The Church Council, Board of Trustees, and Finance Committee have approved the addition of a columbarium to be located at the east end of our Weddington graveyard. Columbarium Designs from Buford, Georgia was engaged to develop a plan (depicted above). Construction has been approved by the town of Weddington and we are now in the final stages of deciding on materials and agreeing on a start date. Our hope is that the project will be complete by the end of summer. The columbarium will have 336 niches. Each niche will hold two urns. Members of Weddington can purchase niches for themselves and their family members. The purchase price for each niche will be $2,000. Funds will be used for construction. Remaining funds beyond construction costs will be held in perpetuity for the care of the columbarium and our graveyards. Anyone interested in purchasing a niche or who might like additional information please contact our Administrator, JoAnn Horstman at the church office. To view more pictures of the construction plans, please visit www.weddingtonchurch.org/ columbarium.

WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Walk with Me Jesus invites us on a journey. He invites us to walk with him. To follow him. I love walking with Jesus. All along the way He teaches. He tells us about this God who loves us. He sees a sower sowing seed and shares how that reminds Him of God sowing God’s seed and how different soils receive it differently. And the miracles! It is amazing to watch as Jesus touches people all along the way. A man who was born blind receives his sight for the first time. Wow! There was one day when there were so many people following and listening to Jesus. It was time to eat. There was a little boy there who had five barley loaves and two fish. Jesus took them, blessed them, and then fed over 5,000 people. We couldn’t believe it. Then, Jesus turned to go to Jerusalem. We were not sure we wanted to follow him there. The last time he was there, the crowds wanted to kill him. To follow him to Jerusalem was to follow him to his death. I love following Jesus and watching him perform miracles. Following Jesus to the cross is not as glamorous, not as exciting. It is difficult. And yet, to follow Jesus means to follow him in the good times and the difficult times. It means to follow him around the beautiful sea of Galilee and to follow him on the via dolorosa, the way of the cross.

February 14 is Valentine’s Day, but it is also Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a 40 day period, not counting Sundays, when we walk with Jesus to Jerusalem. We walk into town with Jesus on Palm Sunday as the people shout, “Hosanna!” We walk with Jesus to the Upper Room and share that Last Supper. We walk with Jesus into the court where the people will shout, “Crucify.” We walk with Jesus as he carries his cross. We walk with him to the hill of Golgotha. And we kneel before him as he dies for us and for our salvation. It is a journey. A powerful journey. We walk with a God who so loves the world that he came to walk with us – and to die for us. Now, he looks to us, holds out his hand, and invites, “Walk with me.” Love in Christ, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor

Foreign Missions Kenya Missions 2018 This year God’s Grace for all Nations (GGFAN) will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary. The ministry provides spiritual and physical support for the least reached tribes of the Kenyan Samburu and operates a Pastors School that prepares Kenyans, new to ministry, to effectively serve God and the growing number of believers throughout the country. In honor of this milestone WUMC will be hosting Pastor Simon and several of his team, along with US and international donors at a celebration dinner and program at the Family Life Center on Saturday, May 19. Look for more details soon. The Kenya Missions is planning a trip to Nyahururu July 28 to August 10 (dates tentative) to visit the ministries supported by our church. The team will visit with the children at Home of the Good Shepherd, put on Vacation Bible School for hundreds of local youth, feed drought stricken tribes, celebrate the 10th Anniversary of GGFAN, and experience unconditional love. Details of the trip are available from Bradd Blocker (dblocker@carolina.rr.com) and Paula Burnett (paula@wellsfargochampionship.com). Page 3

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs Waltonwood Ministries You may not know it but we have a ministry with the residents of Waltonwood Providence. Waltonwood offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care for senior adults. We are so blessed to have established a relationship with these residents through weekly Bible studies in assisted living and independent living, and the Sunday afternoon worship service at 4:00 in assisted living. Several of the independent living residents ride the bus from Waltonwood to attend our 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service at our Weddington campus. God is so at work in our ministry with these amazing seniors. Just recently, a group of teen girls from our youth group, led by Rev. Meredith Hinton, came to a Sunday afternoon assisted living worship service. The girls had made warm blankets to give to each resident who was present. I wish you could have seen the expressions on the faces of the seniors as they were given a blanket. They felt so loved by these girls and very appreciative of Weddington UMC. According to Meredith, the girls were so touched by this experience that they want to come back again at Valentine’s Day to do something special. I thank God for how lives are experiencing Him through our ministry at Waltonwood. - Rev. Ed Briggs Stephen Ministry Testimony I received the following letter from someone who had received support from a Stephen minister. "Dear Rev. Briggs, Thank you much for everything you did to help me over the last 10 months. I appreciated you meeting with me several times. I learned a lot during the DivorceCare meetings. But the best help I got was with meeting with my Stephen minister. She is so kind and understanding. Each week I looked forward to meeting with her as she helped to lift my spirit at a stressful and depressing time in my life. Thanks again." Winter Fest Health Ministry Fair The Health Ministry Team sponsored a Health Fair at our Monroe Campus on Saturday, January 13. Residents from the area around the church came to discover some of the local services offered to help them with their health like a free clinic in Monroe and lower prescription cost through a pharmacy in Marshville. We also had a nurse from Carolina Healthcare System who is a Faith Community Health Coordinator checking blood pressure. A healthy food demonstration combined with us serving a healthy breakfast made our morning with everything else a big success. A big thank you to the Health Ministry Team for all their help in orchestrating our event! Stephen Ministry Training We are looking for men and woman who have a heart and passion for wanting to make a difference in the lives of someone who is going through a difficult time. If you are this person, please prayerfully consider becoming a Stephen Minister. The training for Stephen Ministry will begin on a retreat at the church Friday, February 15 from 7:00 -9:00 p.m. and on Saturday, February 16 from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. After the retreat, Sunday evening training sessions will begin February 25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. If you are feeling called to become a Stephen Minister or want more information on what it means to be a Stephen minister, please call Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office.

Adult Ministries Women's Ministry Lucy Price Circle will host a Valentines luncheon for the House of Pearls ladies at 701 Main Restaurant in Waxhaw on Saturday, February 10, at 12:00 p.m. This will be in lieu of our regular Tuesday evening meeting. House of Pearls is a Christian transition home for women who want to get their lives on the right track. Ladies of the church are welcome to join us as we share the love of Christ with these ladies in a special way. If you would like to join us for the luncheon, would like to sponsor a meal for one of them, or would like to otherwise help, please let Carolyn Canzonieri know. We need to know how many will attend so appropriate arrangements can be made at the restaurant. The Lucy Price Circle is currently the only circle that normally meets in the evening, so join us and meet with other women, many who work away from the home and are not able to meet during the day. Our circle tries to be mission focused and has projects, activities, and events to help House of Pearls, our WUMC Monroe Campus Afterschool children, a family with special needs, and other mission oriented opportunities. Our meetings may have a speaker, an activity, and/or a meal. We enjoy eating and having social times, but also want to share the love of Christ by serving others. The Lucy Price Circle normally meets on the second Tuesday evening from September through May. For more information, contact Carolyn Canzonieri at cpc.canzonieri@gmail.com.

Susanna Wesley Circle (SWC) On Friday, February 2, we will have our annual SWC Mission Project Meeting in Helms Hall, where we do hands-on service projects during the meeting time. This has become a favorite for many of the moms who wish to participate in our monthly service outings but can't because of childcare issues. We will have free childcare on site as we always do for meetings, to complete projects while we fellowship. This year we will decorate onesies for newborns of families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, make snack bags for the Monroe Campus Homework Help Ministry, create St. Patrick Day treat bags for Matthews HELP Center's "Bounceback Backpack" program, as well as a few other projects for local organizations. Children may be dropped off for childcare at 9:15 a.m. in the Nursery Wing. Please RSVP by Monday January 29 so we can plan for the appropriate number of children. Bring a friend! We hope you can join us! If you have any questions and to respond for childcare, please contact secretaryswc@gmail.com. Mary Martha Circle will meet on Friday, February 2, at 9:30 a.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall. We will continue the Bible series entitled Broken and Blessed by Jessica LaGrone. It would be helpful to read Genesis 25, 27, and 33 about Jacob and Esau in preparation. Members are asked to bring warm socks for guests staying in Room In the Inn. Both men and women have this need. We welcome all ladies to join us for fellowship and spiritual growth. Contact Mary Revels at revelsmary@carolina.rr.com or Tommie Craig at tommiecraig@carolina.rr.com for more information.

United Methodist Men (UMM) Men’s Connection Breakfast The United Methodist Men meet

in the Youth Center of the Family Life Center from 7:30-9:00 a.m. twice a month on Sunday for food, fellowship, and to discuss various topics. All men are welcome!

February Meetings and Topics Men's Connection will meet on February 11 where we will continue our study of Andy Stanley's "What Makes you Happy?" On February 25 we will have guest speaker Daryl Oliver, Executive Director of Safer Communities Ministry, share what is going on with that ministry.

Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Rev. Mark Curtis Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult "A woman and her husband admitted to a hospital to have a baby requests that their nurse be reassigned - they are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is black, to touch their baby. The hospital complies, but the baby later goes into cardiac distress when Ruth is on duty. She hesitates before rushing in to perform CPR. When her indecision ends in tragedy, Ruth finds herself on trial, represented by a white public defender who warns against bringing race into a courtroom. As the two come to develop a truer understanding of each other's lives, they begin to doubt the beliefs they each hold most dear"— I often read fiction novels for pleasure, and this certainly fit the bill. But every so often I come across a novel that is not only well written but thought provoking. The title, Small Great Things, is derived from a quote from a speech of Martin Luther King, Jr. This is the first novel I have read by Picoult and I could not put it down. The narrative led me to serious thought and reflection about the very serious issues of race and culture that our society finds itself so deeply immersed in these days. While not overtly Christian, there is much in this book for our community of faith to wrestle with in our discourse and dialog about our relationship to God and our common humanity. If you enjoy a well written novel, and are looking for something to challenge your understanding of the world around us, I highly recommend Small Great Things. -Rev. Mark Curtis You can check out a copy of this Great Book! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 in the Sanctuary Building or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center. The Resource Center is currently open only on Sunday mornings from 9:15 until 12:15 and is volunteer staffed. If you are interested in helping in this ministry, please contact resourcecenter@weddingtonchurch.org.

Adult Ministries Upcoming Bible Study Firethorne Bible Study Thinc Diphruntly - Why So Hard to Think Differently? by James MacDonald. Starting Monday, February 5, 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Louise Padfield’s home. Why do we lose our temper? Why do we tend to hurt those we care most for? How do families find themselves broken? The reason is often the way we think. Thinking determines outcome more than anything else. Your actions, attitudes, and self-awareness all flow from the way you think. This 10-week Bible study will help you face the reality that nothing is going to change until you think differently. God offers our only hope for victory over disposition, dysfunction, double-mindedness, and every other mental stronghold. With Him, we can think differently. Member workbooks will be available at our first meeting for $14.00 each. Contact Louise Padfield at lpadfield8@gmail.com or 704-618-0554 to register.

Safer Communities Ministry

Fixing It For Christ

Our Lord Jesus calls all of us to go make disciples. A great opportunity exists at Union County Jail. Weekly Bible Studies are organized by Safer Communities Ministry: Eagles Fellowship. You can join this group as a volunteer minister. Men and women are needed. There is a critical need for Spanish speakers.

Love the idea of participating in mission work, but not so crazy about the idea of traveling far from home to do so? Look no further! Fixing It For Christ is an annual local four-day long Christian community service project that is based in the greater Waxhaw area. Volunteers work to make much needed improvements on homes in the community, such as trimming shrubs at the home of an elderly shut-in, roof replacement and repair, painting, and electrical and plumbing repair.

The next orientation for Eagles Fellowship will be at the Union County Jail on Thursday, March 15 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Magistrate's Conference Room. No prior preparation is required, only a willingness to go through orientation and a background check. Assignments to volunteer minister role will happen after the orientation and background check is completed. Registration can take place by calling 704-2833573 or emailing safercommunitiesministry@gmail.com. For questions contact Chaplain Rev. Vic Weaver at vic.l.weaver@gmail.com or Bill Mayes at mayesbd@gmail.com.

Page 10

If this is of interest to you or anyone you know, please contact Tammy McGee at tmillsmcgee@gmail.com for further information. The first meeting date will be Tuesday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hemby House, Room 1.

The sale ranges from newborns to teens and you will find name-brand clothes, furniture, books, toys, bikes, equipment and more. We need over 350 volunteer shifts filled to be able to welcome thousands of shoppers and have a successful sale. Please consider joining the fun as a helper and shopper. We can definitely find a spot for your strengths! We need strong muscles for heavy lifting and warm friendly faces for greeting and talking to our shoppers, all while serving our mission of being the hands and feet of Jesus. The exciting news is that if you volunteer, you will get to shop EARLY before the doors open to the public! For more information please visit our website www.weddingtonkidsconsignmentsale.com, watch our Facebook page, or reach out to us at weddingtonkidsconsignment@hotmail.com. The bi-annual Kids Consignment Sale raises money that supports the church and local missions. Union County charities such as Operation Reach-Out, Turning Point, House of Pearls, Camp Lurecrest, Matthews Help Center, UC Crisis Assistance, UC Community Shelter, The Closet of Southbrook Church, Dressed for Success, and Help Crisis Pregnancy Center are examples of organizations that benefit from the success of the Weddington Kids Consignment Sale through monetary gifts and unsold item donations from generous consignors. Within the church, money is allocated to the general budget, scholarships for youth mission trips, a youth college scholarship, children’s ministries, Weddington Christian Preschool, Weddington Christian Academy, and to United Methodist Women outreach programs to name a few.
