As the Oak Park and River Forest area continues its recovery from the Covid years, there is a renewed enthusiasm and sense of growth in our communities. With this year’s Answer Book, we hope to give you a snapshot of what is happening in your backyard.
Our communities continue to be a place where the arts thrive. This summer’s Sculpture Walk in downtown Oak Park gives everyone an excuse to get out and explore. Public Art on new developments in the village brightens up the walls and adds appeal to the walkways in front of new residences.
Our housing market statistics show that Oak Park, River Forest and the surrounding suburbs continue to be sought-after destinations for home buyers. Historic preservation remains a draw for visitors as well as a hot topic among preservationists and developers.
Local libraries continue to be a beacon
of light for residents of all ages. The Oak Park Public Library welcomed a new Executive Director in Joslyn Bowling Dixon, while River Forest added a new Adult & Teen Services Librarian in Brian Wolowitz.
The villages’ elementary schools are looking a bit different this year as well. District 97 welcomed a new superintendent in Dr. Ushma Shah, and River Forest’s District 90 is making the move to all-day kindergarten this fall.
We take a look at the growing interest in zero-waste events and delve into gardening practices that replace lawns with native plants and wildflowers.
Our village governments held elections this spring, and Growing Community Media’s election coverage brought the public up-to-date information on the candidates and local races. River Forest named Matt Walsh its Village Administrator this spring.
The Park District of Oak Park opened the doors of the Community Recreation Center this May. With workout spaces, an indoor walking track, sports courts, afterschool activities and childcare options, the new CRC makes good on its promise to be “A Place to Belong.”
On the not-for-profit front, the Animal Care League is in the midst of a makeover that is sure to get tails wagging. We couldn’t resist featuring a few of the animals who have found their forever homes in Oak Park and River Forest this year
A big thanks goes out to the OPRFChamber of Commerce for partnering with us on the Answer Book, and an even bigger thanks goes out to our readers who read and support our local news coverage.
Please keep supporting the local shops, restaurants, services, and newspaper that make Oak Park and River Forest the vibrant villages that we call home.

ARTS
Public Art as Planned Development
By Lacey Sikora Contributor Editor
Since at least 2009, as part of its Planned Development Process, Village of Oak Park has required that new planned developments include an element of public art. Whether the medium is sculpture, mosaic, mural, kinetic art, photography, audio/visual or textiles, the art is encouraged to celebrate the spirit and history of the Village. Pictured are recent works of public art on newly-constructed, multi-family buildings at The 801, 1133 South Boulevard, Albion, Maple Place, District House and America House.

Q&A
District 90 Kindergarten teachers
Q: How long have you been teaching kindergarten?
A: Together, these teachers have about 97 years of experience teaching students in kindergarten through second grade, with 47 total years as kindergarten teachers. When discussing their longevity as kindergarten teachers, each expressed admiration for the delight the youngest learners often bring to the classroom. “I love watching kindergarten students become independent learners; it’s simply magical,” said Tammy Brenneman.
Q: What have been some of your favorite aspects as a kindergarten/first-grade teacher?
A: All of the teachers excitedly shared their love of seeing students change as the school year progressed. Kindergarten is a dynamic year of learning and growth: academically, socially, and emotionally Each agreed that students make such significant progress from the beginning of the school year to the end.
“Kindergartners go from not knowing letters to reading books, from not knowing numbers to adding and subtracting,” explained Barb Garvey “The amount of growth
these students make in a single school year is simply amazing.”
The five teachers share a common goal regarding their students.
“We strive to instill a love of learning in each student. It’s such a joy to see their delight as they learn new things,” shared Kathryn Stasys.
Q: District 90 is moving to full-day kindergarten in the fall. What will this transition look like forstudents?
A: While still in the planning stages, the teachers have already begun working on the transition from half-day to full-day kindergarten. The teachers expect that the beginning of the upcoming school year will focus on helping students acclimate to a full-day program, build their stamina for learning, and adhere to classroom and school routines.
“There will be more time for everything that happens in school –more time for cooperative learning and developing friendships and lunch and recess. Students will be able to navigate a full school day,” said Amy Driscoll.
“There will be more time to devote to both academic and socialemotional learning development.” added Lori Suzuki.
Q: What aspects of full-day kindergarten are you most excited about as teachers?
A: The teachers are most excited about having additional time to meet the needs of the whole child –academic, social, and emotional through developmentally appropriate practices.

Q&A
“We can’t wait to get started,” said Lori Suzuki. “I’m excited to see how the children will progress in a full-day program. ”
Another benefit of the fullday kindergarten program is the ability to slow the pace of the day for students. “Everything is on speed dial in the half-day program,” said Amy Driscoll, “with the longer kindergarten day, we’re better able to support all areas of a child’s development.”
Developmentally appropriate practices also include spending time learning through play “I’m excited about the added time for play and learning through play It ’s true that play is the work of children,” added Barb Garvey.
Continued from page 21
Q: Can you share something you love about working in the Oak Park/ River Forest area?
A: It’s the relationships with students, families, residents, and colleagues that is undeniably special about working in this community The teachers agreed that they love working and connecting with families who are so invested in their children’s education and support the efforts of our schools. “Our PTOs and families are so supportive,” explained Lori Suzuki. While Amy Driscoll added, “It’s also reassuring that our fellow teachers remain in District 90. The longevity of our colleagues enables us to bring consistency and shared energy to our schools and practice.”

Dr. Ushma Shah District 97 Superintendent
Q&A
Q: How long have you been the Superintendent for Oak Park’s District 97?
A: I have served as superintendent since June 1, 2022.
Q: Can you describe what your role is at the school district?
A: The District 97 Board of Education hires the superintendent to implement the community’s vision for its children. I work with all of our staff to recommend and enact systems, plans and high-quality practices that deliver on this vision.
Q: Have there been any surprises that you can share from your time in this role?
A: I’m surprised by the level of eagerness there is to transform systems and serve
ALL students. Change is difficult, and I can see that Oak Park is courageous in its vision to serve students. I am excited to serve the community at this important time.
To be honest, I’m also surprised by how many emails I get every day I prefer to talk with people and will be looking for more ways for that to be the preferred mode of communication.
Q: What have been some of your favorite aspects of the job and why?
A: The fact that we have the opportunity to listen to students and to allow their voices to shape how we lead is amazing. Students have historically been receivers in schools. The current state of the world requires that students learn how to be designers of the future.
As we engage in the Portrait of a Graduate process, our District 97 staff has the collective expertise to figure out how to facilitate that learning for EVERY student. Working collaboratively with staff members and community partners to activate that inherent power it is motivating.
Q: Can you share something you love about working in the Oak Park/River Forest area?
A: I love that we are a village of big thinkers and that we expect people to feel welcomed and included in our community We’ve got work to do to get to that vision -- and most folks I’ve met here explicitly express a desire to achieve it. I love that we are eager to walk our talk around our values of fundamental human respect across a diversity of identities.

Matt Walsh
River Forest Village Administrator
Q: How long have you been with the Village of River Forest?
A: Prior to becoming Village Administrator, I served as Assistant to the Village Administrator then Assistant Village Administrator The titles may be different but I worked closely with my predecessor Brian Murphy and all Department Heads in each role. I joined River Forest in April 2022.
Q: Can you describe what your role is as the Village Administrator?
A: As Village Administrator, I am responsible for overseeing all dayto-day operations of the Village. This includes a broad range of
duties including responding to resident questions and concerns, advising the Village Board and monitoring village expenses. I am also responsible for maintaining positive working relationships with our intergovernmental partners both within the Village and beyond.
Q: Have there been any surprises that you can share from your time with the village?
A: Luckily, surprises have been kept to a minimum in my tenure so far I would like to keep it that way!
Q: What have been some of your favorite aspects of the job and why?
QA: I am fortunate to have an extremely dedicated and experienced group of department heads and elected officials. I enjoy learning from each of them on village history and best practices.
Q: Can you share something you love about working in the Oak Park/River Forest area?
&A GETTING TO KNOW
A: I spent most of my life living in neighboring Forest Park, and it is a joy to walk the same streets that I once would ride bikes through. I enjoy making the short walk over to grab a slice at Frank’s Deli then sitting on a bench in Keystone Park on a nice day for lunch.

Great Things Happening in River Forest
Public Safety Investment
The Village prioritizes providing first responders the tools they need to provide a safe community. Recently, the Village installed Phase II of a state-of-the-art street camera system that assists the police department with crime deterrence, investigations, and officer deployment. By the end of 2023, the expansion will fully cover the Village.
The Fire Department recently purchased a training prop that allows the department to simulate dozens of scenarios on Village property. This allows the department to practice using familiar equipment and saves time and money by removing the need to travel to other training facilities. The prop will also be used for public education events.
Infrastructure Improvements
This summer, the Village will have completed the expedited alley improvement program. In total, 29 alleys will be upgraded with new concrete pavement and permeable pavers. These alleys are designed to reduce flooding in a sustainable way. The project was funded in part by a grant from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.
Cross Community Climate Collaborative
Last summer, Village President Cathy Adduci teamed up with Oak Park President Vicki Scaman and Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson to create the Cross Community Climate Collaborative,
or C4. C4 is designed to bring together BIPOC and nonminority communities across income lines to share ideas, secure resources, and drive large-scale projects within and across communities that achieve agreed upon greenhouse gas emissions reductions, equity and sustainability goals. 15 communities have signed on to participate in C4, and the group has already been successful in obtaining grant funding for initiatives.
One grant, from the American Beverage Foundation provides $125,000 specifically aimed at addressing childhood obesity and environmental health.

Green Town Conference
One of the initiatives of C4 is hosting the 2023 GreenTown Conference on June 22, 2023 at Triton College. The annual conference brings together community leaders to tackle climate change, promote equity, and achieve sustainability outcomes. The agenda covers a broad range of topics, including energy, transportation, waste management, workforce development, water conservation, technology innovation, and equitable solutions to the climate crisis.
Corridor Redevelopment Planning
The Village hired the renowned urban planning firm Houseal Lavigne to assist with the examination of the Village’s zoning codes. Specifically, Houseal Lavigne is examining commercial regulations for North Avenue and Madison Street. The intent is to update the code to be more applicable in today’s challenging development environment, while still considering the impact of potential development on the residential neighborhoods. Economic development on the corridors will attract services and amenities for residents, while also growing the property tax base.
Age Friendly Report
The Age Friendly Advisory Committee completed its work on an age friendly report and action plan for River Forest. The Committee surveyed older adults and analyzed the results before drafting a list of recommendations for Village Board consideration. The report covers topics such as civic engagement, technology, housing, social participation, and transportation. The recommendations will help guide decision making with a focus on improving the quality of life for older adults living in town.

Zero Waste events divert trash from landfills, promote education on sustainability
By Fiona Roach Contributing Reporter
From block parties to Beer Fests, more and more events in Oak Park and River Forest have taken on the goal of Zero Waste, aiming to redirect trash from landfills and encourage sustainable practices.
Gary Cuneen, Founder and Executive Director of Seven Generations Ahead (SGA),
has worked to help events such
as River Forest’s LemonAid and the Oak Park Microbrew Review reduce their waste. According to Cuneen, planning and communication are key to reaching Zero Waste.
“The easiest way to do Zero Waste events is to just build it into the structure of the event from the beginning,” Cuneen said. “If event producers start with that in mind, then it ’s going to be a lot easier to achieve Zero Waste.”
Cuneen said SGA sets up recycling
and composting bins at their Zero Waste events with volunteers present to help people sort their trash. It also provides instructions to participating restaurants to ensure they understand what is required of them to ensure Zero Waste.
If a restaurant or company is noncompliant or not “engendering the spirit” of waste reduction, they will not be invited back the next year, according to Cuneen.

Particularly with events that serve food and drink, the Zero Waste model offers environmental benefits by reducing the amount of methane released into the air through food decomposition in landfills.
“The big goal is to keep food scraps and other organic materials out of landfills so that that methane is not produced and then that will impact climate change,” Cuneen said. “It ’s not one size fits all, but I think structurally, there just has to be clear communication and guidelines upfront.”
In addition to larger community events, smaller
gatherings like block parties can also commit to Zero Waste through green block party kits, available in both Oak Park and River Forest.
Erica Helms, environmental services manager in The Village of Oak Park, said these kits are “very popular.” The kits often include kidfriendly programming, designed to teach children about sustainability and the environment.
“It ’s all about the future. We want to make sure that the youth is knowledgeable and understands how their behavior impacts their community,” Helms said.
“The more educated your neighbors are, the more likely that knowledge will spread.”

2023 local real estate snapshot
This data represents sales of single-family homes and condo/townhomes in Oak Park, River Forest, Berwyn, and Elmwood Park from March 1, 2022 to February 28, 2023. In addition to total homes sold and average sale prices, we’ve also included two stats: Market Time and Sales Price/ Listing Price Ratio that show how rapidly the current market is moving.
Market Time is the number of days a property is on the market from the time it is listed until the day that it closes. In “normal” times, a seller might put their home on the market and expect it to go under contract within a month or two. Following that, it might take another month for the home to close.
A market time of 35 days, as we see for Oak Park single-family homes, is an unusually low number that may indicate homes going under contract within days or hours of being listed.
Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio indicates the percentage of the listing price that a property was sold for. You might expect this number to be less than 100%, since buyers often try to negotiate discounts off the listing price. If the number is 100%, as it is for Oak Park single-family homes, that means sellers are getting exactly what they are asking.
Our thanks to the Oak Park Area Association of Realtors for providing these statistics.

Preservation in Oak Park
By Lacey Sikora Contributor Editor
Like much of the country, Oak Park’s interest in historic preservation took off in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. In 1969, the village commissioned the Hasbrouck Sprague plan, which identified 264 historically significant homes in the village. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple became Oak Park’s first National Historic Landmark in 1971, and in 1974, the Home and Studio Foundation, the precursor to today’s Frank Lloyd Wright Trust, was founded with a mission of restoring the iconic building on Forest and Chicago Avenues.
The Pieritz Brothers building (above) on Oak Park Avenue features terra cotta gryphons. Its owners are considering redevelopment.
Since that time, the village has designated three historic districts, and the FLW Trust, Pleasant Home Foundation and Oak Park and River Forest Historical Society have educated generations on historic preservation. Formed in the wake of the demolition of E.E. Robertsdesigned Hill Motor Building, Preservation Oak Park is carrying the torch with a Facebook group and in-person meetings on preservation issues in the village.
Pictured are a handful of buildings that illustrate the role of preservation in Oak Park.

Joslyn Bowling Dixon Oak Park Public Library Executive Director
Q: Can you describe what your role is at the library?
A: Under the direction of the Oak Park Public Library Board of Trustees, as the Executive Director, I work to maintain the Oak Park Public Library in ways that anticipate and fulfill the needs of the Oak Park community I am responsible for every phase of library strategy, including administration and management of operations, programs, collections and services, library staff, multifaceted strategic plan implementation, technology, public relations, outreach and marketing, buildings and grounds, equipment, and budget.
Q: Have there been any surprises that you can share from your time in this role?
A: Not really I think it has been a bonus for me and the Library that I worked at OPPL early in my library career, so I knew the library’s culture and the Oak Park community vibe very well coming into this new opportunity to serve as Executive Director.
Q: What have been some of your favorite aspects of the job and why?
A: Getting to work with colleagues I knew from working here before and how we all have grown and developed into the librarians we are today. I also really love developing relationships with the new teams and how they have made the library what it is today- a Five Star Library 15 years running. Last, but not least, one of the best aspects is connecting with the community, whether it ’s asking questions, like at my recent series of Listening Sessions, or participating in OPRF Chamber of Commerce events or just
PROVIDED
stopping to talk to patrons while walking through the Library.
Q: Can you share something you love about working in the Oak Park/ River Forest area?
Q&A GETTING TO KNO
A: It’s just so beautifully cool here in OP/RF-from the architecture, to the restaurants, to the vocal advocacy for the good of the community, to the style, to the people- it ’s a SCENE! OPRF will always be one of those places in my heart that takes my breath away

Q&A
Brian Wolowitz River Forest Public Library Adult & Teen Services
Q: How long have you been the Adult and Teen Services Librarian at the River Forest Public Library?
A: I have been an Adult & Teen Services Librarian at the River Forest Public Library since January 2022.
Q; Tell me about your role at the library.
A: There are three main pillars to my role. First, I plan and oversee all the adult programs and events for the library This includes history lectures, concerts, yoga classes, film screenings, trivia competitions, crafting workshops, theatrical performances, and a variety ofother programming aimed at adults and seniors.Second, I manage the adult fiction collection and a few other collections. And third, I provide direct service to patrons at the Adult & Teen Services Desk on the second floor of the library.
Q; Have there been any surprises that you can share from your time in this role?
A: I have sometimes been surprised by which programs are the most popular with patrons. We had a huge turnout for a talk by an attorney about wills and estate planning, and I had no idea so many people would show up It can also be surprising which books are in high demand. Often these books are popularized on TikTok or other social media, and those ofus who don’t use TikTok sometimes haven’t even heard of these books until patrons start requesting them
Q: What have been some ofyour favorite aspects ofthe job and why?
A: My favorite thing about the job is knowing that I am doing my part to help keep the wonderful institution ofpublic libraries alive.Libraries are more valuable now than ever, so I can really feel proud ofthe work we do here. I also enjoy working with a great group ofcolleagues who foster a very positive and supportive work environment.
Q: Can you share something you love about working in the River Forest/Oak Park area?
A: I grew up in Oak Park and my parents are still there,so it ’s been fun to return to my old stomping grounds and be able to easily see family. The area has changed a lot since I grew up and there is so much new stuff around,so it ’s cool to try out some of these new establishments that have sprung up in my absence.

Community Recreation Center
The opening of the Oak Park Park District’s Community Recreation Center on Madison Street this spring was the culmination of more than three years of planning and a collaboration between the Good Heart, Foundation and the Park District, with input from community stakeholders. Park District Executive Director Jan Arnold calls the Park District Boar “the little engine that could,” as she praises their foresight and vision in bringing access to healthy activities to the entire community
The CRC offers a year-round indoor walking track to residents at no cost; a safe place for youth of all ages to go after school; teen programming on weekends and evenings; sport courts; community meeting rooms and affordable fitness opportunities
and group classes. Arnold says individual memberships will cost $25 a month with parents able to access 90 minutes of childcare per visit for a $15 monthly fee.
the net-zero building will create all of the building energy itself. For Arnold the ribbon cutting in May was just the something to celebrate. She notes “We called our campaign ‘A Place to Belong,’ and the lessons of the pandemic showed us how important it is to access healthy activities and to able to socialize and engage with the community We are thrilled to get this space open. ”

Native Gardens gain popularity in Oak Park and River Forest
PHOTOS BY MARC STOPECK
By Fiona Roach Contributing Reporter
Throughout the past decade, native gardens have been popping up in yards across Oak Park and River Forest, replacing the traditional green grass lawn in front yards and parkways. According to Adrian Fisher, West Cook Wild Ones co-chair of programs and advocacy, this trend can help increase biodiversity and decrease carbon levels.
“It’s a new way of gardening that takes nature into account, and not just what we think looks pretty,” isher said. “And that’s really very important.”
Native gardens, which consist of plants that grow naturally in a particular area, provide habitats for pollinators and can even help prevent flooding. Due to the root system of many native plants, they can filter water and sequester carbon from the air
82 | 2023 O AKPARK.COM ANSWER BOOK
Fisher said that the West Cook Wild Ones sales have increased over the past few years, so much so that it now has two pickup locations for customers to get their plants.
“People are really getting the message that pesticides are no good in your yard,” Fisher said. “They’re really getting the message that the old fashioned American lawn is basically a biological desert that can only be maintained to perfection with many inputs of chemicals. People are looking for a more natural way to garden.”
