Pritzker announces 10-day sales tax holiday
During Aug. 4 visit to Roosevelt Elementary in Broadview, governor announces 5% sales tax cut on school clothes, supplies through Aug. 14 By MICHAEL ROMAIN & JERRY NOWICKI Editor & Capitol News Illinois
Carole Doss, a physical education teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School, 1927 S. 15th Ave. in Broadview, said many of her students only have part of the PE items they need at the beginning of the school year. “Often, we see students who can only get part of their equipment and then at the end of Christmas, that’s when they can get the rest of what they need,” she said. That may change if parents take advantage of a 10day reduction in the Illinois sales tax rate that starts Friday and lasts through Aug. 14. Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced the tax reduction at a press conference at Roosevelt on Aug. 4, where Doss shared her experiences teaching PE in Proviso Township. Doss, who said she has 11 grandchildren and has taught generations of students, explained that, with the tax cut measure, “maybe everybody can have Christmas in August, because when a child has the equipment that they need, they will learn.” See TAX CUT on page 4
