The Evolution of Marigot Bay Farm: Kevin Gallagher & Kelly

Photo: WEC

Nestled in the rolling hills of Lexington, Kentucky, Marigot Bay Farm is a cherished family-owned farm that has evolved into the home base of Kelly Arani and professional show jumper Kevin Gallagher. With its four picturesque white barns, the farm’s history spans decades as a training facility for horses and riders competing at the top of the sport.

For Kelly, Marigot Bay represents a full-circle journey. Growing up in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts, Kelly was introduced to the top level of equestrian sport at an early age. Encouraged by her mom and sisters, horses became an integral part of her life. The founding of Marigot Bay Farm in 2004 by her mother, Stacey Arani, and her aunt, Leslie Pack, was a watershed moment for Kelly and would eventually shape her future in the sport.

“When Marigot Bay started, my mom was competing at a high level in the hunters,” Kelly recalled. “We rented farms for about 10 years before buying the farm in Lexington in 2014. Kaitlin Campbell and Leslie trained my sisters, Madison and Reid, and me until we were ready to move on to other trainers like Shane Sweetnam, who helped us take our riding to the next level.”

For several years, Marigot Bay focused on boarding and retirement horses. But recently, Kelly and her business and life partner, Kevin Gallagher, have breathed new life into the farm.

Kevin’s journey in the sport began in Sligo, Ireland, where lessons with his sister at the McGarry Riding Center sparked his passion for the sport. “I started riding with my older sister, Nicole. She was obsessed with horses. I went for a few lessons with Declan McGarry and then we got our

first ponies. We trained with the Kerins’ for a long time after that. Once I got a little taste of success, I was hooked,” Kevin shared.

There was a natural progression from his first pony to his first riding job in college that fed a fierce sense of competitiveness which ultimately drove him to the five-star level of show jumping sport.

“I was in college in my hometown in Sligo and got a job working for Declan. I went with him to the Sunshine Tour with six horses and that was my start to learning how to produce young horses. I came home, called mom and dad, and never went back to college! The rest was history.”

Kevin’s career was further shaped under the

guidance of top professionals in Ireland including Marion Hughes and Greg Broderick. “I got the ride on one horse that I jumped four senior Nations Cups on. He jumped six out of eight rounds clear. That experience was truly invaluable.”

Marigot Bay Today

With rich backgrounds in horsemanship and experience at the international level, Kelly and Kevin seemed destined to meet. The pair first crossed paths during the 2022 Florida winter circuit.

“I was working out of Ballypatrick Stables when I met Kelly in Florida in 2022,” said Kevin. “After the circuit, I went back home to Ireland.”

The pair maintained a long-distance relationship for over a year, including while Kelly trained with Laura Kraut and Nick Skelton in Europe. “In August 2023, we decided to pursue our own business together,” Kelly said.

The duo established their partnership under the existing Marigot Bay banner, returning to the Lexington farm that Kelly’s family had founded twenty years earlier. “It’s special to be back on the farm,” Kelly reflects. “It feels like coming full circle, especially since I hadn’t been able to use the farm before. Coming back here gave us the opportunity to

invite in what this was going to become for us. Now, to build our business here as a family venture feels really meaningful.”

After settling into their new adventure together, the talented pair made their debut as official business partners at World Equestrian Center – Wilmington

during the 2023 Fall Classic Series. With a small group of horses, they found the welcoming facility invaluable for launching their business.

“It is one of our favorite shows,” said Kevin. “It is an incredible place to develop green horses and the future grand prix horses. There is great prize money without over facing them. The jumps and footing are incredible and it is just a really great place to be.”

Building for the Future

Kelly and Kevin have built their business to fill a gap in the industry, developing young horses to be safe and successful for the amateur market, helping them to reach their full potential.

“Horses here in America are developed for the professional market. There is not enough focus on bringing up young horses for the juniors and amateurs. That’s what I want to break into and WEC has helped us do that,” Kevin shared.

Photo: Winslow Photography

Along with improving their horses and business each day, Kevin and Kelly have found new motivation in their day-to-day life on the farm and a reignited passion for the sport in supporting each other.

“I love what we are building together,” said Kelly. “It is amazing to watch it improve and change. Learning from Kevin every day and getting to wake up feeling like we have so much purpose in what we do is incredible. Kevin wants to see me win my first grand prix, and he gives me the confidence to go in and do that. We’re both driven by the same purpose and that is really special.”

GoingGlobe for her

She is 13 going on 30, with a candor that catches even seasoned horsemen off guard, but don’t let that fool you. Rebecca

‘Shayne’ Gilliam, daughter of Jason and Jessica of Gilliam Show Horses in Greensburg, Indiana, knows how fortunate she is to be in a family comfortable with creating champions. Her journey with American Quarter Horses began early, with special connections to

horses like the late Motion By Pro (Moe), and Chocolatey Special K (KayKay).

At seven, Shayne wasn’t just riding—she was hustling. While competing with Moe (at age 30) in Small Fry classes, she set up a boot-shining business at horse shows, turning a prize from a previous competition into nearly $200 a day. That’s how you earn hay money for a horse like KayKay, who, like Shayne, is 13. Together, they claimed their first championship at the 2019 All American

as told to L.A. Berry

Quarter Horse Congress, and two years later, the 11 & Under Trail Congress title. “I had the biggest score of my life!” she recalls with pride. “I even beat my dad’s score!”

In April, Jason rode Mr Zippos Good Bar to the Championship in the NSBA 3 & Over Maiden Trail at the 2024 Orange Blossom Classic at WEC – Ocala. “Sadly,” she says drolly as a wizened bull rider, “he bumped me since then. We’ll have to change that.”

STANDS OUT IN ITS FIELD.

When did you start riding?

As a baby! My mom rode when she was pregnant, so I was riding in the womb!

What’s the best ‘horse advice’ you’ve gotten from your mom and dad?

My dad is one of my biggest influencers. When I go in the pen he says, ‘Don’t beat yourself.’ Mom shows me how to be a respectful rider.

What is your favorite/least favorite part of a lesson?

My favorite is when I connect with my horse. My least favorite is when I cannot get a pattern down no matter how I try.

What are your strong points as a rider?

Myself. My ability to connect with my horses.

What do you have to work on most?

Body work and posture. I have a 30-minute workout that builds my core.

Who is a rider that you look up to?

Kaleena (Katz) Weakly. She never lets a bad day get in the way of a good ride.

How do you balance school with horse shows?

I’m homeschooling at FaithPrep Academy. We have a lot of colts on the ground so I’ll have to step up my game!

What’s your favorite thing about showing at WEC?

How thoughtful everyone is and the convenience to really good breakfasts.

MARION THERAPEUTIC RIDING ASSOCIATION

A 40-Year VISION:

THROUGH

HORSES

IN THE HEART OF OCALA Healing

Joey Cardone & Lea Brayton
Photography by Maven Photo & Film

Loving horses started at just 22-months old for Catherine Sears, Executive Director of the Marion Therapeutic Riding Association (MTRA) in Ocala, Florida. Growing up on a working horse farm with a father who is a trainer, it’s easy to see why Sears feels such a deep connection to horses – and why she’s made it her life’s work to share that feeling with others. As Executive Director, Sears brings warmth and empathy to her job, “creating better days and better tomorrows” for at-risk youth, veterans and children with developmental disabilities in Marion County.

For those unfamiliar with MTRA, the 501(c) (3) not-for-profit is located on the Cross Florida Greenway in Ocala, Florida, just 15 miles from World Equestrian Center. For over 40 years since its inception in 1983, MTRA has carried out its mission of uplifting the lives of people with disabilities, veterans and at-risk youth by connecting horses and humans.

Today, MTRA has a full program schedule serviced by roughly 22 resident horses, including the famed Major Tom—the 2023 American Morgan Horse Association’s Therapy Horse of the Year. Each horse dutifully carries out a weekly rotation of lessons and educational classes where they connect with someone in need.

MTRA programs serve those with physical, emotional or cognitive challenges, all supported

by volunteers. Using what MTRA describes as an “adaptive equestrian experience” model, the organization provides a full range of equine-assisted programs from traditional therapeutic horseback riding to innovative applications, like equine-assisted speech pathology in partnership with Advent Health. Through the Ocala Veterans Center, MTRA has been able to offer US veterans equine-assisted psychotherapy free of cost.

MTRA staff and program instructors are Credentialed Therapeutic Riding Instructors (CTRI) certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International to ensure the highest standards of safety. Supported by educated instructors and a fleet of dedicated volunteers, students enrolled in their diverse programs are encouraged to build selfesteem and independence.

“Horses free the mind, body and soul,” said Sears. “MTRA is a place of no judgment, a place that wants to give purpose and make a better today and tomorrow by consistently moving students forward.”

“Horses free the mind, body and soul,” said Sears. “MTRA is a place of no judgment, a place that wants to give purpose and make a better today and tomorrow by consistently moving studentsforward.”

Connecting Through Horses

A different world than the glitz and glam of competitive equestrian events, equine-assisted therapy relies on the special connection between horses and humans — a feeling all equestrians understand to be akin to a kind of real-life “magic.”

“Coming here, it's that hour of peace, that hour of taking care of a horse, the hour of energy release – it’s freeing,” said Sears. “We see incredible things all the time, like a child with a condition preventing them from speaking may be able to say small words like 'whoa!' or 'horsey' when they're on

that horse. Physically, someone in a wheelchair, who isn't moving or using their lower body muscles can experience what it’s like to walk through the horse once they’re in the saddle. Our students get a sense of freedom at that moment.”

Six days a week, MTRA staff witness remarkable growth in their participants both inside and outside of the arena, recalled instructor and Outreach Coordinator, Jenna Rovira. “I have a student who doesn't normally track the days of the week, but on riding days, he would wake up and have his boots and pants laid out. He knew what day of the week it was and he was motivated.”

Lessons are held in group settings, allowing students to learn alongside each other and meet new milestones together. Students support, encourage and cheer each other on, which, in turn,

An Enduring Legacy

Like most nonprofit organizations, MTRA relies on community funding to support their work. They regularly host events and activities like the 2025 Tee Up for MTRA Charity Golf Tournament and the annual Not-So-Spooky Fall Festival, which help raise awareness for their mission in addition to raising funds. Beyond events, donors are welcomed to make designated contributors for specific programs or sponsor a horse to cover the costs of vet care and hay.

With an incredible community of equine enthusiasts supporting their work in the Horse Capital of the World®, there’s no better place for MTRA to be able to make a difference to so many.

To join MTRA’s mission to create a more inclusive and empowered community, visit mtraocala.org.

can “improve social skills, boost self-esteem and provide a sense of belonging,” said Rovira. The shared experiences and mutual goals create a supportive environment where students can thrive.

Volunteers often return to work with the same students week-overweek, and on the arena rail, loved ones and guardians can also find community together.

In the heart of horse country, MTRA has a small but mighty staff of horse-savvy employees. The organization largely relies on support from the local Ocala community for the manpower to teach more than 170 riders each week. With a growing waitlist, the volunteer program has 150 regular, active volunteers carrying out all manner of jobs from assisting riders in therapeutic sessions to maintaining the barn, mowing fields or mending fences. “We would not be able to survive by just ourselves,” said Sears. “Our volunteers are the absolute heart of the program.”

Previous “Cooks and Books” programs have included chefs from World Equestrian Center – Ocala and the Marion Technical College, as well as authors Connie Mann, John Cech and Mary Flynn. In partnership with the Marion County Hospital District and various Friends of the Library groups, the public library system has been hosting this amazing medley of talented chefs and engaging authors for the past three years.

This fall, Chef Yohann Le Bescond, World Equestrian Center – Ocala Complex Executive Pastry Chef, shared the “Cooks and Books” stage with three local authors in a series of in-person programs at various Marion County Public Library System locations. “AS I SEE THAT SPARKLE IN HER EYE BEFORE SHE HEADS ON TO THE COURSE, I SEE HER PASSION GROWING FOR BOTH THE HORSE AND THE SPORT”
- DR. MICHAEL HORE HAGYARD VETERINARIAN

His intense passion for horses has led Dr. Michael Hore to a 20-year career as a performance horse and lameness specialist. Indeed, he takes great pride in customizing care plans that help return horses to the arena and performing at the top of their class once again.

Today that pride also takes another form, as he lovingly supports his daughter who is just starting her career in the ring. Because, like all Hagyard veterinarians, equine care is more than a profession. It’s a lifestyle. Doesn’t your horse deserve a level of care born of that passion and commitment?

Tech Equestrian: Title of Article
Right: Natalie and her unicorn horse, Don

Part vet tech and part management solution – Barncat app is the latest newcomer to horse health technology that gives horse owners an advanced tool to monitor and track their horses’ health.

The Tech Equestrian had a chance to catch up with Natalie Martin, founder and CEO of the Barncat app to learn more about her exciting digital platform and plans for the future.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Natalie Martin’s journey with horses began at age seven when she struck a deal with her grandfather that for every swimming lesson she completed, she could have a riding lesson. “This arrangement ignited a lifelong obsession with horses,” shared Natalie. At the age of 10, she became heavily involved in Pony Club, which led her to fall in love with eventing and horse management.

In 2015, Natalie got Don, her unicorn dressage horse. “My horse had numerous physical and emotional issues, which necessitated meticulous tracking of his care to ensure his health and happiness,” she said and added, “This experience profoundly impacted the development of Barncat app.”

A Modern Era of Horse Management

“I think one of the fundamental challenges we are trying to help solve is to bring the horse industry into the modern era,” said Natalie. Given that managing horses’ health can be complex, Barncat app is designed to keep everything organized, trackable and easy to reference. “And given equestrians’ investment in their horses, you’ll be able to track where your money is going and what results you are getting.”

Easing into the App

To help users learn how to best leverage features like the digital timeline, the team at Barncat app created a demo horse called ‘Zeta’ along with tutorials. “We intentionally designed the app to be open to what the individual wants to track. With that in mind, the developers incorporated a hashtag system. For example, when tracking an injury, you can use a specific hashtag for that

injury, and then for everything you post about the injury, you can tag it to make it easier to review entries and create a timeline. “The solution needed to be customizable, but simple,” Natalie added.

App Features

Augmented Reality (AR) Hoof Photo

One of the main features of the app is the ability to capture consistent photos over multiple trim and shoeing cycles – which tracks your horse’s hoof condition over time. “The app enables a sideby-side comparison using augmented reality tech that makes sharing photos with your vet and farrier simple and easy,” Natalie pointed out. “We do hope to expand the augmented reality feature to use for the whole body.”

Digital Timeline

In addition, the app is ideal for organizing and managing a digital timeline. Add any notes, photos or PDFs and use custom tags to categorize and manage using the search and filter function.

Service Options

“We offer a free version, which is ideal for uploading vaccine records and Coggins.” There is also a premium subscription for the horse owners who are dealing with an actual issue they want to track. “I encourage users to take advantage of the photo analysis and advanced features, especially if you are managing a current situation.”

Sharing Data with Your Trainer

would need to have the app – if they have the free version, they can only view what is posted. If the owner and trainer are premium users, you can collaborate and post to that horse's timeline.

“We recently launched a feature that allows users to sync accounts, bringing another level of transparency.” Natalie shared that trainers ask for this sort of capability. As a horse owner, you can share your horse’s data with your trainer – they

Canadian course designer Peter Grant has become a significant figure in the hunter/jumper industry. As an FEI Level III course designer and both an EC senior and USEF ‘R’ rated hunter course designer, he is internationally recognized for his expertise. Grant has crafted numerous five-star tracks across the globe and has been part of course design teams at some of the most prestigious equestrian events, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2010 and 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games, the 2007 and 2017 FEI Jumping World Cup™ Finals, the 2022 FEI World Championships in Herning, Denmark, and most recently, the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Reflecting on his journey to becoming a distinguished course designer, Grant often laughs at how it all started—almost by accident. Growing up

near Vancouver, Canada, he was immersed in the equestrian world from an early age, with his father working as a farrier at Thunderbird Horse Park in Langley. During his college years, Grant took on a summer job at Thunderbird, helping in the barns and working on the jump crew.

During one of the Thunderbird shows, a course designer unexpectedly quit, leaving a gap that needed filling. Due to a rule limiting the number of rings a course designer can design at a show in Canada, Grant was chosen to step in. With some riding experience from his childhood and his time on the jump crew, it was a trial by fire— one that ignited his passion for course design.

"By default, it fell into my lap," he shares. "I was fortunate that Chris Brandt, one of the other course designers there, was excellent at mentoring young designers. He would come out and check the

course throughout the week and I really enjoyed it. It scratched an itch, and right away, I was hooked. From there, it just progressed."

After two years of designing at Thunderbird, Grant decided course design was his calling. “Both of my parents were horse people—my mother was a quarter horse trainer and my dad a farrier—so they were supportive, but they clearly told me I was going to have to work harder doing that than doing anything else. I was set and determined.”

A significant turning point in Grant’s career came when he was given the opportunity to work at Spruce Meadows, a prestigious equestrian venue in Canada. “I got to go to Spruce Meadows early on as an assistant, and all along, Linda Southern-Heathcott [the President and Chief Executive Officer at Spruce Meadows] gave me numerous opportunities to make big jumps in my career and everything fell into place.”

For me, the WEC Grand Arena is one of the greatest rings in the world,” he says. “The atmosphere here is incredible. The experience, no matter the level, leaves you with better horses.
When it started, I didn’t know much,” he admits. “But everything has a learning curve, which is what intrigued me—the way so many different factors work together to create the appropriate competition and course.

“I was a [Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI)] Level II course designer in 2009 and got my Level III promotion in 2011. I met so many incredible people at Spruce Meadows and learned from some of the best in the business.”

Grant’s journey from a novice designer to a respected figure in the sport is marked by a continuous learning process. “When it started, I didn’t know much,” he admits. “But everything has a learning curve, which is what intrigued me—the way so many different factors work together to create the appropriate competition and course.”

One of the most fascinating aspects of course design for Grant is the creative freedom it offers. “I wouldn’t have considered myself a creative person before, but for some reason, when it comes to courses, sometimes I get out of hand,” he laughs. His approach to designing courses is both methodical and intuitive. He begins by plotting the path the horses will take and considers the dimensions—the height, spreads and distances— between the fences. As the week progresses, he refines the plan, always keeping the end goal in mind: the Grand Prix on Saturday night.

World Equestrian Center – Ocala has become one of Grant’s favorite venues to design for. “I met Bobby Murphy and Jon Garner at Spruce Meadows years ago. When [World Equestrian Center –Ocala] opened up, I was fortunate to be on their list,” he shares. “I’ve enjoyed every moment and every chance I’ve had to come here.”

Grant has garnered praise from exhibitors from the very beginning. Since its inception, Grant has been designing courses at WEC – Ocala, and with the venue now hosting more international competition, he has led the course design for several three-star competitions. “For me, the WEC Grand Arena is one of the greatest rings in the world,” he says. “The atmosphere here is incredible. The experience, no matter the level, leaves you with better horses. Every time I come to WEC – Ocala, whether it’s a national event or not, you get that sense—it has that championship feel.”

“Some of the best riders in the world have come to WEC and left at the top of their game. André Thieme [of Germany] won the four-star grand prix here in the winter and then went off to win the five-star in Aachen. Daniel Coyle wintered at WEC – Ocala with his string of horses and he started his brand-new horse ‘Incredible.’ Now, he’s winning in Europe and winning five-star competitions all around the world with that horse,” he adds. “The ring and the atmosphere here is just so impressive, we get to work with the best jumps and the best decor in the business. WEC also has the best jump crew in the business. We couldn’t do our job as fully as we do here without such a great team.”

Grant’s dedication to his craft is evident in every course he designs. He takes pride in creating courses that not only test the riders and horses but also provide an exciting spectacle for the audience.

“I always put a lot of pressure on myself because it’s the rider’s sport—they invest a lot of time and effort to be here,” he says. “But when they come to WEC, you want to step up and provide that special course that leaves a lasting impression.”

Grant added another impressive achievement to his resume, contributing to the course design at his second Olympic Games. In Paris, he assisted with the tracks that challenged the world’s best riders.

Grant will return to World Equestrian Center – Ocala for the highly-anticipated 2025 Winter Spectacular Show Series to showcase his skills once again in the international jumping ring and the hunter ring.

One Kraut Laura Laura Three Medals,

Photos by US EQuestrian

Laura Kraut has established herself as a dominant force in the equestrian industry, with a Jumping career that spans decades of top-level competition. Equestrian sport has been part of her life since childhood, and after being named as an alternate for the U.S. team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, her career truly took off. Since then, Kraut has competed in four Olympic Games, winning three medals: team gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, team silver in Tokyo 2020, and another team silver at Paris 2024.

In Paris, Kraut made Olympic history for the second time by becoming the oldest American woman to win an Olympic medal since 1904, which she had first done at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. “My age was brought up a lot, and it doesn't bother me,” said Kraut. “I think in my head, I still feel like I’m 25! What’s really great is what it says about our sport, that age actually makes you better. With age comes wisdom and experience.”

But her success isn’t limited to Olympic titles. Kraut has built a reputation both as a fierce competitor and as a master at developing young horses, guiding them to the sport’s highest levels. Her current top mount, Baloutinue, a 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by St. Bride’s Farm, has been key to her recent victories and is considered one of the top horses in the world.

With the 2024 Paris Olympics now behind Kraut and Baloutinue, she reflected on the road to their successful Paris journey. “We started with the Longines League of Nations™ at World Equestrian Center – Ocala, then had the Longines League of Nations™ event in Rotterdam, then the Nations Cup in Aachen, leading up to Paris,” she explained. These five-star team events were critical in her view. “It’s crucial to feel like you can go head-to-head against who will ultimately be your opposition at the Olympics.”

Kraut and Baloutinue’s training regimen and competition schedule were meticulously planned, considering “Balou’s” fitness and recovery after two freak injuries between the Tokyo and the Paris Games.

“To get him back in shape was easy compared to other horses, and I knew if he remained fit and healthy, he’d be ready for Paris.”

After the Nations Cup™ in Aachen, Germany, Kraut planned to focus on keeping the fitness but not overworking him, using the facilities at her European base in Holland to train. “I was able to take him to Peelbergen Equestrian Centre and build a nice 1.50m track, to keep him going, without overdoing it. We did a lot of long trails, some gymnastics and focused a lot on flat work. We maybe jumped twice before the Games after Aachen, because after that show, I felt like he was in great shape.”

One of the key differences at this Olympic Games was the proximity of the Paris venue, a stark contrast to previous Olympics that required extensive travel.

“The four previous Olympics I’ve been to — Sydney, Hong Kong, Rio [as traveling alternate], and Tokyo—

It felt like a local show, and it took a minute to get mentally prepared.”

Upon arriving in Paris, Kraut’s experience and her deep trust in Baloutinue allowed her to quickly focus on the competition. “I felt more relaxed than ever before at a championship. I had so much confidence in Balou,” she shared. Despite the inevitable nerves, Kraut remained steady throughout the event, contributing to the U.S. team’s silver medal performance. The pair was also the U.S. team’s highest-placed combination in eighth individually.

“You're always going to have nerves, no matter what competition you're at. If it's important enough, you feel nerves. But I thought we had a great team and great preparation,” she said, emphasizing the importance of mental readiness.

Stepping onto the podium to accept a team medal once again was a proud moment for Kraut, especially

“In Tokyo, there was no audience. This time, it was incredible to see the stands filled and so many American flags around the ring. It was really special.”

While Kraut acknowledged her impressive Olympic career, she continues to look ahead with aspirations for future championships. “I’m very, very proud of the Olympics that I've ridden in. What I really love is being a part of a team that does this. I think each experience I've had has been with great riders and people who I admire and respect. It’s easy to feel proud of the medals,” Kraut recognized.

Kraut remains committed, despite the physical demands of the sport. “I’d be 62 by the next Olympics, but if I have a horse like Balou, I’ll keep going.”
