Fall Bible Study Sign-Ups Now Open! Monday Morning Women’s Bible Study - Authentic: Developing the Disciplines of a Sincere Faith This 7-week study by James MacDonald introduces believers to spiritual disciplines that will help them develop a closer walk with God. What does it mean to live as an authentic follower of Jesus? Learn to follow His example by practicing the spiritual disciplines He used to maintain a close relationship with His Father. Discover how much you can grow in Christ-likeness as you pursue the practices of Bible study, prayer, fasting, fellowship, service, and worship. Member workbook $13 available at the first session. Mondays at 9:00 a.m. Contact leader Louise Padfield at lpadfield8@gmail.com. Tuesday Evening Women’s Bible Study - A Woman Who Doesn’t Quit: 5 Habits from the Book of Ruth Beginning September 6th, we will walk through the Book of Ruth, focusing on the Moabite woman’s five practical habits that kept her eyes on God: Ruth accepted the assignment of refinement, followed through on her commitments despite her feelings, remained open to the movement of God, gave others what they needed, and moved forward in faith. Over this 6-week Bible study that includes a workbook for personal study and has video downloads, we will dig into God’s Word, pray with one another and continue to grow in our knowledge of the Bible to apply His truths to our daily lives. Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at the Hemby House, with leader Heather Brown. Contact her at august297@netzero.net. Wednesday Morning The Circle Maker In Matthew 21, Jesus tells us, “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” However, most of the time we pray, we only ask for the small things. We’re afraid to ask for what we really want, or to be passionate in our petitions. What impossibly big dream is God calling you to draw a prayer circle around? In The Circle Maker, Mark Batterson introduces you to the possibility of a deeper, more passionate, persistent, and more intimate prayer life. Sharing powerful insights from the true legend of Honi the circle maker, a first-century Jewish sage whose bold prayer ended a drought and saved a generation, you will learn a new way to pray. Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. beginning September 7 at the Bonds Grove campus, with leader Rev. Amy Hutchison. Workbooks are $12 and available at first session. Sign up by e-mailing Sandra McKee at sandra.mckee@weddingtonchuch.org. Continued Page 8

WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections . Reverend Dr. Terry L. Moore Koinonia – Sharing Life Together (Acts 2:42 NRSV) They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. For a church to be successful in fulfilling our calling, there are many attributes that must be present. There is to be preaching and teaching, there is to be worship and the sacraments, there is to be ministry and service, and there is to be fellowship. In Acts 2, we have the beginning of the Church. There is a celebration of Pentecost with the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. Luke, who wrote the book of Acts, reminds us that as the church grew, they “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” The Greek word for fellowship is koinonia (koy-nohn-ee’-ah). Koinonia means fellowship, sharing, partnership, communication. In other words, koinonia is when the church comes together to share life with each other, to fellowship with one another, to talk to each other. Sharing life with other Christians is vital. It is an element of the church that we cannot afford to leave out. This is one of the important elements of our Wednesday night dinners during the school year. The dinner meal is a great time for koinonia. This is also why I think it is so important that Sunday School classes, Life Groups, and ministry teams meet occasionally just for koinonia. Page 2

It is one of the elements that make our Kings & Queens group so successful. At our Bonds Grove campus, we meet once a month for a Fellowship Luncheon. Our staff goes to lunch together each Tuesday. It is more than a meal, it is koinonia. It is a time of fellowship, a time of sharing. It is a time to be a part of one another’s lives. There is an old joke that the United Methodist Church edited the scripture to say, “’two or three are gathered,’ there we will eat.” On Sunday, August 21, we will have a “Sunday Funday.” It will be a time to welcome and greet our new Associate Pastors, the Rev. Amy Hutchison and the Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez. We will have a cookout, games, and fellowship. It is a great time for the entire church from our various services and campuses to come together as the body of Christ. We will experience koinonia. I hope you will plan to join us. We are a family. Koinonia is essential to our being who God has called us to be. It is one of the key elements of the church. In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Senior Pastor

Prayer Ministry at Monroe Campus Prayer together has been such a unifying experience at our Monroe campus. We began to gather on Wednesday July 13 and plan to continue every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Most of the people attending are from the neighborhood and many are parents of the children who attended VBS! On our first meeting, 12 people attended and by the second we had 22. In addition, men from the community have begun to join for prayer Saturdays at 6:00 a.m. I want to thank Pastor Leroy Henry and Salvador Ávila for their leadership as we grow through prayer at Weddington in Monroe. All are welcome to join.

New Ministry Hands Team Forming “Hands of Jesus Team” Jesus told us that we should love our neighbor as ourselves. The mission of this new team is to love our neighbors through service to the terminally ill, their families and care givers. There will be three main committees to help fulfill our vision for care: 1. Personal Patient Support: This ministry will provide a trained person (through Hospice training) that will focus on the individual patient and their emotional and spiritual needs. These patients can be residents of a Union County Facility or home based. We will also provide one on one support to people in our congregation who are seriously ill. 2. Special Projects: This ministry will have a variety of focuses including service to caregivers of patients. Caregiving projects will be coordinated with the Union County Hospice Volunteer coordinator to do specific jobs that have been vetted through the social workers or nurses of Hospice. 3. Resource Pantry will support the Personal Patient Support and Special Projects committees as well as Hospice directly. This pantry will provide physical needs such as Ensure, or pajamas for the patients and caregivers. Additionally, a monthly hospitality basket to Union County Hospice will be provided for visitors and in house patients. Please prayerfully consider being a part of our team as we seek to make a difference in the lives of the terminally ill and their families. If you would like more information about this team or are interested in becoming a team member, contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office. 704-846-1032 or ed.briggs@weddingtonchurch.org. Page 4

Children and Youth Ministries Youth Ministry . Charlie Brown & Rev. Meredith Hinton July Mission Trips Throughout the month of July, we have had students serving beyond our community in Guatemala and in Atlanta. Some of our high school students traveled to Guatemala to do mission work in Guatemala City. They served in various capacities such as relationship building, painting, praying for the community, and visiting people’s homes. The 20 students and volunteers were blessed to have the opportunity to be the physical presence of Jesus Christ in an area so different from Weddington. It was truly a life-changing experience and one full of God’s love. We also were blessed to send 35 students and adults to Atlanta to serve those facing hunger and homelessness. We have had a month full of blessings. We are excited for our 6th grade mission trip, SERVE, which will be held August 5-7 here at Weddington UMC. Our 6th grade students are invited to spend the weekend with us and learn about how we are called to be involved in mission work here in our community. We will spend Friday and Saturday nights serving with the folks at the Monroe Campus. We will share meals together, work outside, and pray with people in the community. We will all worship together on Sunday here at Weddington. The cost of the trip is $40. Please contact Tonya Tapp, Meredith Hinton, or Charlie Brown for more info.

Fall Bible Study Continued ... Wednesday Morning (cont.) Women’s Bible Study - The Armor of God All day, every day, an invisible war rages around you--unseen, unheard, yet felt throughout every aspect of your life. A devoted, devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you: your heart, your mind, your marriage, your children, your relationships, your resilience, your dreams, your destiny. But his battle depends on catching you unaware and unarmed. If you’re tired of being pushed around and caught with your guard down, this study is for you. Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. in the Hemby House beginning September 7. Contact leader Judy Thomas at jthomas1182@carolina.rr.com. Women’s Bible Study - Jesus, Continued… Why the Spirit Inside You is Better Than Jesus Beside You Jesus promised His disciples that His return to heaven was to their advantage because the Holy Spirit could then come to live inside of them. How many of us consider our connection to the Holy Spirit so strong and so real that we would call His presence in us better than Jesus beside us? Together we will learn to relate to the Holy Spirit in new ways, and you will see how you can have a satisfying, powerful relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. This is a 10-week study that will begin September 7 and meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:30- Noon in the Fellowship Hall. Contact leader Marty Cook at marty@cookfamily.com.

Wednesday Evening Unanswered: Lasting Truth for Trending Questions At some point in our lives, we all wrestle with questions of life and faith that don’t have easy answers. The purpose of this study is to “help Christians be equipped , as thoughtful ambassadors of Jesus to respond to tough questions in a way that attracts people to the truth of Jesus Christ and the Word of God.” Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. beginning on September 7 with leader Rev. Mark Curtis.

There are some exciting things going on with our Weddington Christian Counseling Center. Currently, we are looking towards arranging for the Sanctuary Counseling Group, formally the Methodist Counseling Center, to oversee our counseling ministry. The benefits of this partnership are numerous. Sanctuary Counseling Group would handle administrative tasks such as the processing of insurance and the scheduling of appointments. They will also offer accountability and support to the counselor who is assigned to our counseling center. The clergy will have input on which counselor comes to Weddington. Once a contract is accepted by both parties, the process of obtaining a counselor will begin. Please keep all our plans in your prayers as we seek to grow our counseling ministry.
