason that we do a two-component sealer process is that we want to preclude the urine, fecal matter, sand and dirt from getting into the granular system of the rubber. This is important when you’re in that type of environment,” said Knopp. “The Equitan S system is the one that’s being used inside the barn aisle ways and also in the wash bays.” Having a safe layer to reduce the possibility of an untoward incident when horses are bathed also went into the planning of the facility. “When you’re in the wash bay, shampooing or bathing the horse, the Equitan S system prevents a

slippery surface,” said Knopp. “It makes things more sure-footed when the horses are having a bath. The system outside, used in between the arenas and as walkways, is called the Equitan W system. It’s a permeable system, which means that water drains through it. The rubber is a virgin rubber, so it doesn’t break down easily and it’s UV protected. This surface is also seamless, one-inch-thick rubber, that provides cushion and anti-slip properties.” The University of Florida Veterinary Hospital onsite at World Equestrian Center is a 40,000-squarefoot facility and provides contemporary care with leading-edge technology. The dedicated staff not only treat the elite equine athletes that compete at the facility, they also provide service to companion animals and those from the surrounding community. There is also a quarantine barn on-site. The world-class veterinary hospital offers a number of therapeutic modalities and advanced diagnostics, including Calibra CT, Hallmark MRI and Long Mile scanner technology.
There are a variety of places at World Equestrian Center where the horse will be able to keep their mind fresh, where they can be hacked and hand-walked, plus, there are ample bridle paths and paddocks on the grounds."

Making Sure the Horse Comes First
“Our veterinary clinic, run by the University of Florida, offers an array of services,” said Baxter. “Therapeutic services such as a Thera-Plate treatment stall, an aquasizer (underwater treadmill) and salt spa, along with a salt room stall are some of the services. They also offer sport horse evaluations on-site. UF will also be managing the urgent care facility that’s being built and is scheduled to open in the spring of 2024. It encompasses the human and the horse on both fronts.” There are a variety of places at World Equestrian Center where the horse will be able to keep their mind fresh, where they can be hacked and handwalked, plus, there are ample bridle paths and paddocks on the grounds. “We have more than 100 turnout paddocks. The exhibitors can rent the paddocks during shows,” said Baxter. “Most Mondays are the horses’ days off and the paddocks are usually filled. It’s their time to take a break and be a horse.”

Equal attention has been given to the venue’s competition spaces. German-Geo Textile (GGT) footing is in place in 18 of the facility’s show rings, including all World Equestrian Center outdoor arenas and four of the five indoor arenas, as Arena 5 uses dirt footing.
“The synthetic fiber mix is the top footing, everyone prefers it, and our tractor and water truck team maintains the footing 24 hours a day,” said Baxter. “It’s great footing, and again, it goes back to the safety of the horses.”

not every day that toy shops share in writing a chapter of American – or horse racing – history. But it’s not every day that history meets Cheryl White. Just in time for the holidays at Mr. Pickles and Sailor Bear Toy Shoppe, and nationwide, the “Cheryl White/Rider, Horse and Book Set” by Breyer® introduces horse lovers young and old to America’s first Black female jockey, her chestnut Thoroughbred, Jetolara, and “The Jockey and Her Horse,” the fictional novel, by Sarah Maslin Nir and Raymond White, Jr., inspired by the true story of how a 17-year-old teenager named Cheryl White became the first Black female jockey in America. The fully poseable figure also marks the first time Breyer has created a figure depicting a reallife equestrienne’s face and – just as importantly – her hairstyle.
The Breyer® Story
The gift set celebrates how Cheryl broke barriers, including on September 2, 1971, at Waterford Park in West Virginia, when the teenager galloped into history as the first Black female jockey ever to win a race, on Jetolara, a horse bred by her mother and trained by her father. She kept riding into winner’s circles more than 750 times over the course of her career and before her passing at age 65 in 2019.

A good rider and a good student, Cheryl appeared on the TV student quiz show, “It’s Academic,” joined her high school yearbook staff and the Spanish, science and pep clubs, ran track and captained her Grand Valley High School basketball team, and (if being a jockey didn’t work out) planned on becoming a math teacher. The Breyer gift set describes Cheryl as a pioneer and torchbearer in the long legacy of Black contributions to Thoroughbred racing (a sport built on the labor of enslaved people). It is a story that the authors of “The Jockey and Her Horse” – Cheryl’s brother, Raymond Jr., and New York Times reporter and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, Sarah Maslin Nir – have been very proud to tell.
The Write Stuff
Sarah is a reporter for The New York Times and author of “The Flying Horse,” the first book in her Once Upon a Horse series published by Cameron Kids. Second only to her love of horses (since the age of two) is her love of horse books. She has also written the adult memoir, “Horse Crazy: The Story of a Woman and a World in Love with an Animal. The Jockey & Her Horse,” her second novel for young readers. “As a New York Times writer, I uncover hidden histories,” Sarah says about discovering Cheryl’s story just as her historic racing win was set to mark its 50th anniversary. Cheryl, she said, may not have been invited to join the equity conversation then, but now, the toy company’s release of the first

real-life black equestrian in its catalog history has demonstrated a “stepping up” to a more thorough recounting of racing history. “Kids,” Sarah hopes, “will see themselves in this figure.” Like his beloved sister, Raymond Jr. is from a family of racehorse professionals and has held nearly every job – jockeys’ agent, exercise rider, assistant trainer, groom – except one. He grew too tall to be a jockey like Cheryl. “The Jockey & Her Horse” is his first book and he has dedicated it, “To my father, my idol and role model; my mother, my biggest cheerleader; and to my sister, Cheryl, the legend.” Writer and rider met during the Cheryl C. White Memorial Stake, held each October at Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course in Ohio, where the Cleveland native is still faithfully remembered.
We started with a bald-headed doll’s face,” he chuckles. “If it wasn’t right, from the nose to the hair, I didn’t approve it." The stakes race, like the gift set, is meant to inspire and introduce horses, horse racing and riding to all children.
She Looks Like Me
Nothing was more important to Raymond Jr., as a brother or as a horseman, than to assure this Breyer figure was true to Cheryl’s image, down to the last detail. “We started with a bald-headed doll’s face,” he chuckles. “If it wasn’t right, from the nose to the hair, I didn’t approve it. But it was a collaborative effort.

I’d share [a working model] with our family and friends, and get their input, too.” One detail that had to be correct was the Black jockey’s hair. “She always had her hair in a ponytail or puffballs under her helmet,” he says. “Breyer made it perfect.” Perfect for the family legacy and for fresh generations of young Black riders who see
themselves in her depiction. Riders like Nanabema Sarfo. Standing a jockey-qualifying 4’10” tall, the 20-year-old California hunter/jumper rider uses social media (@nnanasfo/TikTok, @nana.sfo/IG) to voice the need for better Black representation in the horse world. “Black representation needs to happen and Black riders need to feel accepted in this sport in order to create a more diverse and fair playing field,” says Nana.

This will change lives. It changed mine.” “That’s why I’m so happy with Sarah’s book and why this Breyer® is so important. This will change lives. It changed mine.” A change that began with a DM to the digital creator on her Instagram account with an exceptional question: Would she like to receive a Cheryl White Breyer® gift set? “I don’t think Breyer expected me to post about it but when I received it, I thought this was so amazing that I did a TikTok video and Instagram post! I didn’t even know I was the first one to receive the set until after the fact!” One fact Nana does want to share is how – out of approximately 43,000 USHJA members – only

79 are black: “I’m proud to be one of the 79 and will continue to use my platform to inspire others and advocate diversity in this sport. I’m guessing Breyer found me because of my social media presence in the horse world. I started taking social media seriously about a year ago, to get my voice out there, because as a Black equestrian, I haven’t always felt welcomed, appreciated or understood in this sport. There had to be others like me.” Like Cheryl, Nana found her stride in her teens. “When I was 16, I started connecting with Black equestrians from all over the world and they gave me a community and sense of being. To be represented was something I desperately wanted as a child. “I can’t begin to emphasize the importance of Black equestrians being represented in brands and toys like Breyer. Our history needs to be told. Equestrians don’t know Cheryl White existed. The more we pressure brands to offer representation, the better off the horse world will be. This doll is an
incredible start and glimpse into the future for our horse world. “As a child, if I had seen a Breyer that looked like me and found books about people that looked like me… that would have made such a difference. I would have believed I could do anything,” this 21st century, Black female rider says. “It’s important for young Black riders to know that skin color doesn’t define your ability to succeed.” Cheryl and her family would surely agree.

amily dinner around the kitchen table was a symbol of love and happiness for Alex Lynch during her childhood. Ending the day with a full plate surrounded by her loved ones was only the beginning of her passion for cooking. “My grandpa was originally the one that taught me how to cook, and he knew how to make really good food. Food in my family was all about making everyone happy and the dinner table was where we congregated at the end of the day. That was the time to really enjoy something that was done with love.” Her admiration for food grew with her when she began crafting recipes and making homemade dishes in her very first job. Aside from the experience of eating tasty food, Alex was always

compelled by the science behind cooking. “I love the art and science behind food. There is always a reason why flavors blend well together. I love to make dishes look like a piece of art. It has become very apparent to me over the years that if people think that it doesn’t look good, it probably doesn’t taste good!” In her hometown of Groveport, Ohio, Alex was placed into her very first food and beverage job at a local family-owned pizzeria. She quickly became accustomed to what it takes to be a chef, and the simple pleasures that come with cooking and
serving people. It was with great certainty that her familial experience with food paved the way for her career as chef. “I had my first food and beverage job in my hometown of Groveport, Ohio, at our family friend’s local business. It was a small pizzeria and we homemade all the dough, pasta, meat mixes and sauces. So, I learned a lot there and it paved the way for me. I left food and beverage for a bit and went into hotel hospitality. I ended up getting a job as a kitchen opener when I moved to Columbus. I got married and my husband lived in Fayetteville,

Alex’s Homemade Tomato Jam: You take heirloom cherry tomatoes and halve them. Put all of them in a big stockpot and add sugar, salt, pepper, ground ginger, cinnamon and white wine vinegar. Bring this to a boil and then let simmer for up to eight hours or more, depending on how juicy the tomatoes are. Most of the liquid will be gone and you will have a thick and chunky jam. I like to blend it smoothly for spreading. It’s better than fancy ketchup. I mainly created this for the sandwich, but I wanted to do something slightly different from just a normal condiment. the creator of the delectable Tomato Jam that tops the popular Fried BLT, as well as one of the most popular items on The Paddock Club menu, the Eggplant Napolean, she strives to make every item on the menu, the best item on the menu. “We have changed some items on the menu in the Paddock Club. We like to always try something new! We have a few things that are always heavy hitters like the pot-roast, the steak and salmon. Pasta will never die, especially with this crowd of athletes that like to carb load! I always make sure that there is an option for everyone, and we try to cater to vegetarians as well. I want our menu to be where everything's a heavy hitter. So, when I do the menu, I think about past menus that have gone well and what items that I can retry. I don’t want to have dishes to make up for other dishes. I want everything to be top tier.” In her efforts to make the largest indoor horse show in the country feel like home, Alex strives to recreate her own happiness
around the kitchen table for all WEC exhibitors. When asked about her favorite part of her current role at WEC, Alex says she is inspired by all the different cultures that one common interest has brought to Wilmington. “The Paddock Club is so special because of all the different cultures. It is World Equestrian Center for a reason! We have had people from Canada, France and Germany. I have met people from the Czech Republic and from Russia. I just love the people here. L
isten to your heart and paint with purpose. It was while he was attending college in Minnesota, artist Mark Barone would make a fateful decision and it was the advice of a university professor that would play a role in shaping his life. Barone was getting a degree in design instead of art because he had no desire to take a foreign language. He went through the design program, but all of his courses were in art, painting and drawing. “I remember talking to one of the design professors and he said, ‘You know, you need to get an M.F.A., if that’s where your heart lies because it’s the smartest thing you can do.’ And then he said, ‘A Masters in design isn’t going to do anything for you, but an M.F.A., that’s a terminal degree, you can teach college and do whatever you want with it.’” The son of an architect, Barone didn’t wish to follow in his father’s footsteps. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, the Chicagoan began to have some direction with his work, but was living in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and wanted to go somewhere warmer. He would move to New Mexico and enroll in art classes at the University of New Mexico. It was there he met a number of outstanding artists, including Morton Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Diebenkorn, Paul Wonner and Theophilus Brown. Wonner was from the Bay Area Figurative Painters. Barone would walk by Wonner’s studio, who was a visiting artist, and watch him paint. He liked what he saw and the painter decided to invite him in, asking to see some of his work, and was impressed, but didn’t believe he was going to get into the learning institution’s program. “After two years of applying to the school there (University of New Mexico), I got rejected, and I said, what am I going to do?’” said Barone.

He had planned a trip to Europe with the intent of having it be part of his art history for graduate school, but because he didn’t get into the program at the University of New Mexico, he didn’t want to go. However, the vagaries of life would find him changing his mind and he would make the trip across the pond, which proved to be propitious for many reasons. “I went over there (to Europe) to a lot of different countries, looked at a lot of different artwork; stuff that I had studied for a long time,” said Barone. “It reinvigorated me to keep painting because I was at a crossroads where I was saying, ‘What am I doing?’” Barone’s uncle taught at Wiespaden on one of the military bases, so he was able to use his space as a home base. He also had the opportunity to go to Rome, Paris, Amsterdam and a number of places in Europe where there was great art, seeing the things he wanted to see. “I started collecting all of these paints and brushes because they were having all of these sales there and shipping them home through the military mail,” said Barone. “So, I said, ‘When I get back, I was going to take six months to get a body of work together and give graduate school one last try.’” The artist found himself applying to 10 different schools, with seven of them accepting him and giving him a full-ride scholarship to attend their learning institution. It was at graduate school when his art career began to ascend. “I went to Southern Illinois University, I just loved that school and the department that they had, the professors there welcomed me with open arms, loved my work,” said Barone, who enjoyed being around other artists who were serious about their work. The oil painter found himself having to take 12 credits of art history, but he would soon begin applying his skills in another way.

Painting with Purpose
“’We’re not paying you to come here to do art history, you need to be doing studio painting, that’s why we got you here,’ said one professor to the aspiring artist,” said Barone. “I did 12 credits of independent study with him and all I did was go over there and talk for three years…he said, ‘get in your studio and paint.’” Barone got a body of work together, changing his thesis show, and he and a sculptor in the adjacent studio had their show together. Unlike most aspiring artists at the time, they decided to send out color
The artist also has a background in revitalizing cities by using the arts. His approach has helped to transform neighborhoods once regarded as urban blight, into flourishing areas attracting artists and businesses to places many regarded as unlivable. It was through his efforts in the City of Paducah that artists took ownership of historical homes that once composed a blighted area, transforming neighborhoods into a thriving community. He was able to accomplish this through steadfast determination and the support of the municipality’s
American Planning Association Award and the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence. However, one project Barone has become associated with and celebrated for is “Act of Dog,” an undertaking spearheaded by his wife, Marina Dervan. The couple, who’ve been married for 15 years, realized happiness comes from serving others. The passing of Barone’s dog, Santina, who had lived to the age of 21, had not only bonded emotionally to Mark, but also to Marina, who was a cat person.
cards instead of the perfunctory black and white cards, which was the traditional route. While he was at Southern Illinois University, he made the decision that all he wanted to do was paint. The two artists then sent their cards to every gallery and museum listed in “Art in America’s” gallery and museum guide, knowing that some of them were going to pick them up and start showing their work. It served as Barone’s launching pad. “I couldn’t have stayed in Green Bay and I certainly couldn’t have taken over my father’s business (who was an architect), it would’ve been mindless work,” said Barone. “I would’ve been just doing stuff for the dollar…there’s not much creativity in it.”
mayor, putting together a strong incentive package to attract other artists and reaching out to art publications that knew him through his work, by placing advertisements. The artists who moved in now had a vested interest as owners of the homes and played a huge role in helping those affected areas change into prosperous districts, restoring a footprint that had seemingly been lost to time. For his efforts, Barone was recognized with a number of prestigious awards, including the
After the couple had moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, as part of the healing process, Marina suggested Mark go over to the dog park across the street from their home. Although Mark wasn’t at the stage to adopt a new family member, Marina began searching the internet, and what she would come across would be staggering statistics. "I was in shock, it was really shocking to me,” said Dervan. “I imagined shelter equaled safety and adoption, and of course, that’s not the case…it was

I went over there (to Europe) to a lot of different countries, looked at a lot of different artwork; stuff that I had studied for a long time,” said Barone. “It reinvigorated me to keep painting because I was at a crossroads where I was saying, ‘What am I doing?, " ®

a really haunting number. In that moment, I was in the kitchen, and of course, I was crying because I realized people were dropping off their animals for a whole range of reasons.” It was through Dervan’s persistence of sending Barone pictures of the shelter animals that he had a vision of the Vietnam War Memorial and the

Holocaust Museum. After initially not wanting to see the images, he came up with an inspirational idea that fueled the project that would resonate with a global audience. They had a conversation about the possibility of painting the dogs that perish each day in shelters nationwide, around 5,500 animals. Dervan had reached out to all of the major organizations to come up with those figures, of how that visual’s impression would be imprinted in the public’s awareness and consciousness, as well as how it would make a difference. Barone has always been a representational painter and was no stranger to painting struggles of the human condition. “The shelf life of a shelter dog is 72 hours,” said Dervan. The power of the project lay in its emotional connection, and without the deep volume of paintings, those viewing it wouldn’t understand the feeling of it or have the motivation to make changes to reduce the numbers. The project in its

nascent stages began in the couple’s kitchen, and after painting the first 100 portraits, it seemed as if there was no horizon. Through Dervan’s media outreach efforts and sending the letters to cities nationwide, they eventually settled on Louisville, Kentucky, spending four years working diligently to complete the project that started in 2011. The Mellwood Arts and Entertainment Center would serve as the studio for the undertaking. The project features seven 8-by-8-foot paintings, done by scratch that include text. The portraits have a quality emphasizing a passion for animals, a palpable character allowing the audience to connect with each individual capturing each dog’s spirit and soul. The enormity of the project found Barone painting for 1,050 days. If it were to feature each portrait side-by-side, stacked 10-feet high, it would be the length of two football fields, showcasing the depth and size of the effort.

“It’s very powerful and spiritual stuff,” said Dervan. “He (Barone) said, ‘I know if I take on this project and I’m compelled to do it because I know what it is to be loved by an animal.’” Dogs played a large role in Barone’s healing process when he lost Santina, helping the artist get through his own struggles. Because of the project, he also knew he might become associated with only being a dog painter, and more than a decade later, Dervan often explains to people that Barone doesn’t paint dogs exclusively.

“He painted 5,500 dogs for a charitable cause to make a difference in the world,” said Dervan. “When he finished that, he went back to his regular painting. But because he became renowned for Act of Dog, those people only know him as that artist. Whereas other people, clients around the world who have his art, follow his other art.” However, the project wasn’t without its own pitfalls and adversity. The night before the Act of Dog was to be finished, Barone was five portraits from finishing the undertaking. That evening brought a massive storm and nearly 1,000 portraits were damaged or destroyed. Barone and Dervan
found themselves scurrying to wrap up and box 5,500 portraits and move the artwork in less than five days with another storm on the horizon. The project was such a large undertaking that Barone has become synonymous with painting dogs. He and Act of Dog were featured in a Public Broadcasting Service documentary that first aired in December 2017. However, shelter animals are not the only group Barone and Dervan are passionate about, they’ve also directed some of their focus to helping another group, humans. Those whose sacrifices resonate boldly, and their intrepid spirit and selflessness are simply forgotten or ignored when reintegrating into society. The Barones have partnered with Semper Fi Service Dogs to help veterans heal. Semper Fi Service Dogs rescues service dogs from high kill shelters and trains them to save veterans. “These young men and women go off to war and they’re pretty much abandoned,” said Dervan. “There isn’t a lot of aftercare. These men and women go into the military, so the rest of Americans can have their freedom…they get them ready for war but not ready for life. They have post traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries and a whole host of symptoms. The impact it has on their families and children is catastrophic. There are 22 suicides a day. We’ve talked with so many veterans, watched videos and listened to their stories. It’s the same story and we realize the powerful impact that animals can have on healing.” Mark Barone paints with purpose, whether it be humans, horses or dogs. He is available for commission work. Each year on the first Saturday in December, charming downtown Lebanon, Ohio, transforms into a magical holiday wonderland thanks to the Horse Drawn Carriage Parade & Christmas Festival. Now in its 34th year, the event brings generations together to celebrate the holiday season with aplomb. Managed by the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce, the event is underwritten by Altafiber and includes many other businesses in the Lebanon area who support and participate in the weekend’s festivities. . In 2023, the weekend is expected to feature nearly 70-80 carriages and attract more than 100,000 revelers. In the late 80s, Lebanon Chamber of Commerce President Pat South concepted the idea for the weekend’s festivities. "We wanted to establish some holiday events in beautiful downtown Lebanon to showcase the businesses in downtown and around town. And, to entertain local residents and hopefully draw from other local communities, too,” South said. “So, in 1988, we had kind of a trial run thinking that we liked the idea of horse-drawn carriages, and we had a small event with maybe eight horses and put together a committee, but

that wasn’t the official first parade. The next year, 1989, we decided that we had hit on something with the carriages, and we had our first parade. We wanted it to be all horse-drawn carriages; we didn’t want any other types of entries. "From 15 or 20 carriages and about 15,000 spectators that first year, the event grew rapidly, to double the entries and a crowd of nearly 100,000 four years later. It was an instant success." “The main highlight is the Horse Drawn Carriage Parade which features a wonderful, wide variety of equines,” said Karie Ingram, Executive Director, Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce. “Our first parade starts at 1:00pm and the evening parade at 7:00pm. We have a fun-filled day for everyone to enjoy the magic of the season! Mr. and Mrs. Claus make a visit, food and craft vendors are lined up along Mulberry Street and the downtown businesses welcome everyone throughout the day to dine and shop. There is special entertainment lined up for the day located on the main stage. It truly is a special day in downtown Lebanon!” A Lebanon native, the events of the weekend are nostalgic for Ingram. “I was born and raised in Lebanon and it's where I currently reside. The

A Magical Holiday Tradition in Lebanon, Ohio
Horse Drawn Carriage Parade & Christmas Festival has brought many memories for generations of families. Mine included! I can remember my dad dropping off his dump truck in the city parking lot early in the morning of the parade so we would have a front row seat to watch with the family. Now, as a mother myself, and watching many families with beaming smiles on their faces, it is the most rewarding sight to see. From the youngest to the oldest, everyone comes together to celebrate the magic of the season. I encourage anyone who has not been to this Parade and Festival to come out and experience an event that won't compare to any other. It's truly magical!” Any carriage that wants to participate is welcome! Interested parties can call 513.932.1100 or email info@lebanonchamber.org for an entry form.

The Tech Equestrian: Mane Street Market: Transforming the Buying & Selling Process
A Real-time Tool “I designed the app to be alive – since many of the horse-selling websites are static,” shared India, who launched the app in 2021. “The app is very easy to use, it allows you to list and view horses for sale, along with promoting equine businesses and services.” The app and online site feature an intelligent search to view on a map or as a list. There is also the ability to text sellers directly from the app and create lists of favorites, which is perfect for busy trainers who are shopping for multiple clients. “Another one of my goals was to create a platform that gives marketing sales horses and equine businesses an overall more professional feel.” How it Works The Mane Street Market website and app are designed to be simple for both the prospective buyer and horse seller and is based on the way that India personally likes to search for horses - in her local area or on a buying trip.
Quality. Class. Distinction.®
As a seller, you can count on Mane Street Market to promote a horse and service every day on our social platforms" The first step for the prospective buyer is to download the free app available at the App Store or Google Play. You can search by filter for location, breed, discipline or select ‘all’ to find the available horses in map or list view. The user does not have to create a free account but it is required in order to save horses as favorites and to make lists which are popular for trainers who are looking for a range of horses for their clients. A favorite user feature is the ability to contact the seller directly, as well as text, email or post the link on Facebook from the sales horses’ ad. In addition to creating a streamlined process for buyers to keep track of their favorites, the solution is beneficial when searching for popular equine services such as a chiropractor, vet, farrier, feed store, etc. For the seller or equine business owner, it’s also easy to create a sales ad or service listing. India remarked, "I have gotten several messages that sellers have listed their horses while actually on a horse! I had this in mind when creating the Mane Street Market app and I wanted to cater to equestrians who are always on the go.” As a seller, you’ll need to create an account on the website and click on the prompts that say, ‘List a Horse for Sale or Lease’ or ‘List a Service You Provide.’ The process is intuitive and will take you through each step, including having you choose one of two advertising plans - either $8.99 or $24.99 a month. You also can preview your ad before publishing and then click publish and the listing is live on the app and website within seconds. The solution gives you the flexibility of managing the listing because you are not tied to a contract and you can stop the subscription at any time by deleting the listing. All horses and businesses are promoted on the Mane Street Market social media outlets and in answer to ISO posts when possible.
Home page and samples of the sale horse posts you’ll find on the app.
Selling & Buying Tips “I recommend my sellers to be very clear when they advertise their horse(s) and to include accurate and complete information. You don’t have to put everything, but enough so you can match the right experience type and be transparent in the description to attract an ideal buyer.” She also recommends keeping the messaging consistent when posting multiple horses and to include a variety of performance and conformation pictures and videos. As a buyer, India suggests making sure you let the seller know what you can afford and ask for options if you need more flexibility on price and payout. “In the past, when I have been horse shopping, I had a situation where the horse was out of my price range, but it was truly the perfect match for my daughter. I approached the seller with ‘work with me’ options and the seller allowed me to sign a contract and make payments. If you are really interested in a horse, but can’t come up with the cash, approach the seller and make a case that you are going to offer a great home, let them know what kind of life the horse would have if they chose you. In this new economic and competitive environment, I think people are going to have to get creative.” Marketing Savvy India has a background in marketing and it shows in her laser focus to drive more downloads, increase visibility with more eyes on horses and services through her solution. “As a seller, you can count on Mane Street Market to promote a horse and service every day on our social platforms,” she said. To enhance the overall service aspect of the solution, she and her team also answer, ‘in search of ’ posts from other equestrian platforms.

Advertising packages offer flexible plans and pricing based on your goals. “Every single download and followers are real. I can authentically say you are reaching an actual equestrian, which is extremely important to advertisers,” India highlighted. This strategy is working and attracts repeat customers who trust the experience and get results. Expanding to New Markets and Finance Features Having success in the US has also been a springboard to recently expand to new markets. “We now feature horses and equine services in Canada, Ireland and the UK,” she said. “It takes time to build a successful business and I feel like we’ve got a great formula to move forward.” Through an affiliation with a highly reputable finance vendor, LightStream, Mane Street Market now provides the equestrians the ability to finance the purchase of a horse, horse trailer or other equine items. Loans are based on good credit through a flexible terms, no fees, hassle-free process through MSM’s partner LightStream. India noted that the general public uses financing options for their hobbies and professions and was determined to find a way to help equestrians find a reputable resource for this purpose. Interested parties can find a link to this resource on the Mane Street Market website.
We now feature horses and equine services in Canada, Ireland and the UK " What’s Trending? Over the past year, the big trend in the market, and what India has seen from the horses for sale on Mane Street Market, is that amateur, friendly horses are in high demand. “My theory is that so many people are working from home nowadays that they have more time in their day to dedicate to their equestrian goals,” she shared. This type of horse is in high demand and can be difficult to source. India has also noticed some of the top breeds that can deliver on being versatile in nature are more of the Draft crosses and Warmblood crosses. “Those types of breeds are amateur friendly because they typically have a great brain, easygoing personalities, can excel in the show ring and are versatile to hack out or go on trail rides.” Many want a horse they consider a partner that they love and that’s part of the family. Trainers are constantly in search of these unicorns. Because of the demand, the price points are typically high, depending on the horse’s demeanor, age, breed/bloodline and ability. “The pleasure horse and the competition horse are now one in the same for the amateur rider,” said India. She also cited other top-selling breeds include the Dutch Warmblood, and

believe it or not, the Dutch Harness Horse, especially in the dressage world is really growing. “The Dutch Harness horses are great for amateurs looking to ride low level dressage – they are fancy enough and they are priced in the mid-fives range.” India is seeing that Trakehners are on the rise. “There is a big push for their breeding program in the states now, where it used to be they were only imported. Many top professionals in Eventing and Dressage compete Trakehners, so there is more of a demand for them.” Rounding out the top breeds for sale, the Friesian Sport Horses and Friesian crosses are popular options. Catering to the ‘Busiest People on the Planet’ Asked about her prediction for technology adoption in the horse industry in five years, India thinks the trend is moving in the right direction. “I’ve learned so much on how technology can help us save time, energy and resources as an equestrian. And as we know, equestrians are the busiest people on the planet, caring for horses is a 24-hour business.” With the Mane Street Market app solution, it underscores how transforming horse tech can help equestrians save time and aid the demands of equine businesses. “I also encourage equestrians to be more open to technology, which will ultimately create an environment of happy and healthy horses and horse owners.”
