Despite living in the same suburb with the same social circle, it took four years for these lovebirds to finally cross paths! They had a clear vision for their timeless black tie wedding from the outset, with Katrina putting her graphic design skills to work to create all of the stationery and signage. With fresh white blooms, textured foliage and romantic draping framing their seaside ceremony, the relaxed reception that followed featured roving canapĂŠs and a decadent display of over one hundred donuts for guests to enjoy.
Wedding Style “We decided to have a cocktail style wedding so our guests could mingle and just have fun! Since I was planning the whole thing interstate, being organised and ensuring our vendors were locked in early were a big priority for us. They created the vision I always wanted – an all-white, elegant and modern wedding. I loved seeing the evolution of the day come together.”
Take time out for yourself! I took three days off leading up to the wedding just to relax and enjoy some time around the craziness of wedding planning.
Best Advice “Surround yourself with people who support and love you. So many times I contacted my stylist, celebrant, bridesmaids and mum for advice or help and they were there every time. Also, prep an emergency kit for the day – my mum created one for us and it was used so many times! It had everything from spare socks, to Hollywood tape and a full sewing kit.

These high school sweethearts married on their ten year anniversary, and while the weather didn’t go exactly to plan, nothing could wipe the smiles off their faces as they tied the knot at a beautiful estate. The first wedding dress Giselle laid eyes on was the one she knew she would wear down the aisle (and during a quick stop at McDonald’s post-ceremony, as was their tradition!). Opting not to have a bridal party except for their adorable dogs, they were surrounded by friends and family at a table for two for their modern reception.
Make sure you book an amazing photographer and videographer that you are comfortable with. Reliving our wedding day is the greatest thing!
Sweet Ceremony “We wrote our own wedding vows, which made it feel so personal. We adorned the arch we constructed with florals and draping – it was special to be married under something we built together. Beau lost his grandparents whom he was incredibly close with, so we had their wedding bands melted down to create his. It was such a lovely sentiment to remember them by.”
Meaningful Menu “We arranged for ‘Beau’s Burger Bar’ to be set up for cocktail hour – he has always been obsessed with them so we thought it was fitting! I also organised three cheese gnocchi for entree as it’s my favourite meal ever, and we made a donut wall for dessert. Don't stick to normal traditions if you don’t want to – create your own!”

After a proposal in a national park, it’s no surprise these two sought a lush forest feel for their wedding! With friends scattered across the world, they picked a date close to Christmas so everyone could stay for the holidays and gave their bridal party the freedom to choose their own looks in classic navy and white. Flipping their industrial ceremony space into a feasting style reception helped create the atmosphere of a shared family meal, with good food, wine and music on the menu.
Ceremony Style “We wanted our ceremony to feel intimate and simple, so we just had Nick and I with the celebrant while our bridal party took the front row seats. We heard ‘Heartbeats’ by José Gonzalez on the radio and decided then and there that was the song to walk down the aisle to. We were married under overhead florals and gold pendant lights with candles in the background.”
Personal Touches “Nick’s grandma Eileen loved a good Irish whisky, so we invited guests to have one to honour her memory. We also had a number of family members with hearing difficulties, so we printed out the speeches for them. Finally, my parents purchased a painting as part of our wedding gift. The artist painted the scene on the day and guests could contribute to it and write messages on the back. Such a great idea for something different!”
Planning Tips 1. Ask lots of questions and make sure your non-negotiables are understood and looked after. A lot of effort at the start to choose the right suppliers makes it so much easier at the end! 2. Work out what the two or three key pieces are to you and then spend well on those. Once you have the impactful and important things in place, just budget down the rest!
Enjoy the process as much as possible and don’t worry if things don’t go 100% to plan. We had a number of small issues pop up, but I was the only one who would've noticed.

This lovely couple got engaged a stone’s throw away from their wedding venue and soon planned a boho luxe celebration with a spectacular tipi as its centrepiece. Their goal was to have everything in place six months before so they could kick back and enjoy the rest of their engagement. Live music wasn’t initially on their radar, but on the advice of their venue they arranged an acoustic duo who turned DJ and never looked back! They got their guests involved by asking them to nominate a song that would get them on the dance floor as part of their RSVPs.
Planning Priorities “It was really important to us to have an unplugged ceremony as we are firm believers of being in the moment. Following this, guests were treated to ‘prawns on the lawn’ and fresh oyster shucking. Damien and I planned the timing of the day so we didn’t have to rush off for photos. We were able to mingle over drinks and nibbles and even did a champagne tower before we headed off. For the reception, we didn’t give our stylist much in the way of detail but had to have metallic accents, lighting and candles. I believe when working with creatives, it’s good to give them free reign – that’s when the best work is done!”
Trust your instincts and don't allow others' opinions to influence your plans - stay true to you!
Finding the Dress “I had tried on 15 gowns and still couldn’t imagine falling in love with ‘the one’, but as soon as I slipped it on, I knew it was something special. To this day, I wish I could just wear my dress over and over. I always thought I would do a ‘trash the dress’ session or sell it, but the thought now makes me want to cry!”

Tessa & Mike captured by gemma clarke photography
Wanting a rustic outdoor wedding after five years together, Tessa and Mike combed through a decade of weather data to find a date with the lowest chance of rain - and it totally paid off! Building their celebration from the ground up on picturesque farmland, they had a close friend officiate their ceremony and decorated a clear marquee with fairy lights, greenery garlands and burgundy floral fireworks for a spectacular reception under the stars.
Family Favours “As our grandmothers were unable to be at our wedding, we wanted to acknowledge them. Mike’s grandmother had an award winning succulent garden, and I have special memories of mine making jam from apricots grown in her garden, so we selected these as favours to represent them.”
Best Advice 1. Stay true to what you want on your wedding day. One thing we compromised on was music because we tried to match what we thought our guests would want to dance to. In the end I don't think we enjoyed the dancefloor as much as we could have. 2. Don’t let anyone rush you into buying your wedding dress. This is a process that requires a lot of thought, so don’t give in to time pressures or discounts – be sure of your decision. 3. Choose a bridal party you can count on. Each helped us in the lead up or on the day and we couldn’t have pulled off such a beautiful day if it wasn’t for all of them. Danielle & Damien captured by madelyn holmes photographics
After a New York City proposal with her grandmother’s ring, Danielle and Damien were excited to work on their wedding plans together. They made the day their own, doing away with a traditional ceremony aisle and sharing the maid of honour and best man duties between their bridal party. The manicured lawns of a heritage listed property played host to cocktails, lawn games and even a taco bar, with vibrant blooms delivering the finishing touch to this stylish celebration!
We chose to ditch a lot of the formal traditions so it was a party we would have loved to go to, even if we weren’t the bride and groom.
Garden Party “Our garden ceremony was in a beautiful courtyard area. We opted for a cocktail style reception but had plenty of seating so our guests could choose to sit, stand and mingle as they pleased. We had a glasshouse marquee on the lawn, with warm festoon lights throughout and wine barrels scattered in front to use as bar tables. My favourite styling element was the lounge area we set up on the lawn, or maybe it was the giant floral installation hanging over our bridal table. It’s hard to choose!”
Words of Wisdom “Include your fiancé in the whole process, it’s too special a time not to share! Enjoy every moment and splurge if you really want something – you will only regret it if you don’t.”
