CUMBA
| CUMBA Programmes 2009
Business is all about leadership, innovation and achievements. We demonstrate the essence of these through continuous advancement of the MBA Programmes.
CUMBA Programmes 2009
Welcome to CUMBA The Faculty of Business Administration at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is a pioneer in local graduate business education. Over the years, we have nurtured more than 12,000 undergraduates and over 4,000 MBA graduates, forming the most extensive alumni network in town. Many of them are now top executives or entrepreneurs in large corporations around the world. With a heritage spanning more than 40 years, our MBA Programmes have been undergoing a course of evolution, which denotes our best endeavors to keep the programme in pace with the ever-changing business world. Among which, China element has always been at the heart of our education. This translates into a dedicated concentration option in China Business. Along with a China-focused curriculum, our students have started field trips to the mainland since 1999, where they can directly feel the pulse of the China market through visits and exchanges with mainland business leaders. With the emerging role of China in the global arena, solid knowledge of China’s latest development is more important than ever. We developed close partnership in research and academic programmes in Finance and Accounting with renowned mainland institutions, such as Tsinghua University and the Shanghai National Accounting Institute. This together with a network of more than 1,000 mainland alumni, offers our MBA students a unique learning and exchange platform in the mainland. Basing on the solid foundation of our main stream MBA studies in Finance, Marketing and Management, the Faculty further developed niche programmes which help equip students with relevant professional knowledge. One example is our JD-MBA Programme launched in 2007. Our latest initiative is the launching of the Entrepreneurship Concentration in the new school year of 2008-09. It is our vision to nurture a group of innovative entrepreneurs to capture the dynamic growth opportunities in China and our region. Business is all about leadership, innovation and achievements. We demonstrate the essence of these through continuous advancement of the MBA Programmes. Looking forward, we will continue to deliver world-class business education and grasp every opportunity to connect our students to the world. I sincerely invite you to join us and enjoy this extraordinary and rewarding venture.

Business Projects Business Projects provide an excellent opportunity for students to broaden their perspectives; enhance presentation as well as communications skills and most importantly put what they have learned into practice.
L’Oreal e-Strat Challenge Episode 7 In 2007, a team formed by three CUMBA students won the championship of L’Oréal e-Strat Challenge Episode 7 in Hong Kong. This challenge is the world’s biggest online business simulation for undergraduates and MBA students. In its first six editions, the L’Oréal e-Strat Challenge has brought together over 132,000 students from 2,190 schools representing 125 countries.
Vice-Chancellor’s Cup of Student Entrepreneurship In CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor’s Cup of Student Entrepreneurship, teams submit their plans for business start-ups to venture capitalists and investors. The judges select teams that present the most attractive investment opportunities to represent CUHK at Asia Moot Corp in Bangkok and the National Venture Challenge in China. Winning teams in past years have started their own ventures, using the incubation facilities at CUHK and neighbouring Science Park.
Booz & Company Social Venture Challenge (formerly known as Booz Allen Hamilton Social Venture Challenge) Start-ups can fulfill missions other than maximizing shareholder wealth. An innovative collaboration of business, education and community organizations are using entrepreneurial action to achieve social goals. The Booz & Company Social Venture Challenge asks students to craft feasible business plans to enable disenfranchised segments of the population to attain economic independence, to solve environmental problems, to reduce social conflicts and increase harmony and to raise the cultural level of society or to fulfill any other socially desirable objective.
CUMBA Programmes 2009
Business Practicum Projects Business Practicum Projects provide an opportunity for full-time MBA students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to solve real-world business problems. Students with different nationalities and background are encouraged to form teams to undertake business consulting projects under the supervision of a full-time faculty member. The project must be sponsored by a company in Hong Kong and approved by the Director. The sponsorship includes the joint supervision of the project by an appointed senior staff member of the company, a pledge of assistance and support to ensure the successful completion of the project. In 2008, our students were invited to work on strategic projects offered by several major corporate and investment banks, as well as some other marketing organizations. Projects covered issues such as market entry strategies and brand positioning research. Students would benefit from learning how to solve strategic problems and often lead to career opportunities.
Overseas Business Plan Competitions Joining Business Plan Competitions is an excellent way to polish your business skills and to hone your entrepreneurship spirit. The Chinese University of Hong Kong strongly encourages MBA students to form cross disciplinary teams, with different nationalities and different background to participate in various competitions. In 2008, we have sent teams to join competitions in San Francisco, Oregon, Moot Corp in Texas, USA and Asian Moot Corp in Thailand.

Today, we are the leader in China business research and we have nearly 1000 MBA alumni working and living in China. Business leaders from various local and multinational organizations with a presence in China regularly visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong to share their insights on this huge market with our students. Partnership with Tsinghua University
The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the first university in Hong Kong to offer joint MBA programmes with a Mainland institution. We started our MBA in Finance with Tsinghua University in Beijing back in 2000. Since then, this flagship programme has nurtured over 600 business executives in the Mainland with many of whom hold key positions in the financial service industry in China.
Partnership with Shanghai National Accounting Institute In 2004, the Faculty of Business Administration of CUHK forged a strategic partnership with the Shanghai National Accounting Institute to provide world class accounting and finance education in the greater China region and provide opportunities for local and Mainland accounting and finance professionals to learn and grow. Upon completion of the programme, participants are awarded both a Master of Accountancy degree by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a CFO Professional Certificate by the Shanghai National Accounting Institute. As the only programme outside of Mainland China offering the CFO professional certificate, our graduates enjoy a competitive advantage no other local institute can deliver.

CUMBA Programmes 2009
Methods of Instruction Individual faculty members have primary responsibility for choosing the most effective course materials and method of teaching in realizing course objectives. Common methods include lectures, discussions, case analyses, seminars, gaming models, and directed research. In addition, students conduct plant tours, surveys, and field work, and local businessmen are invited to give guest lectures or lead class discussions. The case analysis method is used extensively where appropriate. Students analyse, evaluate, and formulate decisions for business situations on the basis of the knowledge that they have acquired or are learning. Usually, students are required to make oral presentations on the case and/or prepare written analyses, and case materials are often used as the basis for course examinations. Regardless of which course materials or delivery methods faculty members adopt, they aim to achieve a balance between theory and practice, with a clear emphasis on relevance.

Non-means Tested Loan Scheme (NLS) for local students http://www.sfaa.gov.hk/eng/schemes/nlss.htm The NLS operates on a full cost-recovery basis. Interest is charged at the HKSAR Government’s no-gain-no-loss rate which is currently set at 2.451% below the average best lending rate of the note-issuing banks, plus a risk-adjusted factor which seeks to cover the Government’s risk in disbursing unsecured loan once the loan is drawn down and throughout the repayment period until the NLS loan is fully repaid. In addition, the CUMBA Alumni Association provides funds for supplementary loans to students with demonstrated financial need. The loan amount depends on individual financial circumstances, but does not normally exceed HKD10,000. The Nam Hou Traders’ Association has donated HKD50,000 to establish a loan fund to support students who participate in exchange programmes.
