Wednesday evenings are a busy time of fellowship and ministry at Weddington Church - and there’s something for everyone! Plan to join us as we kick off the new ministry season and resume Wednesday night dinners. On September 5, we’ll have an OPEN HOUSE that will include Weddington ministry leaders and displays to help members and guests learn more about the vibrant ministries at Weddington Church. There will also be a special Wednesday evening MEET WEDDINGTON at 5:30 p.m. for those interested in learning more about membership. We encourage everyone to attend and please invite a friend to join you. It will be a wonderful opportunity to introduce your friends to Weddington, meet new people, fellowship with staff and ministry leaders, and help one another get excited about being a part of our vibrant church family!

WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections Jesus: Modeling the Way of Discipleship Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28: 18-20 (NIV)

As Jesus carried out his ministry here on earth, he was essentially modeling the way of discipleship for us. Showing us how to love God, how to love one, another and how to live faithfully so that we could all experience the fullness of God’s grace and goodness for our lives. Throughout the Gospels we see Jesus moving from town to town, meeting with large groups of people as he taught and preached the Good News of God’s amazing love and grace. Then, there were times when Jesus went off by himself to spend time alone with God in prayer and discernment. We also see that Jesus was intentional in surrounding Himself with a group of people that he spent time with on a regular basis - the disciples, his friends. A small group of people that he not only invested in, but who undoubtedly grew close to one another, and supported one another through the ups and downs of all that they experienced together. And they experienced a lot together! I believe this was Jesus’ way of showing us how important relationships would be to us in matters of life and faith.

be disciples. And in His final days on earth, through what we know as The Great Commission, Jesus tells the disciples (and us) to make disciples - revealing to us that discipleship ranks as a top priority. It really matters! This is why being and making disciples is a top priority for us at Weddington Church. And for that reason, it’s important for us all to encourage one another to intentionally grow in faith and follow the examples Jesus has given us as we live our day-to-day lives. As the summer months come to an end and we enter into a new ministry season, now is a good time to connect, or reconnect, with others and be intentional in our faith life. It’s also an opportunity to invite someone to join you on the journey. After all, that is how most journeys begin - with an invitation from one person to another. And, sometimes we underestimate the power of an invitation. Thinking back on my journey of faith, I realize that just about every opportunity for growth began with an invitation - to attend a new church, to a Bible study, to become a Stephen Minister, to begin a new ministry, to join a small group, to pray for God’s will, not my own.

We live in challenging times and life is full of ups and downs. Jesus knew firsthand what that is like, what we would face, and what we would need to live an abundant life.

As we each consider how we will be intentional about growing in faith this new season, I hope you will also consider who you might invite to join you - a friend, a co-worker, the child next door, the new face you noticed in worship recently. There are many opportunities to extend an invitation. It’s okay if their calendar is too full or they aren’t quite ready but who knows, maybe it’s just the right time, and you will both be blessed by it.

Through His life, Jesus taught the disciples (and us) how to

Fall 2018 Bible Studies Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer Mondays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. beginning September 10 at the Padfield residence in Marvin with leader Louise Padfield. Discover how humble obedience is the root to clear and daily communications with God. Learn how surrender unlocks His many blessings intended for us, centers us in His will, and helps us discern His voice in everyday life. Please purchase your own workbook in advance of the first session. God of Creation: A Study of Genesis 1-11 by Jen Wilkin Wednesdays from 9:30-Noon beginning September 12 in the Fellowship Hall with leader Marty Cook. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Where did everything come from? In its first 11 chapters, the book of Genesis addresses our deepest questions, declaring to us a transcendent God and shaping our understanding of the Bible as a whole. Join us as we walk through Genesis 1-11, searching these familiar passages for their larger meaning in the story of Scripture and in the life of every believer. We are going to cultivate a worshipful understanding of our holy, Creator God; explore Genesis as the place where the story of redemption begins; trace the themes of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. Childcare is available. Revelation Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 p.m. beginning September 12 in the Fellowship Hall with leader Rev. Dr. Terry Moore. Join Dr. Terry Moore for a 9-week walk through the powerful book of Revelation. This amazing book of the Bible is often misread, misunderstood, and misused. When read carefully, however, this vision of John offers a message of hope and a glimpse of God’s ultimate victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Foundations of the Faith Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 p.m. beginning October 3 in the Multipurpose Room with leader Rev. Amy Hutchison. Simply put: Adult Confirmation. Through this video-led Bible study, God is inviting you to experience Him in an intimate love relationship through which he reveals to you His will, His ways, and His work. Through the biblical principles in this course, God can teach you how to know when God is speaking to you, recognize His activity around you, and adjust your life to Him and His ways.

If we are honest with ourselves, we NO SHAME might be able to see things in our lives that have a strong hold. Sadly, the power of shame can keep us from getting the help we need for whatever it is that is our constant struggle. We are having an Addiction Awareness Seminar titled “Shattering the Shame of Silence. This seminar will be on Sunday, September 23 during the Sunday School hours at 9:30 and 11:00 in Helms Hall and then after the 10:10 service in the Family Life Center. Great Week of Service 2018 Great Week of Service 2018 was a blessing. Through the leadership of Operation Sandwich, we were able to make 900 sandwiches for Urban Ministry and 400 bagged lunches for the Salvation Army's Center of Hope! The Boy and Cub Scouts also contributed to that effort by donating much of the food. We hosted fun events for the children of our Monroe Campus three nights of the week. One of those evening included our Sole2Soul event during which we blessed and washed children's feet and gave them new shoes for the school year. So many of you prayed, gave, and worked. Through that, we were able to fill vehicles of dry and canned foods for Crisis Assistance of Union County. We packed many bags of hygiene kits in partnership with Operation Reach Out. We served at Samaritan's Feet. We baked, decorated, and delivered cookies for our shut-ins. Finally, we were able to able to send nine care boxes to our wonderful U.S. Troops filled with treats and blessed love. I look forward to Great Week of Service 2019. I have faith that through the Holy Spirit, we will serve God and our neighbor even more! In addition, I encourage each of us to stay in tune with our church eNews, website, and newsletters so that we may be informed of the service opportunities throughout the year. -Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez
