Douglass High principal fired without explanation Troy LaRaviere says Vanessa Dereef’s termination is part of troubling pattern By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
Vanessa Dereef, who’s been a major force behind the ongoing efforts to improve Douglass Academy High School, has been fired as its principal effective July 7. While the Chicago Public Schools district confirmed the firing, it did not give any reason as to why, simply indicating that Dr. Abdul Muhammad, formerly a principal at Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School, will be taking over as interim principal. Troy LaRaviere, president of the the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association, said that he saw the firing as part of a pattern of CPS terminating black principals for seemingly no apparent reason. His organization is currently working on a more in-depth study to see just how far the pattern goes. Dereef has been a major advocate for the ongoing efforts to convert Douglass High School into a performing arts focused school. She has also been working to build on the programs that already exist. On April 20, she talked to the FBI about enhancing the school’s forensics class. At the time, she said that the discussion went well. Dereef also launched music and theater classes in partnership with the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forest, as well as local theaters in the Austin area. She had been trying to reach out to North Lawndale-based Cinespace Chicago Film Studios for possible collaborations. See DOUGLASS on page 1

Late Robert Steele’s replacement named Dennis Deer, a North Lawndale business owner, will be the next 2nd District county commissioner By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
West Side business owner Dr. Dennis Deer was unanimously selected by a committee of aldermen and Democratic Party leaders to replace the late 2nd District Commissioner Robert Steele, who died on June 19.
According to the Cook County Code of Ordinances, the Democratic committeemen for the wards that are in the 2nd district were responsible for choosing Steele’s replacement. The committee members said that Deere’s selection came after a series of close votes. There were 11 candidates who applied
and interviewed for the position, but Deer had the backing of Bobbie Steele, Robert Steele’s mother — a former 2nd District commissioner and Cook County Board President — and Ald. Michael Scott (24th), who chaired the appointment committee. Both officials lauded Deer’s community advocacy, as well as his political work. Deer will serve out the remainder of Steele’s term, which will end in spring

Austin businesses awarded Thrive Zone grants 29th Ward businesses were given a total of $558,000 in grants By AustinTalks Partner
Seven Austin businesses have been awarded grants under a new city program designed to help businesses on the West and South sides. In all, 51 businesses citywide are receiving $5 million in Retail Thrive Zone business improvement grants. The grants, worth up to $250,000 each, can be used to improve commercial buildings with new roofs, facades, plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling systems. Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29) congratulated grant recipients in a recent Facebook post: “The 29th Ward’s businesses were blessed with receiving over $558,000 in grant money to help build a better Chicago Avenue (Soul City Corridor). “Thanks to Malcolm Crawford, Charmaine
Rickettes and AAABNA for all of your hard work in partnering with the Department of Planning and Development in rolling out this effort,” the alderman wrote. The new city program, funded with money from Tax Increment Financing districts, is targeting commercial corridors in Austin and several other neighborhoods, including Back of the Yards, Bronzeville and Englewood, according to DNAinfo Chicago. Here are the Austin businesses receiving the first round of grants: Bitoy’s Sweet Treats (5957 W. Chicago Ave.) for construction of an outdoor seating area for the neighborhood sweets shops. Ministers prepare to march on Washington
Rev. Al Sharpton convened a July 13 press conference on the West Side to announce the march By WENDELL HUTSON Contributing Reporter
Rev. Al Sharpton was at New Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Baptist Church, 4301 W. Washington Blvd. in West Garfield Park, on July 13 to announce that he plans on joining a coalition of black clergy in a march for justice in Washington, D.C. The event is scheduled to take place on the 54th anniversary of Dr. Martin L. King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The New York-based pastor was joined by 20 ministers and community leaders during the press conference. Sharpton said that 1,000 ministers would lead the Aug. 28 march from the Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Monument in Washington to the U. S. Department of Justice. “The people [elected officials] in Washington are ‘dream-busters.’ The dream Dr. King had for us as a nation and as a race of people is being torn apart by those who do not want us to reach our goals,” contends Sharpton. “People are dying on streets all over the country and especially here in Chicago where over 100 people have been murdered so far this year.” Sharpton said if stricter gun laws were in place, it would reduce illegal gun sales and increase penalties for those shooting people. “People say guns kill people, not people. But you can’t shoot someone without a gun. That’s why we need stricter gun legislation. This march is for gun legislation as we stand together to fight crime in our communities.” Shooting deaths in Chicago and other big cities are common but not at the hands of police officers, said Rev. Ira Acree, pastor of St. John Bible Church in North Lawndale. “We are still reeling in the aftermath of the Laquan McDonald murder cover-up. As a result, we have extra motivation to have a strong presence on the steps of the Justice Department in Washington, D.C. after what happened to this young man,” said Acree. “In Chicago, we have police abuse that goes on. And we have systematic racism as well as a ‘blue’ code of silence when officers do wrong. That’s why we are ready to protest and do whatever it takes to get justice for all.” McDonald, a 17-year-old male, died October 2014 after being shot 16 times by former Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke, now charged with first-degree murder. Four other officers on duty the night McDonald was killed were initially suspended without pay for lying about the incident, but were recently reinstat-
ed to desk duty by the Chicago Police Board. Police Supt. Eddie Johnson recommended termination for the officers but was overruled by the police board. In a statement, Johnson said he stands by his decision to fire the officers. “I have no intention of changing my original recommendation to the Chicago Police Board to terminate the officers; however, the police board leaves me no choice but to reinstate the officers to a paid status,” said Johnson. “(And) while legally the ruling leaves us with no other short term options, the officers’ police powers will remain suspended and they will not return to the street.” Aside from gun violence, Bishop James Dukes, pastor of the Liberation Christian Center on the South Side, said more needs to be done on the federal level to restore the black middle-class. According to Dukes, he recently met with U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), and said he encouraged him to pass legislation that would provide mentorship to black males. “There are poor, black women living in public housing with their children and using Section 8 to secure housing elsewhere

DOUGLASS A pattern? from page 1 Recently, Dereef had been working to attract more students to Douglass. If the number of incoming freshmen dips below 100, the school will close. On April 19, the report card pick-up day, teachers and volunteers went out to several elementary schools, most of which are located outside Austin, setting up informational tables to let students know about Douglass and encourage students to apply. Dereef said that “over 50” students expressed interest. The principal earned support from Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th), whose ward includes Douglass, as well as Ald. Emma Mitts (37th). During his June 7 community meeting at Columbus Park Rectory, 543 N Waller Ave., Taliaferro asked his constituents for ideas on how they could help the school, and reit-

Newly-appointed from page 1 2018. The newly minted commissioner told the reporters that he intended to hit the ground running and reach out to South Side communities where he may not necessarily be as well-known as he is on the West Side. Deer is the head of Deer Rehabilitation Services, a North Lawndale-based therapy services provider. He sits on the boards of the North Lawndale Employment Network and Strategic Human Services. He co-founded the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council and continues to serve on its executive committee. Deer also served as the president of the Friends of Robert Steele fundraising committee. Before that, Deer ran for 24th Ward alderman in 2003 and 24th ward Democratic Committeeman in 2007. He chaired an antiviolence task force created by U.S. Representative Danny Davis (D-7th) and Steele’s 2nd County District Community Advisory Council. Most of the Democratic ward committeemen with the 2nd District double as local aldermen. Their votes were equal to however many voters in their wards voted for Steele. Scott had 8,953 votes — the biggest number of votes in the district — but South Side aldermen had the highest share of the overall vote, collectively holding 50.43 percent of the vote share. The committee met at Lofts on Arthington apartments, 3301 W. Arthington St., on July 13 to interview the candidates and decide which one to pick. While the interviews were open to the public, the executive session, where the decision was made, was not. Candidates weren’t allowed to be present in the room while the interviews were taking place.

It made it tough on the [committeemen] to get the job done.” In a victory speech, Deer said he was grateful to the Steele family and the officials involved, and emphasized that he knew his job wouldn’t be easy. “Know this — I need your prayers, because we have a lot of obstacles and we got a lot of work to do,” he said. Bobbie Steele, who attended the meeting, told the Weekly that she had full confidence in Deer. “Dennis has a proven track record in the community,” she said. “He’s a leader trained under Robert Steele. And, of course, I’ve known him since he was eight years old, and I’ve always known him as someone who helps his people, and helps people, period. That is his legacy and I know he will continue it on a bigger scale.” Deer told reporters that, while he thought Steele’s endorsement helped “tremendously,” he was a strong candidate even without it, citing his work in the community as a major reason for his selection. He said that public health and safety, as well as community development, would be his major priorities. When asked about whether he’s worried about campaigning on the South Side, where he isn’t as well-known, Deer said that many of the issues affecting the West Side affect the South Side as well, and that he was no stranger to that part of the city. Scott told the reporters that Deer would have his support. “We’ll help him,” he said. “I am willing to cajole other committeemen to help him.” CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com

Organization to give away $5K in scholarship money
The West Suburban Community Development Corporation is seeking innovative ideas By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
The West Suburban Community Development Corporation, an organization affiliated with Miracle Revival Cathedral in suburban Maywood, has created a relatively unconventional college scholarship. Applicants will need to be more than good scholars to receive the money — they’ll need to have ideas for changing their communities, said Jay Watts, who wrote the “Make a Change” scholarship. “Applicants simply need to go online, fill out basic information and tell us how they’ve identified a challenge or problem in their community,” she said in a recent phone interview. Applicants will need to create a one- to two-minute video that will be uploaded to the organization’s website. People will have an opportunity to vote on their favorite videos but a committee will select the winner. Watts said that applicants can apply from anywhere in the Chicago area. “Individuals just have to be accepted into
a college or already enrolled in college. They can be in beauty school, a technical school, a junior college or a four-year university,” Watts said. “There is no income or GPA requirement. We just want to highlight people who have potential.” Watts, a real estate professional by trade who was once the board president of a large men’s shelter in Chicago, said she came up with the idea for the scholarship based on her experiences trying to beautify her native West Side. “It used to bug me to go drive through some parts of the West Side of Chicago and see all this garbage,” she said. “There were no trash cans. So I got some of my friends together and we designed garbage cans just like those cows on parade you see Downtown. That’s an example of identifying a problem and coming up with a solution for it.” The WSCDC will give away two $1,000, four $500 and four $250 scholarships—all totaling $5,000. The initiative is sponsored by Pan American Bank & Trust, Daniel and Henry Insurance Agency and Wallace Funeral Home in Broadview. “We are looking for our next ‘Thinkers and Shakers’ for answers, especially students of business technology and communications,” according to a WSCDC statement on its website. “What if we come away from this with 10 solutions for problems in areas like Maywood, Bellwood and Broadview?” Watts mused. “A lot of times, we highlight the bad

Applicants will be notified by July 31 through an email that they’ve been chosen as finalists and selected to interview before the selection panel. Anyone not called in for an interview by July 31 was not chosen, according to WSCDC’s website. The organization will have more scholarship opportunities available in the future.
Winners of the ‘Make a Change’ scholarship will be announced at a ‘Back to School Making a Change’ gospel concert, featuring Marvin Sapp, radio personality Angela Martin and Gospel artist DeAndre Patterson, who is also Miracle Revival’s pastor. The concert will be held on Aug. 19, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Miracle Revival Cathedral, 2010 Saint Charles Road in Maywood. Tickets range from $20 to $45. West Side native spreads faith through her healing After a medical scare in 2015, Jenny Christian found her voice
Free Summer Meals
All children 18 and under. Available to all families.
By LEE EDWARDS Contributing Reporter
When West Side native Jenny Christian woke up one morning without the ability to hear, she overcame it using the only tool she had at her disposal — her faith. Christian said the medical scare, which she said began in November 2015, was inexplicable even to health experts, who included an ear, nose and throat specialist. “It was a lot of fear, anxiety, trying to laugh to keep from crying and even in those moments pushing myself to work and just keep going off of it,” said Christian, who explained that she lost her hearing not long after being laid off from a job in the finance sector that she had worked for a decade. A former beauty queen, Christian had also started taking acting courses. During radio interviews and other public engagements, she said, she could barely hear. As her medical scare continued, Christian said, the negative energy became overwhelming — so much so that a friend requested that she visit a church. Christian described the visit as calming and reassuring, allowing her to believe that “everything is going to be OK.” “When you go into the house of the Lord and when you’re getting ready to worship and you have all of these other people worshiping and praising around you, you have your minister feeding your spirit, it almost relieves you of every worry because it’s teaching you that your life was already set before you were birthed into this world,” said Christian. Christian grew up in Union Missionary Baptist Church, but currently attends Living Word Christian Center in suburban Forest Park. Last January, with her faith rekindled, Christian said a miracle happened. Her hearing returned as suddenly and inexplicably as it had left. Christian, in recognition of how her faith changed her life, decided to launch a web series to highlight stories similar to hers on her blog, Fill.Heal.Restore. She said her ultimate goal is to be a beacon of hope to people

A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY: Jenny Christian lost her hearing suddenly in 2015. Last January, she suddenly regained it, along with a newfound mission. and to let them know that no matter what they’re going through they can turn to God. “I just wanted to have a platform to be a beacon of hope for other people who may be going through something to let them know no matter how difficult or how hard it may be that we can always hope in God,” said Christian. “Once you lose your hope and your faith, you get to a point where you almost want to die,” she said. “I don’t want that for anybody so I decided to create that blog and as an expansion of the blog I wanted other people to see other stories aside from mine.” Christian has already filmed the first season of her web series but is open to speaking with individuals going through their own issues. “I don’t necessarily have to be in the pulpit to minister the message of God; I can do that in the way that he’s given me,” said Christian. “Right now, my focus is to use what I know as to what he’s given me, what he’s placed on my heart as a ministry.” CONTACT: leeme117@gmail.com

o you remember the Facebook Four? That’s the name I gave to Brittany and Tanisha Covington, Jordan Hill and Tesfaye Cooper. They are the four people who broadcast on Facebook Live the torture of a young, mentally challenged teen. The video they posted quickly went viral and, because they are black and the victim is white, they were made out to be the worst villains to walk this earth ever. Both Tanisha and Tesfaye are being held in Cook County Jail and they have “no bond” placed on their incarceration. Jordan’s bond is $900,000 and Brittany’s bond is $500,000. The Facebook Four have been locked up for the past six months since January. They will have had their latest court date on Tuesday, July 18, which is after this column’s deadline. Although their crime was heinous, the young man who was the victim survived the encounter. When there is a court date, he will be able to testify against them on the aggravated kidnapping/ransom charges. I got to thinking about them as I read the update on an even more horrific crime that happened back in 2015. An 18-year-old-woman, Mubashra Uddin, gave birth in her bedroom on the eighth floor of a building on the North Side. She was unmarried and her parents didn’t know she was pregnant. At least that is what is alleged. Anyway, after giving birth and upon hearing her mother approaching the bedroom, Uddin proceeded to throw the baby out the window. The little girl was still alive when a passerby found the naked child in the grass. According to the reports given in the Chicago Tribune’s article at the time, “The girl suffered complex skull fractures, a fractured spine, a broken left shoulder, fractured left and right ribs and a lacerated aorta, as well as damage to other internal
organs, prosecutors have said.” The baby also died. That innocent child never had a chance at life. It wasn’t a victim of a Facebook Live torture, but it did suffer from the complete disregard for life by a “mother” who cared so little that rather than abort the child when she first learned she was pregnant, she instead allowed it to go full term before tossing it out the window like garbage. When initially confronted by the police, Uddin at first denied everything. Eventually she admitted her crime and was charged and held at Cook County Jail without bail. But guess what? The cold-blooded killer did get bail. Her bond was eventually set at $275,000. She got released and went home on electronic monitoring. And when she was brought before the judge to be sentenced for her crime, she got … probation … and a lousy fine of $579! That’s right, folks — as the Facebook Four sit in Cook County Jail for the crime of torturing but not killing or even coming close to killing their victim, a female who dropped a newborn head first out of a window got both bail before trial and probation as the sentencing. Her “immigrant” status had everyone understanding and feeling sorry for her. Yet no one is being understanding or feeling sorry for the four descendants of enslaved Africans for their crime. There is something very wrong when murder equals probation but silly druginduced threats equals long-term imprisonment. A black state’s attorney will mean nothing if business as usual is the standard by which she runs that office. Black folks will continue to pay for the color of the skin they’re in and the price right now doesn’t seem to include probation and a fine!
