Chicago City Treasurer and former state representative Melissa Conyears-Ervin officially announced that she was running for U.S. Rep. Danny Davis’ (D-7) congressional seat despite allegations of unethical conduct.

“As a working mother born on the South Side, raised on the West Side, and raising my daughter on the West Side, I know how hard the people of the 7th District work every day. I also know they deserve someone representing them in Congress who works as hard as they do to make our community better,” she said in an Oct. 13 statement.

“It’s time for a change.”

She had postponed her initial announcement a month ago after the city released a complaint against her filed by her former staff members.

How those experiencing domestic violence can get help

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month reminds survivors they’re not alone and can get help

This National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re examining legal tools such as orders of protection that can protect victims from abuse or escalating violence.

These can also help financially protect them from ongoing financial abuse.

Domestic violence is often misunderstood. It is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. This means that domestic violence goes beyond physical or verbal abuse and it can involve a number of behaviors that seek to control, manipulate, intimidate or threaten a person.

The Illinois Domestic Violence Act also recognizes that domestic violence can occur outside romantic intimate relationships, affecting family members or members of the same household. Under the state law’s definition, it is defined as abuse by a family or household member. A family or household member can be a spouse, former spouse, parent, children, stepchildren and other persons related by blood, a person who share or formerly shared a common dwelling, a person who has or allegedly has a child in common, a person who shares or allegedly shares a blood relationship through a child, a person who has or has had a dating or engagement relationship and a person with disabilities and their personal assistants and caregivers.

People experiencing domestic violence do not have to endure abuse from a family member or caregiver, even when they have children together, advocates said.

Recommendations for victims of domestic violence Victims of domestic violence are not alone. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, each year in the U.S. more than 10 million people — women and men — have experienced some kind of physical abuse by an intimate partner. That includes shoving or slapping, which many don’t realize is a form of domestic violence.

More than 20,000 calls come in daily to dedicated hotlines.

There are many national and local organizations that can provide help, including counseling, relocation, shelter, legal aid, financial aid and other services.

Whether or not someone is ready to ask for help, it is important to keep a detailed records of incidents and evidence of abuse. This evidence will be very useful if the victim decides to seek court protection, said Loren Gutierrez, managing attorney for the Safety and Family Group at the Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Family Services. The legal group helps families and victims of violence obtain

The Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Services attorneys represent victims of domestic violence seeking orders of protection in civil and criminal cases specialized legal representation and assistance in cases of domestic violence, family law and cases when a victim requests an order of protection as part of a criminal case.

“Even if you don’t call the police or even if you don’t [immediately] go to court, keeping track of what happened – the dates, locations, specifics of the incident, bank records is incredibly helpful,” Gutierrez said.

Safely saving evidence like clothing, damaged property or pictures of injuries and damage is also important according to the Office of the Illinois Attorney General.

Orders of protection: What they are and how to get them Orders of protection keep victims — also referred to as survivors — of domestic violence safe, Gutierrez said.

“Those are the court orders that help someone when they are being abused,” Gutierrez said. From 2014 to 2022, the group provided extended legal services for 701 West Side cases. About 68% were domestic violence cases where victims initially wanted help getting an order of protection and 30% of the cases were divorce or family law cases.

Despite claims that they don’t work, research shows that when they’re implemented fully, they significantly reduce abuse and violence.

Orders of protection are available to family or household members to restrict a perpetrator of violence from contacting a survivor, showing up at the survivor’s residence, school, workplace and other locations and continuing to physically or verbally abuse, threaten or intimidate a survivor of domestic violence, according to the Office of the Illinois Attorney General.

“A court order is supposed to stop abuse and that allows the victim to have a court enforceable or a police enforceable order to help stop it,” Gutierrez said.

Violating an order of protection is a misdemeanor and the perpetrator could go to jail and face fines. A second violation of an order of protection can be a felony.

Starbucks’ first Austin store outside of Galewood was always meant to be community-oriented – but so far, that community doesn’t necessarily seem to be Austin.

The Starbucks at Washington Square shopping plaza, inside the former Pizza Hut, quietly opened in June and is part of the chain’s community store program.

The idea is to engage and invest in communities that historically haven’t seen much investment by working with local nonprofits, hiring locally, engaging with local, preferably minority-owned contractors and hiring local artists to paint interior art. At the time, Starbucks didn’t release much information about what the community component would look like, saying that they would save that for the official opening.

The chain followed through after the Oct. 5 grand opening, and so far, the Austin-based Starbucks has a West Humboldt Park flavor. Store manager Ellisa Lotti is a Humboldt Parker, and so is artist Rubén Aguirre, who painted the colorful mural that decorates the western wall. But in a statement to the media, Lotti said that both West Humboldt Park and North Austin are priorities for her, and she will build connections in both communities.

Until the opening of the Washington Square store, Starbucks only had two West Side locations, and both of them were in Galewood. The location at 7112 W. North Ave. has been around for years, and another opened in March at 2001 N. Harlem Ave. The West Side doesn’t have many coffee shops. Lawndale Christian Health Center operates the Green Tomato Café at on Ogden Avenue, and Beelove Cafe opened in 2021 in Homan Square. More recently, Momentum Coffee, a Chicago Black-owned coffee chain, opened a North Lawndale location and an Austin location inside the new Broader Urban Involvement & Lead-

Starbucks’ Community Store program launched in 2015. One of its first community stores opened in Chicago, in the South Side’s Englewood neighborhood. Since then, it ramped up its commitment to expand its stores. Its current goal is to open 1,000 community stores worldwide by 2030.

The chain determines where to open community stores based on the American Human Development Index, an economic indicator developed by economist Mahbub ul Haq. The index looks beyond economic signs to incorporate factors such as life expectancy, educational attainment, median earnings, race, gender and geography.

According to Starbucks, the Austin location has 25 employees. In a statement, Lotti said that she was “honored” to be appointed its manager. “[I enjoy] connecting with others in our community to understand and advocate for our local needs,” she said. “Living in this community, I am excited to provide resources and a safe space to an area that is limited and underserved, the West Humboldt/ North Austin area.”

Lotti said that a big part of it is learn-

ing more about the community and talking with organizations that work there is a big part of that vision.

“Together, we will find ways to grow and build opportunities through hosting events, building relationships, and working together to support one another and our local needs,” she said.

Lotti said that so far, she plans to host events such as job preparedness workshops and Coffee with Community events.

She said that she plans to host “office hours” where residents and stakeholders can come in and discuss what they do.

“We are so excited to be part of this community and want to make sure that whatever we do has our community and customers in mind,” Lotti said.

“We will be engaging our customers to understand what means the most to them and this unique and energizing community.”

One of the store’s most distinctive features is a mural that stretches from the door to the restrooms, featuring bright, colorful flowers and trees. Austin Weekly News was unable to interview Aguirre by deadline, but in a statement provided by Starbucks, he said the park that gave the Humboldt Park community its name was his inspiration.

When the perpetrator of violence and the survivor have children in common, orders of protection can help establish temporary legal custody, visitation rights and child support. Often, orders of protection are requested in divorce cases involving domestic violence.

“People might think that someone is using the court system to keep their other partner away from the children,” Gutierrez said. Instead, they are designed to keep survivors and their families safe, she said.

“We have a lot of clients who actually want to co-parent with the other person and that order protection is really just there to keep them safe while they’re doing that,” she said.

It also helps to set legal terms for custody and visitation, protecting the children’s and parents’ rights.

Orders of protection can be requested even if an arrest wasn’t made. Victims of domestic violence can seek help from

domestic violence shelters or other service providers or they can directly visit the local circuit court clerk’s office to request an order of protection. They can also be filed by an attorney in civil courts, as part of a divorce case or as part of a criminal trial for abuse.

Where to get help If you experience physical, verbal, financial or emotional abuse, intimidation, threats or harassment from a family member, partner or caregiver, you can get help 24/7.

Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. English and Spanish services are available, as well as help in other languages through interpretation. Help via text is available by texting START to 88788.

To get legal help, call the Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Family Services at 312-986-4200. The group also has an office at the domestic violence courthouse at 555. West Harrison, where victims can seek emergency orders of protection and be connected to wraparound services provided by Metropolitan Family Services.

Black musicians to take the Kehrein’s stage this week

Afro-Cuban star Daymé Arocena and Emmy-Award winning artist Orbert Davis will perform in Austin Oct. 19 and 20

At the end of this week, West Side residents can enjoy musical performances led by two prominent Black musicians at Austin’s Kehrein Center for the Arts.

Afro-Cuban singer and composer Daymé Arocena takes the stage Oct. 19 for a performance that promises soul and jazz sounds inspired in Cuban rhythms. Arocena was described by NPR as a “strong and powerful voice” who is “reigniting the Cuban soundtrack.”

She will visit the Austin arts center as part of the Global Music Series presented in partnership with Old Town School and the International Latino Cultural Center. Admission is free and the event starts at 7:30 p.m.

Following Arocena’s performance, Emmy-Award winning composer and trumpeter Orbert Davis will return to the Kehrein Center for the Arts.

On Oct. 20, the Chicago Jazz Philhar-

monic, which he co-founded, will present “Orbert Davis’ Soul Migration.” The jazz group aims to draw attention to the history, heritage and future of jazz in Chicago, one deeply influenced by Black musicians.

“Orbert Davis’ Soul Migration” is inspired by the Great Migration, drawing on the stories of 6 million African Americans who fled north in the Jim Crow era. It was commissioned in 2016 for the Chicago Jazz Festival on the 100th anniversary of the Great Migration launch.

“Last year the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic had this idea to come to the Kehrein Center to present three concerts ...” he said last month at the venue’s mural unveiling ceremony, where he invited attendees to upcoming presentations.

Tickets are $1 and the event starts at 7 p.m.

“It’s about us. It’s about making it affordable, making accessible, making it real,” Davis said.

CONYEARS-ERVIN Presses ahead from page 1 In a 2020 letter, Tiffany Harper, ConyearsErvin’s former chief of staff, and Ashley Evans, another city treasurer employee, said that they were fired in retaliation after they questioned what they described as the abuse of power. The city settled with the ex-employees, and Conyears-Ervin denied the allegations.

Austin community activist Kina Collins, who ran against Davis in the last two Democratic primaries, coming close to unseating him in 2022, said she wasn’t too concerned about the race, saying that she still believed the momentum was on her side. She reiterated her position that the allegations were damning if true and said that the voters will make up their own minds.

Davis told this publication that he was focusing on getting things done for his constituents.

“I am spending my time working for the people as I always have and always will do,” he said. “I don’t have much time to worry about what the City Treasurer is announcing. I notice that in her statement Melissa stated that people wanted someone to represent them who will work harder for them than they do. I would say to her ‘follow my record.’ She will learn how it’s done.”

Harper’s and Evans’ complaint alleged that, among other things, Conyears-Ervin used her employees to organize her daughter’s party and to be her bodyguards. They also accused her of hiring politically connected individuals for positions they weren’t qualified for, pressuring a bank to give a loan to a third party on a building that houses her husband’s, Ald. Jason Ervin (28th), ward office, and using city resources to support churches connected to her and Ervin.

According to the letter, Conyears-Ervin hired a former Chicago police officer to act as assistant to the city treasurer – a job that required financial training that the ex-officer allegedly didn’t have – and had him act as her security guard. The letter said that Conyears-Ervin hired Gina Zuccaro, who objected to nominating petitions for several candidates who ran against Ervin in 2019, as an administrative assistant.

The letter also alleged that the treasurer pressured BMO Harris Bank, one of the banks where the city stores its deposits and which has a branch in the West Garfield Park portion of the 28th Ward, to give a mortgage to the building where Ervin’s al-

New mural at BUILD showcases Austin youth’s passion and determination ‘I feel like that’s what inside the building,’ says mural artist Dwight White

When young people arrive at BUILD’s South Austin campus, they will see young people’s faces reflected on the new mural at the northwest corner of its main building.

“I wanted to put up youthful faces looking inspired, looking determined, looking passionate,” said Chicago artist Dwight White at the mural unveiling on Oct. 12. “I feel like that’s what is inside of that building.”

Later that evening, about a dozen middle school par-

ticipants in BUILD’s art program demonstrated their passion and determination during a master class in mural making led by White.

BUILD’s arts programs were initially created to divert young people from participating in gangs, offering them a space to learn new skills and be creative, said Rick Miranda, manager of the arts academy.

Today, they continue to provide free opportunities for nearly 70 local middle and high schoolers to learn, incorporating art and STEM with classes like fashion design, podcasting and music, woodworking

At the master class, young people learned from White how to use professional spray paint, how different cap sizes produce different strokes and how to paint straight lines when making a mural.

Young participants enthusiastically took turns to practice and create a monochromatic purple mural on a wooden surface built by participants in the nonprofit’s wood shop program.

“It was hard, but it was good,” said Miair, a student at George Leland elementary school and BUILD’s arts program.

Dashona, also a student at George Leland School, likes the way spray paint “comes out” of the can and “goes every-

where.” The sound of shaking a spray paint can is like ASMR, she said.

“I just like to make a mess,” Dashona said.

It was not the first time students like Miair and Dashona used spray paint, but it was the first time they learned from a renowned local artist.

“It was nice to see the person who made the mural outside,” Dashona said.

White hopes this experience will inspire “one or two future artists,” he said.

“You can use your talents or use your passions to actually be influential, to make a difference, make change and be creative,” he said.

That vision guided White to create a visual “asset” for the community inspired by the community. The mural will be an entry point that evokes emotions and interest upon arriving on the West Side from I-290, he said.

“Creativity drives culture,” White said.
