WD’s editor Josanne Cassar Another year is here and WD is back for 2017 with its much-anticipated spring issue. It has been a long, exciting journey for our team as we look back at all our issues over the last FIVE years, the countless photo shoots and inspirational themes by our dedicated team who always manage to create something original and unique each time. The weddings we feature also continue to inspire us, especially when we bring you a wide selection of different styles and cultures as more and more people not only choose Malta as their destination wedding, but many Maltese nationals marry people from other countries as well. The ability to fuse together the traditions from different countries is always a source of great fascination. After all, when two people get married they bring together their own families and friends from all over the globe into one joyous party. And if there is one thing we know how to do well here, is to throw a good party! We are also very pleased to bring you the weddings of two photographers whom we often have worked with, as we have regularly featured the weddings they have photographed over the years: Rene Rossignaud and Tonio Lombardi who tied the knot with their brides last year.

With their vast knowledge of the weddings industry we were curious as to what they would opt for when it came to their own weddings, and what they have to say about choosing the best wedding vendors possible. Speaking of vendors, we would like to extend our thanks as always to those who help to make WD possible, not only our own fantastic photo shoot team, but all the clients from the wedding industry who support us through their advertising, which has allowed us to keep WD absolutely FREE for our readers. Remember we are the only weddings magazine which is distributed free of charge, which is online at www.issuu.com/ weddingday and which guarantees additional social media exposure through our WeddingDay Facebook page where we promote our advertisers on a regular basis. If you would like more information on how to advertise in our next two issues (summer and autumn) please contact us for our tailor-made special offers.

Romano Cassar Florists: We can cater for your every theme! with leading foreign companies in countries such as Holland. We have truly moulded ourselves into a team of passionate artists who are always eager to design something unique. With Carnival festivities still fresh in our minds we can’t help but think of bright hues and bombastic ensembles. Here is a quick tête-à-tête between WeddingDay and Debbie, Florist Designer at Romano Cassar, to see what this season means to her.

We are among Malta’s oldest companies within the local floral industry, dating all the way back to the 1950s. It all began in our founder’s fields, in which he grew as many flowers as he could to sell in local markets around the island. Clearly, the business has grown substantially since then; however the passion it’s rooted in never grows old! One of our most memorable milestones would have to be the exporting of our flowers overseas, notably to Covent Garden in the UK. This extension of geographical reach has allowed us to experience a large-scale growth, in both the business itself and our own knowledge, and build strong affiliations

Our style has been carefully crafted through acute dedication to each and every one of our works. We are always on the lookout for new inspiration and this ensures that everything we do is a product of imagination. Therefore, each service we provide, whether it be a wedding, home décor, plant design etc. – we execute with passion.

volved in numerous types of occasions, ranging from critical state events to much more lavish ones, such as weddings and yacht design. All are so different in their execution; however, one that really stood out for me was the Pink Fashion Show last year. It was an amazing event for us, as we were given free reign as floral designers that allowed us to fully exercise our creative abilities and the result was incredible. This annual event is a highly anticipated one and we were so proud to call the work our own. How would you describe recent trends? Do you often see brides and grooms opting for over-the-top arrangements to match their larger-than-life wedding theme or do you feel that the majority go for plain and simple styles?

We have come to learn that trends vary a lot, you never know what to expect from your next request! Our end results range so much in their style as we channel our work from the personality and vision we feel our clients hold. As florists, we believe that we have a That’s a tough question. art, whilst also ensuring the couple’s character is accurately reflected. We get all sorts of styles and requests, however I do believe that there are timeless wedding trends that we will never stop seeing, such as the featuring of crystals and pearls. Where do you look for inspiration for different themed weddings? Inspiration is all around us. As an artist, I find myself constantly taking mental snapshots of the world around me and I tend to translate that into my work. When it comes to weddings, we like to get truly inspired by the couple themselves. We ask as many questions as we need to get an authentic sense of who they are as clients and as a couple and what they are seeking out for their special day. As a team, we aim to produce nothing but the best that we can and bestow all that we do with our signature touch.

Carnival feeling

Photography by Katerina Vella-Rykabkova

Strong, vibrant colours reminiscent of a fun, Carnival atmosphere were the inspiration for this photo shoot. As we get ready to welcome spring with open arms after a cold, very rainy, winter season, we were lucky that the weather was on our side and it turned out to be a gorgeous day. To dash away the gloom of grey skies and the depressing chilly dampness of the Maltese winter, our team was inspired by our creative director Jessica C. Moritz to create a theme which reflects the free spirit of a quirky, fun-loving bride who is anything but conventional. With the endless choices these days when it comes to themes and decor, as well as experts who specialize in bringing your vision to life, it has become easier to break away from the crowd and do your own thing. Your wedding should always be a mirror of who you are as a couple - there is no point in going for a formal, traditional look like everyone else, if that is simply not “you”. Here we show how this special day can be a real celebration where, after the ceremony, the bride and groom can let their hair down, together with their friends and families, and simply have fun. This stunning venue is Castello dei Baroni which was made available to us by manager Edward D’Alessandro who went out of his way to accommodate our every request. Built during in 1783, when the Knights of the Order of St John were in Malta, the Castello has withstood the test of time and has gracefully maintained most of its original structures as it has been carefully restored over the years. There is an expanse of outdoor space near the pool as well as an equally large area indoors should the weather play up. A large parking area is also provided. Detailed set-ups such as this require quite a large outdoor venue such as this Castello, located in Wardija, which is widely sought-after by couples, especially for large weddings. Foreign couples who tend to have smaller weddings can also use parts of the Castello which can be sectioned off according to their needs.

The SETTING Johanna from Bali Stuff once again used her ingenuity to decorate the venue with polka-dotted banners, pinwheels of very colour, balloons and cute hand-made sign posts. Paper cones filled with red hearts are used as confetti instead of the traditional rice. Everything about the decor just signals that a great party is about to take place, and your first cue is when you walk in through the bold red and white stripes of the tent-like entrance. Partially inspired by Tim Burton with his eccentric fusion of fantasy with reality, and partially a salute to Carnival, all the bright splashes of colour signal the arrival of a new season as we shed our winter coats and usher in warmer weather. It is an ideal setting for a young couple whose personalities do not want to be stifled by do’s and don’ts and want this to be a great once-in-a-lifetime event.

guests with a sweet tooth will go crazy for your candy table!

THE MODEL Our model, Sacha Salerno Seguna, fit this theme perfectly, and her tiny petite frame was just right to show off this exquisite gown by Wedding Bells in Valletta. Delicate and oh so pretty, this is a tulle ball gown with corseted bodice in guipure lace and nude lining. The animal skin boots are the bride’s own and gave an extra personal touch to this photo shoot in which everyone enjoyed coming up with innovative ideas, inspired by the theme’s playful mood. Many of today’s young brides sport elaborate tattoos and rather than trying to ‘hide’ them on the day of their wedding, they show them off with pride. Sacha shows how to wear your ‘ink’ with confidence on your big day, but also displayed her softer side in the indoor shots (p.21) where she wore the lovely long cape adorned with feathers at the neck, which comes with the dress.

WD | 19

HAIR Joseph from Hairoscope used Sacha’s very striking features to create a hairstyle which is both dramatic and intricate. The curls are swept into a bun to one side in a partial up style, while the rest of the hair is left long and straight over one shoulder. It is a bold hairstyle but one which complements the model’s strong look. A gentle wave over her forehead softens the style so that it is not too severe.

MAKE-UP Sacha’s olive complexion, her dark well-defined brows and large expressive eyes meant that make-up artist Daniela Cassar needed to use rather dramatic make-up. This season’s standout style is without doubt the dark dramatic lip. The model’s features were perfect for this look as not everyone can handle dark lips. Daniela first applied a matte plum lipstick. On top of it a burgundy lipstick was applied to create a 3d effect. Lip shine was added only in the middle of the lips. Then Daniela applied a nude colour on the eyelid. A dark rose pink shade was applied on the crease blended upwards on the eye bone. Last but not least, Daniela created a double winged eyeliner. This is done by drawing a winged line parallel to the winged line on the upper lid.

DRESS & STYLING Marquita, our bridal stylist, did an amazing job to show Sacha’s lithe figure to its best advantage. The tight corset, which can be adjusted from the back, shows off our model’s tiny waist, while the décolletage is just the right amount of “sexy” without being too revealing. When choosing your wedding dress be sure to be honest with the sales person about what you are looking for, but above all, don’t be afraid to try on a dress you would have never dreamed of choosing. In our experience, many brides end up wearing something they had never imagined in a million years, but sometimes when they try on the dress they were shaking their heads over, they do end up saying “yes to the dress”! When it came to the more “fun” parts of the shoot, Marquita cleverly rolled up the dress inside its own inner skirt to create this effect of a shorter dress. This kind of styling works very well when you are experimenting with your wedding photographer to get the most out of your wedding pictures. Working hand in hand with our photographer Katerina, Marquita was able to blend Sacha’s sultry looks with the rest of the theme, to create this look which combines wedding glamour and a touch of that something offbeat and quirky.

CAKE & DETAILS One of the trends which has really caught on at weddings are candy tables, and thanks to Dylan’s House of Candy who provided all the delicious sweets, set designer Johanna Zammit was able to show how these details can be spread around a wedding venue to keep with the fun atmosphere throughout. From lollipops to jelly babies, to every other type of sweet imaginable, this is sure to keep those who have a sweet tooth extremely happy! Our cake was custom-designed for this issue by Michelle Decelis of MCreative Cakes, an extremely talented cake decorator who was simply shown a photo of the cake we wanted it and created it to a T. The pinwheels reflect the larger pinwheels used as decor at the venue, and the whole colour scheme is captured as well. This is not your typical wedding cake that’s for sure, but for those who dare to do things differently…why not?

THE BOUQUET Joseph Baldacchino of Flower Arts created a bouquet with a vintage mix of tulips, ranunculus and orchids. Sometimes a bouquet does not have to be too elaborate and yet can still make a statement according to your theme. This compact bouquet is just right for Sacha as she has such a small frame. One must remember that a bouquet should never be too overpowering and large for the bride who will be holding it in many of the photos. With its vintage feel, it complements the set up created by the rest of the team and reminds us that spring is on the way.

Rene Rossignaud & Lara Bonavia 17th December 2016 photos: Alexandra Pace

Having photographed hundreds of weddings, he is usually on the other side of the lens, but this time it was Rene Rossignaud’s turn to smile and say ‘cheese’ as he tied the knot with Lara Bonavia. In fact, it was precisely through his work that he met Lara, as their paths crossed more than a few times over the years. “Ironically, I met Rene at a close friend’s wedding, where I was bridesmaid and he was the photographer, back in 2010. In the meantime, I moved to New York, only moving back to Malta in 2013 and that same year, in September, I met him at another friend’s wedding. That’s where the spark was lit. Two weeks later it practically ignited at another friend’s wedding. And that was it… that was where it all started. Later we found out that we had actually hung out with the same groups back in our teenage years in Bugibba during the summer months.” They decided to get married because they both believe they found what was missing in their lives in each other. “We complement each other. We both believe in second chances at finding true love and we were lucky to find that in each other.” The romantic proposal took place during a vacation in Morocco. “We took a long five hour trip to get to an old city in the middle of nowhere, Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate. I suffer from travel sickness so Rene, throughout the entire journey, kept apologising for the long drive, insisting it would all be worth it in the end. Once we got there, in a blistering 45 degrees, we climbed to a

WD | 33

high viewing point (amidst loads of grumbling). Rene pointed to the edge of the cliff and told me he’d be right back. He approached an elderly man, handed him the camera after a short conversational exchange and headed straight back to me. I was surprised to say the least since Rene NEVER parts with his camera, barely even giving it to me, let alone a complete stranger. This, of course, made me very antsy. Rene was on the ground fidgeting in his bag, while I was getting really worked up about the guy holding his camera and the fact that we were making him wait a while to get this photo. He, of course, was looking for the ring and that is when he brought the box out and grabbed my hand and asked me to be his wife. We all know how that went! In the meantime, the elderly man had been instructed to start taking pictures from the moment Rene started walking back to me, so you can actually see all my facial expressions and hand gestures at Rene, asking what in the world he was doing while the man was busy clicking away to record our memories.

Lara chose a simply cut strapless dress with a touch of lace and instantly knew this was the right dress when she tried it on. “My mother concurred through lots of tears saying “Lara, this is all you”. Indeed, it was.” The people in the bridal party were the people who supported them from the start of their relationship. “I had four bridesmaids in all, my only sister and three of my closest friends, as well as Rene’s older daughter as a junior bridesmaid and his younger daughter as a flower girl. My nephew was the ring bearer. My witness was my closest Aunty, whom I love to bits, she is like a second mum to me.” The two ushers were Rene’s closest friends. They work together on a daily basis and are his most trusted, loyal and reliable friends. Rene’s best man, Luke Camilleri, was his best friend since childhood. They have known each other for around 20 years and have shared many memorable experiences together.

How does a wedding photographer choose who to have as a photographer for his own wedding? Rene had no doubts: “Obviously, I know the ins and outs of a wedding pretty well. I was adamant about having Alexandra Pace as our photographer and The Residents as our band. The rest was pretty much up to Lara. In fact, I was abroad for practically a whole month before the wedding day so, yes, basically all of the errands and preparations were left up to Lara “ One other thing which was in Rene’s hands was the choice of song for the first dance, which was “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. The Residents are managed by Tunin Entertainment and are very much in demand by couples wanting to have a great band to provide just the right atmosphere. Tunin Entertainment are probably one of the island’s most experienced suppliers of musical entertainment for weddings and can match the couple’s requirements with any of the professional singers, groups and bands which they have on their books. Rene and Lara decided to write their own vows to

make the ceremony more personal and special. “We also chose two important people in our lives as our readers, and had the people closest to heart right by our sides. I also had my father and my son walk me down the aisle – which was a spontaneous yet great decision.” For their wedding venue, the couple chose Villa Arrigo. “Undoubtedly the delicious and mouth-watering food, the vast selection of food items and of course, the right cost to meet our budget were the important factors for us. We have both tasted Osborne Caterer’s food on multiple occasions and had no doubt in our minds that they would not let us down. We both stuffed ourselves on our wedding day, the food was to die for! Overall, Villa Arrigo did a spectacular job both with the catering as well as décor and set up. We can definitely give them two thumbs up!” They decided to do away with the traditional almond wedding cake and instead chose their personal favourites: carrot cake and red velvet cake.

Rather than any particular theme, the couple simply went for a personal touch that people could identify as ‘Rene and Lara’s wedding’. “It was simple, nothing over the top, yet perfect in every way. Right venue, perfect food, pumping music and most importantly, we enjoyed every second of it. We had a photo album as a guest book, so people could flip through our photos and leave a message next to any particular picture they liked. I also surprised Rene with a speech, which apparently made quite a few people shed a tear. We were also blessed with fantastic weather in the middle of December after a week of relentless rain. We still can’t believe it till this very day, since the next day it was back to raining. Guess it was meant to be!” The venue was tastefully decorated by Floreal who also made the lovely bridal bouquet according to the colour scheme of cream and blush pink. The atmosphere of the day simply radiated happiness and joy which were wonderfully captured by the very natural looking photos taken by the photographer. Lara recalls that she was extremely laid back throughout the entire process. “In fact, both family and friends kept

telling me how relaxed I was about the wedding. I was still kidding around while lining up to walk down the aisle. And that’s where I broke down. My Dad kept telling me how married life was the start to a new journey, where it was just Rene and myself and we were each other’s priority, and that nothing else mattered, which, of course was very fitting because of our first dance. And that’s when the floodgates opened. I got very emotional and overwhelmed and practically cried through all the ceremony – walking down the aisle, reading our vows and then again during my speech. I had dreamt of this day ever since I was a little girl and the day had finally arrived. Sounds so cliché but it really was more than anything we could have dreamed of.” Lara adds that they had promised each other that nothing and no one would deflect the attention from them on that day. “It was our day. We had the people who love us most around us, sharing this important milestone in our lives, including our son. Everything went just as we had hoped it would. Months of preparation came to perfect fruition. And yes, the blissful weather was just the cherry on the cake. Looking back, we wouldn’t change one single second of the day.”

Tonio Lombardi & Natalie Calleja 14 May 2016 th

photos: George Saguna & Armand Sciberras

Wedding photographers have seen it all - from the classic to the informal, from everything perfectly matching to a more laid-back style. From weddings where everyone is prim and proper to weddings where people cut loose and dance till dawn. So, with all this experience of how everyone else ties the knot, how does a wedding photographer decide what he or she wants for their own weddings? Tonio Lombardi and his fiancee Natalie Calleja certainly knew one thing: they wanted people to have fun and to put a personal stamp on their wedding by doing things which were outside the norm. The proposal was equally ‘different’. “We were eating at one of our favourite restaurants in Gozo and Tonio put the ring box (which had the shape of a pebble) behind my plate, thus when the waiter took our plates away, I saw this rock-like thing and curi-

ously asked where it came from. When I lifted it up I realised that it was quite light for a pebble and then I noticed Tonio’s expression (he was about to burst out laughing). It was a real surprise since I was not expecting it. We sometimes spoke about it but we never actually said ‘OK let’s get married’, so it really was a surprise.” Natalie’s beautiful and unique custom-made bridal dress was inspired by the 1940-50s era. “It was very difficult to choose since all the designs were amazing, but my heart skipped a beat whenever I looked at the design I finally chose. The bridal shoes were also custom made locally to reflect the era and topped off with a special accessory handmade by my mother. She also made a matching hairpiece, patiently sticking the beads together one by one, something that I will treasure forever.”

WD | 45

Natalie’s sister was instrumental in helping her choose the designs for the bridal party: “I showed the initial designs to my sister, who was the maid of honour and has an exquisite sense of style and she helped me decide. However, I also kept in mind the bridesmaids’ styles in order to make sure that the chosen dresses would be to their liking and thus make them feel comfortable. It was of paramount importance for us that all the wedding party, and the guests in general felt comfortable throughout the whole day.” Tonio decided to have three best men, as he didn’t want to burden anyone with all the tasks. and chose his closest friends, who know him very well. As with most people who are artistic, Tonio’s creativity does not stop at photography: “I was involved in the design of the invitations, the preparation of the food menu and the drinks. I chose a photographer that would make us feel comfortable. I knew George and Armand would do the perfect job. I was also involved in the scouting of the props we used for decorating the venue, most of which were sourced from flea markets.”

The couple chose St. Anthony’s Chapel, Ghajnsielem, Gozo which was very close to the reception venue to make it easy for their guests. “We carefully chose the readings for the ceremony. We also wanted to have a ceremony that was personal to us. Thus we chose a priest who is a friend – Fr Brendon Gatt. He gave an excellent homily that really reflects our personalities.” The venue they decided on happens to have a breathtaking view of the Mgarr Harbour, Comino and Malta. It is indeed one of the most beautiful views we have ever seen. We had dined at the restaurant several times and the food always exceeded our expectations. So we asked Joseph for a tasting session. Another unique touch was their cake which was also custom made. “We discussed the theme of the wedding and brainstormed ideas for the cake design. Finally we came up with a three-tier cake. Tonio and I are both book & movie buffs so the bottom tier was wrapped with printed quotes from our favourite books and movies.”

It is not usual for a Maltese couple to get married in Gozo, unless one of them is originally from there, but Tonio and Natalie are not your ‘usual’ couple. “We are always on the look out for something different and this event was no exception. We both love Gozo, and visit often, so we decided to get married there. Gozo has a special place in our hearts; it’s the place we escape to, where we can live our lives surrounded by nature and at a slightly slower pace. “We wanted our wedding to reflect this. We wanted the guests to know that this was not a formal, stiff wedding. We just wanted them to be there and have fun with us. Most of our guests knew us very well but we wanted to announce it in the invitations: IT WILL BE COLOURFUL & SEMI-FORMAL LADIES, LEAVE YOUR HATS AT HOME; GENTS, TIE OR NO TIE, JACKET OR NOT THEY’RE STILL TYING THE KNOT “We worked hard on the invitations including the selection of the paper, the wording and the packaging.”

“As for the guestbook, after looking for some inspiration, we settled on using a real typewriter (which Natalie’s Dad used for his typewriting exam in his days) and a stack of paper branded with the wedding logo printed on it, similar to the invitations.” “We also wanted to give out a souvenir that reminds people of us. We had a small fridge magnet printed with landscape photos we shot while travelling together and packaged in a plastic wrapper. We also decided to give a substantial donation to the sisters of Mother Teresa.” The couple admits that the days leading up to the wedding were really tense as the weather was persisting with a strong southerly wind and rain that was not favourable for the wedding venue. On the day of the wedding, the wind stopped, and the sun came out. It was a beautiful May day. “We couldn’t believe it. We were very lucky. You can imagine the smiles on our faces! Together with our guests we could enjoy the view we loved so much.” The attention to detail could be seen everywhere, even in the cars which were loaned to them by friends: A per-

fectly restored, circa 1953 Ford Prefect, for the bridal car, and a VW Transporter van for the bridal party. Not only do the amazing photos of this wedding say it all, but Natalie and Tonio also sum it up perfectly, “It was colourful, fun and we both felt extremely relaxed and happy surrounded by people we love. For us it was like going to a very good party where you know everyone around you. Smiles could be seen everywhere.”

When you have a multi-cultural wedding between two people who have lived in different parts of the world, the decision of where to get married can get a bit complicated. In Sheena and Glen’s case there were three options: Canada (where Sheena had lived for 10 years), Kenya (where Sheena was born and raised) and Malta (where Glen was born and raised and lived all his life). “Malta was the eventual winner as it was convenient for planning purposes. It was definitely easier to make trips to and from Malta simply because it was closer than the other options. More importantly, Malta was chosen because it’s simply a beautiful location with lovely and hospitable people, stunning landscapes and architecture and a general warm vibe. We knew all our international family and friends travelling over would love it as much as we do and we wanted to share this gem of a place which some people had never heard of.” Most foreign couples soon realise that to plan a destination wedding, it is best to have someone “on the ground” so to speak. A wedding planner can give them excellent advice and point them to the best suppliers to

suit their needs. In this case, Sheena and Glen turned to Bernice Bugeja from Love is… who was recommended to them. “We would recommend her to anyone wanting to get married in Malta. We can’t thank her enough for the fantastic job she did on our wedding! To begin with, all of Bernice’s suggestions on vendors turned out to be great. We were happy with all her suggestions as the vendors were all professional, produced services and goods of a high quality and at a reasonable rate. Bernice was always available to answer our questions, offer suggestions and generally put our minds at ease - something that we greatly valued given that we were planning our wedding in Malta from the UK. I never had to wait too long to hear back from her either and she was always timely in her responses to us. Bernice also kept all our ideas in mind and helped make all of them a reality during our wedding week. We could not have hoped for better.” Apart from the wedding day, Bernice also helped to coordinate the wedding welcome party for all the out of town guests. “We really appreciated this as Bernice went above and beyond to make this night a success. again, we were not disappointed. Her organisation and support showed itself on the day when all went off without a hitch. The reception hall looked fantastic and all the details, whether big or small, were all taken care of. Bernice, you are a sweet person with a great personality. We had loads of particular requests and were nit-picky at times, but Bernice handled it all wonderfully. The gorgeous flower arrangments were done by WeddingDay magazine’s official florist Joseph Badacchino of Flower Arts. He set up two bright flower arrangements on podiums for the ceremony. The look of the dining area was very romantic with candles and flowers, which were kept in shades of white, mint and pale pink. Joseph made use mainly of hydrangea, roses. and baby roses. Considering the international scope of the wedding the couple had a lot of requests, from transport, to event entertainment to the wedding ceremony requirements.

In total they had around 160 guests and it was truly an international affair. “We had around 60 guests who came from different countries including the UK, Canada, Ireland, Dubai, South Africa, Kenya, U.S.A., Tanzania, Australia and even Tajikistan!” Sheena is of an Indian background so of course her culture had to feature in the wedding which was reflected in the décor and in the clothing. The couple wrote their own vows for the Indian-themed ceremony and chose readings which they really loved which were read out by close family members. “We wanted to show the beautiful and rich Indian culture through intricately hand woven clothes and through some of the ceremonies performed at the reception. We had some Indian music as well and it was amazing to see the mesh of the Indian and Maltese cultures and how different but so similar they were!”

Anyone who has foreign guests coming over for a wedding need to choose the right caterers, who know how to create just the right kind of menu. “For the cake, we had the chef create a look whereby it looked like there were pearls stuck on the cake. I thought it would create a very classy and timeless look.” The beautiful cascade of real fresh flowers were done by her florist Joseph Baldacchino of Flower Arts. Although admitting to being really nervous, Sheena says she was also extremely happy at the same time. “All the people we cared about and loved were in the same room enjoying this huge step with us. In our minds, everything was perfect and we couldn’t have wished for a better day! Seeing all our months of planning come to fruition and sharing that with your family and closest friends was a top highlight. Seeing the smile and happiness on each other’s faces and knowing that this was a forever thing was indescribable.”

For their venue, the choice fell on this breathtaking location. “We love the location and the backdrop of the sea for our ceremony. We also loved the indoor option as the banquet hall suited our wedding size.” WD | 59

Melissa Lee & Michael Wellington 27th May 2016

Michael and Melissa have been together for 15 years and have two beautiful children, Ethan 10 and Isabella 2. “We met in a local club through mutual friends. Michael was shy and I am the outgoing one; I’m pretty sure we were both drunk and exchanged numbers, and the rest is history. Michael is my rock and my soul mate. We have been through so much together and are stronger than ever, so getting married was the last piece of our puzzle. If I could I’d do it a million times over.” Melissa’s bridal party was made up of her best friends and a cousin: “They are my rocks, always by my side so why would it be any different on my wedding day? Yes they are very opinionated and I know that whether something is good or bad they would be straight up and tell me.” The ushers looked extremely dashing in their royal blue suits, while the couple’s adorable chil-

dren were also included in the wedding party. The choice to have a destination wedding came about because Michelle always wanted to get married outside and have beautiful weather. As we know, the one thing our island can (almost always) guarantee is sunshine! “My friend is Maltese and we were talking about her wedding, so that planted the seed. When Michael and I visited, we fell in love with the island.” She chose her wedding planner, Helen Falzon from Jewelweddings through an online forum where a lot of brides were saying how wonderful she is. It was obviously the right choice: “Helen is genuine and you get this impression from the moment you meet her. Anything I asked of her she always did with her warm and gentle smile. She was and is amazing. I have even recommended her to my friend for her wedding. I am

very particular. I like what I like and Helen understood that immediately.” By searching for what she wanted on Pinterest and coming up with mood boards, Melissa came up with her perfect romantic theme, and Helen helped her to achieve just the right look, while sourcing the right suppliers. Asked how involved he was, Michael has to laugh: “I know what Mel’s answer will be, she will say zero, nothing at all. Their was the odd hmmm and yeah but really, not very much more! Mel did almost everything as she is better at that stuff.” During the ceremony, Michael shed a tear which surprised Melissa as he has never ever done that before, “that spoke volumes to me.” The choice of venue fell on one of Malta’s major hotels because it perfectly fit Melissa’s idea of what their wedding reception should be like. “It resembles a small olive grove and at night the trees are lit up by fairy lights. It was so romantic and exactly what I had envisioned. It was almost like an elves’ kingdom.” This is a great outdoor venue, which can cater for large or small weddings with the staff adjusting the location according to your requirements. The delicious catering was also a hit with all their 70 guests who travelled from London to be at this couple’s wedding.

The couple were also full of praise for their “outstanding photographer” Elliot Nichols, who they said went above and beyond their requirements, and whom they have also recommended to a friend. On the day, Michelle remembers being very anxious and waking up at 5am with her two maids of honour who had slept in her room. “We had a couple of glasses of champagne and a giggle to calm our nerves. Everything went to plan, it was a little windy so some things didn’t work but it was still very beautiful” “There is nothing more special than having all the people who mean the most to you in one place, and knowing that each and every one of them wanted to be there for us, flying over and spending their holiday with us. It’s a day I wasn’t sure would happen as Michael made me wait for years, but it did happen in the exact right place, at the exact right moment and the exact right time, but most of all with the exact right person.”

Aujas Dattani & Sam Roden 18 September 2016 th

photos: Tonio Lombardi

Here at WD we have heard all sorts of stories of how couples met, on the Internet, at work, through friends. But…a bake sale? Yes, that’s right: Aujas was selling cakes at a bake sale at the accounting college where she worked and Sam was a student, “and even though he was on a diet, he had to buy a cake.” Two years after that first date they were on a trip to Mexico when Sam arranged for a romantic candle light dinner to be set up on the beach, with live music playing. “Around 15 minutes before the dinner was to be laid, the heavens opened, thunder, lighting, the works. But Sam did not give up. He arranged for the candles and roses to be laid out back in the villa by the hotel staff. When we arrived back in the room, Sam went down on one knee and asked the question.”

that Sam broke the silence by saying “would you like to see the ring”. Aujas nodded. Sam picked a candle from the bedside table and trying to hold the light up to the ring, he accidentally poured candle wax all over Aujas, who screamed out!” It was a proposal neither of them will ever forget. When shopping for a dress it is always best to keep an open mind. Aujas’ wedding dress was designed to reflect both Indian and English cultures, which was perfect for their theme. Although she was originally looking for a low back, simple white dress, she could not find anything she liked, so she decided to go another way. When she put this dress on, her sisters and friends loved it. “After a few small tweaks to make the dress “me” I fell in love with it. I am glad I didn’t find the simple white dress in the end.”

Aujas was so shocked that she stood there with The maid of honour, Janki Dattani is the middle her mouth open for what felt like forever.. such a sister to the Dattani Family, commonly known as long time passed (and since the room was dark) the Chief Bridesmaid. The bride speaks of both WD | 69

her sisters with great affection: “Janki is the loving and caring soul of the Dattani family, who provides food and warmth to the household, when requested. Nandini Dattani, the youngest sister, is also known as Fab Nand. Nand shares a great passion of food with the bride and they are known as partners in crime, because of their crazy random adventures. Nand prides herself on her excellent selfie skills and promised the wedding day would be provided with fab photos & selfies.” The ushers, Jake and Ollie, have been Sam’s best friends for over 15 years, they started out playing rugby at Moseley Rugby Club, and have travelled the world together. The best man was his brother Josh, “I couldn’t be luckier to have a brother like Josh. He has been my best friend for ever and we are the closest brothers that you will come across. There was only really one man for the job.” Aujas wanted to step away from the traditional Asian wedding and get married abroad. As Sam has family in Malta they knew how beautiful it was, and it was only a short distance to fly from the UK. “Malta for us was the only destination that we looked at and we couldn’t have

been happier with it. All of our guests absolutely loved Malta as well.” The venue they chose was perfect for their balmy September wedding and they were pleased with their choice and the fact that everything was organized so smoothly. “It looked far better than any of the pictures we had seen or anything we could have originally imagined.” Over 100 guests travelled from lots of different countries including the UK, India, Germany, Estonia, Belgium and Dubai to share this special day. The flowers were by Romano Cassar, one of the island’s top florists, who ensured the decor and the bouquets were according to the couple’s satisfaction. “We thought it would also look extra special to hang chandeliers over the dining tables. We are glad that we did as it gave the day that “extra touch” and the venue looked amazing.” The ceremony was very special and included two short poems read by Sam’s Mum Liz, and Aujas’ s cousin Amar which were really lovely.

“Our caterers could not have been more amazing. We requested that the food be “Indian”. This was not something our caterers had prepared for a wedding before, so we found some recipes that we thought would work well, and sent them through. We then flew out to Malta ahead of the wedding and we could not have been more happy. The food was so delicious that it was unreal. We had Samosas, spring rolls and much more for starters, a huge spread of different main courses and a beautiful Maltese trifle for desert. We requested all of the food to be put in the centre of each table so that people could pick as much of each dish as they wanted, and they were refilled if needed. The request was exactly tailored to our needs and made our day extra special. We decided to have a nice simple plain cake on the outside, however we had 3 layers with a different flavour in each layer Baco (our favourite, red velvet and vanilla. We also had fresh flowers by Romano Cassar decorating the cake.” The couple exchanged vows under a very pretty flower arch specially made for this wedding by Flower Design, Siggiewi.

Looking back on the day, Sam says, “I was feeling stressed in the few days running up to the wedding, as we had 100 guests all staying in the same hotel and it felt quite hard to try and keep everybody happy, however on the morning of the wedding, I felt really happy and excited. The whole day ran extremely smoothly, until 11pm when the heavens opened and there was thunder and lighting. It didn’t ruin the day however and everybody carried on the party like it didn’t matter. Also quite funnily, the registrar mispronounced my name “Samwell”, and when saying my vows I also repeated the wrong name!” Aujas says, “I had been relaxed and excited before the wedding, so I was so lucky to have Sam who organised everything. All I had to do was pick up my dress and shoes and turn up on time to the wedding. The only thing that gave me a scare was on the morning of the wedding day when Sam didn’t pick up his phone, We were staying in separate rooms and he had put his phone on silent and had gone to sleep. I was up early as I was having my hair and make-up done and couldn’t get through to him. I was so worried he wasn’t going to turn up, but he did!”

Kersten Bugeja & Denise Vella 3 April 2016 rd

photos: Aleksey Leonov

Growing up in Mgarr, Denise and Kersten have known each other since childhood, their families knew each other and they had mutual groups of friends. “Kersten is a timid guy but once when he was a little tipsy, he plucked up courage and spoke to me bringing up various subjects including my ex-boyfriend! I liked him but the fact that he did not come forward made me think he was not really interested and I started to shy away and cool off. Little did I know that he was trying to find enough courage to finally ask me out. It happened when we were both at ‘Lejla Mgarrija’ and we have never looked back. It got serious pretty quickly and we started planning our future together in a natural way. We both knew that we had had found our soulmate and wanted to get married eventually. There was no formal proposal but we started planning our future together not long after we met.”

WD | 76

Denise had always dreamt of a princess-like ballgown and was very happy when she found it. But it was when she was shown the cape that came with it, that she truly fell in love with the dress. “I am a creative person and I am really into the vintage look. I chose the dresses for the bridal party according to our pastel colour scheme, keeping in mind that we we were having a Spring wedding. I found the dresses for my bridesmaids in peach and bought mint material to have a dress sewn for my flower girl, Kersten’s 4-yearold niece. Apart from my sisters, I chose my best friend for my bridal party. Adriana and I became close when we were both studying to follow our passion for hairdressing. I was her bridesmaid at her wedding 6 months before mine; we are like sisters.”

The wedding ceremony was held at St Anne’s Church, Zebbiegh, close to their hometown of Mgarr. The couple chose a venue with a lovely garden for their reception. “We went to our friends’ wedding there and we both loved it the minute we stepped in. We had always wanted to choose a nice garden for our wedding reception. Kersten’s mother prepared a good number of delicious Gozo cheeselets which went down really well with the guests. They were presented with the cheese and wine table. I am also a cake decorator and I wished to decorate our wedding cake. It was no easy task with all the final preparations but I made it. I even asked an artist to show me how to paint watercolour roses so that I would use the same technique for our wedding cake. I had a clear vision of how I wanted it to be and Kersten went along with the idea too. I was helped by my second cousin, Felicienne Micallef to decorate it. She even baked some beautiful cup cakes while I baked different kinds of cookies and decorated another cake for the sweets table.”

With her heart set on a vintage theme, Denise left no stone unturned to achieve what they both had in mind. “We even had a cream, soft carpet made for the church and ordered tailor-made delicate cream chiffon wide ribbons to cover the pews of the church. The bridal car was a light blue vintage car. My Dad did the impossible and turned my ideas and the photos I showed him into reality. He made several loose pieces of furniture, painted them and made them look very vintage. The custommade photo booth was well received and many of our guests took pictures there.” On the day of the wedding the bride says she woke up serene and pretty calm. “Naturally, I had butterflies in my stomach but I was one very happy lady. Since the Mass was at 2pm, we started getting ready early. The time flew by and the photographer and videographer were at our door before we knew it. I cannot forget the look on Kersten’s face when we met at church.” The day turned out as they had hoped and they had an amazing time surrounded by their loved ones. Even a mi-

nor incident could not spoil the day and in fact they now look back on it and laugh. “When I arrived at the church, my bridal car was involved in a minor accident with the groom’s car! Looking back, it was quite funny that a warden had to be called on site while we were saying our I do’s.” “The band Red Electrick was the cherry on the cake when it came to entertaining our guests and even Kersten danced to his heart’s content. I was really pleased that Kersten’s shyness did not get in the way. When we look back and reminisce about our special day, we smile and feel blessed to have shared our day with those dear to us. Kersten and I were really happy that everything went as planned but most of all that we had finally gotten married. “ Instead of souvenirs the couple made a donation to Puttinu and gave guests small vintage boxes containing a Baci chocolate.
