T
he first dance is most symbolic. The journey to this point, the chemistry, the balance. The leap of faith. The commitment. The combination and natural choreography of two different rhythms realised.
Liz Tyler, designer jewellery maker, appreciates this progression when creating exquisite, tailor-made rings for many wedding couples. Whilst working in London, Liz often went to see contemporary dance at Sadlers Wells in London. “I loved to dance & saw in contemporary dance, where one movement flows into another, my main source of inspiration in my own designs.” After gaining her degree in silversmithing & jewellery design, her leap of faith into business came after a summer school in the states taught her special techniques that allowed the ‘curvaceous’ ideas in her head to be moulded into reality with metal and jewels. Now in her twenty fifth year of business, she has been asked to create a broad spectrum of commissions, from individual engagement ‘and wedding ring sets, a full range of jewellery including bold dress rings angled for the right hand set with fabulous coloured gemstones and sculptural silverware. Her most extravagant comission was for an “engagement ring for a girl in New York, set with a certificated 2 carat fine oval diamond in platinum with brilliant cut diamond shoulders, but many of my commissions are far more modest.” As an experienced diamond sorter, Liz takes great care selecting the diamonds she uses and offers certificated diamonds over .50cts to guarantee their unique quality. What Liz enjoys the most is designing specifically, individually for clients, “getting to know them, finding out what they are looking for, sourcing the diamond or gemstone of their wishes and making my designs a reality”.

There is a wide range of precious metals and stones to choose from, for a variety of reasons. Diamonds were originally used in wedding rings, called the ‘Venus stone’ by the ancients, as they were compared to the shining beauty of the planet in the night sky. Like the Goddess herself who was dedicated to love, the diamond became synonymous with the eternal commitments of sweethearts, the mysterious inner fire symbolising passion & love. As Liz points out to me, “the rings are the only wedding items purchased that will be worn every day as a reminder of their marriage and their special day. So it’s worth choosing something individual, a bit different, a modern classic that you have taken great care choosing to reflect you and your personality.” As you have given the same consideration to choosing your partner and every wedding detail up to this first dance of your married life, we recommend you choose a jewellery designer who can capture & mould it in her fingertips for eternity. Liz will be exhibiting at Dorset Art Weeks 24th May -8th June and also at Somerset House London 24-28th June.
