A Saturday afternoon donation drive for new parents at an Austin church had to be canceled after most of the items were taken by a group of people who entered the church and took diapers, formulas and wipes Friday without permission.

The “Baby Bank” donation drive was planned for two months, according to Pastor Michael Wright of the Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church of Austin, 854 N. Central Ave. But it had to be scrapped after 12-15 people took advantage of an employee working alone on Friday and took all the items set aside for community members in need.

On Saturday, Wright had to explain to people showing up that the event was called off. He said there will be future events and said anyone who wants to donate items can drop items off during the week at the church from 9 a.m. to See EASTER DIAPER THEFT on page 4

cero, because of stories like the one told by the anonymous driver who said he wanted to share his experiences working for the company on the condition they remain anonymous.

“They overwork you,” said the driver, who requested anonymity because they

fear retaliation by Amazon. The plural pronoun is being used to protect the person’s identity.

Austin resident organizes spring cleaning

Around 50 community members Austin took to the streets on the morning of April 3 for the Austin Village Spring Cleaning Rally.

The event was organized by life-long Austin resident David Fleming, owner of the Wecycle street cleaning company. Fleming said he wanted to do something nice for the community and promote his business in the process.

The clean-up kicked off 5922 W. Division St. and proceeded east on Division Street, then south on Central Avenue before turning west on Chicago Avenue until they reached 5840 W. Chicago Ave. Fleming said that the idea isn’t just to clean up, but to raise the spirit of a community battered by the pandemic. He said that he has support from Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th), whose ward includes Austin, as well as several Austin community organizations.

Wecycle didn’t get a cleaning contract until some private entities hired the company to do snow removal last winter. Fleming was able to hire around 30 people, but with the warm weather, he worried about how much longer he’d be able to keep employing them.

“Running a business during the pandem-

ic has been tough,” he said. “It’s very, very difficult without the resources, without the financial support and with things being closed and shut down, it’s made it even more difficult. But we’re tenacious, we’re resilient, and I think we’ve been through the worst of it.”

Fleming said that a few of his employees will be joining in, but he mostly sees the clean-up as a community effort.

“We encourage people to come out and volunteer,” he said. “Show appreciation and respect for the community.”

Taliaferro attended the Saturday cleanup, along with Malcolm Crawford, the executive director of the Austin African American Business Networking Association.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to show the community spirit, and I want to thank

Wecycle for coming out and showing that community spirit, getting residents moving,” Taliaferro said.

Crawford said the clean-up embodies “all that’s great” about the community and that he changed his plans so he could be part of it.

“Those are real community people,” he said. “Being out here on the ground, talking to people, putting your hands on brooms, cleaning your community — this is real altruism.”

“That’s why I don’t mind cleaning up,” he said. “Every little bit you pick up helps.”

W. Side group launches plan to revive economic corridors West Garfield Park Corridors Plan would flesh out ways to revitalize Madison Street and Pulaski Road

West Side groups are launching a plan to revitalize two major commercial corridors and bring back critical resources to West Garfield Park help residents live longer, healthier lives.

The project, called the West Garfield Park Corridors Plan, aims to be a communitydriven blueprint to overhaul the economic engines of the neighborhood: Madison Street and Pulaski Road. The plan is in the early stages, but it could involve strategies to combat food scarcity, healthcare deserts, educational gaps and crime.

The Madison and Pulaski plan is a central component of the Garfield Park Wellness Collaborative, a coalition of West Side groups dedicated to ending health disparities by building “an ecosystem that allows for folks to be fiscally, physically and mentally healthy,” Executive Director TJ Craw-

ford said.

Partners include Bethel New Life, Rush University Medical Center, New Mount Pilgrim Church, the Garfield Park Community Council, West Side United, Community Builders and Habilitative Systems, Inc. The project’s organizers will work with West Garfield Park residents and groups to identify the assets and amenities needed in the neighborhood. Better-equipped commercial strips would chip away at the social inequities — like income and access to medical care — that have resulted in poorer health for West Siders, Crawford said.

“Healthy environments will produce healthy people living in those environments,” Crawford said.

West Garfield Park residents are expected to live an average of 69 years — a lifespan shorter than any other West Side neighborhood, according to a 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University report. Residents of the Loop are expected to live 16 years longer, to an average age of 85.

The collaborative is identifying an urban planning team to guide the corridor-planning process, which will be driven by community participation, said Kemena Brooks, a project manager with Community Builders.

Wright described how the items were taken Friday.

“Two ladies came to the door and asked if the Baby Bank was going on. He said ‘no, but there’s some stuff downstairs,’” he said.

“Those two ladies came in and got some stuff and then when they left, they propped the door with a cone and then others started coming.”

Wright said he believes the two women had a bad motive and spread the word to between 12-15 people with similar motivations.

The side door that they accessed has a sign on it reading “Smile, you’re on camera” and Wright said he has about 15 videos showing people coming and going with items.

In all, the church, which has been in Austin for nearly 57 years, had about 10 folding tables in its basement stacked with items like diapers, baby wipes and baby formula that were taken, Wright said. He said the church’s previous giveaway brought people from all over and stretched halfway around the block. He expected 500 to 600 people Saturday.

Asked if the people who took the items may have needed them, Wright said it was pretty clear that they took advantage of the situation.

“We wouldn’t have gave them as much as they took. It was a group of about 12-15 peo-

Residents who are already engaged in the early planning process have said they want the Madison and Pulaski corridors to feel safer and more walkable, Brooks said.

Neighbors also suggested beautifying the streetscape, cleaning up dilapidated buildings and vacant lots and improving existing storefronts, Brooks said.

The corridors plan is expected to be completed within nine months.

“The planning effort will highlight what currently exists in the community and what are gaps,” Brooks said. “Is there enough access to fresh food? Is there enough access to health services? … How do we start to fill in the gaps in services, in programs, in buildings that don’t exist there?”

Access to medical care alone doesn’t account for the massive death gap, said Dr. David Ansell, senior vice president for equity at Rush University Medical Center and author of “The Death Gap: How Inequality Kills.”

At the core of the “death gap” is an extensive history of policy rooted in white supremacy that has drained Black and Latino neighborhoods of social, political and economic capital, Ansell said.

“These are not just historic processes.

These are ongoing processes,” Ansell said.

Pointing to one woman in a video carrying out a box a diapers, Wright said “that box is 180 diapers. She had three of those boxes in her hands.” He added that they usually open the boxes and give portions of what’s inside to those in need, along with baby wipes and formula.

Wright said most of the items were donated by Church of the Resurrection in Wheaton, an Anglican Church that Christ Tabernacle partners with. He said despite the fact that the church’s cameras were sending alerts starting at 2 p.m. all the way

to past 5 p.m., the church’s administrator was home and did not access her computer until around 5 p.m. Once she saw what was happening, they notified the Chicago Police and called Wright.

“This happened in broad daylight. It started around 2 in the afternoon until 5 p.m.

Our security cameras were going off but our administrator didn’t see her computer until around 5 p.m. People were just coming in and out, taking stuff and laughing. They didn’t care,” Wright said.

Wright said he drove to the church from his Westchester home Friday evening and was “devastated” to see most of the items were gone.

“This was going to be right before Easter. And we don’t just give the stuff and

These communities are now burdened with conditions that lead to poor health and shorter lifespans, like food scarcity, unemployment, pharmacy deserts, crime and underfunded schools.

“We’re seeing in areas where jobs have left, capital has left, that life expectancy drops. So without good jobs that pay well, without education, people can’t thrive,” Ansell said. “We’ve got to move the opportunity to where the people are.”

He added, “We aren’t a wealthy church.

We’re not in the suburbs. We’re on the West Side.”

The Chicago Police responded around 6 p.m. and made a report, but did not consider it a criminal event, according to CPD spokesman Anthony Spicuzza.

“The detectives on the scene deemed it non-criminal because the person who opened the door works for the church and is partaking in the event tomorrow. So, I wouldn’t say they stole it because he let them in,” Spicuzza said Friday night.

Wright said while it may not be criminal, he definitely thinks the people who took items took advantage of the situation and knew better.

“No one was down here, no lights were on. He left the door open by accident. They propped the door open and people just came in taking a whole bunch.They were just coming down grabbing stuff.”

Asked if he’d like to see those who took items pursued by the police, Wright said, “I don’t know. I don’t know about that. It’s just a situation that happened and it’s a bad situation.”

Affordable townhomes come to East Garfield Park

The Harrison Row Townhomes will be held in a covenant to keep the homes affordable for 30 years, a move that aims to prevent more gentrification

The first set of homes in a West Side affordable housing development have been completed, bringing cost-effective options to an area where housing costs are rising faster than any other part of the city.

The seven three-bedroom houses at the Harrison Row Townhomes, built by Structured Development, are designed for families earning a combined income of up to $100,000. When completed, the Harrison Row Townhomes will have at least 50 affordable family homes at 2849-59 W. Congress Parkway, a former industrial site that has been vacant for 20 years.

The houses will be bound to a covenant with the Chicago Community Land Trust for 30 years to “preserve that affordability and mitigate any future displacement from encroaching gentrification,” said Michael Drew, founding principle at Structured Development. The towhomes will start at $229,000.

“It provides a significant investment in a previously under-invested neighborhood and provides a stable housing option,” Drew said.

Structured Development is building the homes as part of its obligations under the city’s Affordable Requirements Ordinance.

It requires developers receiving city assistance on a residential project to make a certain percentage of units affordable, build affordable homes at a separate site or pay a fee.

The Garfield Park homes are part of the developer’s affordable housing requirement stemming from the Shops at Big Deahl, a mixed-use complex the firm is building in the Near North Side, which will also have some affordable units on site.

The Harrison Row Townhomes are being built as a joint venture with Fain’s Development, a Black-owned company based in Garfield Park. Fain’s took a backseat for the first seven homes, but it will have a financial stake in the next phase of the project, which will build 13 duplexes with three bedrooms per unit.

The partnership will allow the local company to share in profits and gain experience in building affordable homes, which require more expertise than marketrate houses, said Fain’s principal Kevin Brinson.

“These are things that we’re going to have to know if we’re able to take this experience on our resume … to be able to do future practice,” Brinson said. “It shows us everything from beginning to end. … That

gives us an edge over everybody else.”

Brinson is a lifelong West Sider and has lived in Garfield Park for decades, so preserving affordability is a priority for his company, he said.

An analysis of home prices by the Institute of Housing Studies showed that in 2018, East Garfield Park property values increased by 20 percent, the highest growth in the city.

“We’re talking about an area that’s being gentrified right now. And there’s an opportunity to bring back working-class families,” Brinson said.

Only first-time homebuyers are eligible to buy the houses, and the buyers must be within specific income limits. The properties must be owner-occupied, and the

homes can’t be rented out.

The covenant also restricts how much homeowners can sell the houses for if they later move away. Any buyers for the next 30 years must also fall under the same income eligibility requirements, Drew said.

“They will not be able to benefit from flipping or gentrification. It is limited to another affordable income-qualified family that would buy the unit. So it provides stability,” Drew said.

by Be Righteous Baptist Assembly Church, the plan presented at the April meeting also included the 3601 W. Chicago Ave. site, which houses the Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago nonprofit organization’s West Side office. The city officials said that any redevelopment plans would be coordinated with the nonprofit.

During the April 1 meeting, residents suggested a whole slew of possible uses, including a small business incubator and a clothing store. There was broad agreement that social services could be used to address safety, and that the corridor would need more than just one site slated for development in order to achieve real revitalization.

As part of the Invest South/West, the city is looking to develop vacant sites along major West and South side corridors. For West Humboldt Park, DPD focused on the section of Chicago Avenue between Pulaski Road and Kedzie Avenue.

During the Feb. 26 meeting, city officials shared four potential sites. Most notably, they considered a site at the northeast corner of Pulaski Road and Chicago Avenue, within walking distance of the controversial Joint Public Safety Training Academy (better known as the “Cop Academy” among activists who opposed its construction), at 4301 W. Chicago Ave. Any large bid that DPD sends out must be approved by the Chicago Community Development Commission.

The Commission’s March 9 meeting agenda originally included a vote on putting Chicago/Pulaski site up for bid, but the item was pulled from the agenda.

During the April 1 community meeting, which was attended by around 50 residents, DPD revealed that it preferred the site between Montecello Avenue and Central Park Avenue, because it’s centrally located within the corridor and it made the most financial sense.

Samuel Sanders said he wanted affordable commercial spaces for new business owners and restaurant owners who lost their physical space due to the pandemic.

Community activist Keith Muhammad said that he wanted to see a fitness center and other amenities that would improve residents’ physical and mental health.

Maurice Hibbler suggested installing a

basketball court for local youth, adding that it would be a good place of teens to burn off some energy and keep busy, which would reduce crime. Other suggestions included a chain clothing store, a chiropractor and a dentist.

Brian Hacker, a DPD coordinating planner, asked whether residents had any concerns about setting up open public spaces given the level of crime on that part of Chicago Avenue.

“It doesn’t mean we can’t have activities on the street,” he said. “But how can these spaces be designed to maybe remedy that and have a positive impact on those conditions?”

Muhammad responded the best approach is to make sure the site has social services.

“We need all people on hand to have the wraparound programs to help deal with those who are [drug] users and those who are sellers and try to eliminate [the problem],” he said.

Derrick Ellis felt that the Joint Training Center would bring the crime down, adding that, more than anything, he was excited to see something happen.

“I’ve been over her for 50 years,” Ellis said.

“I have property on Chicago Avenue, I have businesses on Chicago Avenue, and I would like to see those ideas come to fruition, so I can see them before I die.”

West Humboldt Park Development Council Executive Director Adrienne Whitney-Boykin argued that the city should put the other three sites up to bid as well.

“We want to make it a corridor where everybody finds what they need without leaving the community, and if we don’t do it wisely, we’re going to lose people along the way,” she said. “It’s a small site, honestly and we’re trying to put so much in it that we’re losing our community piece.”

DPD Deputy Commissioner Gerardo Garcia didn’t rule out doing more RFPs in the future.

“This is the first round of investments as part of Invest South/West,” he said.

“Not every site can be everything. We can understand that. But it’s important that we set that vision, so we’re ready for the next site, and the site after that and the site after that.”

Former lot to be transformed into community plaza

Organizers are raising money to transform vacant lot at Central and Douglas into a “place to be”

A formerly vacant lot will soon become a community plaza that will host events, a mini-museum, a flower shop and a café.

Love Blooms Here Plaza at Central Park Avenue and Douglas Boulevard is being developed as a low-cost but highimpact gathering place for Lawndale residents. Members of the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council are creating attractions at the plaza that will be housed in retrofitted 20-foot shipping containers.

Organizers are raising $25,000 with a GoFundMe to landscape the plaza and customize the shipping containers for the flower shop and café.

“So many people with their different ideas and their missions and the spirit of the community, we really have created love. So that’s kind of why we say love blooms here, right here, wherever we put our shovel,” said Annamaria Leon, co-chair of the GROWWS Committee that is a partner on the project.

The land is owned by Stone Temple Missionary Baptist Church, which is across the street from the plaza at 3622 W. Douglas Blvd. The partnership with the church makes it easier to run several projects at a very low cost since visitors can access basic amenities like bathrooms at Stone Temple.

The Lawndale Pop-Up Spot, a community mini-museum formerly based at Spaulding Memorial Garden, is currently at the plaza. The museum was designed to be mobile so the exhibits housed in the shipping box could easily be moved to help activate new locations when needed.

“It was time for us to try to go and pop-up somewhere else,” said Chelsea Ridley, a cofounder of the Lawndale Pop-Up Spot and project director for Open Books. “So this is really exciting for us to really test on our model to see what we could do, where we can move.”

The mini-museum is reopening its “Lawndale: A Living History” exhibit at the new location April 10. The exhibit will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays through May 10. It is a por-

trait series and storytelling project that honors the wisdom of elders who have lived in North Lawndale for decades.

A monthlong spring exhibit on mobility justice will explore how transportation and cycling intersects with racial equity, said co-founder Jonathan Kelley.

In the summer, the Lawndale Pop-Up Spot will host a wellness exhibition series of events focused on healthy living.

“We’ll have different wellness type events where we’ll have social workers, mental health professionals come and talk. We’ll have trauma therapists, we’ll have yoga, we’ll have nutrition workshops,” Ridley said.

Another shipping box will be a flower shop selling fresh-cut bouquets run

by Leon’s social enterprise, Homan Grown. Flowers will be grown at a flower farm next to the plaza, and at Homan Grown’s nursery at 3844 W. 16th St. A third shipping box will be customized into a small coffee shop with an outdoor seating area on the plaza.

“There’s something about having something warm in your hand, walking down the street. It has you feel like part of something. Like you’re cared for,” Leon said.

The plaza is along the Douglas Boulevard greenway at a walkable location just blocks from several schools, including Herzl School of Excellence and Lawndale Community Academy, and prominent churches like St. Agatha’s Parish and Stone Temple. The outdoor café will give students, parishioners and local families an easily walkable “place to be, a reason to stay, a reason to patronize and hang out,” Ridley said.

The group is actively seeking a local entrepreneur or a coffee roaster of color to join the plaza as a partner to run the café.

Organizers expect for the plaza to be completed by summer.

“Part of what Love Blooms Here is, is that our community is cared for. They feel like they matter. It matters that we have a museum that talks about them. It matters that we can grow flowers by the community for the community. It matters that they can come and get their own cup of coffee in their own neighborhood.”

Loretto scrutiny intensifies with more resignation calls, audit Activists call for Miller to resign, Taliaferro says city is undertaking Audit of Loretto’s vaccination practices

A group of anti-violence activists rallied in front of Loretto Hospital, 645 S. Central Ave. on April 1 to demand a federal investigation and a forensic audit of the hospital’s vaccination practices. Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) said last week that the city is already doing the latter.

“Loretto will be required to put measures in place to ensure that it is following the city guidelines,” Taliaferro said, adding that the city has not given him any indication about when the audit might be completed.

“Ain’t no looking the other way! The people of Austin deserve the truth,” said Andre Smith, CEO of Chicago Against Violence, on April 1.

“The people of Austin deserve the truth. They deserve the vaccine.”

The Austin safety net hospital has been embroiled in scandal after Block Club Chicago reported that its leadership, particularly former COO Anosh Ahmed and current CEO George Miller, improperly vaccinated people who were not eligible. Block Club reported that Ahmed improperly vaccinated Trump Tower hotel workers while Miller improperly vaccinated members of his suburban church.

“The people in Austin should be the priority in the Austin community,” said activist Tio Hardiman, the president of Violence Interrupters.

“I lived in Austin for 20 years and I respect Loretto Hospital, but I do not respect the fact that they did not service the people the way they should have,” he said. “Vaccinating people at Trump tower makes no sense. It’s a ludicrous decision.”

Ahmed resigned last month while Miller has apologized in a Facebook post and was placed on a two-week suspension. The hospital is currently conducting an internal investigation, but the Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who tapped the hospital to start administering the first COVID-19 vaccinations late last year, has cut the hospital’s vaccination supply.

State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford (8th) resigned his seat on Loretto’s board on March 23, citing his dissatisfaction with how his board colleagues handled the disciplinary process of the hospital’s administrators.

“We are outraged as a community at the politics of pandemic,” he said. “The politics of the pandemic have once again treated Black and Brown people like second-class citizens.”

The activists’ press conference is just the latest demonstration of dissatisfaction among West Side stakeholders. On March 24, Mary Gardner and Women of the 7th Congressional District started a Change.org petition that called for Miller’s removal as president and CEO. After the press conference, Russell said he and his fellow activists believe that vaccine favoritism was widespread and that the revelations about Loretto are only “the tip of the iceberg,” which is why the group is calling for a federal investigation and forensic audit.

“We feel that there needs to be a thorough investigation and an independent investigation,” he said. “We want Miller to step down, because it happened on his watch.”

Russell also said that Ford shouldn’t have resigned, since he would have done better addressing the problem as a board member.

“We want him to take a stand and do his part to clean up this mess,” Russell said.

Taliaferro said last week that George Miller and Anosh Ahmed’s conduct “was very egregious and served to cause the divisions between Austin and Loretto.”

“Loretto has to work very hard to regain trust with the community,” he said, adding that he supports Miller’s suspension and the calls for Miller’s resignation.

However, the alderman drew a line between the executives’ conduct and Loretto as a whole, saying that he supports the hospital. Loretto, he said, has done great work before and during the pandemic, and it provided hundreds of jobs in the community.

“I believe it’s important for us not to allow the conduct of two of its members to overshadow its good work,” he said. “I would encourage Loretto to do whatever it needs to remain a viable and trustworthy hospital in the Austin community.”

Workers speak out from page 1 you to deliver. It starts off at 20 an hour and then goes up to 25 an hour and now it’s at 30 an hour. Those are impossible numbers.”

The driver, who said they’ve been working out of the Cicero warehouse for less than a year, complained of having to urinate in bottles on shifts where they’re afraid to take even a 15-minute break.

“You can’t even really use the bathroom like a normal person, because they’re monitoring everything and they see if you go off route,” they said. “We’re supposed to get two 15-minute breaks, but people don’t take them. That’s why you hear about Amazon drivers peeing and even pooping in bottles and bags. And with COVID, it’s worse — you can’t find a safe restroom.”

The worker said the $15 an hour that they make is actually a subterfuge, because the pay isn’t equivalent to if they were working for Amazon directly.

“None of us drivers are technically Amazon employees,” they said. “We drive Amazon vans and wear Amazon uniforms, but these are contract companies.”

The worker was referencing Amazon’s Delivery Service Partner (DSP) program, which allows people with at least $10,000 in startup capital to start building their own fleet of Amazon delivery vehicles, somewhat similar to a restaurant franchise.

But the ownership is only a mirage, the driver said.

“Amazon sets them up, but it’s a big lie. Amazon controls everything,” the driver said. “They even route us from Seat-

tle, which is a mess. And now, Amazon is installing surveillance cameras. For who? For Amazon. Our so-called bosses [the DSP owners] are like overseers on a plantation. Everyone knows Amazon is the slave owner.”

The driver complained that $15 or $16 hourly wage doesn’t reflect a true minimum wage, because of what the driver called “the bait-and-switch.”

“They recruit by promising us 40 hours a week, then they cut our hours,” the driver said. “They say they’ll give us bonuses if we do extra work, but the bonuses are just what they promised to pay in the first place! So, they’re squeezing more work out of us for the hours they promised in the first place.”

When reached for comment on Friday morning, an Amazon media relations representative touted the company’s $15 starting wage, which is more than Illinois’ $11 minimum wage.

“We also offer full-time employees comprehensive benefits including full medical, vision, and dental insurance as well as a 401(k) with 50 percent match starting on day one,” the spokesperson said in an email.

“Amazon prioritizes the safety and health of its employees and has invested millions of dollars to provide a safe workplace,” the Amazon representative added. “The com-

The spokesperson also said that Amazon “committed $11.5 billion in 2020 on COVID-related initiatives to help keep our employees safe and to get items to customs” and that the company encourages “associates to bring their comments, questions, and concerns directly to their management team with the goal of quickly improving the work environment and challenging leadership assumptions.”

In the past, the company has also strongly refuted claims about workers relieving themselves while on the clock.

In May, in response to claims of drivers relieving themselves in bottles and bags, Amazon News stated on Twitter, “You don’t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? If that were true nobody would work for us.

The truth is that we have over a million incredible employees around the world who are proud of what they do, and have great wages and health care from day one.”

But the company’s refutation prompted an almost instant reaction on social media, with workers releasing photos of pee bottles that were then published on social media. In addition, The Intercept has published internal documents revealing that Amazon knew that workers were relieving themselves while on the job.

During the phone interview on Thursday, the Amazon driver said that workers do not feel that they can complain to Amazon about their conditions without fear of retaliation, a claim that activists pressed at Wednesday’s press conference.

“We are all here on one accord,” Austin resident Edie Jacobs said into a bullhorn outside of the Cicero warehouse on Wednesday. “We want jobs, we want justice.”

Dan Giloth, an organizer with Black Workers Matter, said that the group will be doing the rallies “for a long time” until they see improvements in the working conditions among essential workers.

The anonymous driver said they hope Black Workers Matter can help the many drivers and

warehouse workers who are dissatisfied with their conditions fight back and possibly even unionize like the Amazon workers in Bessemer, Ala. are trying to do.

The workers held a vote on whether or not to unionize on Monday, but the results of the voting were not known as of April 2.

“A lot of us want to organize, but we don’t know how to go about doing that,” the driver said. “If you even ask questions, they’ll cut your days or the [DSP owners] will blame stuff on Amazon.

“We need the site to be unionized. We need to be at the collective bargaining table and we need to increase the pay,” they added. “Personally, I think the pay should start at $20 an hour or more.”

Here, patients have direct access to the first doses of medicine for the recovery of substance use. After treatment is established, patients may continue their treatment and care at another PCC health center.

Patients at the Chemical Dependency Clinic will have a peer support specialist with lived experience to help them manage their recovery and appointments.
