A New York artist channels Austin

Shinique Smith has been commissioned to create artwork for Austin/Chicago bus turnaround By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter

At a Dec. 8 meeting convened by the Austin African American Business Networking As-

sociation (AAABNA), community members got a chance to hear from an artist who has been hired to spruce up the bus turnaround on the northeast corner of Austin and Chicago Avenues. Although the Chicago Transit Authority has been incorporating public art into ‘L’ stations for years, this will mark the first time the agency will install art at a bus turnaround. New York-based artist Shinique Smith has been chosen to create the public installation. At last week’s meeting, held at Sankofa

Cultural Arts Center, 5820 W. Chicago Ave. in Austin, Smith said that she is still working out a concept for the installation, but assured residents that she’ll use the site’s layout and Austin area’s history as inspiration. AAABNA members and residents all said that they wanted something that would serve as a welcoming gateway and a monument to the community’s history and to African American culture. Whatever design Smith comes up with will have to be approved by the CTA. If everything stays on schedule, it is expected to be

unveiled no sooner than late 2017. The turnaround has existed, in some form or another, since at least 1895, when Cicero & Proviso Street Railway street car company built a line along Chicago Avenue between Cicero and Austin Avenue. The line was converted to a trolleybus line in 1952 and into a diesel bus line in 1967. Over the past few decades, the turnaround has experienced several service changes. It currently serves as a final western stop

STREET beat

Damon Williams, 23, on Freedom In August, I spoke to Chicago activist Damon Williams, who helped setup an impromptu protest encampment, called Freedom Square, across the street from the Chicago Police Department’s Homan Square facility. Homan Square had become notorious for allegations of torture and other constitutional violations made by community members, many of them black males. I thought Williams’ words on freedom, given during an interview within the encampment, were worth revisiting. We’re just continuing the struggle of the Black Power and Civil Rights movements and the leftist radical movements of the 1920s. That means addressing and being honest in a way that America is not about what this society is and working towards organizing people in the name of power to change what’s going on. Policing and state sanctioned militarism and violence is an entry point, but it’s not just about cops. It’s not about good cops and bad cops. It’s not just about police killings. This is about the entire system, this is about banking, this is about the dollar, it’s about our two- party system. Basically every institution works together to uphold a status quo that is drenched in racist, violent history. We’re trying to be

intersectional and as widespread as possible, but also trying to have specific focuses that are tangible in order to create a liberated society for black people, and in turn, for everybody. We’re trying to create a new, better world. We’re not just yelling.

SHINIQUE SMITH A challenge ahead from page 1 of CTA Route 66, which travels between the turnaround and Navy Pier along Chicago Avenue. Northbound CTA Route 91 buses, which serve Austin Avenue, stop on the west side of the turnaround, allowing easy transfers. Over the past year, AAABNA has been working to attract more businesses to this part of Chicago Avenue, which they have been referring to as the “Soul corridor” — both to invoke Austin’s history as a black community and the fact that Chicago Avenue is often described as “the soul of Chicago.” The Dec. 8 meeting was designed to be a forum where AAABNA members and any Austin residents interested in attending could find out about what the turnaround project and tell Smith and the CTA what they want to see. In his introductory remarks, Malcolm Crawford, AAABNA’s executive director, described the project as a way to build on recent successes. “We had seven businesses open in this corridor this year,” he said. “It’s just an exciting time, and though I’ve been involved the whole year, it’s just God moving things along.” Crawford said the turnaround project is an opportunity to create an entryway that would emphasize Austin’s African American identity, similar to the Greek columns in Greek Town, the Mexican art at Pilsen’s 18th Street ‘L’ station and the Puerto Rican flags that hover over traffic in Humboldt Park. Elizabeth Kelly, CTA’s project coordinator, explained that funding for the project comes from the Federal Transit Administration. It will just be the latest project built as part of the CTA’s public art program. Since 2004, the FTA funds were spent on a number of stations, including the Central Park-Conservatory Green Line ‘L’ station, and the Pulaski, Central Park, Kedzie and California Pink Line ‘L’ stations. In February 2016, the transit agency went out to bid for projects for four facilities, including the Austin turnaround. Smith was the agency’s top selection. Her work has been exhibited at The Studio Museum of Harlem; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Brooklyn Museum of Art; Denver Art Museum; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Bronx Museum of the Arts; and The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. “We’re really, really excited that an artist of her stature applied for the project, and we feel that her work will enhance it,” said Kelly.

BODY OF WORK: The city has tapped the internationally recognized artist Shinique Smith (shown during a video interview for the Museum of Fine Arts Boston) with to create public art for the Chicago/Austin bus turnaround. Bottom left, “Quickening,.” Right, “Black/Blue/ Green/Yellow/Orange/Red/Pink.” Courtesy of shiniquesmith.com

As Smith explained during the meeting, she draws inspiration from graffiti, her classical art training, and used clothing, as well as her own identity as a black woman. “Part of why I work this way is how, unlike when I was drawing a picture of something, I wanted to create a feeling,” she said. “I wanted to create work that would convey many messages at once.” Getting community input is important to her, as is creating something that would inspire children the way artwork inspired her when she was young, Smith said, adding that there are similarities between Baltimore’s Edmondson Village neighborhood, where she grew up, and Austin. Both are formerly white communities that underwent rapid demographic shifts due to “white flight” and racist blockbusting, and both saw economic declines in the 1980s.

Smith said she plans to draw on Austin’s history and do workshops with local students, incorporating their work into the project. But Smith made it clear that public input will only go so far. “The mission is not so much, ‘I want this and that,’ she said. “It’s more of, ‘Not only what you say and suggest, but my interpretation of it,’” she said. Smith said that the fact that the turnaround has no walls whatsoever presents a challenge, but one she could see herself overcoming. “I don’t create spaces,” she said. “I really try to respond to sites and feel them out. It’s exciting for me as an artist because it’s not going to be like anything I’ve made.” While Smith said she was still in the very early stages of brainstorming, she added that she was aiming to create something that

would transform the turnaround into more of a public space where people would want to congregate. Resident Vannesa Stokes said that she inherited a large archive of pictures from her father, and she and her sister were looking for some way to display them in some public venue in Austin. “I just wanted to share this with you, just so you know that we’re here, and we’re here to stay, and we’d like to participate in whatever [art] is going on in Austin,” Stokes told Smith. Explaining the approval process, Kelly said that Smith will submit two proposals that will be evaluated based on durability, stability and whether they would interfere with the buses. The CTA approves the final design, which is then presented to the public. Only after all this will construction begin. CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com

Austin Weekly News, December 14, 2016

It is always time to feed our minds

had a chance to speak with an old friend at a recent event. She told me she reads my column weekly. I smiled at hearing that. Then she added that, as of late, my columns have been on lighter tones than in the past. She is right. I have been taking a mental break from some of the harder-hitting things as the reality of just how deep the problems are can be overwhelming. On average, we live to be at least 70-something years of age. As I journey toward the final years of my life, I know my time here is less than the time I have already been here. The reality that the black community and neighborhoods are filled with so many problems, many of which can be solved by self-imposed moral decisions, is mentally devastating. At the same time, I don’t know which is more important: questioning how we got to this point or acknowledging that we are at this point. The year 2016 is coming to a close and with it the end of the Obama presidency. The year 2017 will bring in Donald Trump (barring shenanigans with the Electoral College vote). I already know that his presidency will bring an endless list of things to write about. The Rev. Al Sharpton has already announced he is holding a march in Washington D.C., but without crystal clear goals, I don’t know what the outcome or success factor will be. I’ve also noticed on Facebook that the vitriol against Donald Trump has subsided tremendously. But what isn’t happening, as far as I know, are the movers and shakers who should be making solid plans to address what life will be like under a Trump presidency. Trump is picking several former generals to be in his cabinet and he has spoken of “law and order,” but what exactly

that translates to will only be known after he takes office. No matter who is in office, it is time for black folks to take seriously the issue of education. It was a mere 20 years ago or less that the majority of people living at that time, who were ages 10 and up, had virtually no clue as to what the internet was. It was only the talk about Y2K (the year 2000) and how it would affect computer programs that gave many people their first inkling about that aspect of technology. Yet here we are approaching 2017 and we still have people who cannot read, do their own 1040EZ tax return or graduate high school and have the skills available to perform the ever-increasing, high-technology skill jobs that are out here. The truth and reality is that if the cash register machine doesn’t tell the clerk at the fast food counter how much change to give, many would be at a loss. When I think of education, I also think of how the late Fidel Castro, president of Cuba, was able in 50 years to get his country to a 99.8% literacy rate. If he could do it there, with limited access to technology, while under an embargo from the U.S. government, what can this country do? I’ll ponder that and a whole lot more as the New Year gets underway. In the meantime, everyone should get a book and read it. Especially as Christmas dawns and the little kids will get toys galore. The more we know, the better off we will be. Even a moron who climbs a pole and touches an electrical wire and kills himself teaches us what not to do. Let us begin to feed our minds with knowledge the same way we feed our bodies for strength.

If you’re part of a group of seniors talking about mortgage fraud — whatever it is, if it involves prevention, I’m here to help out.” Illustrating one case in which his problemsolving translated into someone’s material improvement, Headley offered the case of an aspiring young businessman on the West Side. [While with the bank], I had a client who [owns properties],” Headley said. “He was young, 27 at the time, when he bought his first piece of property. He wanted to get into real estate and I gave him the same sermon [I give others].” Headley explained that he recommended to the young man that he maintain a high credit score and pour his earnings back into his business. “When he refinanced one property, he took the cash out but he didn’t go spend it; he went and put it back into the building he had,” Headley said. “He sold the building, took that money and he kept, literally, stacking money on top of money.” Since then, Headley said, “I’ve watched him grow his portfolio to over 20 properties over a three-year span. He has properties throughout the West Side of Chicago, now. And he did it the right way.” CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

FREE PREGNANCY TESTING LEE EDWARDS/Contributor

GUIDING LIGHT: Norris Stevenson, right, works with a man seeking employment help during state Rep. La Shawn K. Ford’s hiring event.

Lawmaker helps ease obstacles to male employment Rep. La Shawn Ford held an event to help area men secure numerous forms of ID By LEE EDWARDS Contributing Reporter

According to a recent article by the Chicago Tribune, African Americans make up 52 percent of the city’s unemployment rate and 40 percent of residents who are not in the labor force despite being just 29 percent of the city’s population. However, numerous community leaders in the city have tried to address unemployment, including elected officials like State Rep. La Shawn Ford (8th), who hosted an event designed on Dec. 3 to try to alleviate the black male unemployment rate. Held at the Austin Wellness Center, 4800 W. Chicago Ave., Ford’s event helped area men reacquire their driver’s license and other forms of identification that may have been suspended due to complications from child support. “We continue to hear that the unemployment rate is down to four percent, but they can’t possibly be including black people in that number because black youth and black men are rated the highest in unemployment,” said Ford. Ford said that the government can sometimes be an unnecessary barrier for fathers interested in paying child support. Some understanding by the state, he said, can go a long way. “The most important thing is to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to have work, but driver’s licenses tend to be a barrier keeping people from getting to and from work,” said Ford. “We have men that want to pay their child support but can’t because they can’t get a job; so we can’t give any ex-

cuse for anyone not to pay.” Ford highlighted ride share services like Uber and Lyft as viable employment avenues that require a driver’s license. Norris Stevenson, deputy administrator for field operations for the Illinois Dept. of Healthcare and Family Services division of child support services, was asked by Ford to take part in the event. Stevenson said that the presence of so many men at the event helps dispel the myth that black fathers want nothing to do with their children. “You look here today and you see a roomful of fathers who are saying let’s take care of the issues today that are causing me not to be able to provide as much as I possibly can for my family,” said Stevenson. “By helping the fathers, we also help the children that they’re helping to raise.” Kevin Lillybridge, a South Holland resident, learned of the program from an internet advertisement. He said he was unaware of any other outlets providing the service. He called his current economic outlook “very challenging.” “I’m taking jobs and working jobs where the wage rate is much lower and because I am an older employee,” said Lillybridge. “I don’t think people want to give an opportunity to someone who has been in the work force a little bit longer than some of the people much younger than me.” Lillybridge, who said he’s up to date on his child support payments, believes in paying child support for both ethical and legal reasons. He called the full room of applicants seeking to get their licenses reinstated “alarming”. “It’s a double edged sword,” said Lillybridge. “You want them to work to pay the money but you are holding back from getting their license.” CONTACT: leeme117@gmail.com

Monthly meal helps nourish community

Friendship Baptist Church’s dinner gives residents a safe haven, free food By DAVID WOODS AustinTalks

On the second Saturday of each month, dozens of people gather at Friendship Baptist Church, 5200 Jackson Blvd. in Austin, for fellowship and a free meal provided by the church.

Since 2014, has been hosting the monthly community meal in order to bring people in the Austin community together in a safe haven and to allow them to socialize with their neighbors. “Our second Saturday community meal is something I find extremely important,” said the church’s pastor, Reginald E. Bachus. “When the idea was first brought up to me I was like, ‘Why not?’ Every member of the community may not belong to the church, but the church belongs to every member of the community,” he said. When Bachus became pastor of the church

in 2006, he said he wanted to build a ministry focused on fellowship and community. “Offering the community a free meal fit into the model of what I wanted the ministry to be built on,” he said. “I remember us trying to figure out a way to do something good for the community that would bring people together, so when our community outreach minister came across this opportunity I was pleased. “ Sharon Hartshorn, president of community outreach for the church and an active volunteer in Austin, said it was “the grace of god” that brought the opportunity to her church.

“One day I was at a community meeting, and a young lady approached me and started telling me she was a part of a network of four churches that have a feeding ministry,” she said. “The young lady told me due to unforeseen circumstances one of the churches had to drop out. They extended the offer to join the ministry to Friendship Baptist.” The other churches involved in the monthly meals include Truth and Deliverance, 3 S. Laramie (the 1st Saturday); Bethel Lutheran Church, 130 N. Keeler (the 3rd Saturday); and Garfield Park Community Worship Center, 4100 W. Jackson (the 4th Saturday). Meals are served from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The food ministry has a partnership with Trader Joe’s, which delivers food to the four sites a week before the community meal takes place. “Trader Joe’s donates food to us that is close to the expiration date,” Hartshorn said. “We never know exactly what we are going to get and how we are going to prepare it.” One recent Sunday, the church received 30 pounds of chicken with which they cooked fried chicken and chicken noodle soup. The food is prepared and cooked by the churches’ various ministries, volunteers and organizations looking to serve their community. “In our church, we have eight ministries, and we ask a different ministry to host each month,” Hartshorn said. One recent Saturday, it was the church’s Missionary Society hosting the community meal alongside volunteers from 100 Black Men. John Griffin, 60, an Austin resident, looks forward to the second Saturday each month. “I think this is good for the neighborhood,” he said. “It helps people to get to know one another.” Griffin said he loves to see people taking the initiative to bring positivity into urban communities plagued by violence and drugs. “If the people in the community can come together and find a way to communicate, they can create change,” he said. The meal brings out an array of people from across Austin and its surrounding communities. Joshua Dinkins, 22, makes it a goal to attend the community meal every month. The Austin resident said he sees this as a way for him to be safe and fellowship with people just like him. He hopes to start volunteering one day. “On Saturdays, it’s nothing to do in the area that won’t lead to trouble,” he said. “When I stumbled across this I knew it was a perfect way for me to do something positive and fellowship with my neighbors.” Dinkins said he loves the welcoming environment. “You don’t have to know anyone in the room, but if you speak, they are so friendly and open,” he said. Betty Gilliam, a church member the last 10 years, has attended every community meal since 2014. “Even when I am experiencing issues with my legs, I don’t let that discourage me from coming,” she said. West Side commanders won’t miss 2016

The 11th and 15th District top cops lamented this year’s violence, spoke of progress By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter

The West Side’s violence woes were recently explored by the New York Times in a Dec. 9 feature article, which focused on the 11th police district. “Homicides citywide are up about 56 percent compared to last year and shootings are up about 49 percent, but just five of Chicago’s 22 police districts are driving the bulk of Chicago’s rise,” wrote Times correspondent Monica Davies. “All are on the South or West Sides. “In the 11th, shootings are up by 78 percent compared to a year ago, and homicides are up 89 percent. So far in 2016, 91 people have been killed in this district, where only about 74,000 people live. That is more homicides than in all of last year in entire cities, such as Seattle (population 684,000), Omaha (444,000) and Buffalo (258,000).” A month earlier, the man responsible for keeping a lid on the 11th District’s cauldron of gun violence, Commander Kevin Johnson, joined his 15th District counterpart,

Commander Dwayne Betts, at a community and illegal guns on them before they even meeting hosted by Ald. Jason Ervin (28th). reached the apartment they meant to enter. Betts also said that since CPD and the ACLU agreed to change the way the police handles street stops, some of tactics that the officers once used are now off the table. The commander said the changes complicated the officers’ efforts to catch criminals. “There are some things we can’t do that we used to do,” he said. “But that doesn’t stop me from doing what I can do.” For example, Betts said, officers can’t simply search people on a hunch; they have to have a good reason to believe a person might be carrying guns or drugs. The fact that the officers now have to write longer reports detailing each stop slows them down, he said. “It makes life more challenging, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do [our jobs],” Betts said.
