The original purpose of the eyebrow was to stop sweat, water, and dirt from falling into the eye. The eyebrow, additionally, has a leading role in human communication through facial expressions. Repeated shots of Botox and other youth serums may stunt its expressive nature, but its power should never be underestimated. Your newlywed face will forever be remembered in pictures, video and social media so the newly discovered cosmetology concept called eyebrow sculpting goes beyond the traditional shaping of the brow. People have been trying to modify their eyebrows’ thickness, length, width, overall shape, and look for centuries, even taking it to the extreme with 17th century mouse-hide eyebrow wigs, permanent eyebrow tattoos or even total hair removal. This last one still graces runways and trendy magazines with bleached or boldy shaven brows of models. In Hollywood, the motherland of extremes, The eyebrow shapes have names. Eric Monica

In the months prior to our engagement, my fiancé, Eric, cautiously advised me that I should start sending him ideas and pictures of ring styles I liked. I say cautiously because he knew his phone was about to blow up with images of diamonds. I, of course, took to this as enthusiastically as an athlete preparing for the Olympics: my Pinterest board was created, “Engagement Rings” became the highest searched term on Google, and we were hitting up the jewellery stores with excitement. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to me, a beautiful engagement ring had already started making its way from design to creation. One day, Eric came home and casually let me know that a good friend of ours and her husband had just moved to Port Hope. Being about an hour away, he suggested we go up to do a little shopping in the downtown area and spend the night at a great bed and breakfast whose owners just happened to be clients of his. On the afternoon of November 29th, we made our way to Summerhill Bed and Breakfast. The beautiful antique home was draped in British pride, and we received the warmest welcome from Debbie, the owner. After having a snack and settling into our room, Eric and I decided to tour the downtown area and get in some shopping before it got too dark and too cold. That

wonderful man of mine patiently waited for me to be done oohing and ahhing over fun trinkets and Christmas goodies – he even spent about an hour inside an awesome clothing store waiting for me as I tried on countless outfits. After being satisfied with my selections, we paid and left. Feeling hungry, we began planning our evening. We ran through a number of options and before we knew it, we were back in our cozy room. Then, before I could get both my boots off, Eric stopped me – he had a surprise for me. With my hands in his, he pulled out a shiny wooden box from his pocket and opened it to present me with a beautiful work of art, a ring he had designed and created with me in mind: me, the person he is choosing to spend the rest of his life with. For the following 20 minutes, all that came out of my mouth was a combination of sobs, squeals and giggles. Once we settled down, called our family and posted the happy moment on Instagram and Facebook, he took me downstairs to a separate dining area, which was decorated with candles and confetti just for us. As it turns out, the owners were in on the whole surprise! They cooked a wonderful meal for us and we enjoyed a fun, romantic evening together as he explained how his proposal plans came to fruition.

k d l Do I Need a Cake?

Weddings can be expensive and when deciding budgeting priorities, the wedding cake seems to carry a certain “must have” power. You may be asking yourself how the cake came to take a such a vital position in the wedding day festivities. History tells the story of how the tradition took shape: Ancient Romans broke a cake of wheat or barley over the bride’s head as a symbol of good fortune. (It wouldn’t be surprising if more than one bride said ‘ouch’ to that hit). The wedding guests would then gather the crumbs as a token of good luck. In Medieval England, the early form of a wedding cake was a pile of spiced buns stacked as tall as possible. If the bride and groom were able to kiss over the stack, it was a sign of lifetime prosperity.

In the seventeenth century, wedding cakes were made in pairs, one for the bride and one for the groom. The groom’s cake was a dark and heavy fruitcake and was served alongside the bride’s cake, and then given to the guests as a gift of good luck.

The true significance of wedding cake, it appears, is the promise of the blessings behind it, rather than the actual cake itself. We see this in modern day traditions; the cutting of the cake symbolizes the first joint task of the couple’s life together. The bride and groom feed each other the first slice to symbolize their vow to provide for each other. Finally the cake is shared with guests to spread the happiness from the couple to their friends and family. The cake holds the same meaning as the wedding ceremony itself, to share happiness and to celebrate the

beginning of a lifelong commitment. It’s not the number of tiers, the layers of fondant, or the flavour of cake that determines blessings. If financial constraints ever pose a limit, remember that there are no rules about your wedding. In fact, wedding cakes around the world are quite simple in comparison to the fondant tiered cakes commonly seen in Canada. In France, instead of cake, they serve a tall pyramid of creamfilled pastries covered in caramel. In Norway, bread topped with cheese, cream and syrup is folded over and served to guests. Greek couples prefer a flourless almond cake filled with vanilla custard, fruit, and covered with almonds. Perhaps the visually appealing cake pictured to the left, created by Fine Cakes by Zehra, can assist you when making decisions for your wedding! Remember, there are budget-friendly cake options, as well as pastries and other sweet alternatives that are available and will serve the same purpose as a wedding cake. Starting your new tradition is exciting and besides, nothing beats the taste of a sweet finishing touch to celebrate beautiful new beginning. Now, you don’t need a cake, but who doesn’t love cake? by Samantha Chu

did you know? “Royal icing” is given its name because at Queen Victoria’s wedding to Prince Albert, white icing was used to decorate the cake and its name has been used since. FA L L 2 0 1 4 |

Financial Health Check Financial security planning is a process, not a one-time event. It can be a detailed, complicated process, and, as in many other aspects of life, you’ll only get out of the process what you put into it.

Before you begin, you need to consider who will help you. Sound advice from a qualified, experienced financial professional can help you meet your financial goals. Trust is an important consideration when choosing your financial security advisor. Find someone who demonstrates an understanding of your personal and financial situation, with whom you feel comfortable working, and who has access to a wide variety of financial security products to meet your unique needs. Ask lots of questions and take the time you need to understand the information being

presented to you. Once you’ve chosen your financial security advisor, he or she will likely want to discuss your plans and goals for the future. These may change over time, but your financial security advisor needs some direction to help you work towards your goals. Partners should also be included in these discussions. It’s not uncommon for each partner to have different goals, or even to be surprised at their partner’s goals. Still, you should discuss your goals prior to your first meeting with your financial security advisor. Your goals may include: • Retiring comfortably (at what age, and to what kind of lifestyle) • Saving for major future purchases • Financing a child’s education or giving your child a financial head-start • Providing financial security for your family in event of death, disability or critical illness • Owning a cottage (and keeping it in your family) • Building a successful business (and planning for succession) Your financial security advisor also needs to know what you’ve accomplished financially to date to prepare an accurate, meaningful financial security plan. This includes your insurance policies, investment statements, group

page 12

| THE WEDDING PLANNER MAGAZINE

benefits details, pension statements, Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment, etc. If you own your own business, your business financial statements should also be provided. Only after receiving all relevant information can your financial security advisor make the appropriate recommendations. Once your financial security advisor has all the relevant data, he/she will prepare a financial security plan that will compare where you are today with where you want to be in the future. In some cases, if you’re on track to meeting your goals, your financial security advisor may suggest you continue doing largely what you’ve been doing. However, if you’re falling short of meeting any of your goals, your financial security advisor can provide recommendations to

help you address them, including: • Changing the types of investments you currently hold • Making additional investments • Purchasing insurance products • Examining financial security planning strategies specific to your situation If these recommendations make sense to you, your financial security advisor will assist you to implement them, helping you reach your goals. An annual review of your financial security plan is also necessary for several reasons: • To make changes to your plan as your goals and circumstances change • To take advantage of new financial security products • To help keep you on track Joseph Andre McCalmont is a financial security advisor with Freedom 55 Financial, a division of London Life Insurance Company. k d l Flowers As Paint Flowers As Paint, a company led by artist Brian Arditi, transforms floral arrangements from weddings and other significant occasions into gallery-worthy artwork. They take the physical beauty and brilliant engineering of everyday flowers and mould them into a tangible piece of art. This approach allows the memory of the event to live on in a way that compliments personal style. Arditi designs solely with the recipient in mind in order to create unique, individual pieces. His work strives to entertain while paying tribute to the natural beauty of the flowers and preserving precious moments for a lifetime− either in whole, in part, or in a million smaller pieces. Arditi takes flowers at any stage of their lives and transforms them into original pieces of work. The pigments extracted from flowers differ depending on their age and so the choices for styles will also change. A prime blossom will allow more possibilities in terms of creativity, but flowers that have been dried for years also yield beautiful results. Arditi turns pigments into paint to create totally unique pieces of artwork. Don’t panic if wedding flowers have already been thrown out! They can have a florist recreate a bouquet, and use this replica to create your personalized

piece. Flowers as Paint can add pieces of fabric from dresses, gems from tiaras, or even wedding invitations, making each piece more sentimental and dynamic.

Arditi and his team can produce almost anything your mind can imagine. In the past, they’ve used their art to create table centrepieces, stained glass, magnets, tables, tiles, and jewelry. Some tiles have even been used to tile kitchens. Interested in discussing the countless possibilities? Consultations are free and can be done in person or via webcam or telephone if necessary. They’ll listen to what you want and come up with the most desirable and effective way to execute your ideas. Since every piece is customized, prices will vary. Framing is not included and can be added for an additional cost, but many Flowers As Paint creations do not require framing. How do you receive and maintain your artwork? Flowers As Paint ships both nationally and internationally. Maintenance is very simple − just dust gently and keep out of direct sunlight. Feel free to check out their website flowersaspaint. com or their Instagram account @flowersaspaint.

Designer’s corner by Margarita Oudalova

The Glorious Crown

The crown itself has always been a symbol of status and dignity, worn by monarchs and deities to represent a plethora of regal attributes, including power, legitimacy, honour, immortality and righteousness. Aside from its traditional form, a crown can also be presented as a wreath made of flowers, leaves or thorns; this is where our interest lies.

items. Florists are trained to create flower halos and crowns, as are event designers. When you sit down with your floral or event designer, remember that to create a custom crown, the best thing is to get a visual. The designer should draw an image for you with all the desired details, as well as measure the circumference of your head and inquire about your hairstyle for the day.

Flower crowns have come a long way from being simple affairs of baby’s breath, Gypsophila and wax flowers adorning the heads of flower girls. Nowadays, a more rustic flower crown comes mixed with moss, ivy and succulents. Some flower crowns are adorned solely with garden roses, giving them the feeling of an English garden.

That’s a lot of details for some flower crown, right? As it should be! Your crown needs to be just perfect; it will be placed on top of your hairstyle in the morning and has to last through ceremony, pictures and dancing. Of course, you should ask your hair stylist to show you how you can take the crown down easily and put it back up (also easily) throughout your wedding day.

Now, who do you turn to for your custom flower crown? Before that question can be answered, consider what else you might want mixed into your crown. Maybe you want to add brooches, bling or pearls. You might also want to mix some fresh florals with some faux (especially if the fresh ones you are looking for are out of season), or you might want to incorporate fabric, ribbons or other sentimental

A Wedding Song

The MC clutches the microphone and his smooth voice fills the air, “Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Please stand and get ready to make some noise for the bride and groom as they enter onto the dance floor!”

Raucous dance beats pulsate with the vibrant light show displays. The crowd is on its feet furiously applauding. The couple then appears, their smiles radiating, the joy on their faces unmistakable. The lights dim, a hush goes over the crowd, and spotlights focus on the bride and groom, positioned in the middle of the dance floor. A dry ice fog lightly envelops the couple and the MC speaks once again announcing that the couple will now commence their first dance. A song plays; it draws you in with its soulful and wistful beauty. Its tune is unfamiliar, a melody that many have not heard before.

Originally created in 1982, “Our Wedding Day” was written by Kevin Flynn, as he saw a need for a custom wedding musical piece. Kevin’s wife, Lori, had a career path that had taken her to the Broadway stage and she has traveled far and wide, sharing the gift of her voice with the world. Kevin had worked in marketing and has also traveled the world, gaining professional experience as well as an admiration for the world’s cultures. After extensive research and careful consideration, they decided to launch their song publicly on January 1, 2014. This song can be performed by many different instrumental arrangements and genres and is unlike any Top 40 hit. A versatile piece, a solo singer can perform the song accompanied by an acoustic guitar or piano. Alternatively, it can be played by a full band - there are no rules as to when or where to play the sweet melodious harmony on your special day. What does the future hold for this vivacious musical duo? Perhaps the song will be translated into different genres, or perhaps there will even be a sequel track to add to this arrangement? Visit their website at www.weddingsongforyou.com to listen to the song, to learn more about Lori and Kevin and to purchase the song ($9.95) for your wedding celebration. Pinterest For My Wedding?

Chair • Chalkboard Wedding • Ceremony Wedding Planner • Frame

Whether you're a full-blown DIY bride, or you'd prefer to leave it to the professionals, you probably have ideas of how you’d like your wedding day to look. This is where Pinterest can come in handy. This virtual pin board site provides an efficient way to organize ideas and to express yourself. It makes wedding planning a breeze for everyone involved – if you know what it can help you do!

Sort It Out

kdl

The concept behind Pinterest is to collect and organize things that appeal to your own unique taste. Why not use it to figure out how you want your wedding to look? Create one board for your wedding, or a few separate ones for each category – flowers, reception venues, and ceremony – to prevent confusion. If you find something close to your vision, but can't find exactly what you want, use the description section to write down what you'd like to change. This will provide you with a clear image of what you envision for your wedding and keep you on track when it’s time to make purchases.

Share Your Vision

Explaining exactly what you want to your vendors can sometimes be difficult. Nobody’s imagination is going to be quite like yours, so a good way to make sure nothing gets lost in translation is to show people exactly what you want. Once you've got your ideas all sorted, print them, as well as any notes, and take them to your vendors – it's much harder to misunderstand a picture! This works for wedding planners too; this kind of preparation makes everyone's job easier, and will help your wedding planning go more smoothly.

Don't Forget Your Guests!

Whoever invented the idea of a box-store wedding registry was no doubt a genius, but sometimes it's nice to do things a little differently. A good way to keep it personal for your wedding is to use Pinterest as a sort of informal registry. How? Set up a board of unique things you'd like for your new home, or neat DIYs you think your guests would enjoy making, and see what they come up with. When guests create gifts instead of buying them, it makes the gift giving experience much more personal and leaves you with a sweet memory to cherish.

If you have guests who find it difficult to use the website, you can always set up a formal registry and leave the Pinterest one as a creative option. These are just a few ideas about the uses of Pinterest – there are many ways it can help you get started planning your perfect wedding. Have fun with it – express your vision and make your day as unique as you are. by Erin Green

How Do I Choose My Vendors?

Planning a wedding can get very overwhelming. When it comes to choosing your vendors, you want to make sure they can get the job done for a fair price. Consulting a wedding planner helps make these decisions easier as they have a list of reputable vendors they work with. They help choose companies that will give you the wedding of your dreams. However, if you aren’t sold on a wedding planner yet, here are some tips to help you sort through potential vendors.

Do Your Research

Most vendors have websites that list the services they offer. Make sure the vendor is easily reached in person and by phone. Online contact in convenient but an inperson meeting is always best.

Interview Vendors

Once you have narrowed down your selections, don’t be afraid to ask the vendor some important questions. We interviewed Aleksandra Lipatova of A.L. Wedding & Event Planning to gather just what those questions should be. 1. You should ask to see a portfolio of their work, especially for vendors such as photography, florals, and décor. This way you can get a sense of their style and see if it matches what you are looking for. 2. How long has the vendor been in business? Is this a small shop that just opened that may not have lasting power in the wedding industry? The worst case scenario is that the company you booked goes out of business and you are out your deposit and a vendor for your wedding! 3. Are they available for your wedding date? This seems like an obvious question but check with the vendor before you have a meeting to make sure they are available. 4. Do you provide samples? You want to be able to judge your vendor’s work before your wedding day. Ask for a food or cake tasting, samples of invites, or an invitation to an event a hall or DJ is hosting to get a feel for their work.

5. What is your timing for booking and what are your rates? Is there a deposit you need to put down? When is the final amount due? Cheaper almost never means better. Find out about any hidden fees, such as delivery charge, and how long before the wedding does the vendor need to be booked. The bottom line is to look for a style and quality that is reflective of your own and what you are looking for on your wedding day. Remember, your personalities need to mesh as you are entering in a long term “relationship” with this vendor, between 3 months to over a year, and you need to make sure the vendor is willing to listen to and follow your vision in a timely manner.

A.L. Wedding and Event Planning?

In 2012, Aleksandra was working as an event coordinator for York University, putting on festivals for students and collecting sponsorships, as well as working with various venues as a wedding assistant. She loved the long hours and little sleep, dreaming up ideas for lavish affairs. That September, she decided to venture off on her own after years of event design, planning and management. A painter since childhood, she had an appreciation for all things beautiful. Then, A.L. Wedding & Event Planning was born. Holding a degree in finance, Aleksandra not only is able to plan logistics for her clients, but also create and manage their budgets, alleviating the stress of her clients.

Final Advice from Aleksandra?

When shopping for a vendor, shop local. This is important if you are getting married in a facility near you. The vendor will be more familiar with the area and you will be supporting local businesses. If you have a friend who was married before you, ask what vendors they used. They will be able to give you an honest list of pros and cons for each vendor. In the end, trust your instincts. Only you know what you want. Let vendors your wishes so there are no surprises on either end. Feel out the vendor using the questions and make an informed decision based on their answers.

ldk Ayurveda Rituals Spa Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, is commonly translated as the “science of life” or “understanding of life”. It is the study of the human constitutions of the Five Great Elements, promoting balance as a key to health and happiness. As a bride-to-be, you may wonder how to balance your priorities while staying focused and enjoying each moment along the way. With all the emotions flowing through your body, the increased stress level of opinions from family and friends, and the added responsibilities of hosting such a large event, you need to find new and creative ways to release that tension. Ayurveda is Relationship Ayurveda is the understanding of natural law as it affects the body and emotions. Natural law (dharma) belongs to every entity in the universe. It is what creates attraction. This is the essence of Ayurveda – the science of life. There are five elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth, as well as the three body types: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The treatments are based on ancient healing concepts designed to release blocked emotions and stress. They help access the natural glow brides hope to have on their special day. Dosha knowledge, knowing your type or elements, helps you make lifestyle choices that balance, restore and rejuvenate body, mind, and soul. For every elemental constitution, a balancing treatment has been created with health, balance, beauty, and bliss as our focus. Discover Your Dosha (Ayurvedic Constitution/Type) First, discover your dosha by using our automated questionnaire accessible on our site: www.AyurvedaRitualsSpa.com Each dosha, just like each bride, benefits from nurturing. Ayurvedic practitioners create a customized healing journey with treatments including facials, body massage, and head massage. Brides benefit from beginning treatments three to four months before their wedding to assist them through their journeys of healing. The VATA Bride Your predominant elements are Air and Ether. You are excited, forever embracing change. You may doubt your choices and decisions or recreate your entire wedding day several times. Finding the perfect dress may be exciting but overwhelming because doubt often creeps in. You need tremendous support, nurturing and care to prepare for your wedding and may not

recognize that need. Vata body types have dry, dehydrated or aging skin, coarse hair and nails and feel cold, especially in the hands and feet. Make sure your wedding venue is warm and cozy. Bring a shawl to keep you warm throughout your entire wedding day. Their emotional state is anxious, restless, worrisome, curious, and/or doubtful. Ayurveda treatments use warmed herbal oils poured onto the “third eye” (middle of forehead) and massaged into the scalp and full body for deep relaxation and stress release. Avocados, red lentil powder, rose petals, and wild winter cherry powders are used as a natural exfoliant. These treatments will you leave feeling centered, calm, focused, allowing you to make solid decisions and avoid changes to your wedding plans. Calming the mind is important for Vata brides. Customized Ayurveda yoga routines are available to balance the mind with grounding and sedating postures along with a Vata reducing diet and a series of meditations and breathing techniques. The PITTA Bride Your predominant elements are Fire and Water. You strive to be perfect, organized and detailed but may feel frustrated with everything that needs to get done. You need to release, replenish, and cleanse away all stress and tension. Ayurveda offers cooling and soothing treatments to help balance your feverish planning. Pitta body types are hot and oily, can burn out under stress and require cooling and ventilation. Make sure your venue has great ventilation and your dress is light and cool. Ayurveda facial treatments focus on Pitta balancing, soothing redness, sensitivities, oily and congested pores with natural ingredients such as red sandalwood powders, wild asparagus root powders, mixed into organic yogurt and coconut milk. Deep upper back, neck and shoulder massages will relieve tension and stress while cool aromatic towels soothe your soul. The KAPHA Bride Your predominant elements are Water and Earth. You are sensual, romantic and dreamy, visualizing an intimate wedding with close friends and family. At times, you tend to everyone’s needs and neglect your own. Allow others to care for you and for you to be nurtured. Delays in planning and organizing are common among Kapha types, who have a relaxed approach to life and stress.

Make sure your dress is comfortable and flows with grace and ease. Your body can fluctuate between cold damp feelings and uncomfortable warmth. Light fabrics are recommended so your body can breathe. Your ideal venue is romantic and comfortable with easy means of controlling temperatures. Relaxing massages detoxify and help the lymphatic system move and clear toxins, helping in weight loss and reduced water retention. Dried herbal scrubs along with deep tissue massage can reduce or eliminate water retention. Receiving bodywork treatments twice weekly helps them attain optimum health and comfort. Ayurveda facials for Kapha brides balance oily T-Zones with deep pore cleansing and stimulating marma (pressure points) to energize and move stagnant energy. Fresh mango pulp, organic clays with orange peel powders and kelp exfoliate, freshen and cleanse the skin.
