What is the sweetest wedding moment you’ve ever witnessed?

GET INVOLVED!

Most of the time I am moved at the very moment that the Father (or escort) of the Bride actually gives the bride’s hand to the groom signifying his blessing on the new union. - Melody Dawes

FAMILY-STYLE SEATING

If you love sitting at a long table for Thanksgiving dinner, incorporate that family-style seating into your wedding day. Everyone can feel like family as they come together to celebrate.

TASTING STATIONS

12

Who loves sampling food? Set up a tasting station for yummy entertainment between the wedding ceremony and dinner. Chocolate and cheese fondue – oh my! You could even do different flavors of buffalo wings with sauces, stuffed meatballs, or sushi. THE WEDDING CONNECTION

FRAMED SEATING CHARTS

Add decoration however you can! Framed seating charts can add some fancy to something ordinary. Write out your guests’ names in calligraphy and pick up a vintage frame from an antique store -- perfect!

COPPER

Silver and gold are definitely classics, but you might be seeing a lot more copper, too. Copper adds a vintage feel to wedding accents, and looks great on embossed invitations, dresses, and even wedding cakes.

INDUSTRIAL THEMES

The femininity of a wedding dress really stands out in an industrial setting. A brewery, winery, and other industrialstyle venue are emerging as places to host the big day. Photo by Beadz 2 Pleaz

GUEST LOUNGE AREAS

Talking over the length of a table can sometimes be distracting. Guest lounge areas create an intimate atmosphere for a few people to sit and talk. A wooden bench with a couple fluffy pillows sounds good! THEWCMAG.COM

A HASHTAG IS AN INCREDIBLY EASY WAY TO DOCUMENT AND ORGANIZE SOCIAL MEDIA RELATING TO THE WEDDING DAY. COMING UP WITH THE HASHTAG? THAT IS DEFINITELY THE MOST DIFFICULT PART. Photo by Breetique

Mark Your Memories

WITH A HASHTAG

by Nicole Molter

A hashtag is an incredibly easy way to document and organize social media relating to the wedding day. Coming up with the hashtag? That is definitely the most difficult part. The hashtag should be completely original, so your wedding photos don’t get mixed up with someone else’s. Hashtag generators are available online, but utilizing your brand of creativity can be loads of fun. Couples whose last name is already unique probably have an easier time figuring out an exclusive hashtag. But, for those with more common names, try combining your first names like Brangelina (Remember Brad and Angelina?). Creating a play on words makes a cutesie

14

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

hashtag. For example, the couple’s last name is Howe so #howesweetloveis. Keep plenty of reminders around for your guests. DIY signs or listing the tag in the wedding program are simple reminders and encourage guests to keep the tags coming. Also, your guests will love you if it’s short enough to easily type in on social media. Want to utilize your hashtag to the fullest? Start tagging after your engagement announcement. This small tip will keep your friends and loved ones keeping up with you all the way through your ceremony and reception. #gottaloveahashtag

Pearls

A bunch of pearls in a bouquet is really elegant. This style of bouquet would add just enough interest without being too distracting from the wedding dress.

Paper

What flowers never die? Paper flowers! Origami flowers or big paper flowers make fascinating bouquets, and will be as beautiful in a shadow box ten years from now as they were on your wedding day. You could even use butterfly cutouts to add more interest.

Succulents

If you want to stick with plants for your bouquet, succulents are a neat option. Because they are related to the cactus, succulents don’t wilt as quickly as flowers. Great for preparation in advance!

Vintage knobs Vintage knobs have artistic touches that are unique and beautiful. They can be found at junk stores or garage sales. You never know what you might find to include in a bouquet!

7 FOR THOSE IN HEAVEN by Nicole Molter

SOMETIMES THE BRIDE OR GROOM’S MOST LOVED ONES ARE THOSE YOU HAVE PASSED AWAY. GRANDPARENTS, PARENTS, SIBLINGS, OR DEAR FRIENDS CAN ALL BE HONORED AND HAVE A SYMBOLIC PRESENCE ON THE WEDDING DAY.

1. Collect treasured photos of those who have passed and set up a display with a favorite quote or song. These can be organized in an antique window, on a clothesline, or in individual frames just to name a few ideas.

2. A neat idea is tying small photo charms into the bride’s 5. Making a monetary gift in the name of a past loved one bouquet or into the groom’s boutonniere. As the bride walks down the aisle or the groom pins on his boutonniere, loved ones are displayed close to the heart.

3. To honor someone who has passed away, his or her

wedding ring could be used. The ring could be worn singularly or with the a new original ring for the ceremony.

is another great way to honor their life. This way their name can live on in the charity of the donation.

6. Reserve a seat for a lost loved one and place a single

flower on their seat. A favorite color flower could be used. Another option is to place a prized possession on his or her chair such as a military hat or emblem.

4. Heirlooms are uniquely special to include in a wedding 7. Fabric from a piece of clothing can be used to fulfill the ceremony and are a great way to honor past family members. Prayer books, family Bibles, jewelry, or a wedding veil are a few items commonly used.

“something borrowed” or “something blue.” The fabric can be sewn into the bride’s dress or even worn by the groom.

Your Very Own

RING BEARER by Nicole Molter LOOKING FOR CUTE? YOUR RING BEARER CAN TAKE ON THAT ROLE FOR YOU! HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO MAKE THE LITTLE MAN A STAR OF THE SHOW.

The ring pillow tradition is said to originate from Egypt, but today you can get creative as long as the rings make it down the aisle. Any young boy gets a kick out of dressing up in a costume. One option is to let him pick out who he wants to be for the wedding. If the wedding theme is western, let him dress up like a cowboy and deliver the rings on a stick horse.

A ring bearer could also carry a sign with the rings tied on to it. The sign might read something like, “Here comes your girl! Or even try some chalk paint to decorate and write whatever you would like. Dr. Seuss, nursery rhymes, or other picture books could also work as a transport for the rings. Let the ring bearer pick out one of his favorites as an opportunity to show his personality as he parades to the altar. After all, you not only want cute.... you want a contented and happy ring bearer ready to do his bidding.

Dress Up Your Vows

by Nicole Molter

VOWS ARE A STAPLE PART OF THE WEDDING CEREMONY AND ARE A SPECIAL TIME BETWEEN YOU AND THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE. THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY TO WRITE YOUR VOWS, BECAUSE COUPLES CHOOSE TO SHARE THEIR FEELINGS IN DIFFERENT WAYS. PUTTING FEELINGS INTO WORDS GIVES THEM BODY AND MAKES THEM EVERLASTING.

Be relaxed at the time you start

writing down your thoughts. Grab a cup of hot tea, and put on your favorite sweat pants if you need to. Zero in on putting your love into words in the best way possible. Talk about the length of the vows. If yours are going to be about a page long, the other vows should probably be about the same length. You can talk about this while still keeping the content a surprise! Take your time writing and developing your ideas. It’s okay to take weeks even months to plan; this is a serious deal! You might wake up in the middle of the night and think of something

26

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

you want to include or jot something down on your lunch break at work. Don’t fret about what your parents might want you to say or what would appeal to anyone else. Vows are meant for a couple to tune into each other and profess their love deeply from their hearts. Some couples best express themselves through humor. In the vows, share a funny memory or say something like, “I promise to eat a sandwich before I yell at you. I know I’m cranky when I get hungry.” Need some perspective? There are so many examples out there of vows, so take a look at a few of them to see

what you enjoy and dislike to help you out. Did high school speech class make you nervous? (Yeah) Practice speaking to ease any anxiety you might have. Decide if you’re going to memorize your vows or use your notes. Give a copy to your officiate, even if you decide to memorize them, just in case. One less thing to worry about! With all the hard work you put into composing your vows, take them on your honeymoon to read to each other again! You could even read them every year on your anniversary as a reminder of how much y’all loved each other they day you said, “I do.”

Setting the

Mood Down the Aisle THE. AISLE

by Nicole Molter

Yes. The aisle indeed.

The aisle is the where the bride makes her grand appearance before she says, “I do.” This is your opportunity to set the stage, so to speak. Depending on the theme and colors of the wedding, the possibilities are many—even endless.

NATURAL MATERIALS

For an outdoor wedding, using natural materials always works perfectly. Place a small tree stump at the end of each row with flowers in a vase or a candle on top – easy! You could also sprinkle flower petals or fall leaves down the aisle. Want to stand out on this? Create your own design with them.

ANTERNS/CANDLES

Antique lanterns or candles create a gorgeous ambiance especially for a wedding. Line up the lights along the aisle and you will surely shine as you make your way to the front. All you have to do is tie a little ribbon or burlap to add more color and interest.

TULLE

Gathering and draping tulle from seat to seat down the aisle always creates a pretty cloud-like scene. Twinkle lights could even be folded into the tulle to add subtle shimmer. Vases/Glass jars/Wine bottles with Flowers Collect vases, glass jars, or wine bottles in the months leading up to the wedding. These can be lined up along the seating and filled with pebbles and flowers. Ribbon or raffia would certainly dress them up just a bit more.

SEASONAL WREATHS

Decorate small wreaths to fit the theme of the wedding and time of year. Flowers for an outdoor wedding in spring or summer, orange leaves in the fall with turquoise ribbon, or red berries and evergreen branches for winter would add just the right touch!

HERE COMES

THE BRIDE

by Nicole Molter

CONSIDER THIS YOUR PRIMER ON THE PROCESSIONAL AND RECESSIONAL. DON’T KNOW WHAT THOSE ARE? YOU HAVE TURNED TO THE RIGHT PAGE.

Processional

The processional is typically softer music played as the bride makes her entrance to the ceremony and down the aisle. Piano or organ music is more traditional. “Here comes the Bride” and Canon in D Major are popular choices, and are both beautiful. Some brides choose modern music. “Marry Me” by Train or “God Gave Me You” by Blake Shelton are two songs that have been used. Pick your favorite!

Recessional

The recessional is more upbeat music played at the end of the service as the newlyweds, bridesmaids, and groomsmen exit. “Sugar” by Maroon 5 or “Love Never Felt So Good” by Michael Jackson featuring Justin Timberlake are a couple choices you can definitely dance to!

More Wedding.....Less $ by Nicole Molter

THE MONEY DILEMMA. YES, IT CAN BE A DILEMMA. GOOD NEWS! THERE ARE WAYS TO CUT COSTS OF A WEDDING WHILE STILL ACHIEVING WHAT YOU WANT. THE RECEPTION CAN BECOME ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE PARTS OF THE WEDDING. HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO LEAVE A LITTLE MORE MONEY IN YOUR POCKETS.

Decorations are great, but they

don’t have to be over the top when considering expense. There are so many DIY projects available in magazines and on the web (check out the blog at thewcmag.com). The tradeoff might be a little more work, but your wallet will thank you. Also, if you really, really want fresh flowers, then decorate with flowers that are in-season. The availability of certain types could affect the cost. Serve snacks and cocktails instead of a full meal. Guests can sample a variety of food, and finger foods typically don’t bust your budget. Your local deli might have a good deal on fruit and

34

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

veggie trays, cheese and crackers, and small sandwiches. When considering a caterer, ask them if they offer half-price meals for kiddos. This can definitely cut cost of food and amounts that might go to waste. Another important food to keep in mind is the cake. Specialty shops are guaranteed to give you a beautiful wedding cake, but could also rack up a big bill. Don’t rule out your local grocery store when entrusting someone to bake your cake. Alcohol is another expense, but it does not have to be as big as you think. You can limit the amount of booze avail-

able at the reception. Liquor is more costly, so you could give your guests the choice between wine and beer instead. Purchasing all the alcohol yourself can also be cheaper than having a service bring it in and serve it. Make sure the venue allows alcohol as well. Should you have a DJ or live music? DJs are typically cheaper than hiring a band, but you can always bargain with them and limit the hours they play. Having neither is also an option. Set up a playlist of all your favorite songs and get the party started! You will enjoy that party much more knowing you didn’t break your bank.

Must-have

Wedding Photography by Nicole Molter

The most beautiful characteristic of photographers is their unique creativity in capturing and freezing special moments in photos.

of the bride and groom, and family. There is also many firsts that need the camera’s attention – the first time the father sees his daughter, first kiss, first dance, the first time the groom sees his bride.

have a unique boutonniere or special cufflinks. Don’t forget to have pictures taken of the rings! Photos of the couple getting ready for the ceremony are a great time to get these types of photos done.

SO MUCH SHOULD BE RECORDED DURING A WEDDING DAY, BUT THE BRIDE AND GROOM DON’T WANT TO KEEP THEIR GUESTS WAITING TO WISH THEM CONGRATULATIONS FOR TOO LONG. COMING UP WITH A LIST OF PHOTOS YOU WANT IS A GREAT WAY TO EFFICIENTLY GET WHAT YOU WANT FROM YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER.

Tell the photographer to capture as many details as possible. The decorations, wedding invitations, weather, signature drinks, and food may seem like insignificant details, but twenty years from now the couple will want a reminder of those little things.

All the photos don’t have to be serious. Have fun with your friends and family and capture that in silly photos! Take regular group photos and then mix it up with a silly picture.

Throughout the day, the photos

should be both posed and natural action shots. There are the obvious photos that should be captured.– the groomsmen, bridal party, portraits

36

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

Another group of photos that should be on the list is accessories. Have photos taken of the bride’s jewelry, shoes, bouquet, and anything else featured in her bridal look. Same goes for the groom; he might be wearing fun socks,

Taking the time for intimate photos in between the ceremony and reception is important for the newlywed couple. This is a great opportunity for the couple to show their love to the camera with sweet kisses, dancing, and close up shots of the two looking into each other’s eyes.

Switch Up

the Seating

by Nicole Molter

TRADITIONALLY, GUESTS WHO KNOW AND HAVE HAD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BRIDE OR GROOM SIT ON DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE AISLE DURING THE WEDDING CEREMONY. HOWEVER, IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, THE TREND HAS BEEN TO MIX THINGS UP A BIT.

Some people say, “Pick a seat, not a side. We’re all family once the knot is tied.” Nontraditional seating might be a better option for everyone gathering for the wedding. Here’s a helpful way to give an air of inclusion. Instead of rows split with the aisle down the middle, angle the chairs inward or curve in a half circle. Guests can get a better view of the action and may feel closer to what is going on. Another idea is to set up circles of chairs radiating from the where the marriage will take place. This way the bride and groom are literally sur-

rounded by the ones they love, and guests will have an all-around view of the ceremony. Seating guests at the same tables for the wedding as the reception will make the transition from one to the other incredibly easy. Be sure to leave enough room for the dance floor! Finding enough seating can sometimes be a challenge. Hay bales covered with blankets, benches with pillows, church pews, mismatched chairs, or lawn chairs are a few options. Photo by All My Goodness

Where Would You Like

To Sit? by Nicole Molter WITH WEDDING CEREMONY SEATING, THE PRIORITY SHOULD BE HOW TO MAKE EVERYONE FIT COMFORTABLY AND STILL SEE THE CEREMONY. SEATING CAN BE ARRANGED IN HALF CIRCLES, ANGLED TOWARDS THE ALTAR, OR JUST IN ROWS WITH THE AISLE SPLITTING THE MIDDLE.

Assigning seats for the ceremony hopefully keeps cha-

os to a minimum. Have an escort show your guests where they should go. Be sure to keep like friends and family members in the same spot when arranging a seating chart. If you don’t assign seats, guests can choose where they would like to sit. Maybe certain guests prefer to be up front while others prefer to be by the back door. This allows for mingling between family or friends who may not know each other.

Assigning seats avoids awkward standing and the question of “Where do we sit?” You can’t please everyone but be sure to take into account families and friends you know would like to sit together. Seat assignments make pairing food with who ordered it easier. Have guests pick up an escort card at the door that will match with their seats at the numbered tables. Table assignments don’t involve all the tiny pieces of paper for individual seating assignments. Put up a poster or chalkboard with everyone’s name at a specific table. Guests will easily see where to see and can see who else is in attendance. THEWCMAG.COM

AN ARTISTIC

SentimenT

by Nicole Molter A surfacing trend is having an artist paint a scene from your wedding. The artist attends the event and watches the day unfold. The artist should arrive early to start getting to know the personalities of the people who will be in the painting. Tell them who you want to include as she works on the scene. Paintings are different than photography, because the artist can manipulate the image as he or she paints. Certain colors or details may stand out more. The people may look more romantic or graceful. A painting will also make a beautiful feature to hang in the home you create with your spouse.

Can Your Best Friend Be Ordained to Marry You? By Nicole Molter

The answer is “Yes.”

ALONG WITH PRIESTS, RABBIS, AND MINISTERS, CLOSE FRIENDS AND FAMILY CAN CONDUCT A LEGAL WEDDING CEREMONY. WEBSITES AND CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE TO CERTIFY ORDINATION. ALONG WITH THE ACTUAL ORDINATION, TIPS FOR PERFORMING THE CEREMONY ARE ALSO GIVEN SINCE MANY PEOPLE SEEKING THIS ARE LIKELY FIRST-TIMERS.

The officiate should provide a state marriage license and is responsible for sending it to the proper officials. He or she may be required to sign the license depending on the state, and is also required to have two witnesses sign as well (often the maid of honor and best man). A wedding certificate is a keepsake option if someone else will be handling the actual license, such as a justice of the peace.

Make sure whoever is performing the ceremony knows

the laws for your state because they often vary. The local county clerk will be able to tell you the rules for sure.

Make a plan with the person who will be conducting the ceremony. There are often seven parts – procession, invocation, declaration of intent, vows exchange, ring exchange, pronouncement and recession. Let them know for sure what you want, especially if this is his or her first time. A wedding rehearsal is also a good idea.

traditional Dinner or

Wedding Breakfast? by Nicole Molter

A wedding does not have to be the traditional format of a fancy dinner and a band unless that is your style. This is your day, your party. The reception can be whatever you want!

Breakfast receptions can be a lot of fun. A biscuit bar with flaky biscuits and different flavored jams, butter, and honey are the perfect morning comfort food. Waffles and pancakes with different toppings and syrups are another wonderful choice. Fresh fruit and bacon are two sides that go perfectly with any breakfast meal and are sure to put a smile on your guests’ faces. The marriage of barbecue and beer (root beer for the kiddos) is a perfect combo, so why not have this tasty pair at the wedding reception? Pick your favorite park to join family and friends in celebrating your new marriage with great food!

When catering is scheduled for a wedding, the company typically delivers before the reception. But, what if they delivered during the party and served pizza or Jimmy John’s sandwiches? Believe it or not, this can be done! Finger foods and cocktails are a less formal way to celebrate. Bite-sized portions can let your guests taste all your favorite foods. How about bite-sized grilled cheese, meatballs, chocolate-covered strawberries and donut holes? Yes! Thank you! If the two of you love tea, have a tea party reception. There are so many different flavors of tea, and interesting treats to pair with them. Cookies and finger sandwiches – yum! Cake and punch are a traditional pairing that is perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth. Punch is easy to make in quantity and is a delicious concoction to wash down wedding cake. B.Y.O.D. – bring your own dish! Have your guests bring their favorite dishes for everyone to sample in a potluck wedding reception. Most likely, Granny will bring your favorite cherry cobbler for dessert. Dive into a summer pool party to cool down following your wedding ceremony. Beach umbrellas, picnic blankets, and inner tubes are a great way to unwind and get some sun after all the prep for the big day. This is a great way to keep kids occupied, too!

create an intimate atmosphere, especially when the sun starts to set. Potted plants are another easy way to dress up a backyard and continue the wedding theme and colors into the reception. Small plants could even be guest favors when the night ends.

ments are a great way to keep the day shining even if rain is in the forecast. Clean up should be quick and easy. Set up large trashcans for guests to throw away their trash throughout the reception and use disposable paper

Seating is another easy fix. Folding chairs and tables or picnic tables can be rented, or you can use what you have for a mismatched whimsical setup. With a tablecloth, ribbon and an eye-catching centerpiece, the backyard reception is ready for guests! Yard games can be tons of fun for the young and young at heart. So, what makes for the perfect wedding? IS IT THE SETTING? MONTHS OF PLANNING? SELECTING THE RIGHT WEDDING PLANNER? MAYBE IT’S A LITTLE OF ALL OF THAT AND MORE AS EVIDENCED BY THE PERFECTLY GORGEOUS WEDDING OF AMANDA SHARBUTT AND JORDAN SPEARMAN. THIS OCCASION WAS TRULY A VISUAL DELIGHT FOR ALL ATTENDEES.

Every guest was welcomed with valet parking upon arrival to the lake house on Lake LBJ. The area dedicated to the wedding was easily noticable on the spacious grounds covering three acres, as there were two very large white tents. The ceremony setting was arranged in the larger tent 52

creating the perfect outdoor venue for nupitals to be exchanged. David Sharbutt escorted his daughter Amanda down the middle ailse from the back door of the house. The ceremony itself was led by David’s nephew who clearly communicated the love he had witnessed between the bride and groom while making everyone at ease with his planned humor. Even more clear was the obvious love being expressed between Jordan and Amanda. Jordan was obviously smitten with the beauty of his bride while Amanda was perfectly content to be admired. To the right of the tent, was a massive dance floor and a portable photo booth. A bar was also present to refresh guests throughout the evening.

Beautiful chandeliers were hanging from trees all over the yard creating a romantic and enchanting environment. Immediately after the ceremony, the bride and groom escaped to the balcony of the lakehouse for a few brief moments alone, photos and a private dinner. The guests below were well taken care of with a variety of delectable h’orderves and refreshing drinks until the reception officially began. Not only were the appetizers appreciated, but the wait staff was totally en pointe as every guest was served immediately and often. While the guests are being served perfectly, an almost invisible crew arrived to set up the reception tent with

tables, chairs, and absolutely gorgeous table settings. The guests never noticed as there were plenty of exquisite sofas casually placed in strategic areas for visiting and enjoying a delicious blackberry lemonade. A beautiful buffet awaited the approximately 300 guests and the wedding party. The buffet line was served by waiters making the process of filling each plate seamless and easy. The Father of the Bride greeted all the guests as well as welcoming the bride and groom into the reception. After the couple cut the cake, it was served in perfect proportions to each guest while seated at their tables. The bride and groom then enjoyed the photo booth then giving permission to their guests to also take advantage of

the fun. They then opened the dance floor with an incredible band playing a mix of contemporary and country music suitable for a beautful night at a Texas wedding.

Guests were entertained again by watching a lifetime of photos being played on an inflatable screen. The mixture of watching a relationship develop through pictures, the good dance music, and the enchantment of the evening was a perfect recipe for a beautiful wedding in May. Besides the very touching ceremony celebrating the union of this beautiful couple, the highlight of the evening was gathering around them, sending them off across the lake in a boat. THE WEDDING CONNECTION

Did the two of you decide on a “first look?” Some things we kept pretty traditional and decided on not doing a first look. But when it came time for the ceremony and I pulled up in the VW bus and the garden gates opened I could see a small tear drop coming from Nate’s eyes. Where did you find your dress? My mom and I decided to go to a few places in town and try on dresses before I invited my family and bridesmaids. We went to one shop and tried on many beautiful dresses, but none were the right ones for me. Then we went Bella’s Bridal and tried on tons more! It was there that I narrowed it down to 4 dresses, but had one specifically that I couldn’t get out of my head. A few weeks later I had 3 of my bridesmaids and my mom, Nana and Aunt come with me this time. I tried

them all on and each one they liked in a different way. Then, I saved the best for last! I tried on the strapless Maggie Sottero Britannia dress that was ivory lace and ombred to a light gold with a light gold under lay. It was beautiful and everyone loved it. I ordered the dress and it came just in time. What were your favorite details? I think my favorite detail was the photo booth that came with our wedding package and done by Shutter Shack. I know everyone at the wedding loved taking pictures and dressing up and playing with the different props. I also loved that they printed 2 copies right away and that one was for the guest and the other went in a scrapbook that Nate and I got to take home. Even the guests could automatically send the pictures to their e-mail or post them directly online. It was so much fun getting to do! Another favorite

detail for me was the VW Bus. VW Buses are my dream car, so it was so much fun getting to drive up in one and take pictures with it. It just made the wedding so special by having it! It was kindly provided to us by Stephanie at the Hippie House Boutique and we are so thankful she let us use it on our special day. Advice for planning the wedding and reception: Don’t procrastinate! Nate and I had a year and a half to plan, and I thought I had plenty of time. Make sure you try and do something every day, no matter how big or small. That way by the end you have everything pretty much worked out and can enjoy the week before the wedding.

Amanda & Bo What was your favorite party of your wedding day? When I was repeating my wedding vows, I completely blanked and could not remember what our officiate had just said, so I turned toward him and said, “Wait, what?!” The officiate thought I had changed my mind about that part of the vows! It definitely lightened the mood and everyone laughed. We could not stop laughing the rest of the ceremony. Was there any family traditions used in the ceremony or reception?

The shoes I wore for the ceremony have been worn by my older cousin and older sister. We each wore those shoes for all of our proms and continued the tradition with our weddings. They have held up through six proms and two weddings! Advice for planning the wedding and reception: Make sure you have things how YOU want them. Take suggestions from others, but stay true to your vision, and it will turn out perfectly and just how you imagined it!

Original Guest Book Ideas by Nicole Molter

62

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

What happens to the guest book after the wedding?

IT PROBABLY COLLECTS DUST IN A BOX. INCORPORATING YOUR GUESTS INTO A DISPLAY FOR YOUR NEW HOME OR HAVING THEM WRITE A PERSONAL LETTER WILL KEEP THEIR MEMORIES AND SIGNATURES ALIVE. HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING OPTIONS.

LETTERS OF ADVICE

Letters of advice are a sentimental way to record your guests. Anyone is sure to have something to say about loving each other and strengthening the new marriage. Rereading the letters over the years can be a simple reminder of the those who encouraged and taught you to love each other.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Having your guests share their own memories through a personal photo in a scrapbook-style guestbook could definitely be a lot of fun to cherish for years after the wedding. This creates a one-of-a-kind visual to show the personality of each guest that attended the wedding day.

RIVER ROCKS

Have each guest sign a river rock with a paint pen and put them all in a simple glass vase. If the rocks are large enough, a special saying or word of advice can be written on each one.

PAINT A PICTURE

A painting is another way to remember all of your guests. Purchase a large canvas and have each guest mark it with their thumbprint and sign their name with a fine point marker. You can even make a picture, such as a tree and use the fingerprints as the leaves.

Let’s Have a LITTLE FUN! ON THE WEDDING DAY, THERE ARE SOME WAITING POINTS FOR GUESTS – WAITING FOR EVERYONE TO ARRIVE AT THE RECEPTION THEN FOR THE BRIDE AND GROOM TO MAKE THEIR ENTRANCE. HAVE ACTIVITIES SET OUT AT THE TABLES TO ENGAGE CONVERSATION AND LAUGHS.

ICEBREAKERS

Silliness brings people together. Set up icebreaker questions in small buckets or jars. Have everyone close their eyes and draw a question from the jar. “If you were a dinosaur, what kind would you be?” – see just how silly it gets!

CARD GAMES

There are endless possibilities in a deck of cards. Guests can play their favorite games, such as solitaire or Go Fish. Instructions for new games could also be left on the tables like Speed or 31. No 52 card pick up!

NAME THEIR FUTURE KIDS

Activity sheets are available to print for free online. One fun activity is to name the couple’s future children. List several different names, and you never know, you might be giving them some good ideas!

GUEST MAD LIBS

Mad Libs are another game sure to get chuckles out of each table. Fill in the topics on one side then those random words complete a story on the other side. Some of the sentences end up super silly!

CAMERA EYE SPY GAME

Put a camera and list of people, objects, and actions to “eye spy.” Not only is this fun, but the bride and groom will get so many more awesome pictures to document their wedding day.

TRIANGLE EG GAME

Cracker Barrel has a game with wooden triangles and pegs stuck into them. The goal is to jump over the pegs like checkers and eliminate the pegs down to one. This is sure to keep wedding guests occupied, and each game can be found for one to four dollars. Never has a triangle been so puzzling.

Puzzling

napkins by Nicole Molter A NAPKIN TYPICALLY HAS ONE FUNCTION, RIGHT? – TO CLEAN UP A MESS. YOUR RECEPTION NAPKINS JUST WENT UP A NOTCH. Add another angle to the table setting by printing word puzzles or searches onto your napkins. You could even print a bingo game or an “I spy” page and use M&M’s to mark off the list. And of course, all of the words or clues are related to the wedding. Use words that relate to the wedding day – diamond, flower girl, veil, groom. This will keep everyone in the spirit of celebrating the day and marriage. Keep the vocabulary simple enough for the range of ages in attendance. The little ones may even learn some new words! And the pens! Lay out different colored pens and your guests can make the games into a competition.

BOWLS OF CANDY

Satisfy your guests’ sweet cravings with a candy centerpiece. Bowls of M&M’s would add color to the table and can also be specially ordered to color coordinate with your wedding. As a bonus, these candies can also be used to tide everyone over before the meal.

CRAYONS

Who says crayons are just for the kids’ table? A jar of crayons used as a simple centerpiece would keep guests of all ages entertained. Use a large sheet of white paper as a tablecloth and voila!

MENUS ON TINY EASELS

We all love food, and a common curiosity is what will be served at the reception. Menus displayed on tiny easels or even framed would be cute and satisfy the “need to know.”

FLOATING CANDLES

The thrill of fire. The calm of water. Fire and water are two opposites that can come together to create a gorgeous centerpiece. Floating candles are inexpensive. Place them in a bowl or vase with colored stones, marbles, or flowers for extra detail.

CHILDHOOD PHOTOS

Getting to know the bride and groom through photos incorporated into centerpieces can be such fun. Frame photos from each one’s childhood through the present to see how each has grown up until this day in time.

Bride and Groom Toast

by Nicole Molter

PUBLIC SPEAKING CAN BE OVERWHELMING, BUT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SPEECHES YOU MAY EVER GIVE IS A TOAST TO A NEWLYWED COUPLE. THE SPEECH SHOULD BE FILLED WITH LIGHTHEARTED MEMORIES AND WISHING THE NEW MARRIAGE WELL.

Include personal memories you have had with the bride or groom, and memories of them in their growing relationship. Silly stories and how you became friends are perfect sentiments to include. Of course, best wishes should be included in the toast. This couple’s new journey will appreciate any love and affection it can get from friends and family. Have a full glass for your toast! Champagne, wine, beer, sparkling grape juice or water – whatever suits your fancy. Your heart will be full, so your glass should be too! THEWCMAG.COM

THE BEAT OF YOUR HEART ON THE

First Dance

by Nicole Molter

Music is one of the many memorable qualities of a wedding.

THE SONG FOR THE FIRST DANCE WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR YEARS TO COME. THE RIGHT MUSIC NOT ONLY MAKES YOU WANT TO SING OR DANCE ALONG; IT CAN EVOKE THE BEST MEMORIES YOU HAVE SHARED AS A COUPLE.

Several factors can be taken into the options when choosing the song that is just right for the new Mr. and Mrs. You may have a song that is sentimental to your relationship, like a song you heard the first night you met or that your groom sang to cheer you up one day. A favorite song is also great for a couple’s first dance. It could be one the two of you heard at a concert together or a song the groom knew was

70

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

his bride’s favorite. Using that song would make it even more of a favorite with the wedding memories. The first dance could be slow or fast. A waltz or two-step is just as good as a swing dance or salsa. Some couples even choreograph their own dance for an unexpected surprise at the reception! This dance is meant to introduce you as a couple and will definitely show the beat of your heart for one another.

Remember to keep all the music classy, and pay attention to the lyrics. There will most likely be children present at the wedding, so leave the curse words or dirty dancing for another time. Also, some songs have a great beat, but might be talking about breakups or heartache. Include line dances, couples’ dances, and different genres to the playlist, so everyone wants to get out on the dance floor!

Setting Up a Snazzy Photo

Booth by Nicole Molter

Remember the photo booths at the mall or carnival? Bring one to the wedding! This is the absolute best opportunity for your guests to cut loose and be silly. Set up a camera with a timer or have a professional take them. An instant printer or Instagram hashtag would let your guests easily access the photos. Pick your favorite props, set up a jazzy background, and strike a pose!

72

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

Fun hats, signs, mustaches, wigs, large photo frames,

and so much more can be used as props for the wedding reception photo booth. The web offers printable stick props (for FREE!) to add even more fun for less expense. Another important part of a photo booth is the background. Some photography studios offer rental booths, but you can also make your own. Hang sequins, ribbons, doilies, garland, a cutout frame with the bride and groom’s name, or even cutout stars for an easy DIY booth. An archway is a super simple setting for photos. String balloons together, wrap flowers around an arbor, or put up twinkly lights. Keeping the photo setting simple and allowing your guests to have some fun is the way to go!

GET YOUR GUESTS TO BUST A MOVE

DANCING IS SO MUCH FUN! BUT, GETTING GUESTS TO BUST A MOVE CAN BE UNCOMFORTABLE FOR THEM. CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE THAT WILL GET GUESTS TO TAPPING THEIR TOES, AND THE TEMPTATION TO DANCE WILL BE IRRESISTIBLE.

Line dances are popular at many events, so the Cha Cha Slide or Boot Scootin’ Boogie are likely to be familiar to wedding guests. The bride and groom should lead whichever line dances are their favorites! Two-stepping is not difficult and gives guests a chance to catch their breath after a more fast-paced song. Two steps right, one step left and you’ve got it.

Play a variety of music if possible. Guests are more likely to dance if they hear their favorite songs. They may even sing along! by Nicole Molter

Families love to Help

By Nicole Molter YOUR FAMILY THREW YOU AWESOME BIRTHDAY PARTIES AS A KID, SO YOU’RE SURE THEY COULD PULL OFF THE PERFECT WEDDING RECEPTION, TOO. EVERYBODY COULD USE A LITTLE HELP TO PLAN THESE SORT OF THINGS, RIGHT? EXACTLY! SO HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR YOUR FAMILY WHO WILL BE THE HOSTESSES WITH THE MOSTESSES.

Assign a group of close friends and family to bring what will be needed. Smaller groups might be easier to keep in touch with and manage. Food, drinks, plates and such, and decorations are the basics to think about. A right-hand woman or man that can take the reigns at any moment is great to have. Pick someone organized and trustworthy to help coordinate the preparation and actual reception. Remember plates, silverware, napkins, and cups. For people who don’t enjoy cooking as much as others, these supplies would be great for them to bring. Suggest paper goods for easy clean up!

76

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

Nobody likes chaos. Clear and simple instructions will help to avoid that. Also, give those involved plenty of time in advance to get their tasks done with time to spare. Stick to the schedule! No ifs, ands, or buts. Overplanning can create unneeded stress. The more someone tries to control, the more likely it is for something to go awry. Instead of horseshoes, croquet, and a circus, maybe just stick to horseshoes for reception entertainment. Give useful favors. Small bags of coffee, mason jars of lemonade mix, sparklers for the send off – all ideas that won’t collect dust after the wedding day is over.

Rain Warning!

80

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

by Nicole Molter MOTHER NATURE IS NICE TO HAVE IN ATTENDANCE AT YOUR OUTDOOR RECEPTION AS LONG AS SHE COMES IN THE FORM OF SUNSHINE INSTEAD OF RAIN. UNFORTUNATELY WE CAN’T HELP WHAT THE WEATHER DECIDES TO DO, BUT PREPARING FOR RAIN CAN ACTUALLY BE FUN.

Have umbrellas ready for your guests if rain is in the

forecast. Nobody likes to be wet in their fancy clothes or wants to worry about their hair. You could also have huge patio umbrellas up to catch the rain, so the party could still go on outside. Umbrellas could also be a really cool feature in pictures. Rain boots are handy to have, even on your wedding day. They come in different colors and patterns, so they wouldn’t look bad at all with your wedding dress! You could even have some rain boots or flip-flops on hand for your guests to change into if their feet get wet. If rain is common in your area, look for a venue with a covered patio. Set up the food and anything not waterproof there. Everyone else can make a run for it if the rain decides to make an appearance!

Beat the Heat

by Nicole Molter

HOT, HOT, HOT. SUMMER TIME USUALLY HAS GREAT WEATHER FOR OUTDOOR WEDDINGS, BUT THE TEMPERATURE CAN GO THROUGH THE ROOF. HEAT CAN GET UNCOMFORTABLE, AND NO BRIDE AND GROOM WANT THAT FOR THEIR GUESTS.

Keep a water cooler available before, during, and after the wedding ceremony. An ice chest or water dispenser works great. The good news is that these items can be decorated and personalized for your event. Keep plenty of cups nearby and a trashcan, too. Another trick is a multipurpose program. Not only will the lineup and names be on it, but also it can double as a paper fan. These types are really cute with a popsicle stick (maybe with your monogram added?) glued on the back and with some ribbon or lace. Keep everything close to some shade in case someone gets too hot. Pick shady trees, patio umbrellas or a patio nearby for anyone who needs to seek refuge from the sun.

Activities for the Younger Crew by Nicole Molter

Some of your wedding guests are bound to be of the smaller and younger variety. To keep them occupied during the ceremony, provide activities so their parents can enjoy the sentimental aspects of the day. Coloring books are one option. Numerous websites also have coloring pages available to print for free. Puzzle pages will surely keep growing minds occupied long enough to get through the vows. The difficulty can be varied depending on the ages in attendance. Sudoku, connect-the-dots, and crosswords are a few brain teasing ideas. Disposable cameras are sure to be a thrill for younger guests. You may even get some unique perspectives in photographs to add to the memories of the day. Pass out little baggies of snacks for c hildren to munch on during the ceremony. Goldfish or Teddy Grahams are perfect for little fingers and mouths. It’s also a good idea to explain the significance of the day and how special it is to the bride and groom. Kis are smarter than we give them credit for and will usually live up to the expectations placed upon them.

ONE LAST CHANCE TO CELEBRATE:

FUN SEND OFF IDEAS

by Nicole Molter

The bride and groom’s send off is the last chance to celebrate before the night ends or the couple heads to their honeymoon destination. There are many unique ways to enjoy this moment in style and get some awesome final photographs!

Typically, the guests line up in rows for the bride and groom to run through on the way to their getaway vehicle. Guests can throw glitter, confetti or sprinkles, flower petals or flower buds. These all make colorful and fun photos. For less mess, your guests could blow bubbles, ring bells, wear glow sticks, or wave

ribbon wands. There are always sparklers to add even more light to the night! However, be sure to check with your venue on what is allowed. At the end of the line of guests, awaits the getaway vehicle to whisk the newlyweds away. What has always been your dream departure? This is your chance to make that dream happen! A two-seat bicycle, classic car (how about a Volkswagen beetle convertible?), a tractor, or a limo are all great options depending on the personality of the couple. THEWCMAG.COM

A Covenant of Love

By Nicole Molter TRADITION IS CLOSELY RELATED TO A WEDDING, BUT WHAT DO THE MEANINGS BEHIND CERTAIN TRADITIONS MEAN? THE SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF A WEDDING IS RELATED TO A TIME EVEN BEFORE GREAT, GREAT, GREAT GRANDPARENTS. A WEDDING IS A COVENANT, A TRADITION THAT HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE THE TIME OF ABRAHAM IN THE BOOK OF GENESIS IN THE BIBLE.

God created a covenant between

Abraham and promised land, blessings, and that the future generations of his family would be prosperous. To create a covenant in Biblical times, an animal would be sacrificed and cut in half. The two pieces would be separated to form an aisle. This is related to the significance of the aisle a bride walks down in a church. The bride’s veil is a symbol of purity in Christ, and is also a sacred relation to stories in the Bible. When speaking with God, people would often wear a veil over their faces to respect God’s power and glory.

86

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

Including a ring bearer and flower girl in the ceremony also has spiritual significance aside from them being so cute! Having children present is a reminder of the generations to come and witnesses of the covenant growing up and expanding the memory of the special promise. In a covenant long ago, belts were often exchanged as gifts. In a wedding, rings are used to exchange the promise and serve as a reminder to keep that promise. During the wedding ceremony, the groom takes his bride’s right hand. This is a symbol of support and joining two people.

Something we all love is food! And guess what? That is an important part of a covenant, too. Communion sealed a covenant between Christ and his disciples in the Last Supper, and the church takes Communion as part of God’s promise today. At a wedding reception, wine and wedding cake are the meal that seals the wedding covenant. While these traditions may or may not represent these characteristics to you, it is interesting to understand the background and the history that has traveled through the generations and are still prevalent in our modern ceremonies.
