An initiative aimed at ensuring Black and Latino communities are not left behind as Chicago’s economy recovers from the pandemic has invested in two major developments on the West Side.

Austin Weekly News recently spoke with Jerry Warren, president of the Austin Veterans Community Organization (AVCO). Warren served in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968, earning a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. After finishing his service, he moved to Austin and then Galewood, where he raised his family. We talked about his experiences in the military, being one of Galewood’s first Black residents and what AVCO means to him.

On his experiences in the military My experience was kind of strange. I was raised in the South, where there was a lot of prejudice and stuff going on. So, when I got to the military, I was in the leadership role and in charge of some people who were still trying to run things in the South. That was a change.

On March 3, 1968, I was wounded [in combat]. I was hit with shrapnel. They told me they were going to amputate my arm and I protested.

‘No, no, no, no,’ I said. I came here with two and I was going to leave with two. At first, they weren’t going to give me the x-ray, but I kept insisting. When they gave me the x-ray, they decided that they weren’t going to give me an amputation after all.

Then, I had a choice. I could go home or I could go back. I didn’t want to go home, so I decided to go back to the field. Because I was a sergeant at the time, they allowed me to go back to the field. [By the time] I got to the unit, the rumor got there that they amputated my arm, so when my troopers saw me, they were very surprised.

I went on and served. I left Vietnam. I did the last six months in Fort Hood, Texas. Then, I came to Chicago.

Now, you’re afraid. And I’ve always wanted to see what I could do to bring it back to the old Austin, where people

wouldn’t be afraid to walk to the store, to leave their house.

I love Austin. I feel there are beautiful people there.

I think it was 1974 that I moved to Galewood. When I moved to Galewood, there weren’t many Black people there. But it has changed now. Now, they have a lot of Afro-Americans that live in Galewood.

It felt kind of strange being one of the first Blacks in Galewood.

All I did was get up, go to work, stay in the house and mind my own business. I remember, once, I was in my yard, and there was a Caucasian guy who came and said, ‘I would like to talk to the owner of the house.’

And I said, ‘I’m the owner.’ And he said, ‘No, you’re not.’ He didn’t believe me.

I’ve lived in Elmwood Park for the last 15 or 20 years. I still go to Austin just about every day, two or three times a week. We have a breakfast club. I eat at MacArthur’s and some other restaurants in Austin. So even though I’ve moved out, I never stopped frequenting Austin businesses and going to Austin.

They wanted to reach out to veterans who were all but cut off from the outside world due to the pandemic restrictions and let them know that they weren’t forgotten.

Due to the same restrictions, they couldn’t always deliver the presents directly, but the volunteers made a point to speak to every veteran they did see and find out where those veterans served.

AVCO was established in the summer of 2019 in order to raise awareness about the veterans, collect donations for veterans in need, connect veterans with programs and resources. Norman said that AVCO falls

under SANA’s umbrella and there is some overlap in membership.

They selected three senior housing developments to shower with gifts: the Lorraine Hansberry Apartments, 5670 W. Lake St.; the Senior Suites of Austin, 335 N. Menard Ave.; and the Crestwood Apartments, 525 N. Austin Blvd.

They also selected two nursing homes and an assisted living facility: the Mayfield Care Center, 5950 W. Washington Blvd.; the Austin Oasis, 901 S. Austin Blvd.; and the Symphony of Chicago West, 5158 W. Jackson Blvd.

West Side Kwanzaa celebration cancelled due to COVID-19 Malcolm X College was to kick off annual Kwanzaa celebration on Dec. 29

Malcolm X College’s annual day-long Kwanzaa celebration, which was scheduled to take place on Dec. 29, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., with a procession and drum call at noon, has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

A spokesperson with the city college confirmed the cancellation on Dec. 27.

“Due to the new COVID variant and out of an abundance of caution, we are cancelling our Kwanzaa event,” she said.

The annual event is one of the most significant Kwanzaa celebrations in the city. This year, there were supposed to be live performances and shopping, courtesy of local artisans. Performer include Najwa Dance Corps, Dee Alexander and the A Team, Armen Rah, Ugochi and the Muntu Dance Theatre. The event is always free and open to the public.

Kwanza is an annual celebration of AfricanAmerican culture that is held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. It was created by Maulana Karenga and is rooted in the African harvest festival traditions from various countries.

Kwanzaa, first celebrated in 1966, is based on seven principles of Kwanzaa, or Nguzo Saba.

These seven principles comprise Kawaida, a Swahili word meaning “common.”

■ Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.

■ Kujichagulia (self-determination): To define and name ourselves, as well as to create and speak for ourselves.

■ Ujima (collective work and responsibility): To build and maintain our community together, and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and to solve them together.

■ Ujamaa (cooperative economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.

■ Nia (purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

■ Kuumba (creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

■ Imani (faith): To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Carjackers are everywhere!

was raised with one of those wise old folk’s sayings constantly harped into my ears: “Even thieves buy Christmas presents!” And 60-plus years later, those words continue to resonate in me. So without fail, I get to this time of year, and I try to pay extra special attention to my surroundings. Carjacking is the number one worry of most people who are out driving. So when I turn into the alley to go to my garage, if someone else turns in, I’m not going into the garage. I also hesitate to put my garage door up, giving myself a moment to see if someone tries to come behind me in the alley.

However, thieves do like to spring out of nowhere, and that is what appears to be the case in what happened to state Senator Kimberly Lightford last week. She and her husband were dropping off somebody in Broadview when out of nowhere, a white Durango SUV pulls up and blocks their Mercedes-Benz SUV. Three people (no descriptions of those individuals have yet been released) jump out of the Durango and force the state senator and her husband out of their SUV and onto the ground.

Now I have looked at every news report and video I could find, and I’m still not exactly clear, based on the media reporting and even the police bulletin, as to who was driving their SUV — the state senator or her husband, Eric McKinnie. For those of us who’ve been involved in politics on the West Side, Eric once worked security for the politicians on this side of town. So for some younger thugs to get the best of him by jacking his car is very interesting.

The rest of the story as it was being told

is also confusing. According to the state senator, she and her husband were both forced to the ground, on their respective side of the vehicle. She willingly gave up all her possessions.

Then somehow the guns that were once trained on both of them were no longer on her, so her husband told her to run, and she began to run toward the house while gunfire was ongoing. It took over 24 hours for the police to acknowledge that gunfire was an exchange between her husband, who is a licensed concealed-carry holder, and the carjackers.

One of the questions that has yet to be answered is: Who fired first? Neighbors have reported at least 10 shots going off, and those bullets in that residential neighborhood did land somewhere.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that a CPD police lieutenant on the South Side at 95th and Western had her car stolen, and she was royally reamed for firing at the fleeing carjacker. So politicians don’t get a “pass” because of their position. If her husband initiated the shooting, especially over an SUV that turns out to be a dealer’s loaner car, then he should face consequences like any other person. And if he started the gunfire, he should be charged! Let’s see if the police tracked down the movements of this car and apprehend the culprits.

Springfield has been real quiet on legislation regarding carjackers. Let’s see if this high-profile case is the straw that breaks the camel’s back and thus some substantive legislation might be forthcoming that will address the carjacking problem with genuine penalties and prices to be paid!

On Dec. 17, they delivered the gifts for veterans residing in the three nursing homes, handing them off to their respective activity directors. Norman said that AVCO veterans were able to personally deliver gift bags to Senior Suites on Dec. 8 and Crestwood Apartments on Dec. 16. The later drop-off was timed to coincide with the building’s Christmas party.

“Recipients introduced themselves by name, rank and branch of service, and also gave locations of their travels and years of service,” Norman said. “The interactions were very personal and heartfelt. Before parting we took photos. The veterans all appeared grateful for the acknowledgement and appreciated our visits.”

Norman said that seven veterans delivered the gifts. The gift bags included donations from Illinois Senate President Don Harmon (39th), the North Austin Council, the Campaign for a Drug Free Westside and Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th), whose ward includes all six buildings and who is a veteran himself.

Due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19, the volunteers weren’t allowed to enter any of the nursing homes and Hansberry Apartments. On Dec. 16, they passed the gifts for Hanberry veterans through a

“In order for us to really respond to this crisis, we really needed to think about the recovery,” Castillo said. “Certainly, we needed to think about immediate needs like housing, access to food and access to cash.

But we also needed to think about the longterm.”

The program builds upon lessons learned after the Great Recession. Commerce began to recover and the economy strengthened, but millions of Black and Latino Americans were still suffering from joblessness, low wages and housing instability, Castillo said.

“The last recession, we didn’t see home values come back. We didn’t see investment in our neighborhoods as the economy recovered. We didn’t even see salaries for Black and Latino people recover at the same pace as their white counterparts,” Castillo said.

To promote an equitable recovery, We Rise Together invested in high-impact developments that can become “a community anchor” for their neighborhoods, Castillo said. The program prioritized organizations with plans that were driven by community input that were “ready to take their projects to the next level,” despite being delayed or derailed by the pandemic, Castillo said.

The North Austin Community Center, 1841 N. Laramie Ave., will be a state-ofthe-art sports facility that will bring afterschool programs and athletic opportunities to youth. The center is being developed in partnership between By The Hand Club for Kids and Grace and Peace Church, and it was designed by Present Future Architects.

The community center will also have a baseball academy, free community soccer programs offered by the Chicago Fire and indoor and outdoor athletic fields.

“The pandemic and what took place with the riots, our kids didn’t have hope for anything. We saw kids were hopeless. We believe we will give kids the opportunity to find some hope,” said John Zayas, pastor of Grace and Peace Church.

The center will be a gathering place for the community, organizers said. Since it will

host competitive athletic events, it will bring masses of athletes, families and spectators from across the city to compete against local teams, Castillo said. By drawing people to the neighborhood, it will be a powerful engine for the local economy, she said.

“Those small businesses surrounding that community center could be strengthened just by the number of people coming into the community,” Castillo said.

ter, and it will include affordable housing units, a bank, a children’s museum, a grocery store, restaurants and retail space.

Ogden Commons, to be built mostly on vacant land in the 2600-2700 blocks of West Ogden Avenue, was planned by Sinai Chicago, the Habitat Company, Cinespace Chicago, the Chicago Housing Authority and the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council.

The multi-use development was envisioned as a way of improving issues in the neighborhood laid out in the North Lawndale Quality of Life Plan, like housing, public health, food access and commerce.

“We know these needs exist. We’re hoping the broader Ogden Commons development will help meet all of those needs,” said Rachael Marusarz, the hospital’s chief development officer. “We also know that if we’re not partnering closely with community members and leaders and being directly responsive to the needs our communities are identifying … it’s not going to be as successful.”

Since there will be many essential services offered in one central location, Ogden Commons can have a catalytic impact on the local economy, Castillo said.

“People would start to come to that location. So it starts to drive foot traffic.

What that means is that the neighboring businesses, the restaurants, the coffee shops, other businesses start to see traffic drawn to that corridor,” Castillo said. “The small business community starts to thrive around that.”
