School of Rock
10th Anniversary at Fitzgeralds in
School of Rock Oak Park: Community, Confidence, Culture
By Fiona Roach Contributing ReporterWhen Amy Renzulli started sending her two children to School of Rock in Chicago for music lessons, she never dreamed she would open her own location of the franchise in her home neighborhood. But, with high population density, residents who value the arts and culture and easy
transportation for teaching artists who live in Chicago, Oak Park was just too perfect of a place to pass up Now, 11 years later, SOR Oak Park is one of the top music schools in the nation, bringing music education and community to 475 children and adults.
The school, located at 219 Lake St., has three show seasons a year, each with about 11 shows. Their “song first” philosophy aims to get students learning
real songs and up on stage as quickly as possible.
“I’ll give a student a song, maybe they’re assigned to perform that at some point,” said Jennifer Malone, director of music culture. “I’m going to not only teach them how to perform the song, but then I’m going to back it up and go, ‘Hey, that’s a really great example of jazz improvisation

and we’re going to talk about why.’”
SOR offers classes for people of all ages and abilities. For both children and adults, performing with a band can improve confidence and develop important life skills.
General Manager Abigail Keane said that she enjoys seeing students grow through the programs, as they become more comfortable onstage with the support of their peers and bandmates.
“It ’s just a great social environment for the kids to be in,” Keane said. “But it also helps teach them responsibility, because they’re more motivated to learn and practice at home when they have other kids in their same age group that are relying on them.”
SOR also provides a sense of community to students and staff members alike.
Music Director Ethan Loafman said that the school acts as a valuable “third place,” which is a social place aside from work,
• Coordinates all public art for the Village of Oak Park
• Runs the Off the Wall summer arts employment program
• Offers scholarship programs for high school seniors
• Showcases area artists’ artwork in gallery spaces around town
• Highlights arts events, auditions, calls for artists, employment opportunities in our bi-weekly newsletter e-ART
• Annually awards grants to over 30 arts organizations
• Fosters, supports, promotes the arts, arts organizations, artists and arts businesses in Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park
school or home where people can find joy and belonging.
For Renzulli, this community is one of the most rewarding results of founding the school.
“One of my favorite parts is just being in the midst of
such creative and talented and amazing people,” Renzulli said.
“I think all of these things, our reputation, our goodwill in the bank that we’ve created, has made us one of the best Schools of Rock in the world.”
The safety of our community remains our top priority
Providing a safe community begins with one of our most important resources – our first responders. The Police Department continues to host our Quarterly Safety Meetings, with the next meeting scheduled in late July. These meetings were established to provide an open forum for community members to ask questions, provide comments, and address any concerns relating to safety, while Police provide updates and education on crime prevention efforts. The Village invites all community members to attend one of these meetings and become engaged in our community’s safety. Future dates for this quarterly meeting can be found on the Village’s calendar at bit.ly/RiverForestCalendar.
Over the past 12 months, the Village successfully negotiated a new contract with the Fraternal Order of Police in two bargaining sessions. This contract allows the Village to remain a competitive and attractive destination for law enforcement professionals and enables our personnel to professionally advance through ongoing training and education. For open positions, please visit the Village website at vrf.us for more
information and how to apply for open positions in the Police Department.
The Department continues to place a strong emphasis on the importance of training. In 2023, officers completed nearly 6,000 training hours, which included the use of force, handling domestic violence situations, emergency medical response, managing school emergencies, and many other topics. Officers received more than 900 hours of training that covered procedural justice, ethics, impartial policing and how to assist citizens in crisis, including how to assist residents experiencing mental health challenges with compassion. In addition to using the federally and state funded 988 suicide and crisis lifeline (available 24/7), Police Officers also partner with THRIVE Counseling Center in Oak Park, who provides a social worker and counseling needed to assist during a mental health crisis. The Department also continues to stress the importance of its officers’ well-being. In 2023, a peer support program was created, and a wellness room was established for officers, to ensure they feel supported.
The Fire Department has also focused on ongoing training and education over the last year, both for staff and residents. In 2023, the Department saw an increase of nearly 300% of students attending CPR classes. This certification is an essential and important step in en-
suring our community members can provide lifesaving interventions until paramedics arrive and take control of life-saving efforts. Studies have shown that having a higher population trained in CPR can produce significantly higher rescue rates. For more information or to register for a CPR class, please visit vrf.us/CPR.
The Fire Department has also been teaming up with local schools. Deputy Fire Chief Bochenek and Fire Marshall Wiley recently consulted on the development of new fire prevention policies and procedures. As a result, District 90 is looking at changing their labeling of entry points in our schools and ensuring these best practices are followed throughout the school district.
The Fire Department recently received a new ambulance, which is being equipped with the latest life-saving technology to assist community members who call for help or need to be transported to the emergency room. This ambulance will be in service later this summer.

INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE
This spring, Village President Adduci appointed Jack Bielack to the role of Director of Public Works and Engineering. The Village welcomes Jack, who formerly served the Village of Northbrook where he most recently served as the Village Engineer, to this important role within the Village to ensure our streets, sidewalks and other vital infrastructure is maintained and updated as needed to serve our community.
The Village is well underway on a number of construction projects throughout town, not the least of which is street improvement. Through the REBUILD Illinois grant, the Village is improving the street surface of Augusta Street and William Street, north of Chicago Avenue, as well as parts of Thatcher

Activities would include achieving agreed upon greenhouse gas emissions reductions, as well as equity and sustainability goals. In early 2024, C4 and the Village of Broadview were awarded an Energy Futures Grant from the Department of Energy in the amount of $476,487. This grant helps state, local, and tribal governments transition to renewable energy in an equitable and just manner, while also prioritizing disadvantaged communities. The State of Illinois, recognizing the value of the mission of C4, has appropriated $500,000 for fiscal year 2025. These funds will support C4 initiatives and allow it to continue to make a positive impact on our communities.
Avenue and Hawthorne Avenue on the south end of the Village. ADA curb ramps on these intersections will also be improved where needed as part of this program. The annual sidewalk replacement program, which should address more than 400 sidewalk squares across the Village, will begin later this summer. In addition, the Invest in Cook grant program has provided the Village with $100,000 to replace an additional 35 curb ramps with ADA warning pads.
The Village continues to work with the Village of Elmwood Park on a joint project to beautify the North Avenue corridor. The project is currently in the planning phase and is expected to include additional landscaping and an improved pedestrian experience, as well as additional drainage to prevent water pooling and flooding. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity has set aside $21M to assist the Village in funding this project. The Phase 1 agreement is waiting with State for approval to move forward with the engineering portion of this project.
The Village is also working to identify all lead service lines within River Forest as part of a commitment to meet the requirements of the Illinois Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act. Village Staff members are currently gathering information and taking all steps necessary to identify these lines throughout the community. To submit information regarding your water service line, please
visit vrf.us/leadsurvey. If you are considering water service replacement work on your home, please visit vrf.us to learn more about our cost share program or call 708-366-8500 for additional information or for any questions.

Village President Adduci hosted her first “Meet with the Village President” breakfast at the River Forest Community Center in late May to create stronger connections with community members. It was a great success. Not only does she enjoy speaking with residents in an informal setting, but also appreciates the feedback shared by those who were able to attend this first event. Village President Adduci looks forward to continuing this quarterly event, with the next event to be held on Saturday, August 31 from 9 - 10:30 a.m. at the Depot at Keystone Park. Keep an eye on Village e-newsletters for additional details on this and future meetings with the Village President!

Unique Oak Park Library lending program offers more than books to borrowers
Nontraditional items from sewing machines to GoPro cameras are available for community use via the “Library of Things”By STEPHEN SONNEVELD Contributing reporter
Where, once, a cardholder could only be lent a book to learn about arts and crafts, Oak Park Public Library’s Library of Things makes it possible to actually perform arts and crafts by checking out a sewing kit, a grommet press, a Fiskars paper cutter, a laptop with creative suite software, plus a folding table to place all of the items on.
Publications from the Public Library Association reveal that the trend to offer communities more than books started in the 2010’s. “[These] collections are often built to meet specific wants and needs,” Barbara Fitzgerald, the library’s Manger of Collections, stated.
Fitzgerald views nontraditional lending as continuing the library’s mission to benefit Oak Park residents, believing the Library of Things “has the potential to build capacity for literacy and education, prepare people for
continuously changing technology, improve patrons’ lives through opportunities to create and learn new skills, and provide equitable access to resources, and prioritizing sustainability.”
The Library of Things, which Fitgerald states Oak Park residents have embraced with “passion and enthusiasm,” are curated into four categories: Do It Yourself (DIY), Entertainment, Outdoors and Technology
The public can view the options at the Lake Street location, or peruse the
selection online at www.oppl. org/lot. A link even connects to an accompanying section, “Beyond Books,” which offers a bevy ofadditional diverse items.
Oak Park Library borrowers 18+ must sign a lending agreement in person. All checkouts must also be done in person at the main branch’s service desk. Common sense would dictate not to return a rented Roku device in the overnight deposit box where an errant copy of War and Peace could flatten it.Nevertheless, cardholders must also agree to return the items to the service desk, after their threeweek,no renewal, checkout.
According to Fitzgerald, the “refurbished and expanded Oak Park Library of Things” debuted in the fall of2023, thanks to a,“unexpected and generous gift” from the estate ofBarbara Ballinger, the long-time Head Librarian, who retired in 1991. “With a portion ofthat gift, the Collections team purchased several previously requested, non-traditional items. The team then worked to categorize and combine those items with already-available technology.”
Helping expand this innovative program was not Ballinger’s only innovation
during her 33-year career
In addition to creating the library’s Ernest Hemingway Foundation Archives, the Wednesday Journal previously reported she was “largely responsible for the current SWAN network that allows for the seamless distribution ofmaterials throughout [suburban libraries.]”
Without an electric drill for your latest do it yourself(DIY) project? Perhaps grandma would like to rock out with a karaoke machine at the next family gathering?
Traditionally, residents in need ofsuch items, often for a one-time use, would either have to make expensive purchases,or find a reputable vendor willing to rent them.
In response to community requests to resolve that conundrum, the main branch ofthe Oak Park Public Library (834 Lake Street) established a nontraditional lending program entitled “the Library of Things.”
While it is not uncommon for university libraries to lend technology, such as cameras to photography students, for instance, the idea ofa public library lending out an item, such as a wall socket adapter for overseas travel, shows how far the institution itselfhas evolved.
Since 2010, Austin Coming Together has been working with a 50+ member network to improve education and economic development outcomes in Austin by:
connecting residents to services attracting investments for the community and building capacity for policy change
WHO WE ARE
For over 50 years, the Community Mental Health Board of Oak Park Township (CMHB) has invested in a continuum of mental health, substance use, and intellectual/developmental disability treatment that is responsive to Oak Park’s unique and evolving needs. We provided nearly $1.4M last year to help local organizations and schools offer prevention, early intervention, treatment, and quality-of-life services to Oak Park residents.
Our Community Is Facing Unprecedented Challenges: Mental Health
• Rates of depression in youth doubled following the pandemic.
• Adult depression and anxiety soared four-fold since 2019.
Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities
• Illinois ranks 46th in the country for funding and support of the estimated 300,000 Illinoisans with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
• Over 15,000 people are on the state list waiting to be approved for I/DD funding.

2024 local real estate snapshot
This data represents sales of single-family homes and condo/townhomes in Oak Park and River Forest from May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024. In addition to total homes sold and average sale prices, we’ve also included two stats: Market Time and Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio that show how rapidly the current market is moving.
Market Time is the number of days a property is on the market from the time it is listed until the day that it closes. In “normal” times, a seller might put their home on the market and expect it to go under contract within
a month or two. Following that, it might take another month for the home to close. A low Market Time number indicates a strong market that favors sellers.
Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio indicates the percentage of the listing price that a property was sold for. You might expect this number to be less than 100%, since buyers often try to negotiate discounts off the listing price. If the number is 100%, as it is in Oak Park, that means sellers are getting exactly what they are asking.
Our thanks to the Oak Park Area Association of Realtors for providing these statistics.

Small-scale gardening in the ‘World’s Largest Village’
Elizabeth Short Contributor ReporterWalking in Oak Park, you might notice looming trees, unique houses, and small, pristine lawns. Once in a while, a flourishing front yard garden br this pattern.
Gardening is a great boost health, grow community and help to fight climate change from home. While it can seem daunting to start, a number of organizations exist to support new and experienced gardeners in the Oak
The Deep Roots Project is an Oak Park-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping community members create edible and native gardens. The organization uses the method of regenerative gardening to nourish plants — a method created by horticulturist Rafaela Crevoshay, who applied principles of restorative agriculture to gardening.
Deep Roots uses 100% compost instead of soil. This method feeds microbes which regenerate in the soil, boosting plant growth and helping plants to pull more
fossil fuels out of the atmosphere. Deep Roots also sells raised plant beds made of cedar, specifically designed to survive Chicago winters.
Estelle Carol, executive director of Deep Roots, started gardening after she became a mother, hoping to use gardening to provide affordable, “pure, wonderful organic food.” She taught herself to garden through the internet. At first, the garden “did not (do) so great,” she said. It wasn’t until after she met Crevoshay and began using the method of regenerative gardening that “everything blossomed and bloomed and went out of control.”
Gardening — especially gardening that prioritizes native and edible plants — is “just a better use of the space” than a front lawn, which requires a lot of water and can be said
can boost mental and emotional health, minimize food costs, and promotes sharing and community, she said.
“You’re doing something that’s good for your health, for your family’s health, and for the planet’s health,” Carol said. “And it’s fun just to watch the plants grow and flourish.”
For new gardeners, Carol recommends that you “start small.” Raised beds are the easiest way to start in a front yard — balcony gardeners can use fabric grow bags. A mix of native plants will help to attract “beneficial bugs” that eat invasive pests.
Carol purchases new seedlings from Good Earth Greenhouse in River Forest and immediately repots them in small containers after returning home; it’s important to buy seedlings just after they’ve been delivered while they’re fresh.
Plants in the brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, kale, etc.) have to be protected from pests under garden hoops and netting or floating row covers. ally screwed if they ol clarified.

Oak Park Restaurants Appreciate Outdoor Seating Even after Pandemic
ABy Fiona Roach Contributing Reportert the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, restaurants across Oak Park searched for innovative ways to maintain business despite health restrictions.
For many, that meant expanding their dining areas to outdoor sidewalk seating, sometimes even barricading off parking spaces for tables and chairs.
Patrick O’Brien, chef and owner of Scratch Kitchen and Lounge, said this expanded seating was “critical” at the time of the pandemic.
“Right after COVID when people were still a little freaked out about coming inside and there were masks, the dining room would be empty and the patio would be full,” O’Brien said. “And that was not a shock.”
With sidewalk dining and parking space seating, O’Brien was able to offer over 30 additional seats at a time when many businesses were struggling. He also added a tent, lights, a TV and speakers to his parking space.
At the start of the pandemic, O’Brien said the Village of
dining at Amerikas on May 8, 2024. OUTDOOR DINING on page 60
Oak Park was “generous” in allowing restaurants to have this expanded space for free. Now, however, businesses must pay for a parking space dining area, which O’Brien still found to be worth it.
“Last year I had to pay for the parking spots, but I easily flipped the bill,” O’Brien said.“Outdoor dining is certainly important to my business.”
Today, while sidewalk seating isn’t quite as critical as during the pandemic,it remains highly popular, according to Amerikas Restaurant Manager Crystal Escalante.
“Especially in Chicago, we only have a certain amount oftime where we have great weather,” Escalante said.“Having wine and nice conversation with your friends, those are some ofthe things that we get from our customers and they love it. They just love being outside.”
Papaspiros Manager William Rakes said that sidewalk seating can even be an additional form of free
advertisement. He said that customers will often walk by after an event at nearby Scoville Park and decide to sit down for a drink or a quick bite.
“It’s very nice because a car normally would park and block our space and people wouldn’t see as much,” Rakes said.“Now, we’re much more visible. We can put plants on the barricade
walls and it just gives us a much more marketable look.”
Rakes also said that a lot ofhis customers have pets, and even those who don’t will typically always choose to sit outside, weather permitting. So, even as the pandemic comes to a close, outdoor dining is here to stay.

While today’s Downtown Oak Park along Lake east of Harlem grew to be the larger business district after the 1920s with the arrival of Chicago department store branches, the Avenue’s Scoville Park increasingly became the community “front lawn” after it became the first public park in 1912 and the locally owned businesses, restaurants, offices, and merchants have created a unique business district that features local flavor and a strong connection to the community’s roots. The Economy Shop: Go Green, Find Unique Items and Give Back to the Community
Fiona Roach Contributing ReporterSituated on the corner of South Boulevard and South Grove Avenue, the 105-year-old Economy Shop offers shoppers an opportunity to shop sustainably while also curating a one-of-a-kind wardrobe. The shop, which holds three sales a month except in the summer, donates all of its proceeds to seven local charities.
The Economy Shop was founded in
1919 by a group of women who aimed to create a place for donated clothing, home goods and more to find a new home, while simultaneously supporting charities that help Oak Park and its surrounding communities.
“Women obtained the right to vote in 1920,” said Ellen Brooks, Economy Shop director of operations. “So, in 1919, to be established by a group of women was quite an undertaking.”
Today, the Economy Shop donates to the Animal Care League, Beyond
Hunger, Housing Forward, Thrive Counseling Center, The Day Nursery, Infant Welfare Society and the Senior Citizens Center Each of these organizations receive an equal amount of donations on a monthly basis.
Recently, the shop has seen an influx of younger shoppers, mostly looking for unique clothing items. Brooks said that most of their advertising happens through word of mouth, but they also

looking for a good bargain.
“Second hand shopping is one easy way you can go green. It’s also a great way to get a one-of-a-kind wardrobe,” Brooks said. “It also seems that in general fashion, the retro look has been coming back.”
“We do have a large customer base that is very loyal,” Brooks said. “They come to every single sale and are always on the lookout for something specific.”
The donated items are received and sorted by a team of four staff members and over 100 volunteers, according to Brooks. The shop then offers three sales a month: one sale on a Thursday and two on Saturdays.
Brooks also said that the shop receives a large amount of support from the people of Oak Park, as customers appreciate that their money goes directly back to the community through local nonprofits.
“We see a lot of support from the community,” Brooks said. “We always have.”
