BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Jailyn Logan-Bledsoe, a teen activist and granddaughter of West Side NAACP leader, was killed at a BP gas station in early morning hours

By STACEY SHERIDAN Wednesday Journal

“Several Oak Park g as station owners

ity to re gulate businesses should ille g al activity take place on business-owned property through an amendment to the nuisance ordinance. Gas stations and all other licensed businesses are now included in the nuisance ordinance

Should the ordinance pass, the BP gas station would be legally compelled to only op erate within an established timeframe The same goes for all of Oak Park’s other gas stations. Ratekin believes this blanket approach will serve to benefit public safety as a whole.

Through the amendment, the village can now enter into voluntary abatement agreements with a business at the discretion of the village manager. Abatement ag reements could involve “numerous measures that have to be taken by the businesses, shor t of closing” and emergency closure procedures are included if there is a risk to the community, according to Village At tor ney Paul Stephanides

The village has had a total of 18 violent of fenses take place at g as stations in the last three and a half years; 13 of those of fenses took place after midnight, including Lo g an-Bledsoe’s murder.

“The only thing we can do that will clearly reduce violent crime and gun violence in Oak Park would be to reduce the opportuni ty for violent encounters,” Taglia said. “We need to be proactive, not reactive.”

The village board took substantial action Se pt. 5 to combat future instances of lawbreaking by, most notably, directing staf f to draft an ordinance that would ef fectively outlaw g as stations from operating around the“Thisclock.is a first ste p we can take in trying to really bring peace to our village,” Trustee Chibuike Enyia said of the soon-to-be created ordinance.

These two actions preceded the biggest development concer ning g as stations to come out of the board meeting: the direc tion to staf f to draft an ordinance to establish a 12 p.m. closing time for g as stations on the outer perimeters of Oak Park and an 11 p.m. closing time for stations on in terior village streets. Gas stations would have the ability to open at 5 a.m. each day.

have retained counsel and intend to provide data in opposition to the proposed or dinance,” a representative from Hargobind Inc., the entity that owns the BP station on Chicago Avenue, wrote in an email to Wednesday Jour nal.

That particular 24-hour station, located at 100 Chicago Ave., has become the axis on which the g as station issue has revolved. The BP has been closing at 11 p.m. since theWimurder.thone trustee seat vacant, the six re maining village board of ficials voted in fa vor of spending $6,000 to install a physical pinch point to curb the fl ow of traf fic from that BP station into the abutting residential neighborhoods. The pinch point will sit in the 500 block of Nor th Taylor Avenue; the BP stands at the cor ner of that street and Chicago Avenue

While each member of the board expressed solemn support at the meeting for ending 24-hour gas station operations, Trustee Jim Taglia was the first to broach the hours topic calling for a more preemptive village response.

One of the letter’s signatories Diane Ratekin said those who added their name to the letter are pleased with the outcome of the Sept. 5 meeting, especially regarding the po tential ordinance limiting hours.

The tragic murder of 18-year-old teen activist Jailyn Lo g an-Bledsoe, the grand daughter of longtime Westside Branch NAACP leader Phyllis Lo g an, last June put renewed focus on crime perpetrated at Oak Park’s 24-hour g as stations, which has been trending upward in the last few years.

Ratekin lives nearby the Chicago Avenue BP station. She and her neighbors have seen a positive change since the station ceased op erating 24 hours each day.

4 Austin Weekly News, September 14, 2022

The board’s efforts were ushered forward in large part by Oak Park residents in a suc cessful campaign this summer to keep the village’s focus on gas station safety A letter signed by 66 residents was sent to the village board back in August, beseeching the board to take greater action. The measures taken by the village board related to gas stations were among the recommendations specified

“We don’t have confidence that the station owner will continue to do that once the attention is drawn elsewhere,” she said.

“We know that this is an issue not just with us, but with everybody,” Ratekin said. “That’s why we’re very happy that it’s vil lage-wide.”

After a month-long hiatus, the village board retur ned to vir tual chambers with a jam-packed meeting Se pt. 5. A significant por tion of that meeting was spent approv ing measures to reduce g as station crime overall, as well as at the BP where Lo g anBledsoe’s life was taken.

Young players from Jesse Owens Park suit up for KAOS Football at Soldier Field, the current home of their hometown NFL team.

The Bears have been “gracious” to CPS, helping start a girls flag football varsity league and hosting clinics, Pruitt said. But he ries pl ers may lose their connection to the city if the stadium is in Arlington Heights and the practice facility remains in suburban Lake Forest.

Pruitt and others said they understand the business sense of the Bears moving to a state-of-the-art stadium in the spacious suburbs

“Being a lifelong Bears fan, we’ve seen them bluff for years, but the reality that the move might actually happen now is almost unfathomable,” Stewart said. “It’s going to impact fans in communities like mine — communities of color and kids inside nonprofits. It’s going to be more difficult to travel there and be part of it.”

“For them to be close to a stadium and feel like they can participate and make it there is a wonderful opportunity,” Radcliffe said. “If they move to Arlington Heights, we could still get out there, but it won’t be the same. It’d be nice to see more of these football players in

Bears Care, the charitable wing of the team, has sponsored flag football and junior tackle leagues for city high schoolers and youths, as well as provided them free tickets to a Bears game during Play Football Month, according to its website. The team gave grants for training equipment to two Chicago high schools and plans to help open a healthy living center in Auburn Gresham this fall.

In addition, they pointed to a 60 percent success rate for union organizing petitions in Illinois last year, the highest in more than a decade, with workers under age 35 and female workers showing the largest growth in unionization rates.

The study also showed, however, that the overall percentage of the state’s workforce that was in a union declined from one year ago.The analysis by the pro-union Illinois Economic Policy Institute and the Project for Middle Class Renewal at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign showed that union membership statewide grew a little more than 2 percent, to 752,063, over the previous year. and local gover nment workers still make up the overwhelming majority of union workers in Illinois, with 49.9 percent of those workers belonging to unions compared to 8.6 percent of private sector workers.Butthe unionization rate among public sector workers in Illinois has been declin ing, due in large part to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in Janus v. I momentarily thought about getting a storage unit. I see it’s one of the fastest-growing business sectors in Amer ica. Everywhere you go, old buildings or new buildings are being utilized as storage facilities. And people, because they don’ t want to get rid of their stuf f, are willing to pay a hundred bucks or more a month to store the treasure troves piled in it.

I was telling a friend the other day that I had ac quired all the clear plastic storage bins I needed in order to hold all the Christmas decorations I put out last year. Then it dawned on me. Within the next 8 to 10 weeks, I’ll be putting Christmas decorations out again. OMG!

Did you know that in the absence of local journalism, there is increased government corruption, lower voter turn-out, fewer people to run for o ce, and that false information spreads?

my lo gic is, “If I need it, I have it.” And that’s the reason I have so much stuf f. From Goodwill, to garage sales, estate sales, and clearance items at the stores, I’ve acquired so many things that I’ll have should I need it T he problem is, the older I get, the less I’m going to need it. So I’m going to challenge myself to begin shedding all the stuf f I have accumulated

Tab Ser vice Company moving into former home of Walles Music store in Galewood, buildout could be done by spring 2023

Vacant buildings tend to suck the energy out of a district, so Tab Service taking over the space will add vitality to the North Avenue district, Alexander said.

“We’re going to stay put,” Lambert said. “We’ve got some time left on our current lease, and then we’re going to make the move when everything’s not so chaotic.”

Lambert said he is an Oak Park resident, so he’s familiar with the area and thinks the move to Galewood will lead to even more business success because of the neighborhood

“We’ re looking for a change, and we want to have our own space and no longer be renters and start building some equity for the company,” Lambert said.

Matthew Lambert, the business development manager for Tab Service Company, said the firm is leaving its West Loop office after 21 years and moving to the for mer home of Walles Music store in Galewood, 6846 W. North Ave. He said the move should be completed by spring 2023.

Lambert said Tab Service will move out of the West Loop in the spring after their busiest season, tax season, which lasts from January to February.

Lambert said Tab’s services include tax form printing, re porting to the IRS, document scanning and survey data processing.Lambert said Tab didn’t renew the lease of their West Side location because they could no longer enjoy a view of Chicago’s skyline.

A data-processing company is planning to move into an old record store on the West Side

“The employees and customers who come to that location – they are prospective customers for the other businesses in our district,” Alexander said.
