Wi Exclusive Interview

Shelby and R iley

Where did the proposal take place?

Riley and I attended the Marine Corps ball in San Diego at the Sheraton Marina. He was to be deployed in a month and I wouldn’t see him for 7 more months, so it made the weekend even more special for us. I was very happy! We were having lunch in downtown San Diego the next day and I was looking glam in a t-shirt and jean shorts. We were looking at pictures from the night before when he got very serious and proposed! The first thing I said was, “OMG, shut up”! Yes, I was surprised! After the proposal, and you began to plan your wedding, what did you do first?

We picked a date. Then our venue. And then, I began to look for the dress of my dreams.

Your colors are dramatic. How did you choose them?

I have always loved red, golds, and creams. I thought the red would stand out against the white and creams of my gown and those of the bridal party. What was your vision for the wedding and reception?

I wanted it to look classy and timeless. Lots of candles and white flowers. The tablecloths were a golden hue with centerpieces of white roses. Do you remember what you were thinking as you walked down the aisle?

It was a blur but I do remember looking at him and thinking, “Wow! This is it! We’re going to get married for ever and ever!”. What song did you dance to as husband and wife? When I Say I Do by Matthew West. I would add that another special memory is dancing with my Dad to Tim McGraw’s My Little Girl. What was your favorite moment?

Riley and I had a first look and it was a sweet, touching moment for us. Our photographer, Sherry Lynch, did a wonderful job of capturing this very special time between Riley and me without being obtrusive.

What was the best surprise of the day?

Riley wrote me a sweet, touching letter that I read before our first look. I will always treasure it. Was there anything that you splurged on?

I would say my dress (and I loved it). Secondly, we had a band, the Stars. While it was an extra expense, it was worth it! Our guests danced the night away with us! Riley looks so handsome in his dress blues. Is it difficult being a military couple?

Our relationship has always been long distance because of Riley’s career in the Marine Corps, so it’s been hard but always worth it. For me, it’s all about my mind set and knowing what’s best for each other. WI side note: Congratulations to this wonderful military couple. WI extends luck and gratitude

to Riley as he serves our country.

Avy and Brady AVY AND BRADY…A NIGHT TO REMEMBER (AFTER THE TORNADO)

RealBride.HerStory Wedding rehearsal? It didn’t happen. As the wedding party gathered at the Palace Event Center for the rehearsal, the tornado alarms were sounded and everyone bolted. The next night, generators were fired up to provide electricity for the wedding- the venue had their own generators- luckily! Avy had no idea how the wedding she had planned for so long would turn out. How did it turn out? Avy says, “It was beautiful. Amazing.” For Information on Advertising call 405.216.0747

Avy and Brady wanted the reception to be “a night to remember” and provided guests with a buffet and cocktails. The cake stole the show! Wrapped in a profusion of trailing flowers- oranges, plums, greenery- it was beautiful. And, apparently, delicious. Made of a delectable combination of vanilla cake, red velvet and lemon, there was none left at the end of the night!

Avy says, “My Mom created a wonderful moment in time for us- after the tornado, I didn’t know what would happen. Because of the late start and uncertainty, she went to the Palace and started working so we wouldn’t be disappointed We were both overwhelmed with love and gratitude. My favorite moments were seeing Brady at the altar for the first time that day and also seeing all our loved ones and friends there to share this wonderful moment with us”. The perfect ending to their never ending love story.

Expert ADVICE ...

Bridal Fashion Wedding Attire…Finding Your Perfect Gown WI INTERVIEW WITH ALEX LONG, OWNER OF THE BRIDAL BOUTIQUE IN NORMAN, OK.

Oklahoma trends in the wedding industry tend to stay constant as Oklahoma brides stay true to their heritage. Brides in Oklahoma are still favoring the rustic, country chic and boots look although recently the movie The Great Gatsby has added a vintage, glamorous touch. This romantic look features a sleek, sophisticated styling. A sheath gown of silk or satin provides a slenderizing profile and timeless elegance. Low backs, luxurious fabrics, and beading embrace the Gatsby era but are re-interpreted for today’s bride into a modern “heirloom” collection. The Bridal Boutique in Norman, Oklahoma has been serving Oklahoma brides for 5 years and is rapidly becoming a frontrunner in the bridal business. What accounts for the surge? Alex Long, owner, says they offer a relaxed atmosphere and stress free environment, making the experience of finding the “perfect” gown an enjoyable one. Brides are welcome to bring their “advisory committee” along to help in the selection. Girls may take photos of themselves in the gowns- most bridal salons do not allow this. Alex and her long time assistant, Sarah Townsend, want the experience to be awesome- after all, this is one of the most important purchases of a girl’s life! Alex says of all the wedding gown styles - ball gown, A-line, sheath, fit and flare, mermaid - the fit and flare is the most flattering to most body types. Sizing is tricky, but Alex and Sarah have the experience to make sure a bride will not be disappointed. The Bridal Boutique has a lovely selection of accessories. Veils, jewelry, head pieces, shoes, garters, belts and more. Have you seen the Bridal Emergency Kit? Inside a chic little zippered bag is a sewing kit, toiletries, band aids, super glue, toothbrush, deodorant, nail polish, cotton swaps…great gift idea! The Bridal Boutique’s gowns are simply breathtaking in every hue, style and price range. How exciting for brides to find their gown in this charming, locally owned boutique in Norman, OK. www.bridalboutiqueoklahoma.com For Information on Advertising call 405.216.0747

Expert ADVICE... OUTDOOR LIGHTING Innovative Event Solutions… Be WOWED by Lighting Designs

Don’t we all enjoy meeting someone who is creative and innovative? Who is interested in his business and clients and enjoys making a difference in their wedding or event? Who brain storms with his clients until they have arrived at an idea that makes everyone Dewey Beene, smile and nod enthusiastically? Meet Dewey Beene, owner of Innovative Event Solutions Owner IES (IES)- lighting design specialists. For example: his conference table is a miniature lighted, pulsating dance floor. OK, WOW…super cool! When Heritage Hall School wanted a special table for their donors and sponsors, Dewey’s uber imagination produced this ingenious table and the look was unparalleled!

Dewey’s first piece of advice and one he stresses over and over: YOU MUST VISIT YOUR VENUE AT NIGHT. For an outdoor wedding, this is crucial. Water features, interesting landscapes, trees, and architectural features can fade into the background as the sunlight fades into darkness. Additionally, can guests find their way to the bathroom without pathway lighting? Are there steps or differences in terrain levels that might make someone trip or fall? IES professionals take care of every aspect of safety to ensure you and your guests are protected. Functional safety is the first priority, followed by impact illumination of the setting.

Brides and their families have long depended on IES to provide them with the lighting that will transform their event from “just attractive” to a movie set worthy event. Seeing is believing. A visit to the IES showroom will stop you in your tracks. The walls are hung with ginormous pictures of events IES has “done”. You will see local wedding venues and not believe your eyes because IES has literally “magically” transformed them with lighting. The outdoor lighting designs set the mood from the moment the guests arrive.

IES has provided countless brides stellar service and personal attention. When I asked Dewey what stands out in his mind over the years, his reply is “doing 16 weddings in one weekend”. With this in mind, I feel assured that IES can handle most any challenge and do it with confidence, flare, and the ability to “knock your socks off”. I know mine were! 41

WI Interview - A Bride’s Jou Abbey Volkman

We d d i n g C o o r d i nato r Abbey Volkman, wedding coordinator at one of Oklahoma City’s top venues, has worked with 100’s of brides to plan their wedding day and reception. She is well versed in all aspects of wedding planning from the tiniest details to the overall big picture. She has emerged as one of the most capable and creative wedding coordinators in Oklahoma City.

A BRIDE’S JOURNEY TO THE ALTAR...PART 2 IN A SERIES OF 4 Abbey, as you began to plan and get estimates from your favorite vendors, what did you find? If it was too expensive, what did you do to make it work for you? What advice would you pass along to other girls? Most of the vendors I priced out were in a reasonable price range. Of course, I have my head wrapped around how much things cost in this industry. For a girl who doesn’t know the true costs associated with catering, linens, floral, etc…I can only imagine how overwhelming it can be. Every girl (or guy) planning a wedding should: Take 20 minutes. Find a true “wedding budget breakdown” on the Internet. Invitations. I love the look of personalized invitations (hint: I love chevron). However, I recommend finding an invitations vendor. Much simpler. Handmade. If you can, and want to, make what you can comfortably manage. My Maid of Honor is making the flower balls that the flower girls will be carrying. It is so great to have her on board! Floral designers. Your flowers are such an integral part of a wedding- I wanted the best and most elaborate I could afford. I knew Tony Foss of Tony Foss Flowers and I knew if there was anyone who could make a single rose look “over the top“, it was Tony. He listened to me, made lists and notations, ask me questions, made drawings…I have no doubt at all that it will be as I envisioned and spectacular. Tony is the “go to” floral design artist in OKC and I know he will over deliver what he promises. Wedding attire. For bridal gown shopping, I believe it is so important to take someone with you that you love and trust. Be it your Mother, BF, aunt or in my case, my little sister who is my Maid of Honor. Her opinion was so important to me and I think she knows me better than For Information on Advertising call 405.216.0747

rney to the Altar...Part II anyone else (besides my fiancé). I got stuck in trying to decide on veils. There are long ones, short ones, mantilla style, jeweled, cathedral length, birdcage…I still haven’t decided but I will get there! For the groom’s attire, my fiancé is very fashion forward, so this pretty much dictated how the guys would dress. He is into the classy retro trend - he’s a suspenders and bow tie kind of guy. They will be so handsome! Photography. I don’t think people take into account how much time things tend to take. If you want great pictures (Trust me, you WANT great pictures), then you need to build time for them into your day. It’s a great idea to start when you ETA (Estimated Time of Altar), and work backwards. It is important to mesh well with your photographer. You’ll be smiling at them for 6-12 hours on your big day! Going back to protecting your timeyour photographer plays a large role in your day-of timeline. You, or your wedding planner, need to understand this and work together to make sure that the photos are a priority and so that you won’t be disappointed. My Mom, Sherry, of Sherry Lynch Photography, is an amazing photographer and over the years, I have gleaned invaluable help and advice from her. I am beginning to wrap up my planning and I want to share some thoughts with you. There are all kinds of brides - some get hung up on the vase size, a font, or a china pattern. Please step back and see how it fits into the big picture. We’ve all heard it said- at the end of the day, you are marrying your best friend and that’s all that really matters. And, I think all brides are just pretty darn excited about that first kiss! I’m giddy just thinking about it!!!

Put on your cowboy boots - you’re going to a rustic, country chic wedding that oozes charm and fun! Natalie married Jason at a venue that was the perfect backdrop as family and friends gathered to help share in this memorable evening. This wedding venue certainly does not conform to the usual tradition - exactly what Natalie wanted to add her own touches of whimsical charm. She and her family joined together to hand decorate and make the wonderful, quaint, country themed dÊcor.

Rugged, rustic wood and Mason jars were filled with splashes of color from the creative and talented hands of Tony Foss Flowers. Who couldn’t be wowed by Tony’s floral masterpiece above the cake? And, what a unique touch- the cake sat atop a wash tub! Such inspiration! The wedding and reception was fun, unique and a delight, but the true meaning of the evening was not lost. Natalie, wearing a Cinderella ball gown (and looking like a tiny, perfect doll) married her Prince Charming in front of the people who love and support them. Kim Stubbs recorded all the wonderful moments on the day that Natalie and Jason became Mr. and Mrs. Phillips.
