WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Images Over the past several weeks we have seen a variety of images exposing the human condition. We have seen images of hate and violence among people who did not even know each other. We have seen images and heard rhetoric of division and brokenness. We have seen images that have broken the heart of God.

The flood waters will recede. Homes will be repaired. Life will slowly return to normal. My prayer is that we can create a new normal. A new normal where the images of hate and violence are replaced with continued images of neighbor helping neighbor and stranger helping stranger. A new normal where the first thing we notice in someone else is the image of God.

This past week, we witnessed images of a powerful hurricane as it made landfall in Texas. There were images of powerful winds and torrential rains. The flooding in Texas and Louisiana has been devastating. People were stranded. Lives were lost.

“Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." Luke 10:36-37 (NRSV)

But there were other images. There were images of neighbor helping neighbor. Images of strangers helping strangers. Images of people taking off from work and leaving the safety of their own homes, to take their boats to flooded communities to help people they did not even know. We saw images of people helping others without regard to race, social status, culture, or political affiliation. We saw human beings seeing other human beings as human beings in need and doing something about it. We witnessed people being carried by others whom they had never met. It did not matter. We witnessed furniture stores opening their doors to become an emergency shelter. Someone needed help and that is all the Good Samaritans needed to know.

Through God’s grace, during our Great Week of Service, many in our church family shared their time, talents, and the calling in their hearts to be the hands and feet of Jesus. This year we offered a few more service opportunities than in the past and we still had an abundance of volunteers to fill each need. Our week began with over 50 people coming together to package boxes with much needed items for our troops in Afghanistan and with hygiene products for Operation Reach Out to distribute to children in need. Hands were hard at work making hundreds of sandwiches which were then driven to Urban Ministry by additional volunteers, who also helped prepare a nice meal and greeted each guest with a hello! The children at our Monroe Campus and volunteers, alike, spent three evenings together in fellowship playing games, roasting hotdogs, enjoying a ride on an inflatable water slide, and sharing in the true meaning of Christian brotherhood. Children even had their feet washed by some of our volunteers as Sole 4 Souls handed out a new pair of sneakers to each child. Our church mini bus was filled with volunteers to help give a hand at Samaritan’s Feet Warehouse, which isn’t an easy feat on a hot day! In the middle of the week, food was dropped off at our Bonds Grove Campus where people came together to organize, package, and deliver items to Loaves and Fishes of Union County. Our volunteers were not afraid to get their hands dirty and show a little muscle as they tilled dirt and planted vegetables in a community garden to help feed the hungry. An overwhelming number of children’s blankets and stuffed animals were donated. Volunteers added ribbon around the blankets and delivered everything to Turning Point, as well as took a tour of this facility which assists women and children of domestic abuse. We had a nice turnout at Operation Reach Out, where volunteers made delicious, home-cooked meals and shared in fellowship with 25 of the hungry from the surrounding area. Collected canned and dried food was organized and boxed in our Monroe Campus Fellowship Hall as families came together to help restock the pantry at Union County Crisis Assistance. Our last service project took place in the surrounding neighborhood of our Monroe Campus. Volunteers were grouped together, both English speaking and Spanish speaking, and sent out to walk the streets picking up trash and knocking on doors to see if any neighbors needed help cleaning up their yards. This was also an opportunity to introduce residents to our church. There were water stations set up to keep not only our volunteers hydrated, but anyone who drove or walked by and needed a cold drink on a very warm day. We pray that everyone who participated in our Great Week of Service was inspired to continue their support in assisting in similar and new opportunities which will take place throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez.

Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs News and Announcements DivorceCare begins on Tuesday, September 12 in the Youth Center There is such shame and guilt when separation or divorce happens in a couples’ life. The feeling of loss is very apparent as well. Caring DivorceCare facilitators seek to walk with the participants in such a way that brings comfort and healing with whatever feelings a person might be having. There are thirteen session that provide a video on topics pertinent to separation or divorce. After viewing the video, there is a time for discussion. If you or someone you know would like support during a separation or divorce, please sign up for DivorceCare by contacting Sandra McKee at the church office. GriefShare begins on Wednesday, September 6 in the Hemby House It is never easy when a loved one dies. The pain and heartache can be intense. GriefShare offers support during whatever stage a grieving person finds him or herself. GriefShare facilitators have experienced their own losses. Their compassion combined with a thirteen week video series on topics related to grief have proven to be very comforting. If you or someone you know would like to experience the care of GriefShare, please contact Sandra McKee at the church office. “Not My Child" Event on Sunday, October 1 Have you ever said these words about your child or grandchild regarding the use of drugs? Maybe you have heard someone else say this phrase. It is very easy for us to miss the signs of drug usage or addiction. The problem of opiates usage and addiction has become epidemic. You might be wondering, “How can we make a difference in the fight against this blight in our society?” Awareness is the first step in the battle on drugs and drug addiction. We are going to host a “Not My Child Event” on Sunday, October 1 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room in the Family Life Center. This gathering will have various presenters to share about drug addiction. We will have a professional therapist, a representative from the Dilworth Center for Chemical Dependency, the parent of a child who has struggled with addiction, and someone who has had victory over his addiction. There will be time for discussion and questions. If you would like more information about this event or if you are interested in attending, please contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office. Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Emily Campbell The Tale of Three Trees by Amanda Elwell-Hunt and The Blessings of a Skinned Knee by Dr. Wendy Mogel The Tale of Three Trees is an American folktale retold by Amanda Elwell-Hunt. This beautiful story tells of the lives of three sentient trees growing on a hillside. Just like all of us, the trees dream of their bright futures and, just like many of us, the world intervenes, destroying hopes. Finally, each tree is called upon to play an important role in the life of Jesus Christ. They sense that they have been touched by God. Each knows that even their sapling dreams pale in comparison to the brilliance, honor, and joy of serving Him. Children will relate to the tender emotions evoked by this tale and I challenge any adult to reach the end with dry eyes. Dr. Wendy Mogel’s best selling book, The Blessings of a Skinned Knee, is a must read for anyone who loves a child. In chapter 2, The Blessing of Acceptance, Dr. Mogel shares, "A key concept in Hasidic thought expresses the idea of balance: ‘Keep two pieces of paper in your pockets at all times. On one write, ‘I am a speck of dust.’ On the other, ‘The world was created for me.’ The divine and the ordinary merge in Judaism, …". Dr. Mogel’s common-sense style, combined with the wisdom of ancient Judaism, provides an invaluable guide in raising emotionally healthy children. The very parenting principles that Mary and Joseph applied to raise the Son of God, Jesus the Christ, are woven into modern day parenting scenarios. I wish I had read this book BEFORE my own children were grown! You can check out a copy of these Great Books! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 in the Sanctuary Building or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center. The Resource Center is currently open only on Sunday mornings from 9:15 until 12:15 and is volunteer staffed. If you are interested in helping in this ministry, please contact resourcecenter@weddingtonchurch.org.

August Reflections August has been an incredible

month for us. The first weekend we had our rising 6th grade mission trip, SERVE. We served the Monroe campus by cleaning, organizing, building book shelves, and playing with the neighborhood children. Two of our older youth spoke to the rising 6th graders and encouraged them to seek God, seek Christian community in our youth group, and continue being the hands and feet of Christ. We had a blast serving God and growing in our relationships!

We are looking forward to the fall and getting back into a routine. We are praying for everyone as they start the new school year. We are excited for all this year holds for each of our youth. We would like to encourage everyone to come to our regular Sunday night gatherings and Wednesday night Bible Study. If you or someone you know is looking for a Life Group please contact me (Rev. Meredith Hinton) as soon as you're able. We would love to get you connected to a small group. It's important to stay connected to God and to one another during the busy school season. If you're interested in being a Life Group leader, please reach out to me as well!

Charlie and I are thanking God for an overwhelmingly wonderful summer. On August 20 after Sunday Funday we closed out the summer with our "Summer Soak." We played games, laughed, and got covered in foam! It was hilarious! Page 9

Hurricane Harvey Disaster Response As the church, we are reaching out to our brothers and sisters in the devastated areas of Texas and Louisiana in the name of and on behalf of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) works to assist communities in basic needs and recovery during a crisis. Because administrative cost are covered through the denomination, 100% of all funds sent through UMCOR for a relief effort go to the effort. If you desire to make a monetary donation, this can be done in several ways. You can make out a check to Weddington United Methodist Church and note in the memo line “UMCOR - Harvey.” These can be dropped in the offering plates during worship, mailed to the church, or brought by the church office during office hours. Funds can also be sent to UMCOR through our church Giving page on the website by entering the desired amount in the “Disaster Relief” box. We will also be collecting items to create Hygiene and Cleaning Kits on Sunday, September 3 and Sunday, September 10 during worship hours in Helms Hall and the Family Life Center on the Weddington campus, as well as at our Bonds Grove and Monroe campuses. Items can also be dropped off in the church office through September 11 during office hours. To view a full list of requested donation items, please visit www.umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies. On Monday, September 11 we will have a packing event to assemble the Cleaning and Hygiene Kits from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center. As a church, we encourage your response in these tangible ways, but also through prayer. Page 10

Together, we will engage in large and smallgroup conversations and have space for solitude, reflection and sabbath. We will make use of stories, forms of creative expression, and the beauty of St. Francis Springs Prayer Center to deepen our understanding of the relationships between who we are, whose we are, and what we do. More information about the Circle of Trust® Approach can be found in Parker Palmer’s book, A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life, or online at www.couragerenewal.org. Kathryn McElveen is a Courage & Renewal facilitator, professional leadership coach, and ordained minister in the United Methodist Church.
