Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Why I Teach Disciple Bible Study For many years I have taught Disciple Bible Study. I invite you to join me this year. Disciple 1 is an intensive overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. I have taught this class for many reasons. Primarily, because we believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and contains all that is necessary for our salvation. It is the primary authority of our faith and our lives. Through the scripture, God reveals God’s self to us and by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, can reveal to us a fresh word from God in our lives today. It contains our faith. I teach the Bible because many of us have never really engaged the scripture in a systematic study from Genesis to Revelation. I teach the Bible because many of us know enough to understand our faith in Jesus Christ, but may not be able to defend our faith when challenged or be able to recognize a distortion of the scripture in the teachings of others. According to the 2014 "The State of the Bible" report by Barna Group and American Bible Society, a majority of U.S. adults (81 percent) said they consider themselves highly, moderately or somewhat knowledgeable about the Bible. Yet less than half (43 percent) were able to name the first five books of the Bible. The statistics are similar to the previous 2013 report which also showed that only half knew that John the Baptist was not one of the 12 apostles. (Christianity Today, Biblical Illiteracy by the Numbers Part 1: The Challenge: How well do American Christians know their Bibles? by Ed Stetzer 2014)

I teach the Bible because most of us want to read it more, but need encouragement, a plan, and accountability to do Page 2

so. In the 2017 “The State of the Bible” report by Barna, “More than half of all adults wish they read the Bible more often (58%).” We want to provide that opportunity. In a 2014 LifeWay Research Study, only 45% of people who attend church regularly read the Bible more than once a week, 36% once a week or at least once a month, and 18% of church attendees rarely or never. It is not due to access to the Bible. The American Bible Society study in 2017 stated that 9 of 10 American homes have a Bible and the average home has three Bibles. I hope you will join me for this study of God’s word. If you have taken Disciple 1, we have so many Bible studies with phenomenal teachers and leaders. We have daytime and evening studies. We have short-term and long-year. We hope you will join us as we seek to grow in our faith and our walk with Jesus Christ. Psalm 119:105 (NRSV) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 2 Timothy 3:14-17 (NRSV) 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16 Samaritan's Feet: 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Process and prepare shoes that will be distributed around the world in an effort of creating a world with “zero” shoeless children. Please bring either a $10 donation or a pair of new children’s athletic shoes and socks. Meet in the church parking lot.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 17 Operation Reach Out Community Garden: 9:30-11:30 a.m. (tilling) 12:30-2:30 p.m. (planting) Help till and plant vegetables in this community garden which helps to feed some of the hungry in Union County. Monroe Campus Children's Activity: 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Monroe Fellowship Hall Day 3 of 3 in which we will offer activities for the children in our Monroe Campus community. Participate in making crafts, sharing fellowship, and serving food. Turning Point: 2:00 p.m. Meet at our Monroe Campus Fellowship Hall with handmade or purchased children’s blankets and stuffed animals and make bags to give to the children who walk through the door at Turning Point. House of Pearls: 6:30-9:00 p.m. Engage in fellowship and craft-making with the residents of this Christian transitional halfway house, which helps women rebuild their lives after being homeless or previously incarcerated. The crafts are sold to help sustain the cost of the women's residency. Meet by the fountain at the Sanctuary.

Operation Reach Out Lunch: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Prepare and serve lunch to some of our neighbors who are hungry in Union County, where they can come each day to hear God’s word and enjoy a meal together. Crisis Assistance: 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Monroe campus Fellowship Hall Prepare food boxes to help Crisis Assistance in offering an assortment of items from their food pantry to those in need.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 19 Monroe Campus Neighborhood CleanUp: 10:00-12:00 p.m. Join us as we come together, with our neighbors of the Monroe Campus, to help beautify the neighborhood as we walk in teams to “clean-up” where needed and accessible. We will have water stations and free t-shirts! Meet at the Monroe Campus Fellowship Hall. We will collect donation items for several of our service projects on two weekends, July 29 and 30 and August 5 and 6, from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Drop off will be in both Helms Hall and the FLC. Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs News and Announcements Stephen Ministry Taste and See Stephen Ministers truly make a difference in one's life. After my wife Brenda died, the church where I was serving at the time unofficially assigned me a Stephen Minister. This person met with me once a week for lunch. He served as a support to me in the midst of my grief. Sometimes we would talk about my grief; sometimes we wouldn't. It was a valuable time in my life that I thank God for. - Rev. Ed Briggs Maybe you too would like to make a difference in someone's life by becoming a Stephen Minister. We're having a Taste and See informational event on Sunday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hemby House where you can find out more of what it means to become a Stephen Minister. Opening Doors Adult and Teen Challenge Event Please join us for a wonderful evening of fellowship as we strive to heighten awareness about the rising and serious issue of drug abuse in our community among both teens and adults. The event will be on Friday, August 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Southbrook Church with dinner, music, and guest speaker Rev. Joel Jakubowski. Listen and learn how the Adult and Teen Challenge Program is working to address this issue and restore those impacted by addiction, and their families, back to overall health. Adult and Teen Challenge offers Christ-Centered, faith based solutions for youth, adults, and families struggling with life-controlling problems such as addiction. Concerned with the body, mind, and spirit of those who seek their help, they endeavor to help people become more mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well, and spiritually alive. Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Rev. Mark Curtis Let Your Life Speak by Parker J. Palmer There are seasons in life where we wonder, “Why am I here?” or “What should I do?” Merriam Webster defines vocation as “the work that a person does or should do.” In his book, Let Your Life Speak, Parker Palmer looks at vocation from a different perspective. Vocation, he says, is “not a goal to be achieved but as a gift to be received. It comes from a voice in here calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God.” So often we struggle with issues of self-esteem, self-worth and value because we define ourselves by the world's standards and use the expectations of the culture around us to narrate who we are and who we are to be. In this work, Palmer wrests our weary wandering back from “out there” and brings it into the place where it was always meant to be, a personal relationship between God and each of us, formed and informed by the context of a loving community of faith. Over many years I have found Palmer’s writings to touch a deep place in my spirit. He writes and speaks in a way that is inviting and eye-opening, like a good friend over coffee, who reveals something about yourself you never realized. I invite you to drink deeply from the soulful reflections of Parker J. Palmer. -Rev. The Nicene Creed Bible Study, Wednesday Mornings 9:30 - 11:00 a.m., with leader Rev. Mark Curtis Every Sunday in our worship, we confess the Apostles’ Creed. But that is not the only creed. In fact, throughout the church worldwide, you are more likely to encounter the Nicene Creed on Sunday morning. In this seven-week study, we will explore the historical context for why the creed was written, it’s relationship to other creeds, and the meaning it has for our faith and relationship with God today. All are welcome. Starts September 6 at Bonds Grove campus Fellowship Hall. Bible 101: Where do I start? Bible Study, Wednesday Evenings 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., with leader Rev. Mark Curtis I met someone for coffee a few weeks ago who shared that in all their years of attending church, they had never participated in a Bible study because they didn’t “know enough about the Bible.” It took great courage for my friend to share this with me. This course is for that person and anyone else who has never stepped foot in a Bible Study or is perhaps too embarrassed to admit what they don’t know. Together, we will learn what the Bible is and is not. By the end of the class my hope is to remove any shame or stigma associated with not knowing enough and to help people overcome their fear of The Book. The most important aspect of this class in my mind will not be learning information about the Bible. Rather, the aim is learning to be in relationship with the God revealed in and through the Bible. Children’s Ministry . Carolyn Nelson News and Announcements Vacation Bible Camp at Weddington and Monroe Wow! What a fun couple of weeks we have had. Over 460 children were blessed at our Weddington campus and 35 at our Monroe campus with a week filled with Bible stories, worship, games, crafts and food. A BIG thank you to all of our many volunteers—over 165 of them! We all look forward to next year’s camp. Sunday Funday We will have our second annual Sunday Funday on Sunday, August 20 at the FLC from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00p.m. Put on your bathing suits, grab your beach towel and lounge chair, and come over for a really fun afternoon. We will have food trucks, water slides for the little ones as well as the older kiddos, fun games, music, bingo, dunk tank and so much more! Want to help with this event? Send Carolyn an email and choose your time slot: 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, and clean up crew at 6:00 p.m. JAM (Jesus and Me) We will have our kick off on Wednesday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m. in Helms Hall. This program is available for those children who turn age 4 by August 31 through rising 5th graders. More information to come.

July Reflections You know the saying, "Time flies when

you're having fun?" That couldn't be a better description of the month of July. Our youth ministry has been rocking and rolling over this month. We sent a team of 28 to Costa Rica for two weeks. While we were there, we did construction and built relationships with the kids of the area through holding a VBS at the Methodist church in Belen. We also sent a team of 42 to Georgia for a week to do construction projects for folks in the Golden Isles area. In addition to these mission trips, we've also held regular youth Bible Study and Sunday night gatherings. It's been a fun and worshipful month for us all. I've been overwhelmed by the depth of faith our youth have. We are all on a faith journey and Charlie and I are glad to walk alongside some of the best youth around. The month of August will be exciting for us as we look toward our rising 6th grade mission trip: Serve. We are also looking forward to the Great Week of Service, Sunday Funday, and our Summer Soak! Evangelism Ministry . Rev. Amy Hutchison News and Announcements Silent Witness Items Silent witnessing is about offering an easy way to tell neighbors about your church. When you wear a shirt, carry a bag, or use a coffee mug in public, with our church logo or name, you are letting others know your beliefs without saying a word. Items are available in the sanctuary information center or in the office as well as via Lands End (for clothing). We have samples of some Lands End items available in the Information Center, as well as some discounted items. Women's Fall Retreat - November 3-5

Prayer is an important part of the life of our church. By it we worship and praise the Lord, and thank Him for His goodness. By it, we seek his wisdom for our ministries and leadership. We seek the Lord to send out workers into His harvest field. We ask God to open hearts of those who have not yet responded to His salvation and forgiveness.

How deeply are you rooted in your faith? What can we do to go from a tiny seed to a mighty oak tree and help others grow their roots deeper and stronger along the way?

By it we seek God to bring about the changes in our lives and church to advance His kingdom. By it we receive the wisdom for daily decisions. By it we receive direction for confusing situations. We seek His healing blessing for those who are in need. We seek healing for our community and the nations. Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Philippians 4:6 Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 May the nations praise you, O God. Church Announcements Meet Weddington Sessions

Wednesdays @ Weddington

Interested in becoming a part of the Weddington UMC family? As your clergy, program staff, and fellow Christians, it will be our privilege to grow and serve together. We request that anyone interested in membership attend one of our Meet Weddington Church sessions.

Join us for a church-wide fellowship meal in the Family Life Center on Wednesdays September through May. Meals are served from 5:00-6:15 p.m. Cost is $5 per person, $20 max for families.

At Meet Weddington, you will enjoy an informal time of fellowship, meet the pastoral and ministry staff, hear an overview of the ministry and mission of the church and get answers to any questions you may have about Weddington UMC.

Meet Weddington Church sessions are usually held on the 4th Sunday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center Multipurpose Room. The next meeting will be August 27.

Weddington Kids Fall/Winter Consignment Sale Mark your calendars for the Weddington Kids Consignment Fall/Winter sale on August 11 and 12. The sale is 100% volunteer run and is not possible without WUMC member support. Registration is now open to volunteers! Our Family Life Center and Youth Center will be packed with more than 30,000 gently used items for a fraction of the retail price from several hundred consignors. Shop for back to school, early Christmas shopping, or just to get some great deals! The sale ranges from newborns to teens and you will find name-brand clothes, furniture, books, toys, bikes, equipment, and more. We need over 350 volunteer shifts filled to be able to welcome thousands of shoppers and have a successful sale. Please consider joining the fun as a helper and shopper. We can definitely find a spot for your strengths! We need strong muscles for heavy lifting and warm friendly faces for greeting and talking to our shoppers all while serving our mission of being the hands and feet of Jesus. The sale continues to bless our community. The bi-annual Kids Consignment sale raises money that supports the church and local missions. Union County charities such as Operation Reach-Out, Turning Point, and House of Pearls, as well as Camp Lurecrest, Matthews Help Center, UC Crisis Assistance, UC Community Shelter, The Closet of Southbrook Church, Dressed for Success, and Help Crisis Pregnancy Center are examples of organizations that benefit from the success of the Weddington Kids Consignment Sale through monetary gifts and unsold item donations from generous consignors. Within the church, money is allocated to the general budget, scholarships for youth mission trips, a youth college scholarship, children’s ministries, the preschool and Weddington Christian Academy, and to United Methodist Women outreach programs, to name a few.
