Mayor Lori Lightfoot launched her reelection bid June 8 — and it included a campaign stop surrounded by West Side allies and alderpeople who have supported her within City Council.

At the forefront of Lightfoot’s campaign is her strategy of investing public dollars in and guiding private funding toward struggling neighborhoods that have not historically gotten much attention from City Hall. Lightfoot’s signature Invest South/West initiative has funneled millions into large developments on the West Side, including the Grace Manor affordable housing project and the Lawndale Innovation Center in North Lawndale and the Laramie State Bank redevelopment in Austin.

Last month, in anticipation of Juneteenth and Father’s Day, a small group of

men from around the west suburbs and Chicago’s West Side gathered inside of an Austin barbershop to talk about a subject they know best – Black fatherhood.

In Austin, summer peace-building initiatives heating up The 100 Blocks/100 Churches campaign to return to Austin this summer, among other measures

The 100 Blocks/100 Churches campaign will return to Austin this summer, Pastor Jody Bady of Jehovah Jireh Outreach Ministry announced at the 15th Police District’s monthly of faith-based leaders.

On Wednesday nights, residents, police officers and several congregations will again be taking to the streets to unite for peace.

West Siders have been participating in this annual event for more than 10 years.

Sgt. Edgar Brown of the 15th District said the focus will be on “hot spots,” as he encouraged faith leaders and block club leaders to contact the CAPS office if they identified areas that would benefit from

the campaign.

“We want everybody to feel seen,” he said. “We have to bring the energy back that Austin always had.”

Block clubs and faith leaders interested in participating in the 100 Blocks/100 Churches campaign for the first time can receive guidance and join this community effort to reduce violence, said pastor Dorin “Mac” McIntyre of Mount Olivet Missionary Baptist Church.

Also at last week’s faith-based meeting, Sgt. Jermaine Harris, leader of community policing programs in CPD’s Area Four, announced this year’s Block Club Conventions Series. These events support the work of block clubs who work together with residents to improve the areas where they live and recognizes their role in keeping communities safe.

“Pretty much you’re taking a block club party atmosphere and adding job fairs, adding resources, adding activities for youth to activate a space that traditionally doesn’t get that love or that attention,” Harris said.

The series will connect local organizations with residents on their blocks so they can learn about job opportunities, local activities and public programs available to them in four blocks on the West Side. Harris said local organizations can “show up and claim a spot out on street” during the events or contact him in advance to participate.

Austin’s Block Club Convention will take place June 25 in partnership with the 300 North Lotus block club. If the program is successful, it will continue across the West Side throughout the summer, Harris said.

Youth activities are also planned for the summer, including the “15th District Station Exploration” program where groups of young people can visit the police station for a tour.

Officer William Martinez, youth liaison, said the program is an effort to “get rid of the stigma that if you walk into to the police station, you’re in trouble,” and the aim is for it to foster positive relationships between police officers and community members.

A youth summit and festival, organized by the 15th District, YourPassion1st and My Chi, My Future, will take place at Columbus Park on Aug. 12 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Local youth organizations who want to engage with youth can register to participate in the event.

In addition, the 15th District plans to host a 24-hour camping day at Columbus Park in August, before young people and

children return to school. The date for the camping trip will be announced soon.

Martinez also shared that the 15th District has five part-time summer jobs available for young people ages 16 to 24 to produce a podcast that will focus on “spreading the word” about events happening in Austin among other young people.

He said the 15th District also seeks volunteers to set up a youth swimming program at Austin Town Hall Park.

In other news, Pastor Steve Epting of Hope Community Church invited churches to join as ambassadors to launch two community-based health campaigns. Rush University Medical Center is looking to partner with local churches to host high-blood pressure detection campaigns at the church and connect residents with community health workers.

Hope Community Church also is partnering with Rush University Medical Center for a breast health awareness campaign that will bring breast health ambassadors to local churches to offer women free or low-cost screenings and quality navigation assistance. Churches interested in participating may contact LaTrice Perry Hampton at Hope Community Church.

Austin Harvest, a fresh food market run by students from By The Hand Club’s after school program, received a $250,000 Chicago Recovery Plan Community Development Grant last month.

Between this and By The Hand’s fundraising, the nonprofit now has enough money to build something it has long sought — a permanent physical space that will allow them to keep the market open year-round instead of just during the warmer months.

Since it launched in the summer of 2020, the market has been using the lot at 423 N. Laramie Ave. The new 2,500-square-foot indoor market is being built at the same location, with the goal of finishing up construction in time for the winter holiday season.

Since launching in 2001, the By the Hand Club for Kids after school program has expanded its presence throughout Chicago, with the Austin campus near the Laramie/ Lake Green Line ‘L’ station growing to several buildings.

The concept for the market emerged in the wake of civil unrest that followed the police killing of George Floyd. The rioting led to the few grocery stores in Austin having to close for over a week. The pandemic also saw food pantries struggling to feed the sudden spike in demand, exacerbating existing inequities.

When By the Hand asked the students what their concerns were, food insecurity emerged as a major theme. The idea of turning a looted liquor store into a grocery store morphed into an outdoor market that would give way to a physical market once they had enough money to build one.

Andraya Yousfi, By the Hand’s director of partnerships and development, said that Austin Harvest has been getting produce from Jewel Osco.

“They approached us last year,” she said.

“Jewel sells to us at wholesale cost and we sell it back to the community at the wholesale cost, and provide free delivery.”

Yousfi added that they keep the more expensive products such as blueberries affordable to the community, using fundraising dollars to subsidize the cost.

She explained that the purpose of the market is to provide fresh fruits and vegetables in a food desert and to provide hands-on training for the students in their program. Fifteen Austin students from the 8th through 12th grades take part in the program for 12-week stretches, learning skills such as customer service, banking, money management and budgeting. The students also get a stipend.

Yousfi said that the indoor space will allow Austin Harvest to operate year-road, expand their storage and refrigerate perishables on site. Austin Harvest already works with the Austin Eats initiative to donate food to organizations that need it.

“We’ve been doing that before, but we’ll be able to do it more efficiently [once the building is constructed],” Yousfi said.

Austin Harvest was able to raise $650,000, and the city grant is enough to cover the remaining costs. The project officially broke ground in May. Yousfi said that they were proud to have Structure Re-Right Inc., “a certified woman- and minority-owned general

contractor with deep roots on Chicago’s West Side” as the project’s general contractor. She said, even if there are supply chain issues, they are reasonably confident that they will complete the project on time.

As the construction starts, students will hold several pop-up markets throughout the city and train for managing the indoor market.

“We’re really ramping up training and getting our students ready to run the indoor store as opposed to an outdoor store,” Yousfi said. “We’d be able to have 100 to 200 customers, and no rain, no Chicago weather will stop us. That’s what we’re excited about.”

In a statement to the media, Austin Harvest founding member Azariah Baker, who is currently a senior at East Garfield Park’s Westinghouse College Prep, 3223 W. Franklin Blvd., said that she was impressed with how important the market has become to the community.

“We knew that we could make a difference through Austin Harvest, but we’re truly overwhelmed by the impact it has had in our community,” she said. “The best part is knowing that we’ve laid the groundwork for our friends and classmates to serve the Austin neighborhood for years to come.”

Chicago hospital workers demand safety regulations Short staffing at Loretto, other area medical centers has diminished the quality of patient care and posed occupational risks to workers, union says

Hospital workers are calling on federal and state regulators to step in to protect employees and patients from issues caused by short-staffing at Loretto Hospital, Northwestern Memorial and other Chicago area medical centers.

Members of SEIU Healthcare Illinois rallied at the headquarters of the Joint Commission for Accreditation for Hospital Organizations to demand that the regulatory nonprofit evaluate staffing levels in its accreditation process.

Though the issue has been worsened by the pandemic, staff shortages have been a longstanding problem at hospitals that have strained workers and lowered the quality of care for patients, workers said. When hospitals are understaffed, “patients are more likely to suffer from certain outcomes including hospital-acquired infections,” said Greg Kelley, president of SEIU Healthcare Illinois.

“They do not consider the serious consequences of short-staffing in their evaluation criteria,” Kelley said. “By failing to recognize this problem… they are risking lives.”

“I can do my best at my job, but I cannot do the jobs of three, four or five people,” Craig said.

Each day there are several patients in the emergency room waiting hours to be admitted because there isn’t enough staff to prepare the hospital rooms quickly enough, Craig said.

“That’s an awful feeling knowing a person is sitting in pain. They’re waiting for me to do my job. But I can only do so much as one person,” Craig said.

the issue impacts all hospitals. Loretto is “always short on funding because we’re a safety-net hospital,” but even well-funded university medical centers struggle with staff shortages, Craig said.

Staff shortages at Northwestern caused patient care technician Yolanda Stewart to

be injured and unable to work for months, she said. A bedridden patient was in “extreme discomfort” and needed to be lifted and turned, but there were no other employees available to assist Stewart, she said.

“Because we were so short-staffed, I ended up having to do it all by myself. I ended up injuring my back,” Stewart said.

The pandemic has “brought critical attention to the need for more trained healthcare workers to meet patient demand and to reduce turnover,” said Joint Comission President Dr. Jonathan B. Perlin in a statement. The organization acknowledged staffing levels are an important factor in quality of care and patient outcomes, but did not commit to evaluating staffing levels as part of its accreditation process.

“Staffing is a critical and complex issue that The Joint Commission takes very seriously. There is not a one-size-fits-all or immediate solution, especially in the context of ensuring access to patients in need with an ongoing workforce shortage,” Perlin said.

At least two major Juneteenth celebrations will take place on the West Side this weekend.

The Columbus Park Advisory Council will host the 2022 Juneteenth West Fest on Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19, Fromm noon to 8 p.m. both days, at Columbus Park, 500 S. Central Ave. in Austin.

The Advisory Council will be joined by a range of other hosting organizations, including the Westside Arts Council, the Westside Business Development Corporation, the Chi-

cago Westside Branch NAACP and Introspect Youth Services, Inc., among other legacy organizations.

Organizers said this year’s Juneteenth West Fest will feature more than 16 hours of live entertainment and family-oriented fun.

here are nine categories of speech that are not protected by the First Amendment: Obscenity; Fighting words; Defamation (including libel and slander); Child pornography; Perjury; Blackmail; Incitement to imminent lawless action; True threats; and Solicitations to commit crimes.

After watching comedian Monique’s 10-minute-plus tirade against fellow comedian DL Hughley, over who should have been the headliner for a comic show, and where the n-word was spewed freely and continuously, I think it is time for our lawmakers to federally ban that word. No longer could it be used in any public forum, over the public airwaves, or as part of any comedy routines and musical lyrics. If there was a true need for it to be used as part of anything that would be a public performance, permission would have to be granted. Our lawmakers could literally

Time to ban the n-word pick any of the nine categories to place that word into and it would fit. And unless there was a re-enactment of something from the enslavement period of Black people, most folks could find a different word to use.

The n-word is a racial slur.

There have been a number of non-Black people who have felt the wrath of the accusation of using it, which brought about their downfall. Just ask Paula Deen. However, Black people feel they can go about spewing that word with impunity.

I cringed when I heard Monique using it as she went on and on and on. I didn’t feel any love coming from her as she used it.

I felt the same kind of racial hatred that my ancestors felt when the overseer used it against them as they beat them into

submission.

So it is time we stopped listening to certain Black folks attempting to defend the only thing that came out of slavery that some of us love completely and refuse to let go. I hated seeing Dave Chappelle use it in his monologue before a predominantly white audience. There’s no way the average non-Black person in that room could begin to understand all the intricacies of his meanings when he used that label. But they laughed and I shook my head.

It is time our Congress put forth a total ban on that word. I would like to see a 100% airwave ban for the word. No more airing it over the radio, or over the television, or even the ability to upload videos to social media sites to be seen by

another person. Comedians would no longer be free to use that word as part of their comedy routine without being hit with a significant fine and censure. The same with programs produced for television and the movies. No more just dropping the word out of thin air. There are a plethora of nouns that could be used in its stead that would be more accurate.

Is there a person in Congress brave enough and willing to put forth this kind of legislation as we approach the first federal Juneteenth holiday? Even more interesting would be seeing which Black people would argue against the banning of the word.

We cannot continue on into the 21st century with our children being subjected to that word all over the place. There’s an old saying that if they knew better they could do better. Maybe a federal ban will help those who know better to do better.

Taste of Chicago brings Austin together

The annual foodie event kicked off inside of Mt. Olive Baptist Church’s parking lot on June 10

Austin residents and visitors from across Chicago and beyond filled the Mt. Olive Baptist Church parking lot, 5720 W. Chicago Ave. on the afternoon of June 10, as the 2022 Taste of Chicago kicked off with the Austin neighborhood event.

This year, the annual Taste of Chicago launches with three neighborhood pop-up events. Similar neighborhood events will take place in Pullman and Little Village over the next two Saturdays, with the traditional Grant Park festival taking place July 8 through July 10.

The Taste of Chicago in Austin featured food from catering companies and eateries from across the city. It also included performances by the Chicago Blues Festival regulars under the Chicago Soul City Blues banner.

The vendors ended up doing brisk business and the organizers were impressed with how many people attended. The attendees said

they enjoyed the food and the music, as well as the diversity in the crowd. Austin residents said they appreciated having a safe place to gather and have a good time.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Taste of Chicago was cancelled in 2020. The 2021 Taste was a series of neighborhood pop-up events.

This year’s Taste is something of a mixture of last year’s iteration and the more traditional version.

In a statement to the media, Erin Harkey, the commissioner of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), which runs the festival, framed this year’s format as a way to “showcase the food and music of Pullman, Austin and Little Village this summer.”

“After an all-virtual Taste in 2020 and community pop-ups in 2021, we are thrilled to bring Taste back to Grant Park and back into our neighborhoods in 2022,” she said.

The majority of the food vendors at the Austin event were catering companies. In keeping with the Taste tradition, they offered smaller “taste” samples, as well as fullfledged menu items. Cooking from the Soul Catering is based in East Garfield Park’s The Hatchery food incubator, 135 N. Kedzie Ave., offered a jerk chicken and fries plate, as well as seafood macaroni, chicken Alfredo pizza, jerk chicken tacos and a watermelon blast drink. For the first half of the festival, it had by far the longest line and it ran out of half

The only vendor with a clear Austin connection was Schweet Foods, 5248 W. Chicago Ave., which sells homemade cheesecakes.

During the Taste, it sold MooMoo cheesecakes and $3 lemonade.

“It’s been pretty good so far,” said owner Chamille Weddington in the brief pause before another rush of customers came in. “It’s been going very nicely.”

Other caterers represented included Sole Ingredient Catering, based in Chatham, and Catered by Kish and Doom Street Eats, whose physical locations in Chicago are unclear.

Cynthia’s Gumbo Express, which is based inside of the Near West Side’s Kitchen Chicago shared-use kitchen at 324 N. Leavitt Ave., had a food truck parked at the Taste. Mr. Quiles Mexican Food, Ms. Tittle’s Cupcakes and Whadda Jerk food trucks were represented as well.

Restaurants represented included Chatham’s iconic Josephine’s Southern Cooking and West Elston’s Razpachos Mexican-style dessert shop. Oak Park’s Robinson’s No. 1 Ribs had a food truck out, but it left by 3 p.m.

When Austin Weekly News caught up with Taliaferro a few minutes later, he said that he tried food from three vendors and “it’s been great” and that he believes that “the blues music really brings the family together and the food brings it all together.”

Sheila Tillman, a member of Mt. Olive’s choir, said that she didn’t expect so many people to attend.

“It’s great to see people in Austin come together and be with each other,” she added. “I think it’s wonderful.”

“I think the music has been really great and it’s really nice to have the community space in Austin,” said Christian Snow, of Austin. “I think [the food] is pretty good. I think it gives the community members, people in Austin, [a chance] just to get together and hang out. It’s a good vibe, for those who live in Austin.”

single father of a young son. Polk said he wanted to create a safe space, where Black fathers can come together to speak candidly and transparently about the joys and challenges of fatherhood.

“I’m 72, so I come from a different generation of fathers,” said Freddie Addison, of Little Village. “I’m glad to be able to do something like this.”

Addison, the elder of the group, said he was in his 40s, when his father’s words about family started to make sense to him.

“It was an awakening I had that a lot of dads probably have later in life,” he said, adding that his perspective about his father, who worked a range of jobs, evolved over time.

“My father wore so many hats and had so many responsibilities,” Addison recalled.

“It took me a long time to realize just how powerful his position was in our family to provide for all of us.”

Damon McGhee, of Maywood, shared

one of the most powerful memories he has about his father. They had taken a trip to Israel after McGhee graduated high school.

“That was the first time I can remember really being alone with him and having deep conversations,” he said. “It was a great experience but also a source of frustration; like, why haven’t we done this before?”

McGhee said that memory has become both a treasure and an inspiration for how he handles his relationships with his own children. He said he makes a conscious effort to be routinely present in their lives.

Daryl Richardson, of Hillside, said that, while having a certain level of transparency between children and parents is something he didn’t grow up with, he hopes that it empowers his daughters.

“Back in my day, the [popular] expression was, ‘Children are to be seen and not heard.’ But I think that when those [unheard] children become adults, they don’t know how to express themselves,” Richardson said. “I wanted my daughters to be able to express themselves.”

Richardson said that while some people may think he’s too friendly or too familiar with his daughters, he’s glad that he chose

“One of my daughters is a psychology major and she has no problem asking me how my therapy session went. She wants to ‘unpack’ things with me,” Richardson said, laughing.

In addition to maintaining healthy relationships with their children, the fathers agreed that they also want their children to grow up in safer and more uplifting environments than they did.

“I grew up on the West Side and we [he and his family] live here too,” said Polk.

“It’s better than what it was, but I want my kids to not be afraid. [I want them to be] aware of their surroundings, but not afraid or ashamed.”

Addison said that he’s seen the West Side change over time, although many things are the same.

“Some of the communities still look the way they looked when I was coming up,” he said. “The main thing I notice though is we had a strong sense of community [as far as knowing your neighbors and helping each other out]. That is what FREDDIE ADDISON seems to be gone Father now.”

Paul Bradley, of Oak Park, said that, while his kids are not growing up in the community he grew up in, he makes sure that they spend time with family on the West Side.

“Sometimes, my wife and I worry, but we know they’re safe with family,” Bradley said. “It’s important for them to see the different neighborhoods and get to know their family who lives [across Austin Boulevard] on the West Side.”

McGhee said he wants his children to know the neighborhood he grew up in and to share some of the same struggles he experienced growing up.

“I remember telling my son about the distance I’d have to walk to school,” McGhee said. “One day, I took him and we walked the exact route I used to take to school and the time it took to do it. Now, he sees how much easier he has it [than I did].”

“It’s a battle y’all.

It can be scary, but this was nice.”

Bradley said that, while his father had a “tough-love” approach with him growing up, he can appreciate the softness his dad now has as a grandfather.

“He used to call me soft, but now he’s the one soft with the grandkids,” Bradley said, laughing. “He’s always telling them he loves them and reminding me to show my love. He’s always telling me to be gentle.”

As the men wrapped up the conversation, they agreed that more talks like this need to happen to give Black men a space to share their truths, wisdom and insights.

“Thank you, Jeremy, for having the forethought to do this to raise our consciousness,” said Addison. “It’s a battle y’all. It can be scary, but this was nice.”

he R3 Westside Collaborative Project is a coalition of the following westside communitybased organizations working in partnership with the Chicago Westside Branch NAACP: Bright Leadership Institute, Chicago Fathers for Change, Habilitative Systems, Inc., Jehovah Jireh 1 Ministry, National Alliance for the Empowerment of the Formerly Incarcerated (NAEFI), Saving Our Sons Ministries, and Violence Interrupters NFP. The core collaboration consists of agencies who are committed to improving the future of westside youth with complimentary and coordinated programs such as academic enrichment, sports and recreation, mental health awareness, mentoring,

job training and placement, life skills training, and conflict resolution. The high impact services we provide allow youth to engage in activities that positively improve their quality of life and impact the sustainability of their communities.

Additionally, they are learning the value of civic engagement, economic

literacy, and social capital to benefit and advance causes important to them.

It takes a team of dedicated citizens and practitioners to listen to our youth and to empower them to stay on the right track. R3 has given us the means by strengthening our capacity and enabling us to achieve our goals to make positive impact on the westside of Chicago.

Saving Our Sons Ministries

WHO WE ARE Bright Leadership Institute (BLI) is 501c-3 nonprofit organization serving the needs of the community for more than 20 years. BLI’s holistic approach addresses the needs of the entire community, which is critical to ensuring all members of our village continue to thrive. BLI provides mentoring, enrichment, entrepreneurship, workforce development, leadership training and community engagement to create a level playing field for at risk youth ages 12-24 years old in our community.

WHO WE SERVE IN R3 BLI’s R3 programs serve youth between the ages of 12 and 24 years old who are economically disadvantaged and at risk, low income, in and out of school, unemployed, attending alternative schools, underserved Communities.

WHAT TYPES OF PROGRAMS OFFERED Entrepreneurship and Career Connection, Mentoring and Enrichment and Workforce Development.

WHO WE ARE Saving Our Sons (SOS) is comprised of likeminded people from the East/West Garfield community who have been diligently working within and often beyond our community to quell the violence and bring fiscal opportunities here to the community.

WHO WE SERVE IN R3 Our target group includes the formerly incarcerated and other underserved residents.

WHAT TYPES OF PROGRAMS OFFERED SOS offers five diverse programs whose goal is to bring violence and poverty that plagues our community to its end. One program which we are proud of is our construction component. We recruit and pay formerly incarcerated individuals to learn the trades of drywalling and painting. (They attend training 3 days weekly for 4 hours and receive a $15 per hour stipend. Once done training we place them on a construction site to earn $35-$40 pay). The other programs are Real 2 Reel, Fitness Training, Outreach Work and Health & Wellness.

WHO WE SERVE IN R3 We target at-risk teens and young adults, ages 10 to 21, but also provide services for Austin residents in need, outside that age range.

WHAT TYPES OF PROGRAMS OFFERED We provide around the clock support services acting as first responders to all acts of violence and all forms social and mental unrest. We provide mentorship, a listening ear, and a shoulder to cry on as needed by our clientele. We seek to provide alternatives to conflicts that often result in death and community harm. We maintain a food pantry, conduct workshops, hold community events, and provide peace circles for partner organizations through street patrols and corner-to-corner community engagement.

National Alliance for the Empowerment of the Formerly Incarcerated WHO WE ARE National Alliance and the Empowerment of the Formerly Incarcerated (NAEFI) provides Reentry Youth and Reentry Adult Accountability Coaches (Credible Messengers) who can help identify youth and adults in need of our communitybased Reentry Programs and Educational Opportunities. Our restorative centered mentoring design focuses on real life issues encountered by reentry youth/adults,

and youth living in the community. This R3 Reentry Program is designed to help restore heritage and value to the formerly incarcerated. We support all interested participants: including young people suffering from trauma, and/or living in impoverished gun violent communities of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

WHO WE SERVE IN R3 We serve youth in the community (ages 1218), reentry youth (ages 16-24), and reentry adults (18 and older)problem-solving, health/ recreation and civic engagement.

WHAT TYPES OF PROGRAMS OFFERED NAEFI’s R3 Reentry Program offers peer mentoring support with a recidivismprevention agenda centered around decreasing racial, social, and economic disparities. The goal of our R3 Reentry model is to offer habilitation, and accountability to all participants, while opening doors of opportunity. Violence Interrupters, Inc. WHO WE ARE Violence Interrupters, NFP (VI) is à Public Health Model aimed at changing mindsets and behaviors associated with gun violence.

Gun violence should be treated as a epidemic because gun violence spreads from one person to another.

CHICAGO WESTSIDE BRANCH NAACP 55 years of Fighting Forward for Justice The CWB NAACP actively works toward the improvement of social, economic, and political conditions of African Americans and others throughout the community and neighborhoods on the westside of Chicago and beyond. Our collective and collaborative work with community stakeholders in the areas of civil rights and voting rights, criminal justice, violence prevention, housing, economic development, environment justice, workforce development, health care, education, etc. continues to build momentum and make meaningful impact because of our supporters.
