Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Getting Ready for Christmas Our daughter and son-in-law moved into their first home this year. It is an exciting time in their lives. On Thanksgiving, they hosted family for the traditional Thanksgiving meal. It was a special time to share their new home with family. They had worked on the yard during the fall. They had new chairs on the front porch. Everything in the house was immaculately cleaned.
Advent is also about getting ready for the return of Christ. We live in the “in-between” times. We are between the first coming of Christ, Christmas, and the second coming, the return of Christ. If Jesus was to return today, would we be excited or terrified? Are there things we would want to get right before He returned? If so, this is the season to reflect, to change, and to prepare.
The meal was prepared. We fried the turkey together. It was perfect. All the sides were prepared. What a feast! The home was decorated for the event. It was an important day. Family was coming to share Thanksgiving. To give thanks to God for all the blessings we have received.
I invite you to enter this sacred season of Advent. A time of preparing to celebrate once again God’s amazing gift to the world. I invite you to get ready for Christmas, the Christ-mass, the celebration of the Christ child. I invite you to get ready for the return of Christ, the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. Our God so loves us that He came to live among us. Our God so loves us that He will return again to receive all who believe to himself so that we may live with God forever.
It takes a lot of work to prepare for a special event. But in the end, it is worth it. Advent is about getting ready for a special event. God so loved us, that God chose to come and live among us in the flesh. In Advent, we get ready to celebrate God’s coming to us again. We prepare for Christmas. But it is not simply about decorating the house, preparing a meal, and buying presents. It is about preparing our hearts and our lives. Advent is about checking in with our souls to see what may need to be cleaned, reorganized, or forgiven. Is there someone we need to forgive? Is there something that is interfering with our relationship with God? Where do we need to make room for the Christ-child in our lives? It is about preparing to receive once again this special gift of God’s grace.

Adult Ministries Adult Discipleship Ministry . Patsy Sorrell Making Connections Here at Weddington Church, we talk a lot about the importance of being intentional about growing in faith and the importance of our church “family.” Relationships are important – they give us a sense of belonging, enable us to enjoy good times together, and care for one another when life gets bumpy. But they don’t just happen without effort and a time and place to connect with others. If you’re looking to meet new people and find ways to connect with others in life and faith, here are a few ways to consider for taking that next step: Come early or hang around after worship on Sunday morning and share a cup of coffee and other light refreshments in Helms Hall and/or the Family Life Center. Pick up a copy of Connections, our Adult Ministry guidebook that is designed to help you find a small group and other ways you can grow in faith and friendship. Consider serving on a ministry team (making sandwiches, setting up for worship, singing in the choir, cuddling babies in the nursery, etc.) where you’ll share your gifts, make a difference, and meet new friends along the way. Join us for an upcoming special event (Christmas concerts, Men’s Connection Breakfast, Parent’s Night Out, etc.) Join us on Wednesday evening for our W@W fellowship meal, and stay afterward for an Advent Bible study. Reach out to Patsy Sorrell! It brings me joy to help others find their place… to connect, to grow, and to make a difference. Not only will you be blessed, but others will be blessed because you’re part of their “family.”
Advent Study
Life Group News
Faithful: Christmas Through the Eyes of Joseph Time: Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00 p.m. Date: November 28 - December 19 Location: Multi-Purpose Room (in the Family Life Center) Leader: Andrew Vollenweider
Single Adults (50+) met in October for a "Meet & Greet" Luncheon to discuss future plans for social events, study, and serving others. Plan to join us...
From his beginnings as a humble carpenter to his important role as the earthly father of Jesus Christ, Joseph's place in the nativity story is sometimes overlooked but contains valuable lessons for all of us. Through this study, Adam Hamilton helps us to examine Christmas through the eyes of Joseph. Absent from much of the biblical narrative, Joseph never spoke a word, but his courageous actions were crucial to the birth of Christ and God's salvation plan for humanity. Through this study we will come to understand how Joseph's story is much like our own. In life, we encounter circumstances that we would never have chosen for ourselves. At times it can be tempting just to walk away. Joseph provides us a great example of humbly obeying God even when we don't understand, and faithfully moving forward in the strength that God provides. Exchange your doubt for courage this Advent and Christmas season. Learn to accept and glorify God's will even when circumstances make it difficult to do so.
Wednesdays, November 28 - December 19 Wednesdays @ Weddington: Meet for fellowship and dinner anytime between 5:00-6:30 p.m. Advent Study: 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center Not a Silent Night: Mary Looks Back to Bethlehem by Adam Hamilton. Plans are taking shape for service and social gatherings. If you are interested, contact Patsy Sorrell at the church office for updated information.
2nd Sunday Life Group Connection The 2nd Sunday of each month a member of our Life Group Ministry Team is available in the Narthex and near the coffee stations in the Family Life Center (FLC) before and after each worship service to answer questions and help you find a group that will be a good fit. The next 2nd Sunday Connection will be held on December 9. Page 5

Coping with Grief During Holidays - Tips for Handling the Holidays 1. Decide what you can handle comfortably and let family and friends know. Can I handle the responsibility of the family dinner, etc. or shall I ask someone else to do it? Do I want to talk about my loved one or not? Shall I stay home for the holidays or go to a completely different environment? 2. Make some changes if they feel comfortable for you. Open presents Christmas Eve instead of Christmas morning. Vary the timing of gift giving. Have dinner at a different time or place. Let the children take over decorating the house and the tree, baking and food preparation, etc. 3. Re-examine your priorities: greeting cards, holiday baking, decorating, putting up a tree, family dinner, etc. Do I really enjoy doing this? Is this a task that can be shared? 4. Consider doing something special for someone else. Donate a gift in the memory of your loved one. Donate money you would have spent on your loved one as a gift to charity. Adopt a needy family for the holidays. Invite a guest (foreign student, senior citizen) to share festivities. 5. Recognize your loved ones's presence in the family. Burn a special candle to quietly include your loved one. Hang a stocking for your loved one in which people can put notes with their thoughts or feelings. Listen to music especially liked by the deceased. Look at photographs. 6. If you do holiday shopping, make a list ahead of time and keep it handy for a good day, or shop through a catalog. 7. Observe the holidays in ways which are comfortable for you. There is no right or wrong way of handling holidays. Once you've decided how to observe the time, let others know. 8. Try to get enough rest -- holidays can be emotionally and physically draining. 9. Allow yourself to express your feelings. Holidays often magnify feelings of loss. It is natural to feel sadness. Share concerns, apprehensions, and feelings with a friend. The need for support is often greater during holidays. 10. Keep in mind that the experience of many bereaved persons is that they do come to enjoy holidays again. There will be other holiday seasons to celebrate. 11. Don't be afraid to have fun. Laughter and joy are not disrespectful. Give yourself and your family members permission to celebrate and take pleasure in the holidays. *Source: www.griefnet.org

Children's Ministries Youth Ministry . Charlie Brown & Rev. Meredith Hinton November Reflections November was a month full of exciting blessings for us. We travelled to Traveler’s Rest, S.C. and spent a weekend retreating together in the mountains. Our theme was “Going with the God Flow” which meant we are all called to allow Christ to lead us! Each of the students had an opportunity on Saturday night to get a piece of string and one bead and tie it around their wrist. We invited them to wear it for one week and when they notice the bead has moved off center to simply move it back to center and pray for Christ to be the center of their lives. So many of our students are continuing to wear their bracelet and pray that simple prayer. Our God can work miracles through simple responses from us. It’s awesome! We look forward to December and Advent. We look with hope towards Christ and the good news that God is with us!
