City builds economic case for police training center City contracts, tax breaks, small business boost among proposed benefits, officials say By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter

For the past few months, Ald. Emma Mitts (37th) and other West Side aldermen have mentioned that the new emergency services training center the city is looking to build in West Garfield Park would bring economic benefits. But it wasn’t until Mitts’ June 28 community meeting that West Siders got a chance to listen to what those benefits might look like. At the meeting, held at Healing Temple Church, 4941 W. Chicago Ave., city officials explained that they were planning to encourage business development around the training center through various financial incentives. Mitts and other West Side aldermen added that they would make sure minority contractors, especially ones from the West Side, will be involved in the building’s See TRAINING ACADEMY on page 6

Joined by community leaders, other elected officials, childcare advocates and medical professionals, Congressman Danny Davis (7th) called for a stop to President Donald Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy of

separating migrant children from parents coming to America. The June 25 press conference, held at Loretto Hospital, took place less than a week after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on June 20 allowing children to remain with their families while their guardians are prosecuted for illegal entry.

During the press conference, Davis and other local lawmakers, including state Rep. Camille Lilly (78th), Ald. Emma Mitts (37th) and Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer (2nd), addressed the threats to children who have already been separated and
