Central Park Blvd., in Garfield Park, sang songs that, nowadays, you’re more likely to hear in a PBS documentary than in person. Earlier this year, the churches combined worship services to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1966 sojourn to Chicago to fight the city’s unjust practices of housing segregation. King kept an office in First Church’s annex and would hold forth during hearings on unfair public housing at the church. U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (7th) during a brick-laying ceremony at Heroes Park last summer. The memorial garden is the work of the Austin Green Team. Each year, the Green Team selects the names of several deceased prominent West Siders to engrave into some of the bricks that make up the garden’s walkway.

he South Austin Coalition Community Council’s Green Team has planted dozens of gardens throughout Austin since the 1970s. One of the group’s most beautiful creations is Heroes Park, a public garden at the corner of Washington and Latrobe. Each year, several bricks along the garden’s circular walkway are taken up, etched with the names of late, great citizens and set back in place. During a ceremony last summer, U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (7th) put the Green Team’s efforts into historical context. When African Americans came to Austin, it changed from 80 percent white to 80 per-

cent black over a ten year period,” Davis said. “[There was] blockbusting, panic-peddling, everything that could possibly go on,” he said, recalling the process of massive disinvestment and disenfranchisement that occurred in Austin beginning in the late 1960s. “A lot of people bought homes cheaply, because the other people were running. The real estate people were saying to them, ‘You better sell because the blacks are coming.’ People now have homes that are worth $300,000 to $400,000,” said Davis. In response to the change, Austin organized, with an array of grassroots organizations evolving out of what

has become a decades-long struggle for survival and neighborhood renewal. Davis singled out the South Austin Coalition Community Council (SACCC), the social service and activist organization that serves as something of a parent organization to the Austin Green Team, for its decadeslong dedication. “The South Austin Community Council has been the most effective grassroots community organization in the United State and is still going,” Davis said. “When you talk about community reinvestment, you’re talking about Austin. The Austin community stands as a beacon.”

ocal finance doesn’t always have to translate into local banks and credit institutions. It can also mean local, citizen-led organizations doing positive things in the community with credit from national institutions. This year, the Neighborhood Network Initiative — a project devoted to improving the academic success of local thirdgrade students — was featured as a Wells Fargo Story on the national bank’s website and in its annual report. “As the westernmost community of the city, Austin is the gateway to Chicago for many,” Darnell Shields, pictured center left, of the nonprofit Austin Coming Together, the Network Initiative’s parent organization, told the bank. “We want our neighborhood to live up to the greatness of our city.” According to the Wells Fargo profile, ACT’s Network Initiative comprises “leaders from more than 60 Austin community organizations are taking a long-term, comprehensive approach to achieving that goal — understanding that preparing kids for success in school starts with access to quality early learning programs, economic opportunities for family members, and a safe neighborhood.” “By standing together as a

State Representative 8th District

Mohandas K. Gandhi once said, "I believe in the essential unity of all people and for that matter of all lives. Therefore, I believe that if one person gains spiritually, the whole world gains, and if one person falls, the whole world falls to that extent." During these turbulent and difficult times, I believe more strongly than ever in the concept of social justice: the promise that every member of society is deserving of equal economic, political and social rights, extending the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to every child, woman and man. Dr. King said, "Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice." Let's work together to bend that arc in the direction of justice... 8th District. communities: Oak Park Berwyn North Riverside Riverside

articipatory budgeting was a hot topic in the 2015 aldermanic elections. West Side residents have long wanted a say in how their aldermen spend the allotted $1.23 million menu money that can be spent at each alderman’s discretion on select infrastructure projects. Led by North Side Ald. Joe Moore (49th), several city aldermen have started to implement what’s called participatory budgeting when it comes to spending the funds. Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) was one of

A N S W E R

those aldermen. At several community meetings held earlier this year, residents of the 29th Ward were able to vote on which projects they wanted the money to fund. During the meeting, the alderman presented 18 possible projects, and invited residents who attended to vote for ten projects they liked the most. The installation of exercise equipment at Amundsen Park, a gateway community sign in South Austin and murals along the Green Line/Union Pacific

West Line embankment earned the highest number of votes. Other projects in the top ten include the installation of dog parks in ward parks, community gardens, a median in the middle of North Avenue, and historical and neighborhood banners attached to light poles throughout the ward. “I think it’s an excellent idea for the community to have an impact [on] what they’d like to see in the ward,” Taliaferro said. “That’s why I want to do it.” And residents are likely eagerly awaiting the outcome.

Rev. Joseph Kyles shares a romantic moment with his wife, Rev. Chrystal Kyles, inside an office of the Promise Church of Chicago, where they co-pastor.

Rev. Joseph Kyles

R

everend Joseph Kyles is glad to be alive. The 54-yearold pastor of the Promise Church of Chicago in Austin underwent a double-lung transplant in February. By Easter, Kyles, who had been suffering from complications associated with pulmonary fibrosis — an autoimmune disease that causes the lung’s tissue to thicken and scar, leading to acute shortness of breath — was back in the pulpit. “Rather than cutting through the breastbone, Dr. Vigneswaran made two smaller incisions on the side of Rev. Kyles’ chest,” according to a media statement released by

A N S W E R

the Loyola University Medical Center, where Kyles had the surgery. “This less-invasive procedure enabled a faster recovery, said Dr. Vigneswaran, who has performed more than 500 lung transplants.” But Kyles noted that, in addition to the state-of-the-art procedure, changing his diet and lifestyle — to say nothing

of his extremely positive attitude — were the keys to his rapid recovery. Before the surgery, the pastor had to lose nearly 50 pounds and in the weeks after the surgery, he noted that doctors told him to avoid eating out. “Your attitude, while you’re in the hospital and while you’re in recovery, is going to make a huge difference,” Kyles said. “I felt like I’ve been given a new lease on life and I’m excited about it. I want to share that excitement and exuberance with everybody I meet, now.” Health, after all, is more than the sum of one’s diet and exercise regimen.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago, our mission is simple: deliver world-class care to children who need it most – whether their families can afford it or not. For 90 years we’ve specialized in helping children affected by orthopaedic conditions, cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injury, and rehabilitation needs. And while expertise, dedication and generosity make it all possible, we believe our hospital is fueled by love. That love is what helped the Shriners network of 22 locations treat over 127,000 children last year alone, helping them at every step as they made the journey from patients back to kids.

A helping of Love

he West Side has helpings of culinary talent, as former U.S. Marineturned-entrepreneur and chef Quentin Love shows. Love, who owns and operates Turkey Chop Gourmet Grill, won Guy Fieri’s Food Network competition “Guy’s Grocery Games” last year. The 43-year-old won a grand prize of $36,000, half of which he donated to the Illinois branch of the United Service Organization, an organization that helps military service members and their families. Love donated the other half to the weekly soup kitchen he operates inside Turkey Chop to feed the homeless. Love credits his grandmother with passing along her cooking skills to him. “She taught me how to cook when I was seven years old,” said Love. “I was cooking breakfast and making cakes.” Addie Lewis, Love’s grandmother, said she taught him to be the best in everything he does.

Mission Statement At Providence St. Mel, we believe. We believe in the creation of inspired lives produced by the miracle of hard work. We are not frightened by the challenges of reality, but believe that we can change our conception of this world and our place within it. So we WORK, PLAN, BUILD, and DREAM — in that order. We believe that one must earn the right to dream. Our talent, discipline and integrity will be our contribution to a new world; because we believe that we can take this place, this time, and this people, and make a better place, a better time, and a better people. With God’s help, we will either find a way or make one!

WHAT RESEARCH SAYS “The academic demands of PSM are very great, beginning with the expectations that every minute of class will be used well and that students will not be spoon-fed but rather encouraged to understand material and take charge of their own learning and achievement.” —Dr. Michael Pressley, How A School that Works for African Americans Students Works, Journal of Educational Psychology (2004) “Highlighted cultural traits of Providence St. Mel School: a strong belief that [school] culture determines outcomes, a nurturing but demanding culture, and a culture committed to student success.”— Samuel Casey Carter, On Purpose: How Great School Cultures Form Strong Character (2010)

West Side Forward> is Bethel New Life’s strategic initiative to transform Chicago’s West Side by addressing poverty head-on. When we move 63,000 West Siders into skilled jobs that can sustain their families, we’ll reduce poverty by 30% and create the conditions for a thriving community to emerge.

CREATING

PREPARING

36,000 new jobs 116,000 residents prepared Supporting Small Businesses & Creating Jobs

Investing in Skills & Preparing People for the Right Jobs

Small businesses, entrepreneurs and the jobs that they create are the lifeblood of the West Side economy. Collectively, they will add 36,000 jobs over the next decade and form the basis of a thriving West Side export economy, fully connected to the Chicago regional economy.

Moving out of poverty requires a good job -one that pays a family sustaining wage. We are focused on preparing residents for industry sectors in the region that are growing, that pay a family sustaining wage, and that require an associates degree or less.

CONNECTING

SUPPORTING

87,000 job placements Connecting People to Jobs Being prepared for or having the right skills for a job are not the same thing as being employed. We recognize that the traditional job-seeking and hiring networks often do not penetrate our communities. As such, it is necessary for Bethel and our partner organizations to “connect the dots” and work to connect well-prepared residents to employers seeking those skills or qualifications.

63,000 permanent jobs Supporting People in Jobs Supporting residents in new middle skill jobs is very important. The reason residents sometimes fail at jobs is not because they lack the work skills, but rather, they lack knowledge of the workplace. Support and coaching for career growth and success is essential to assuring retention rates of 75% at one-year of employment and 85% in subsequent years. If residents leave a jobs, we want it to be for a better opportunity.
