Austin boxers serve rounds of humility A family-owned West Side business is seeking to launch youth boxing program By TERRY DEAN AustinTalks
“Move your feet, don’t stand around!” shouts Sal Ahmed to his young fighter. The teenager follows Ahmed’s advice, dancing about the ring while solo shadow boxing. The gym is sweltering hot as temps outside reach 90plus, even with windows and doors wide open. The large ring takes up nearly all of the space. The gym itself is located just down the hall from the main entry of Garfield Park’s Gold Dome. The boxing gym, one of 20 in Chicago parks but the only one on the West Side, has been around for some 40 years. For Ahmed, who grew up in Austin, it’s a second home. He’s been a trainer for over 20 years after a brief stint as an amateur boxer himself. The young fighter he’s training on this day is his 16-year-old nephew, Yousif Sal. As the morning sparing sessions wrap up, the older fighters head out to make way for the neighborhood kids, who come in the afternoons to learn the sport. Ahmed likes to train youth as well as the older guys. His family, who owns Sunset Liquor in Austin, plans to open their own youth boxing program. “Boxing is good for the kids,” Ahmed said, speaking with a passion and speed as if he’s hyping up one of his fighters in between rounds. “A lot of kids that are in the street right now, with See BOXING PROGRAM on page 4

N. Lawndale fights for extended bus routes
The North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council eyes three bus lines for extension By LEE EDWARDS Contributing Reporter
The North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council’s transportation subcommittee held a July 26 town hall meeting at the Chicago Police Department’s 10th District station to address public transit concerns and to devise immediate solutions. Rochelle Jackson, a member of NLCCC’s
Transportation Sub-Committee, said the goal of the town hall was to enlighten the community on the current transit situation and discuss the best practices moving forward. She noted several new businesses and developments have entered the community since several Chicago Transit Authority bus routes were cancelled, changed or rerouted in 2008 and 2009 due to what CTA deemed to be low ridership.
“[CTA] just decided to cut us off not giving any wherewithal to the people who live in this area who would still ride this bus,” said Jackson. “There’s businesses in this neighborhood and when you’re cut off from transportation businesses leave so our underserved neighborhood becomes more underserved.”

BOXING PROGRAM Deep roots from page 1 the tough man image, they’re really not that tough when they walk into a boxing gym. But you come in here and you’re learning, you’re releasing that tension. It’s about what it teaches, and it humbles you up.” The program will setup shop next door to Sunset in a storefront property the family owns at 5915 W. Division. At roughly 1,000 square feet, it’ll include a first-floor gym and dorm-like apartment upstairs for some of the youth. The family wants to provide both housing and training to keep kids off the street, Ahmed said. The family, which includes brothers Nayef, Bill and Naser, who runs Sunset, plan to officially break ground in November with an opening slated for early next year. This is also a way to introduce boxing to more young people, Ahmed said, adding that the gym at the Gold Dome field house, 100 N. Central Park, can take in only so many youth. The family envisions opening more youth gyms on the West Side once this first one gets established. The Ahmeds are funding the renovation themselves, including buying all the equipment for the gym. In all, they’re looking at anywhere from $40,000 to $75,000, said Naser Ahmed, who also goes by Nas. “I would love to open five of these gyms, but it comes down to funds,” he said, adding the program will be free for the kids and their families. Eventually, the family hopes to reach out
to the Chicago Park District to partner up. The boxing mentors, whom the family would like to pay, will be community folk and some of the Ahmed’s fighters. Naser also has shared the family’s vision with their elected officials. Ald. Chris Taliaferro, whom Naser spoke briefly to about the program last spring, likes the idea. “I’m very supportive of it, and I think it would bring something new to our community,” the 29th Ward alderman said. “If this program is run properly, it can be very successful. There are boxing gyms in some of the toughest communities throughout the country, and they’ve been able to produce a lot of successful people, from amateur to the professional level.” Ahmed, who’s 39, credits boxing for helping him ditch the street life as a young man. His family’s Austin roots began with their father, Mohamed, who opened Sunset in 1985. He relocated his young family from the Bronx, New York, in the early 1980s; younger brothers Naser and Bill were born in Chicago. Their dad, who died in a 2001 car accident, was committed to helping his community, Naser said. Mohamed Ahmed, a native of Yemen, would give kids $5 if they got A’s on their report card, Naser recalled. His sons have continued to give back, sponsoring barbecues, book-bag giveaways and Thanksgiving dinners, among other activities in the neighborhood. His family, Naser noted, is different from most nonblack-owned businesses in Austin. “We dedicate a certain amount of money from our business to go back into the community. We’re probably the only ones that does what we do,” he said. “It’s just the way

Chicago needs everybody to come together, especially businesses that get money from these communities. She said ATA intends to partner with NLCC to examine the current condition of the neighborhood’s transit system in order to propose lasting and effective changes by starting a petition to change the bus service, outline the neighborhood’s walkability, and evaluate the foot traffic of the community’s business corridors to present CTA with credible data to push for additional service. But now, I’m putting all I can into my nephew and the fighters I have around me, and right now my goal is to get a gym in the community I grew up in.” CONTACT: austintalks.org@gmail.com
LaFargue emphasized the importance of building sustainable businesses around the current transit system and to approach CTA with a cost and benefit approach. CTA spokesperson Jeff Tolman responded to inquiries about extending multiple bus line in North Lawndale/Austin by stating the agency must evaluate its entire system before proceeding forward. “We regularly study ridership patterns across our entire system as part of our year-round service planning efforts, holistically considering the entire city, not just individual corridors, to ensure we’re providing service where it’s most needed with the resources we have,” said Tolman. North Lawndale and lifelong CTA rider Gussie Duye said she’s pursued higher education among other aspirations while riding her neighborhood bus. She was hopeful that the conclusions reached at the town hall meeting would bring about a positive change. “I think this meeting coming together and sharing our ideas and thoughts will bring about a change and hopefully we will be able to restore the bus line,” said Duye, who has lived in the community for over 50 years. “There’s been an increase in residents moving to the neighborhood and I see a lot of young people and their children going to the Lawndale Clinic and that’s a distance for them to walk.” For more information about the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council visit https://nlcccplanning.org/. Education is the solution to all problems
M
y great-grandmother Catherine was a freed slave. She had 12 children and her youngest son, my grandfather David, only managed to get a sixth-grade education. My family, like most black people in the 20th century, lived in an agrarian society where schooling depended on the planting schedule of the land. Later they moved to an area where schooling was not based on farming and that is the reason why my grandfather and his twin sister were able to get an education at all. My grandfather in turn made sure all six of his children got an education. My mother in the 1930s not only graduated high school but went to college as well. The pursuit of education and knowledge has permeated my entire family with many who got their college degrees, attended college for a year or two and, at the least, all got their high school diploma. As I raised my own children, education was always at the forefront in my rearing of them. My daughter graduated college and my son is still working toward getting his degree. Education is the only attainment no one can ever take from you. When a person can read, they have the world at their feet. Technology has made it even better, as no longer does a person have to spend hours in the library going through a card catalog to find out the answers. A simple “Google” search and information fills the screens in seconds. That is what I did recently and discovered a movie I had never heard of as I looked for anything on Netflix starring Denzel Washington. The movie, Hard Lessons is based on the real life story of George McKenna who became a principal of a high school in Los Angeles in the early 1980s. Although the movie was made in 1986, 90 percent of the storylines are as applicable to 2016 as they were back then: A high school filled with predominately black children who aren’t taking their education seriously; the majority of their parents unconcerned about their children’s education; litter, graffiti, disinterested and burnt-out teachers; gang fights, guns and knife fights; good kids wanting an education and unable to get it; bad kids believing that prison will give them props and respect. Thus they succumb to the stupidity that will land them in jail. I was prepared to call the entire movie “a stereotype” except that it was based on reality. Now I know a lot of black folks love to profess that they are sick of seeing “movies
about slavery.” My question is at what point do we get sick of seeing movies about education being the solution when the reality is that our children aren’t getting educated? Off the top of head, I can name a plethora of movies all in the same genre as the one I saw: Blackboard Jungle; To Sir with Love; Coach Carter; Lean on Me; Dangerous Minds; Antwone Fisher; Akeelah and the Bee; The Great Debaters and on and on. Change the location, change the year, change the students and teachers, but in the end, education is the only solution that solves the problem. A school is where young minds can be molded to become the leaders of tomorrow. Education is what we were denied during slavery, and education is what we now deny ourselves as we continue to blame slavery. The constant reality is that until each parent and child takes getting an education as seriously as they take the inconsequential accessories to it — clothes, hair, cellphone, gym shoes, etc. — we will forever be at the beck and call of others. Add in the technology that is being created every day, and fewer humans are needed as machines do all the work. There is a movement to bring a new high school to Austin. I am fully in agreement with the idea so long as the new school doesn’t utilize land that is already on the tax roll. But before a new school gets here, let’s all strive to make sure children are taking their education seriously. It is the only solution we need.

W. Side convenience stores’ convenient feature — a drive-thru In & Out Food Marts allow patrons to buy without leaving their cars By WENDELL HUTSON Contributing Reporter
The In & Out Food Mart in Austin is not your average convenience store. The small, 1,200 square-foot store at 401 N. Laramie Ave. is surrounded with bulletproof glass inside, but on the outside it has one drive-thru lane for customers opting to stay in their vehicles and shop. That’s why Christmas Banner, 27, said she shops there. “It’s quick and convenient. That’s how shopping is supposed to be for customers in a hurry. Too bad all stores don’t offer the same convenience,” she said. “Having a drive-thru is especially convenient when the weather is bad or if a person is out late at night.” Store Manager Abdulhbib Hamed said most customers prefer the drive-thru over the counter. “We get most of our business from the drive thru. People prefer to sit in their cars and not have to come inside,” said Hamed. “At the end of the day it’s all about making things easier
for customers. If having a drive-thru is what it takes to get their business so be it.” Most national fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s have drive-thru features, but it’s rare for convenience stores to have one, contends Cameron Johnson, a longtime Austin resident and retired retail manager. “I worked at Walgreens for 20 years and it wasn’t until 2000 when Walgreens began installing drive-thru lanes at all its corner stores,” recalled Johnson, 71. “The philosophy retail stores now have is to make it as easy as possible for people to spend their money.” But beyond milk and bread commonly sold at most convenience stores, In & Out also sells tobacco products, medicines and even frozen pizza. No alcohol is sold and an ATM machine is on-site for customers. “The things we sell are things our customers have told us they want,” explained Hamed. “This makes it easier for them to use the drive-thru, because the items they purchase are small enough to fit through the [drive-thru] window.” Hamed added that the store owner, who according to city records is identified as Omar Alwan, has another In & Out Food Mart with a drive-thru at 4200 W. Madison St. in West Garfield Park and three more stores on the South Side. Alwan was unavailable for comment. One senior said she prefers drive-thru re-

tail stores because they’re safer. “I had knee replacement surgery 20 years ago and I still walk with a limp. Getting in and out of my car is difficult for me and I’d rather sit in my car to conduct my business,” said Austin resident Earl Sprowles, 68. “And there’s nothing safer than a drive-thru at night. If I am inside my car when someone tries to rob me I can drive off, but on foot I am a sitting duck!” However, a drive-thru is not appealing to some young people who may not have vehicles and may prefer face-to-face contact when
shopping. “Me personally, I like to see my food when I am buying something from the store,” Chip Watson, 18, said after buying some candy, chips and a pop from In & Out in West Garfield Park. “Even if I had a car I would park and go inside to buy something. That’s just me.” “I go to the corner store a lot to get little things I run out of and I like to go inside to make sure I am not given the wrong thing,” said Tara Goolsby, 25. “Plus, I like to walk and get my stuff and not be lazy driving like a lot of people do.” CONTACT: wreporter@yahoo.com

W. Side clergy present CPD with 15-point reform plan The plan calls for replacing IPRA and implementing more cultural competency training
By ROBERT FELTON Contributing Reporter
A group of West Side ministers is demanding that Chicago’s newly appointed top cop discuss reforms for the department that might help prevent the kind of violence that happened in Dallas and Baton Rouge. On July 19, about 60 members of the Chicago Clergy Coalition for Police Accountability gathered outside of Chicago Police Department headquarters demanding a meeting with newly appointed superintendent Eddie Johnson. They also hand-delivered a 15-point reform plan to Johnson’s office. The superintendent was in Washington, D.C. at the time. “When the Baton Rouge shooting happened we reconvened to discuss changes to our message,” said Rev. Marshall Hatch, the chairman of the Leaders Network, the group of West Side clergymen that hatched the idea for the July 19 demonstration. “We did not want to come across as though we were railing against the department after it had just suffered a great tragedy in Baton Rogue,” said Hatch, who is also the pastor of the New Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Garfield Park. “So we focused on looking at ways we could show support for the department while still challenging it at the same time.” The plan includes requiring officers to do cultural competency and training as part of their overall academy training so that they can better understand the communities they serve. It also calls for the creation of department of diversity

his trip to Washington later in the week. A meeting between the top cop and the ministers was planned for last week, the pastor noted. Along with discussing the reforms that members of the religious community have fleshed out, Hatch also said he planned on asking the superintendent about whether there’s a deadline to implement programs that address the city’s pressing issues with police brutality accusations and gun violence. “I felt the rally went well,” said Rev. Cy Fields, president of the Leaders Network and pastor of New Landmark Church. “It was great to see so many religious leaders unite over a very important cause.” Fields said he was not concerned about holding the rally a mere two days after the police shootings in Baton Rouge, where a lone gunman killed three officers, arguing that the clergymen can both “show sympathy and compassion about the tragic loss of life, while also start conversations about things we can correct.” The pastor noted that, although he understands reform takes time and that the ministers’ plan wouldn’t be immediately implemented, he nonetheless doesn’t want the proposals to get lost in political gridlock and red tape. “I understand reform takes time,” said Fields. “But I just want the superintendent to know that we do hope to see steady progress in the direction of change. Until then, we will continue to make our presence felt.” CONTACT: cherrycoke_duck@yahoo.com
NEWS brief West Siders feel impact of property tax hike, but not equally According to a July 31 Chicago Sun-Times investigative report, three out of every four Chicago property owners are paying higher property taxes than they paid last year in the wake of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s $318 million tax increase. The mayor got the City Council and the Chicago Board of Education to agree to the increase so that more money could be raised to pay police and firefighter pensions. A portion of the money would also go to the struggling Chicago Public Schools. West Side aldermen Jason Ervin (28th) and Chris Taliaferro (29th) voted against the tax increase while aldermen Michael Scott, Jr. and Emma Mitts both voted for the proposal. According to the Sun-Times report, taxes for all but one of the aldermen increased this year. Scott’s property tax bill went up by 2 percent — from $2,708.97 to $2,757.58 — or roughly $50. Taliaferro’s bill went up by 13 percent — from $2,782.63 to $3,136.20 — or around $354. Mitts’s bill increased by 23 percent — from $2,726.74 to $3,354.25 — or around $628. Ervin’s bill, however, decreased by 31 percent — from $4,209.79 to $2,909.34 — or
around $1,300, which is the largest tax decrease experienced by any aldermen. Ervin noted that his East Garfield Park townhouse, which he shares with his wife Melissa Conyears, was estimated two years ago by Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios’s office at a value much more than its worth. Last year, Ervin told the Sun-Times, he appealed and got the assessor’s valuation lowered from $420,000 to $240,870, adding that the “home’s purchase price three years ago was $185,000,” the Sun-Times noted. “That was just wrong,” Ervin said. According to the Sun-Times report, the number of property tax bills that increased in the 24th, 28th, 29th and 37th Wards range between 69 percent in the 24th and 75 percent in the 28th. The average tax bill in those wards ranges from a low of $2,366 in the 24th to $4,212 in the 29th. Property owners in the 28th Ward experienced the largest increase in property tax collections since last year, earning a boost of at least 19.4 percent, the Sun-Times notes. The 37th Ward experienced the smallest increase in tax collections, with less than 10 percent more tax revenue coming from property owners since last year. But as the Chicago Tribune reported recently, not only have property taxes increased, but so have the estimated value of properties made by county assessor for tax purposes, which is determined every three years. Property values in trendier, wealthier
areas of the city, such as the Gold Coast and Lincoln Park, experienced a greater increase in taxable valuation than those on the West and South Sides, the Tribune reports. In Austin, the 2015 median single-home value was $164,500, a nearly 8 percent increase, or a roughly $1,000 jump, from 2014. long after the service ended at 1:30 p.m. He added that the couple may have been estranged and that “there was probably some things going on between the two of them.” Giles said both families of the married couple were longtime members of his church. The victim, he said, sang in the young adult choir and often served food at the church. Murder-suicide takes place outside Austin church on Sunday
State senator gives away hundreds of free school supplies
Police suspect that a 38-year-old suburban man fatally shot a woman before shooting himself in an apparent murder-suicide outside of the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 5729 W. Chicago, after a July 31 afternoon church service. The shooting happened at around 2:05 p.m., according to the Chicago Tribune. The man, Roshaun D. Wilson, and the woman, Trinyce L. Sanders-Wilson, 36, both of west suburban Broadview, were pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting. According to the church’s pastor, Rev. Kenneth Giles, the shooting happened not
Sen. Kimberly Lightford (4th) hosted her 7th Annual Uplift Our Future Back-toSchool event at west suburban Brookfield Zoo on July 31. The state senator, whose district includes large parts of the West Side, including Austin, gave away roughly 800 book bags packed with school supplies. Attendees were also treated to free food and a free visit to the zoo. “God wants me to make sure every single child deserves a quality school, a good teacher and a good education,” Lightford said. West Side students become experts in city’s suffering A Dominican summer program turns young people into critical thinkers of pressing social problems By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
“A lot of people are getting shot and killed for no reason,” said 13-year-old Keyandre Embrey. “I almost got shot around a year ago.” The North Lawndale resident contemplated the city’s violence, and possible solutions to it, as part of an academic presentation he made at Dominican University in River Forest last week. Embrey was one of 40 participants in Dominican’s School of Education Reading Academy Program, a three-week summer course that paired students from schools like Chicago Jesuit Academy in Austin and KIPP Ascend Middle School in North Lawndale with 23 undergraduates, graduates and specialists seeking reading specialist certification among other teaching credentials. “We have a program that provides 45 minutes each of reading, writing, research and technology,” said Penny Silvers, the program director and a professor in Dominican’s School of Education. Elia Ellis said her son, 12-year-old Michael Allen, showed marked improvements in less than a month. “He’s only been in here for three weeks but he’s improved almost a full grade level in his reading,” said Ellis. “He’s just showing a lot more confidence and more enthusiasm.” Scott DeCaluwe, a Berwyn teacher pursuing his master’s degree in education to become a reading specialist, attributes the program’s success to its intimacy.
“I think the one-on-one time, the ability to connect with teachers individually is very important,” DeCaluwe said. “This program allows us to see kids with diverse abilities and from different backgrounds. As teachers, we learn to adjust to the students’ particularities.” Silvers said the summer program also makes students think critically about problems in the real world while cultivating in students a passion for learning and reading independently. Each year, the students receive $50 gift cards to Barnes & Noble Bookstore. This year, Silvers said, the students took a bus to the store’s downtown location within DePaul University’s Loop Campus. On July 29, during the program’s last day, Embrey and his colleagues showed an audience comprising their fellow students, parents and teachers presentations they produced with video editing software and a green screen. The presentations delved into pressing real-world issues like gun violence, lead poisoning and cyberbullying, and explored cultural phenomena like hip-hop. Keyandre’s brother, Kavion, 12, said he’d like to see more “no-guns allowed” signs in establishments and fewer loaded guns in the hands of people seeking to do harm. For Olivia Teller and Jacob Christian, 13-year-old students at KIPP Ascend, the three-week summer program allowed them to think about ways to end police brutality — a subject they know through experience. “We’ve seen people go through it with the police,” said Teller, explaining the motivation to research and produce their roughly five-minute presentation. “And we wanted peo-
ple to know that black lives do matter.” “Some police think they’re above the law and don’t have to follow the rules,’ said Christian. “Police should get more consequences. When they kill blacks, they stay on the job and still get paid. That’s not fair.” They also considered the fatal 2014 shooting of 12-yearold Tamir Rice in Cleveland by a police officer who mistook Rice’s toy gun for a real one. “Even though he was holding a gun, he wasn’t trying to attack the cops,” said Christian. “He didn’t even know somebody had called the police. They could’ve checked the gun Tamir had, but the police needed more training to do that.” The two students proposed more body cameras and more consistency among officers who wear them. Currently, they said, some cameras are worn inappropriately or are dysfunctional. Ernestine Johnson said she’s noticed the emotional and academic growth in her son Darius, 12, whose presentation comprised a rap that Johnson created with his two friends, Makhi Reed, 14, and Kameron McBroom, 13. All are students at Chicago Jesuit Academy. “We wanted to do something humorous to tell about why rap is good,” said Darius. “He’s improved in everything,” his mother, Ernestine, said. “I mean, he treats his little cousins and younger children better. He really enjoyed his time here. It was all he talked about.” CONTACT: michael@oakpark.com

How can this new year be a better one for your child?
I
t is a new school year. Make sure it starts out as best as possible for your student. A good education means a good life for your child, and Dr. Bill’s learning CenterS offer professional help. We are not just a homework helper. Too often parents of students with special education needs, or bad school attitude, or heavy family issues can’t find affordable tutors to help their struggling second to tenth graders. Universities or Social Service Associations are worth seeking out but have a long waiting list. You need an alternative opportunity for special services that is here, in your neighborhood. The sad news of failing grades or low selfesteem might cause your student to suffer by repeating a benchmark school year and can jeopardize his or her chances for a select high school acceptance. The bad news of a bad report card doesn’t stop for your high school student because, as most teachers and parents know, the first year sets the tone for the rest of high school! Now every assignment and test counts because your child’s future is on the line. These days, prospects for college scholarships and good paying jobs are bad and worse. Time doesn’t stop even if the lies of many government leaders try to paint a rosy picture of the country’s future. You know the truth that by 10th grade the issues that lead to academic failure, dropout, and a lifetime of learning disability have gone too far for your children. You have to get help now! Have you thought about or tried school interventions, doctors, hospitals, boot camps, after-school programs, bribes or even threats, but they didn’t or won’t help? You need the best that professionals can offer without paying a hardship-causing price for it. The latest research shows that specialized, intensive, motivating, and culturally relevant tutoring can turn around failures best identified after 1st grade. We have it at Dr. Bill’s Learning Centers. We also focus on students with learning disabilities: LD, ADD, anxiety and poor motivation.
Dr. Bill’s learning Centers offer a family focused, holistic, specialized tutoring program with an interdisciplinary team dedicated to improving the educational outcomes for children like yours. Unlike most other tutoring centers, we help bridge the ‘academic achievements gap’ with creative rehabilitative services. We offer individualized, one on one supplemental special instruction by trained tutors. Our unique integrated services include art therapy, which helps build alternative learning venues, creative skills and stress management. Dr. Bill’s learning Centers’ nutrition counseling helps educate families to connect a healthy and balanced diet to better brain development. Our mentoring service complements the academic assistance to uplift and empower our students. All our efforts focus on mastering fundamental skills that will strengthen your child’s self-confidence, organization and cognitive skills for life. Our strategy is to let the right tutor ‘get it right’ for your child! We look forward to answering your questions, serving your special students, or just providing encouragement to make this new school year a great one. Your children deserve a happy and productive future. Don’t give up! If you don’t call us, then please call someone now for help, before it’s too late! Best wishes from Dr. Bill and staff.

CHICAGO’s ONLY LEGAL THEMED HIGH SCHOOL
L
egal Prep Charter Academy is Chicago’s only legal-themed high school. Legal Prep, located at Washington and Kildare, in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, is a completely free high school serving students on the west side of Chicago. The school provides a high quality, college prep education and uses its legal theme to engage its students and offer unique opportunities to them. Sam Finkelstein and Rather Stanton, two lawyers by background, opened the doors of Legal Prep in 2012 with a mission to increase diversity in the legal profession, expose students on the west side of Chicago to professional careers, and provide students with skills that all lawyers possess: excellent written and oral communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and advocacy. Legal Prep students participate in monthly law programs where they have the chance to engage in legal themed activities at downtown law firms. These lawyers mentor Legal Prep students and teach them invaluable professionalism and leadership skills. In addition to these unique opportunities outside of the classroom, Legal Prep students take law courses
during their four years at Legal Prep. These courses allow students to think like a lawyer and gain exposure to critical cases that have influenced United States history. Legal Prep is pleased to share that 93% of their first graduating class is off to college this upcoming fall. These students benefitted from the top-notch education at Legal Prep and received the resources to persist through the challenges that they encountered outside of the classroom during their high school career. Legal Prep students receive socio-emotional support and counseling that make it possible for students to put their challenges aside and truly focus in the classroom. Legal Prep was recently rated as a 2+ in CPS’ SQRP rating system. This level is higher than any other high school within a 2 miles radius of Legal Prep and not surpassed by a high school within 3 miles of the campus. Legal Prep is currently inviting students to join the Legal Prep family and enroll this fall. For more information and to register, please contact Melinda Stringer at 773-922-7800 or mstringer@ legalprep.org.
