M E TA L M A S T E R P I E C E S Here in West Texas, when we see a belt buckle, we immediately think of two things: Texas and Rodeos. That’s why Hyo Silver jewelry is the epitome of Texas jewelry! The reason this Bandera, Texas brand looks like something you’d see on a belt buckle is because belt buckles are one of their popular items along with earrings, pendants, chains and custom rings!

MASON JARS
SWEET AND SIMPLE
Mason jars by themselves make for the ideal wedding favor. One person who takes it home could store a delicious cookie mix in it while another could plant greenery or clusters of flowers in the jar. So, attach a cute saying to the lid and let your friends and family let their creativity reign! Brides, jazz it up with colors from your blissful affair so your friends and family always remember your day!
ADD A LITTLE CHARM
Mason jars also make amazing table centerpieces! These are great because the bride can display a bundle of flowers, floating candles, or attach burlap for a country chic look. Combine all three sizes or design others to create a captivating ambience for you and your guests.
TA S T Y T R E AT S
This little cookie is the cutest! This is a great idea for brides who like to think outside of the box and have a little bit of fun when planning all the details. This fun shaped cookie proves that even with a mason jar or rustic elegant themed wedding, there are no boundaries limit the usefulness of mason jars.

SOUTHERN COMFORT FOODS TO SERVE ON YOUR WEDDING DAY - 19 -
WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
Everybody knows Texans have an enormous amount of state pride, and something we take extreme pride in is our choice of cuisine! Deciding on the eats and treats that will be served at your reception is an important factor to consider when planning your Texas wedding. Here are eight wonderful ways to incorporate southern-style cooking into your big day!
APPETIZERS/SIDES JA L A P E Ñ O P O P P E R S
Let’s spice things up! It’s always a smart idea to have a tray of appetizers floating around for your guests to snack on. Jalapeño poppers are a fantastic choice for your southern menu. Not only are they delicious but also easy to eat. No silverware is required.
P OTATO E S
If you are looking for a dish to make your guests feel right at home then potatoes should be number one on the menu. Potatoes are the ultimate comfort food and are tasty with just about anything. . Mashed, baked, fried, or even sweet potatoes are essential to a southern meal.
TEXAS TRASH
Feeding your guests is easy, but keeping their stomachs full can be challenging. A Texas Trash bar would fit impeccably with your Texas wedding. You can provide a variety of different sweet, salty, or spicy mixes for everyone to choose from. Your guests will be munching throughout the whole night.
ENTREES Photo by Reese Moore Weddings
BBQ
Barbecue is a must! No barbecue is complete without sausage, ribs and beans. It would be impossible to serve everyone’s favorite food with just one meal, but who doesn’t love the variety of food at a barbecue? This gives your guests more options to choose from, and you just can’t go wrong with a table filled with sizzling Texas favorites.
CHICKEN FRIED STEAK As Texans, most of us know and love all things fried. From fried entrees to fried desserts, there isn’t any food that can’t and won’t be fried. Chicken fried steak is a great entrée choice. Don’t forget to put out the gravy!
STEAK KABOBS
Time to fire up the grill for this southern favorite. We’re talking about steak! Steak kabobs are an excellent choice for an outdoor summer party. Serving kabobs is a bit-size twist to a traditional steak bite. If you want to stay true to your Texas pride but also want to keep your gathering classy, steak kabobs are the way to go!
- 20 -
DESSERTS COBBLER
Who says cake has to be the only way to satisfy your sweet tooth? Wedding cake is tradition, but you can also add another possibility to the menu. Cobbler is a very popular dessert choice here in the south, especially at a BBQ. There is an assortment of flavors to choose from, like apple, cherry, blueberry, and of course peach. No matter which flavors you choose, you can never have too many desserts!
PECAN PIE
Who wants dessert? Pecan pie is a southern sweet that’s never a bad idea to top off a Texas size meal. Pecan pie will bring you right back home deep in the heart of Texas. Just a slice of pecan pie will be the perfect ending to your southern affair.

Brides to be LINE UP AT THE BARRE E very bride wants to look and feel their best on the big day. In most cases, this means losing weight and specifically targeting those hard to reach areas where fat tends to cling no matter what we do. This is frustrating and leads women to believe there is just nothing they can do to reach those problem zones. Not true! Barre classes have exploded onto the fitness scene over the last few years and have become wildly popular with women of all fitness levels. BARREffect is an intense but highly achievable total body sculpting class that will create the long, lean dancer’s physique every bride is searching for. This barre-based workout combines pilates, yoga, ballet and dance principals to stretch, tone and lengthen muscles like never before. Each 55-minute class combines isometric
exercises and orthopedic stretches that challenge every muscle and burn fat like crazy while creating long lean muscles.
Fitting into that perfect wedding dress is attainable, but wishing and wanting won’t make it happen. Regularly attending a class like BARREffect will, however, go a long way to making this dream a reality. Also, consistency is key. Particularly if you’re not a gym regular, commit to attending a class at least five times before you decide it’s not for you. So what does a typical BARREffect class consist of? BARREffect class is a unique combination of ballet and pilates based moves paired with light weights. This is not a high impact cardiovascular workout. You will begin with a light but
- 24 -
effective warmup and then move right into upper body work. Light weights about 2-3 lb. are used to target and tone triceps, biceps and shoulders. What’s different about the BARREffect approach to toning these small muscle groups? The BARREffect method really zeroes in on the smaller muscles surrounding your main muscle groups. These small muscle fibers will strengthen to really enhance the sculpted appearance of the upper body without making you look bulky.
Next we move to barre and floor work to create the burn that you will learn to love! Legs, hips and booty are now the focus and what you can achieve with no weight resistance will amaze you! The actual ballet barre is used mainly for balance and form, so no tutus required!
SWEATING FOR THE WEDDING
With the same small isometric movements, you will make your way through each muscle group of the lower body working each muscle to fatigue. Incorporating deep stretches in between each intense sculpting sequence encourages muscles to lengthen, thereby giving us the lean muscular look rather than the more bulky one that most brides tend to avoid. Burn at the barre will become a mantra you will be very familiar with and you will soon learn that when the legs are shaking the change is happening! Finally, the focus moves to the core. As with every other element of the BARREffect workout, the core is conditioned thoroughly and to fatigue. Upper and lower abdominal muscles as well as obliques and back muscles are targeted to challenge your core and entire posterior chain.
m
ar
y
An encouraging and engaging instructor will guide you throughout the workout while offering options for modification and demonstrating proper technique which will allow you to get the most out of your time at The Barre. Why are BARRE classes such a craze? Simply put, it’s because they work! Many people report seeing results in as little as 3 weeks. Adding BARREffect to your current workout regimen, along with a sensible and healthy diet will most definitely have you wedding dress ready in no time!

ASK THE EXPERT
HOW TO HANDLE
west texas weather You know the old saying, “If you don’t like the West Texas weather, just wait a minute, it will change” is really true. This was totally apparent in our wedding last week. We had 60 mile-per-hour winds, then rain and by mid afternoon the sun was shining and the skies were clear. The best thing to do is to be as prepared as possible and just roll with it. We have included a list of things to help you handle what Mother Nature may throw your way.
BUGS
Have mosquito spray on hand for your guests to use. Dryer sheets work well, and they don’t leave a greasy, smelly residue. Dryer sheets can be rubbed on the skin, and then carried in a pocket. Use fresh Rosemary on your catering tables to repel flies and bugs. They are not only pretty but also fragrant and work well with most décor.
RAIN
Have a back up plan for outside venues. Storms can come up very quickly in West Texas. Plan, Plan, Plan. Oh yes, did I mention, Plan? Don’t wait until the week or even day of the wedding to think about bad weather options. Plan out months in advance what you will do in the event of bad weather and share your contingency plan with your guests and venders. A prepared bride is a stress-free bride. Consider hiring a bus or van to drive guests to and from your venue if the weather turns bad. Pulling your guests out of rain filled ditches is not a great wedding pleaser.
WIND
The first thing you think about with West Texas is our glorious wind, Yuck! Choose a location with a wind block. We all know how strong our West Texas winds can be, so something as simple as a tree strip or building to block the wind can be a real wedding saver. Consider purchasing tablecloth weights as well. Wow, are these ever worth the money. They simply clip to the bottom of the tablecloth.
- 26 -
H E AT
On hot sunny days make sure you have a shady place for your elderly guests and families with small children to cool off. Heat exhaustion can come on very quickly. Have plenty of cold water for your guests to drink and you may consider fans, Many of our brides have doubled their wedding program as fans.
- 27 -
ASK THE EXPERT
SEASONS
Choose the time of day wisely for the time of year you are getting married. For example, an outdoor summer wedding is much more comfortable in late evening, where as, a fall or spring wedding may be more comfortable in mid afternoon.
DÉCOR
Most brides that choose an outdoor venue, do so because it is already so beautiful. Don’t forget to add some season appropriate decorations to make it unique to you. Of course you want to choose wisely for the specific time of year and weather. Again, keep in mind our West Texas wind and heat. Delicate flowers don’t hold up very well outside for long periods of time. Keep them watered and in the shade if possible.
J U S T RO L L W I T H I T
Last but certainly not least, “Just Roll with it,” don’t get to worked up if every little plan doesn’t work out. If rain pops up, get umbrellas and just remember that your pictures will be so fun and the clouds are a great filter. If wind hits with a vengeance hold onto your hair and skirt and laugh it off. At the end of the day, you are marrying a wonderful person, and you get to spend the rest of your life together. Don’t sweat the small stuff!! Have fun and love each other for the rest of your life.
ABOUT WALNUT TREE WEDDINGS Robin and Jacquie Spain, and Chuck and Melissa Harris Started Walnut Tree on prayer and faith. We all heard the Lord say “Do it, and do it big.” So off we went. We are so blessed to have a venue with so many established trees, many over 100 years old. It was as if we had a head start. Walnut Tree has several gardens, an 80 year old feed mill that we moved in for our reception area. An old Chicken house was converted into our brides room, grooms room, bathrooms, and of course our gourmet kitchen. We also have an authentic 1950’s soda shop. This has added so much fun to our weddings, and guests just love it. We are an all inclusive venue, which completely takes the stress out of wedding planning. We do it all. Florals, catering, decorating, coordinating, set up/clean up. We have our own tables and chairs as well as beautiful linens. We also have a DJ, photographers and wedding cakes available.
When unique matters call Walnut Tree Weddings
T E M P E R AT U R E C H A N G E S
Remember that our West Texas evenings can get chilly. If you have a spring or fall wedding, consider having blankets or jackets available for your guests.
C R E AT E A C O M F O RTA B L E E N V I RO N M E N T If you are using a barn or other alternative venue, make sure it is heated and cooled. Barns make such a beautiful setting for a wedding or reception, but when you get 100 plus people in any enclosed area, the temperature rises very quickly.

REAL WEDDING
kelsy jared Photography by Tara Hobgood Photography
THE BEGINNING Jared and I are high school sweethearts! I met Jared my sophomore year in high school while playing tennis. Jared and I ran around with the same group of friends, so we were constantly seeing each other or going on lake trips on the weekends. We never really started talking until summer before senior year. I would always get butterflies in my stomach when talking to him.I knew there was something special about this guy. One night while we were talking on the phone, Jared asked me to be his girlfriend. I said yes, and we have been inseparable ever since!
T H E P RO P O S A L Jared proposed in the Grand Cayman Islands. Jared’s mom, his sister, my mom, and I decided to take a girls trip to the Cayman Islands and were looking forward to a relaxing week of laying on the beach and chilling. Little did I know that this girl’s trip would turn into the most exciting trip of my life! Thursday night we, the girls, decided to go out to eat at a restaurant down the beach from where we were staying. My mom and I still had no clue that Jared and the rest of our family had rented another room at the same villa. Karla and Ragan convinced my mom and I to take our rental car to the restaurant (at the time I didn’t understand why we couldn’t just walk on the beach). After we got to the restaurant and made our way to the beach, Jared was there waiting for me. I was completely shocked and confused. He took my hand and led me down the beach back to our villa. As I got closer, I could see a rose pedal heart and a “MARRY ME?” sign. He led me to the sign, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him! I said yes!! Soon after, the rest of mine and Jared’s family came out from behind a tiki hut and surprised me! The rest is history.

THE DRESS
THE FOOD
My mom, sisters, mother-in-law, sisterin-law, and a couple of my bridesmaids went with me to Dallas to get THE dress. Walking into my first appointment, I knew I wanted a trumpet wedding dress with lace. After trying on what I thought was my dream dress, I knew the dress wasn’t for me. My sister saw a dress on another girl in the same boutique that had beading and silk material at the bottom. Everything I did not want! Once I put this dress on, I knew right away that this was my dress! We went ahead and went to our second appointment that day to make sure there was not another dress out there for me. After trying on several other dresses, I knew that the beaded dress my sister had picked out was the perfect dress for me!
Our food from Top Tier catering was phenomenal! When the guests arrived, they were greeted with shrimp shooters and “His and Her” cocktails. We had a dinner buffet that included prime rib, turkey, chicken, a quesadilla bar, macaroni and mashed potato bar, and other stations. We also had a chicken and waffle station towards the end of the night for a late night snack! Marla Felton did an excellent job on my bridal cake. I chose a six tier vanilla vodka cream flavor while Jared chose a chocolate flavored cake decorated as a Lay’s potato chip bag with several cup cakes around the cake. The cakes were fantastic!
T H E F LO W E R S For my flowers, I chose pink and purple hydrangeas. At the church I had mainly white flowers with some light purple added in. My bridesmaid’s bouquets were white like mine but a little smaller, and for my maid of honor’s bouquet, I added in some purple to match their dresses and to make them stand out a little more! Each table at the reception had an arrangement with a mixture of pink and purple hydrangeas. All of the flowers were well put together!
B E S T A DV I C E I would tell couples who are currently planning a wedding to not stress about the little details. I was that person who stressed about the little things! The wedding day goes by so fast that there is no time to think about anything. The day is about you, so enjoy every minute of it! The wedding day will happen no matter what and will be the happiest day of your life!
B I G G E S T S P L U RG E The one thing I am most happy I splurged on was the flowers. I have always been a flower person, and so ever since I started planning this wedding I knew I wanted lots of flowers. Lou Dee Floral did an amazing job of making sure the ceremony and reception look gorgeous!
FAVO R I T E M O M E N T My favorite part of the wedding was when Jared and his groomsmen surprised me with a funny choreographed dance at the reception!
FUTURE We will be living in Lubbock for at least another year. I will graduate with my masters in May 2015. Jared is applying for Medical School. As of now we will enjoy life as a married couple!

Like a marriage, cowboy boots are made to last. With age, the leather softens and stretches to form to your foot. There are many colors and styles to choose from – brown squared toed boots with red leather tops, black pointed toe boots with purple and orange stitching. There is bound to be a style that fits your groom’s fancy.

A necktie is one opportunity to add flair to a groom’s ensemble with the many patterns and colors available, so he stands out at the end of the isle. Bowties and neckties both add whimsical, sophisticated touches to southern grooms, and the possibilities of patterns and colors for ties are endless to accent the boutonnieres or bride’s bouquet. For a hipster look, check out the Two Guy’s Bowtie Company from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who has branched out from the classic bowtie crating this men’s accessory out of wood.

What looks sharper on a man than a cowboy hat? Cowboy hats can be personalized with unique details, such as hatbands or unique creases. Straw hats look great in a summer wedding, and felt hats top off a western winter wedding. Any time of the year a hat will keep the sun off the groom’s back in an outdoor venue. And your own George Strait will be waiting for you at the altar!

Whether etched with a simple design or decorated with “Grand Champion Steer,” belt buckles showcase craftsmanship of an artisan or even accomplishments of the groom. Details on belt buckles are intricate and beautiful because of the steady hands that made them. The rings are typically a focus of a wedding, but belt buckles are definitely accessories that add some sheen to the ceremony.

Pocket squares might come in handy when the West Texas dust tickles your groom’s nose, but are also a memento of his wedding day. Many patterns are available, like paisley or floral, to match the wedding’s color palette and theme. The bride can stitch a sweet message onto the pocket square, too, as a reminder of how much she loved him on their special day.

As the groom walks down the aisle after the ceremony and dances the night away, his socks might peek out from underneath his pants – another opportunity for a pop of color. Black, navy, or kaki socks are a clean look, but why not mix it up with bright red, stripes, or polka dots? Fun socks are just another statement for great wedding photographs and an outstanding wedding day.

Boutonnieres add a unique detail to the groom’s getup. A cluster of old broaches, a cotton boll, or a pop of color from a flower are a fun way to tie together the wedding party and express the personality of the bride and groom. Details like boutonnieres make the wedding memorable for the wedding party and guests. The flowers can also be dried as a keepsake for years after.

TO DANCE
Although some couples don’t like to have dancing at the wedding reception, we see dancing as a great way to entertain your guests. The great thing about dancing is that it is a great way to liven up that atmosphere, and it is always optional. Guests never have to feel pressured to participate. If you are going to do dancing at a Texas wedding, consider these steps we recommend!

Everyone loves group dances because, more often than not, everyone knows the motions! Group dances like the YMCA, the Macarena, and the Chicken Dance are all simple dances that allow people to get up, let loose, and have a good time. Although the dances may sometimes seem silly, they are entertaining for both the people dancing and for those just watch.

The great thing about line dances is, as long as one person knows the moves, everyone else can pick up on how to do it! Popular line dances from years past include the Electric Slide and the Hustle, which some of you may be familiar with. In more recent years, newer line dances have evolved, such as the Cha Cha Slide, the Cupid Shuffle, and specific to Texas, the Copperhead Road line dance. If you haven’t heard of them, maybe it’s time to do some research and put on your dancing shoes!

TEXAS TWO-STEP
S LO W DA N C E
Slow dancing is the perfect choice for special dances such as the couple’s first dance, the father/daughter dance and the married couples’ dance. It is also a very simple dance that any and all of your guests can have fun with! You can even consider turning a two-step or a waltz into a slow dance if the tempo of the song is right.
There is a reason this dance is called “the Texas two-step, and that’s because Texans do it best! Whether you like this three count rhythm dance fast or slow, most everyone does the two-step with his or her own flare added to the steps. This is one of the most popular dances among Texans and is guaranteed to have your guests out of their seats and on the dance floor!

If you are familiar with the Cotton-Eyed Joe, then you know it rides the line between a partner dance, a line dance, and a group dance. We LOVE the Cotton Eyed Joe because, although it is not a Texas specific dance, most of us who are from Texas remember dancing to the Cotton-Eyed Joe since we were young. Nothing is more entertaining than putting on your boots and attempting to keep up with the fast paced tempo in a long line of friends!

THE BEGINNING We grew up together, but my first crush on him was in the fifth grade! I couldn’t dare admit it having a crush on him, because boys still had cooties at that age. In the 10th grade, I walked into Spanish class and my heart leaped when he was sitting at the desk. I tried to act cool and went and sat by him. We started dating March of our 10th grade year. Nine years, two months, and 19 days later we said, “I Do.” Every day I fall more in love with him than the day before.
T H E P RO P O S A L On October 26, we were getting ready to celebrate my mother’s birthday. I had attended a good friend’s wedding shower that day and had been asked several times when it would be my day. That question was common after dating for as long as we had, so it didn’t phase me. I simply smiled and said, “Whenever he is ready, because it’s all in God’s timing.” Little did I know, later that evening my dad would ask me to go get a bag of ice for the birthday party. As I walked outside, my mom and dad were there with the keys to the truck, an envelope in hand, and tears streaming down their faces. I looked at the envelope and saw Jamie’s handwriting. My parents kissed me and told me they loved me. I read the letter and followed the clue to the next spot. In the letter, Jamie wrote out what love was to him. At each spot, a family member gave me another letter. Each spot had a special meaning to us: the place he asked me out, our favorite place to eat in town, the place we went to high school, where we would go to sit and talk on summer nights, and lastly the place he told me he first loved me. As I pulled up back to the house for my final letter, there was Jamie standing under the tree where he first told me he loved me! I stepped out of the truck, he said the sweetest words, then asked me the long awaited question. With a joyful heart I answered, and all our family came out to celebrate with us! That night I realized how perfect God’s timing is.
THE DRESS Since we dated longer then some marriages last, it was easy for me to go and make my dream wedding. However, I wanted the excitement to be there when we finally got engaged. I never looked at a dress, color, flower, or wedding magazine. So when the time came to look for the dress, I was full of butterflies! I came across a dress on Pinterest, because Pinterest is the new Google for women! I found “the dress,” but of course, it didn’t have a link, just an image. Finally after searching high and low, I tracked the dress down in Plano, Texas. I called to make sure they had the dress and booked my appointment. When my appointment came I could hardly stand it! I tried the dress on and fell in love, but I felt like I needed to try on others. Ultimately we came back to the first dress, and I just couldn’t stop smiling in it! I LOVED it….and I knew Jamie would love it, too! The look on my mom’s face was the official answer. In her eyes I could see how proud she was of me and the woman I had become. Little did she know it was just a reflection of all that she had taught me. FAVO R I T E M O M E N T One of my favorite moments was the night before the wedding. I went back to the reception to look at everything all decorated, and it was perfect! Throughout the engagement, I always told myself, “Don’t lose sight of why you are marrying Jamie. Don’t get caught up in the details. They don’t matter.” I wanted our wedding to honor God and the commitment we were making to be the focus. Everything else just fell into place, and I couldn’t be happier! Getting to walk down the aisle to Jamie was probably my most favorite thing. I had my dad holding my hand and walking to Jamie…simply perfect!

FA M I LY T R A D I T I O N S We didn’t really do any traditions, but we did incorporate a prayer of blessing at the ceremony. Each person was given a key at the ceremony. We asked that each of them pray for us and the future of our marriage. We gathered the keys at the end of the service. The keys are now displayed in our house as a reminder of all the people who love and supported us on our special day.
FOOD When guest arrived, we had peanuts and popcorn with bottled soda for them to enjoy! We also had several yard games for them to play while they waited! For the meal, we had chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken, baked potato, salad, corn, and biscuits. We had sweet tea to fill a mason jar! For desert, the wedding cake was classic wedding cake and snickerdoodle cake with butter cream frosting and groom’s cake was lemon pound cake. We also had mini apple and peach pies along with F LO W E R S I LOVE flowers, but I know very little about chocolate chip pound cake! them! Marsha Jordan from Colorado Floral & Gifts was able to put together beautiful flower arrangements. She worked so hard to find the perfect flowers to go together. My one request was peonies, and she was able to have the most beautiful peonies! The bouquet included: peonies, hydrangea, dusty miller, billy balls, mini calla lilies, babies breath, stock, ranunculus, garden roses, and a few others I can’t recall. B I G G E S T S P L U RG E The photographers! They were AMAZING! They captured so many little things that we didn’t get to see. Sara & Rocky Photography also helped make our day so special to us. FAVO R I T E D E TA I L S For the reception, I loved how the reception was all the little things I love: screen doors, stained glass, vintage plates and flatware, mason jars, calico print napkins, and burlap and lace. The lights and doors were a special touch. Of course the flowers fit right in. Just looking at the reception and knowing that it was made with love and decorated by family and friends made it that much more special! B E S T A DV I C E Relax! Griffin’s close up is proof that pops of color are beautiful! Brides shouldn’t be scared of being bold on their special day. Bright pink lipstick or yellow roses are just two examples of all the ways you can add some dimension to your look. Lipstick is an amazing way to change up your look — the slightest change in color can instantly take your sophistication to the next level.
The only way to describe this look is edgy elegance. The lacey V-neck is daring while the wide straps and sheer organza maintain the classiness and romance found in traditional gowns. Patrick and I met in May of 2007 in Lubbock while he was attending Texas Tech, and I was at Baylor. We kept in touch for several years, but it wasn't until I was moving to Houston that we really reconnected. A week after I moved to Houston, he invited me out for drinks on my birthday, and then about a week later, he invited me to go sailing with him and couple mutual friends that we had. We had such a great time and have been together ever since.

I AM MY
T H E P RO P O S A L
Several weeks before the day, Patrick told me his company had bought a table at a charity event, and we needed to attend. We arrived early to the dinner so Patrick suggested we go to the top of the San Jacinto Monument to kill time. We walked up to the ticket desk, and they told us they were closed, but then quickly changed their minds after Patrick spoke with them. We got to the top of the monument, and I walked to the front window. I look down towards the Battleship Texas and immediately begin to wonder how this charity event is going to take place. I begin to think out loud to Patrick and that is when he turned me around and asked me to marry him! It was perfect! We spent a few more minutes up there enjoying the moment and taking pictures with the photographer he had hired to capture the proposal. As we were descending,
I asked Patrick if anyone else knew of his plan and as the elevator doors open he said “No, except for all of these people!” and there stood about 20 of our closest friends in the lobby of the monument to greet us. As we got in the car to leave, Patrick told me there were no more surprises. We were going to have a special dinner just the two of us and asked that I wait to call any family until after our dinner. I agreed. We arrived at dinner and were led to the private room where we were going to dine. As the doors opened, there was cheering and both of our families had come in to celebrate with us. It was such surprise; I couldn’t believe it! I remember turning to Patrick and saying, “Stop lying to me!” He promised there were no more lies, and he was done. Patrick planned everything to the minute, and it was perfect! He had been planning for months and kept a very good secret!

THE DRESS
The day before my mom came in town, I went to Mia Bridal with a friend to try on a dress I had seen online. They didn’t have it but encouraged me to try on several other dresses. There was a dress in the window I had my eye on the entire time, and I decided to put it on. I tried it on and knew that was THE dress. I loved it! My mom came in that weekend. We went back to the boutique to try it on again and my mom agreed. My mom cried both times she saw me put it on. We celebrated with a glass of champagne. The dress was completely different than the dress I had imagined, but it was perfect.

My theme was classic with a modern twist and I wanted something that reflected that but was also airy and fun. I had found a picture on Pinterest that was similar to what I had envisioned and showed it to College Flowers, so they could see my vision. It was a mix of greens, pinks, purples, and a hint of white.
FAVO R I T E M O M E N T
One of our favorite moments of the wedding was the last dance. At the end of the wedding reception, everyone cleared out of the ballroom. It was just the band, the photographers, and us. We got to do a last dance and stop and look around at what remained of our reception. It was a good time for us to reflect on the night and what had got us here. Then we went out to the crowd that was cheering us on to our future as we FAVO R I T E D E TA I L I had a live-event artist paint the first dance of left. my wedding reception. Susan Moss Cooper came from Dallas, and she began painting an T H E F I R S T LO O K outline of the reception a couple hours prior Yes, we decided to do a first look. I wanted to the reception starting and then continued more informal pictures with our wedding painting throughout the reception. I wanted party and family. I also thought it would be her to capture our first dance and wanted a good idea to calm our nerves the day of the certain family members displayed in the wedding and didn’t want to leave my guests portrait. She then took the painting back waiting at the reception if we went to an home to finish out details. It turned out just alternate location after the ceremony. Patrick perfect. SPEDICAL TIDBIT
My dad’s 50th Birthday was at midnight during the reception, so we had a surprise “Happy Birthday” sang to him by all the guests at the end of the night, followed by a balloon drop and mini chocolate covered ice cream cones for everyone.

My advice would be to enjoy every moment of planning. Take your time and enjoy each other. These moments go by so quickly.

gift socks
T
hese days, it seems like many modern couples are trying to add a little more whimsy to their weddings. I knew this would be the case when my friend asked me to be a bridesmaid for her wedding. The bride and groom wanted to have a light and fun wedding and thought that the best way to portray this feeling was to incorporate a bounce house! That’s right, a bounce house!
What you'll need: 1. SOCKS (THE MORE COLORFUL THE BETTER 2. RIBBON (OPTIONAL)
When drumming up the ideas of a cool, unique wedding favor the choice seemed obvious--SOCKS! We knew many people would not be expecting a bounce house at a wedding and thought this would be an amusing and useful gift for all of the guests. Of course, if you don’t have a bounce house at your wedding, this is still a great way to package a small “in case you get cold feet” gift for your groom! Rather than just putting a stack of socks next to the bounce house, we decided to specially package each one, and the results were adorable! Try these out, and afterward you will certainly be tempted to just package your regular ol’ socks like this every day!

DIY
For this DIY, I used a women’s ankle sock, but you can do this with a (men’s or women’s) crew sock. Pull one sock inside out (it doesn’t matter which one). Now, simply stuff the inside-out sock into the other.Beginning from the ankle of the sock, begin rolling the sock outward. Roll until you reach the bottom (toes portion). This will start to give the pair a donut-like appearance. A small portion may still be sticking out, but you can just stuff it into the center. Now, package the socks whichever way you want. I made a simple “shoetie” bow (it may be kind of fun to package these with shoelaces instead of ribbon, but remember that the tails of the shoelaces may be too long if that is the route you choose to take). Voila!

LET THEM EAT CAKE!
No one can resist a good cake! Well, how about a cake-tasting competition? June 1 marked The Wedding Connection Magazine’s first annual Cake-Off. In an effort to give brides and their families a chance to find the perfect cake for their big day, our staff reached out to local bakeries that specialized in all different flavors and types of cakes. The event brought in ten bakeries from the surrounding areas, all competing for the sought-after title of “Best Tasting Cake in West Texas.”

Our winner was none other than the scrumptious Simply Decadent Bakery from Lubbock. Voters fell in love with the bakery’s Italian cream flavored cake, which even came with optional fruit or chocolate for added deliciousness. Yum! Small touches like additional toppings made Simply Decadent stand out at the event as they went above and beyond to create perfection. The bakery is owned and operated by Krista Bailey, who has been serving up sweet treats to the Lubbock community for two years. Simply Decadent offers a unique experience for every sweet tooth. They are well known, not only for their tasty treats, but also the way in which they create the bakery’s elegant desserts. Everything in the bakery is fresh and completely made from scratch with a family friendly touch. While we couldn’t score any secret recipes from Krista, she did inform us that each of their recipes starts with flour, butter, eggs and sugar. Sounds like a recipe for success! One thing Simply Decadent does to make them stand out is creating an Italian buttercream. Italian buttercream is made with 100 percent butter instead of shortening. In fact, Simply Decadent is a butter-only bakery! You won’t find any hydrogenated oils or preservatives there. The reason Krista and her intimate group of staff place so much emphasis on the purity of their ingredients is not difficult to understand. Whether you’re enjoying a slice of lemon lavender cake or a decadent chocolate brownie with goat cheese and raspberry chipotle sauce, you can taste the authenticity and freshness of Simply Decadent’s desserts. What exactly does this delightful shop of sweets create? Basically, anything their heart desires! The menu changes throughout the year depending on availability of specific ingredients, and special orders are always accepted as long as the components of the recipe are in season, so you know you’re eating high quality food.
Often times, bakeries focus on specialty desserts, such as cakes, cupcakes or cookies, but Simply Decadent serves a vast variety of desserts to guests. Expect to discover a medley of brownies, truffles, soufflés, macaroons and cheesecakes, in addition to all the delicious cakes! Krista offers classic cake flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla and red velvet, but she also puts a twist on traditional flavors with cakes like lemon lavender, champagne and almond amaretto. Simply Decadent has thirteen indulgent cakes to choose from, and eleven savory fillings for limitless combinations. Imagine all the sweet and savory smells walking into Simply Decadent. As if the smell of cake and cookies isn’t enough, Simply Decadent regularly serves an array of freshly baked bread and warm J&B coffee to enjoy at the bakery or to purchase in bulk amounts to take home. Simply Decadent is determined to be involved with other businesses in the Lubbock area and their clients. The bakery also has an ongoing contest for the locals called “Let Them Eat Cake.” All you have to do is tell the bakery about someone who deserves a cake by the 10th of August, November, February or May, and the bakery will choose three finalists whose stories will be posted on Facebook. The story with the most likes wins a $200-minimum customized cake. Simply Decadent truly lives up to their name in every way possible. The bakery’s desserts and breads are especially delicious, but their hospitality and kindness are unlisted ingredients guaranteed to satisfy. Next time you are in Lubbock, make your way to 82nd street and grab a slice of heaven from the bakery that serves up the “Best Tasting Cake in West Texas!”

Nothing says “Texas” better than arriving in a pickup truck. We love the personal shoe-polished sayings; they are so sweet! Tying empty cans to ropes attached to the bed of the truck is another fun Texas tradition brides and grooms enjoy! The sound of cans hitting one another provides a classic play on wedding bells to announce the newly married couple to the world.

This horse-drawn buggy is simply precious. Arriving in a carriage at your reception gives off a classic western vibe with a hint of Cinderella mixed in! We loved the sign attached to the buggy reading “Just Hitched.” The idea is so adorable, and your guests are sure to get a kick out of it!

How perfect is this couple sitting high up in a big green tractor? Everything about it screams Texas! For a couple who wants to have fun with their guests, this is definitely an ideal entrance. ORGANIZED WITH
DOTTED i’s & CROSSED T’s I’ve always been obsessed with office supplies being the organization freak that I am! Color coding, to-do lists, and more importantly, crossing items off my to-do list are things I love. After all, as an editor of this fabulous wedding magazine, I have to stay organized! I have tried all sorts of planners, everything from the big fancy ones that require their own bag to carry around to just the calendar on my iPhone. The problem is that electronically crossing off an item on my to do list just is not the same as crossing it off on paper. May Designs was kind enough to offer our office a few planners to keep everyone structured. I could not wait to dive into my glorious May Design planner.
I just love and adore my planner. I can toss it in my purse and stay organized on the go. I can list the items I need to buy at the grocery store this week. There is room to plan my week on the left hand side and categories to write to do lists on the right. Our entire staff is becoming obsessed with these May Designs! You can customize the outside of your planner. Mine has a lovely “A” on the cover. I have never been big on monogramming, but I do love the monogram on my planner. It also ensures my planner does not get mixed up with the rest of our lovely editorial staff’s May Designs!
