Confirmation 2019 Confirmation is a time of intentional preparation that gives youth the opportunity to reflect on the most basic elements of our faith. It is a special time to begin a journey of faith that nurtures and challenges youth to think about the nature of God, the life of Christ, and learn about United Methodist beliefs. The classes are offered annually starting in February to youth, 6th grade and above. On February 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center Multipurpose Room prospective confirmation students and their parents are invited to an Introduction to Confirmation class where we will explain the process of confirmation and have a special time to get to know our pastors and church staff. Those who plan to attend confirmation are encouraged to mark their calendars! We have made every effort to be respectful of busy schedules and we would very much appreciate those participating to make that participation, and attendance, a priority. Please note: Students who have participated in the classes will be offered the opportunity to join the church through a special service on Palm Sunday. Students who cannot attend the Palm Sunday service will be able to make their Confirmation at any Sunday morning service they choose. We will make these arrangements at our first meeting. For a full list of class dates, times, and topics, and to register, please visit the website at www.weddingtonchurch.org/confirmation.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Created to Be in Relationship February is sometimes known as the month of love. Valentine’s Day often reminds us of the special people and relationships in our lives. We are meant to be in relationship.
Despite this, he chose twelve apostles to be a group with whom he would share his life and ministry. And there were three, Peter, James, and John, with whom Jesus shared his deepest experiences.
According to the Genesis story, when God created Adam, the human being, something was missing. “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone’” (Genesis 2:18 NRSV). God then created the animals of the field, the birds of the air, and other living creatures and brought them to Adam. But there was still something missing. So, God created another human being, Eve. And Adam replied, “At last.”
Relationship is not being in the proximity of others, it is sharing our lives with them. Who are the special people in your life? Give thanks to God for them, tell them you are grateful to God for them, and spend time together. Who do you know that is alone or lonely? Be that special person in their lives. Investing in the life of another is a great investment.
We need other people in our lives. We were created to be in relationship and to be in community. We need family. We need friends. We were not meant to be alone.
Finally, we are meant to be in relationship with God. “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in you” (Augustine, Confessions). It is a relationship that must be intentional.
But relationships take work. They do not just happen. One of the things I share with all couples when we do the premarital work before the wedding is to keep dating. You must be intentional. Otherwise, life will get busy, the relationship will be pushed to the side, and soon, there is a feeling of distance or brokenness. Dating does not have to be expensive. A date can be at home. But it is vital! Relationships must be nurtured. We date to start the relationship and we must date to maintain it.
Relationships do not just happen. They take effort. Our relationship with God and our relationships with others are vital to who we are and who we were created to be. Perhaps this is why Jesus said that loving God and loving each other were the most important commandments. Take time to invest in the relationships that matter: your relationship with God and relationships with those whom God has placed in your lives.
We are also called to be in relationship with other Christians. We need each other. We cannot be the people God called us to be alone. Jesus had multitudes following him.

Missions Local Missions . Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez. Local Missions Hygiene Item Donation Drive February 10 & 17 Blessings, church family. Winter has hit hard with freezing weather, especially for communities living in the Midwest and North of our nation. Let us join in prayer for them. Furthermore, cold weather is being pushed down towards us, making nights dangerous, especially for the homeless in our community. In partnership with Urban Ministries and Room In The Inn, we welcome homeless neighbors with a warm meal and bed. In addition, Operation Sandwich has been preparing 1,000 sandwiches monthly and delivering them to Urban Ministries in Uptown Charlotte. We thank all of our servant volunteers who make these ministries happen. With the extra freeze that has arrived, we are having a Hygiene Item Drive on two Sundays, February 10 and 17, to help our homeless neighbors. Please refer to the list below for items requested. Donations can be dropped in the bins against the window wall in the Family Life Center gym, as well as in bins in Helms Hall and at the Bonds Grove campus. –Rev. Rocio • Hand & Feet Warmers • Shampoo & Conditioner • Bar Soap & Body Wash • Disposable Razors & Shaving Cream
• Hairbrushes & Combs • Deodorant • Toothbrushes: Singles, Family Packs • Toothpaste

These phones/tablets will be given to pastors to help with their ministries. *If you don’t know how to “wipe” your phone or tablet, we will work with a trusted IT person to make sure it is completed before taken to Kenya. 2. Reading Glasses - Reading glasses in strengths from +1.00 to +3.50. We will be testing the eyes of the GGFAN Staff, Pastors and their church members, as well as villagers. Building Brothers 2019 Mission With this annual trip planned for April 4-7, 2019, the goals of Building Brothers remain unchanged. We will be constructing Habitat for Humanity homes on the Carolina coast. Building Brothers can be described as a place and time where we labor to help others, but in reality, it is a place and time where God intervenes in the hearts of the men who go. The sense of God’s presence and His pleasure in the ordinary events are an integral part of why we go. A man’s skills may help in the building tasks, but those skills are secondary to the attitudes of his heart in building relationships. The team size is limited to 24 men and the cost is $325. The first 24 men that are paid will go – first come, first served. For more information, contact either Brian King at Bking@rodgersbuilders.com or (704) 582-1940 or Lloyd Briggs at Labinc1@aol.com or (704) 806-6752. Page 3

Answering the Call - Stephen Ministry Have you ever felt the “tug?" The one you know can only come from God? I have, and how many times in my life have I ignored it or put it off? How many times have I dismissed it and said, “that can’t be God talking to me?” Then, I look at the disciples and Paul and the many other examples in the Bible, where men and women answered God’s call without hesitation. They felt the tug and left everything behind. Paul reminds us that "each one has his own gift from God” (1 Corinthians 7:7) to be used here on earth to glorify Him. So the tiny tug I felt back in 1999 was God preparing me to step out, in His time, to be a Stephen Minister. Fast forward to 2015, and God’s tug was now a push. There was no question in my mind, God was ready for me to step up and step out in faith. His assurance, and my many answered prayers, provided the confidence and encouragement I needed. We are all called to be the hands and feet of Christ. So, compelled to do just that, I accepted the call and- wow- what a call; what a blessing; what a joy and tremendous journey God put in front of me, a journey with Jesus between my care receiver (let’s call him “Rocky”) and myself. Was I equipped? I can’t say that I was, but Rocky and I walked through the hills and valleys of our journey together with God by our side. I use the word journey to describe our time together because during that time we were both care receiver and caregiver, and there was very little distinction between them. What Rocky needed, God gave through me and what I needed, God gave through Rocky. What a blessing it was! We experienced new heights in our faith and spiritual growth. We experienced His grace and mercy and most of all, His love. That love we held tight to during our time together. We are all called to be the hands and feet of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 12:27 Paul writes, “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.” From my personal experience being His hands and feet have brought indescribable joy, peace, love, and happiness to me. Do you feel that “tug” or “push?” It just might be time for you to reach out and be the hands and feet for Christ. As we begin a new year, I want to encourage you to pray about 2019 and where God is calling you. Stephen Ministry may be your calling. It was for me, and I am forever blessed and grateful that God gave me that “tug.” - Barry Partee, Stephen Minister Page 7
