Your Breasts Are Three-Dimensional. Shouldn’t Your Mammogram Be? 3-D mammography now at Rush Oak Park Hospital
With digital breast tomosynthesis technology, also known as 3-D mammography, images are taken from 25 different angles and are assembled into 3-D images. These 3-D images are reviewed by a radiologist, allowing them to see subtle differences between healthy and abnormal breast tissue. Several studies have found that using three-dimensional imaging, as compared to traditional two-dimensional mammograms, may be more effective in detecting breast cancer earlier, especially in women with dense breasts. It also reduces the chance of being called back for additional testing.
To schedule an appointment for a 3-D mammogram, call (708) 660-MAMO (6266).

e are pleased to present the new and improved 2017-2018 Forest Park Community Guide. Published annually by the Forest Park Review and the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce & Development, this guide contains a wealth of information on just about everything you need to know about Forest Park. Located just ten miles west of downtown Chicago, Forest Park is a vibrant, active and diverse community with an urban vibe, small-town charm and rich history. The cooperative spirit and civic pride shared between residents, business owners Laurie Kokenes Director and local government gives Forest Park a genuine, time-honored sense of community. Madison Street’s urban mix of independently owned shops, eateries and service businesses offer something for everyone. You’ll find neighbors greeting one another on the street and friendly shopkeepers who pride themselves on personalized customer service and making your visit to downtown Forest Park a delightful experience. From an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, escape room, women’s boutiques and paint-your-own pottery studio, to spa services, antique shops, gourmet chocolate and cookies with a twist…you’ll find just about anything you need. There are dining options to satisfy every taste bud at local eateries serving everything from Cajun, Italian and authentic Mexican to American fare, Thai and Latin-influenced small plates. Off Madison treasures include world-class ice sculptures, a fabulous steak house serving Forest Park since 1969 and ‘old school’ taverns throughout the village. Unique events, recreational opportunities and a generous choice of housing options make Forest Park a great place to shop, taste live and play. The Forest Park Aquatic Center is the coolest place to be in the summer. The local library, park district and community center have programs, classes and events for young and old alike. Community events like the best in the burbs St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the holiday walk with live windows, Rib Fest, Wine Walk & Shop and the Casket Races are events are not to be missed. An abundance of history will interest even the most serious history buff. The Haymarket Martyr’s Monument, Michael Todd’s grave and Showmen’s Rest mark just a few of the historically significant gravesites in Forest Park’s many cemeteries. In 1907 the Forest Park Amusement park was one of the most spectacular in its day. The torpedo plant where thousands of torpedoes were manufactured, the new 16” Softball Hall of Fame, a number of famous movie shoots add to Forest Park’s intriguing history. Check out the historical society for more history at www.forestparkhistory.org. Accessibility and multiple transportation options make Forest Park the perfect destination for a day, a weekend or a lifetime. The Forest Park Chamber of Commerce & Development is a partnership of local business people, civic leaders and community-minded individuals working together to promote business and a sense of community. The Chamber office is located in the lower level of Forest Park National Bank & Trust at 7331 W. Roosevelt Road. Forestparkreview.com

Chris Everett Owner, Everett Wealth Solutions Chris Everett has fully embraced the community of Forest Park, ever since her family moved here in 1997. She is a board member for the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Board and Historical Society. She has put down roots on Monroe Street and established her company, Everett Wealth Solutions on Marengo Avenue. “I love Forest Park. It’s such a cool community. There’s no pretense here.” Everett is encouraged by a recent influx of professionals and young families. She’s also seeing housing values trending up. At her own home, she believes in ‘backyards without borders,” with no Forestparkreview.com

fence separating the Everetts from the family next door. As part of their welcoming nature, Chris and her husband, Michael, host PepperFest for their friends and neighbors. It has the flimsiest premise ever. Nine years ago, they planted too many peppers in their garden and decided to host a party to distribute them. “Not one pepper lost its life that night,” Everett recalled but it was such a fun get-together, it became an annual tradition. When Everett was growing up in Chicago, she aspired to become a doctor but made a slight detour to star as a singer in a rock and roll band. Razazz was a jazz-blues band that played gigs five nights a week. Everett later left the stage, when she was offered a job in the financial services sector. She has now
been in the field for 30 years. Everett doesn’t just focus on her client’s bottom line, she has a holistic approach to financial planning. This can include using her skills as a family coach to promote inner healing. When it comes to finances, “We see what’s working and what’s leaking. We find money where they don’t see it.” After the client has a clear picture of their situation and understand what’s possible, Everett helps them implement a financial plan. “There are ‘aha’s’ at the end of the process.” Her company has three employees and is thriving from word-of-mouth referrals. “I love investing in my clients with coaching and fun events,” like a cruise on Lake Michigan. She may even give them fresh peppers someday. — John Rice

POWER GARDENERS: ANA SOLARES, RICHARD BIGGINS, AND DICK SCHMIDT AT EMPOWERING GARDENS.
Empowering Gardens The place to shop for plants and flowers in Forest Park is Empowering Gardens, 7730 Madison. It combines supporting a good cause with purchasing quality products. The garden center is a non-profit organization that provides jobs to adults with disabilities. It opened in April 2016 and is thriving. “Business has doubled in one year,” said co-founder Rich Biggins. “The village and the people of Forest Park have embraced us.” Local businesses have also embraced the garden center. Famous Liquors allows customers to use their parking lot, while Yum Thai, Starship Subs and Skrine Chops have fed the six paid employees and two volunteers. Forestparkreview.com

“We have the most enthusiastic employees on the planet,” Biggins said, “People fall in love with them.” Biggins’ wife, Maggie, would second that and said she’s seen the workers blossom. She is a volunteer fund-raiser, who is dedicated to “keeping our gates open and our greens growing.” Marissa Gott is another volunteer, who has hosted fundraisers and hopes to do some grant-writing for the non-profit. There is a great need for more funds. “We want to buy the land to start a foundation and build a greenhouse,” Biggins said. This would allow the garden center to hire more employees and operate year-

round. In the meantime, Biggins and his cofounder, Ana Solares, are grateful that Art Sundry, owner of Caffe De Luca, donated space for a winter pop-up store on Madison Street. During the summer, hanging baskets were their most popular item. As autumn approaches, mums will be in demand. They will have horticulture experts teaching free classes. They will also host ladies nights and hold Halloween-themed events for kids. As for their employees, the garden center is finding them part-time jobs at Forest Park businesses. Empowering indeed! — John Rice 2017-2018 FOREST PARK ANSWER BOOK | 15

The Krieger Family When it comes to tenure in Forest Park, few families can surpass the longevity of the Krieger family. Charles Krieger emigrated from Germany to open a blacksmith shop in the early 1900s, where Doc Ryan’s now sits. The town was still called Harlem, when Krieger built the house at 525 Thomas Avenue, in 1908. The house is still in the family, as Rich and Rose Krieger raised Megan and Ricky, the fourth generation of the Forest Park family. Their grandfather, Ernest, was born

here in 1907. After Charles built the house, he planted a large vegetable garden in the back yard. He also grew grapes for making jelly. He had a barn back there, which he christened the Sportsmen Lodge. It served as a gathering place for his cronies. Forest Park was close-knit and remained that way after Rich and his twin, Bob, were born in 1952. When Rich was dating Rose, they were walking arm-in-arm down Madison Street, when she noticed that every person they met greeted Rich. She asked him if he was just being friendly, or did he know all of these people? Rich confessed he knew them all. The Krieger family was well-known in town, thanks to his mother Inez. At various times, she worked at Homer’s Restaurant, Hallmark and Old Towne West on Madison Street. Ernest also worked in town, as a granite cutter

He recalled the Park Director, Jim Sarno, asked him if he “wanted to work, or wanted a job.” Rich said he wanted to work and Sarno became his mentor, introducing him to the addictive sport of golf. Rich and Bob were already star athletes at Proviso East, where the twins combined for five touchdowns in one memorable game. Krieger is proud of his family’s legacy in Forest Park and has no intention of leaving a village that means so much to him.

Vernestra Mines Altenheim resident Vernenstra Mines is a ball of fire. The 78-year-old, who calls the Altenheim home, has twice the energy of people half her age. “If you don’t use your skills, you lose them,” Mines said. “If you sit and watch the TV all day, you lose your life.” In her apartment, the TV is off, the computer is on and projects are scattered all over. She’s an active crafter, making greeting cards, fashioning jewelry and patching up clothing. “I walk every day and my calendar is filled with activities. I cook all my food and I keep my cell phone off.” Mines, a good listener, prefers face-to-face conver-
sation and often provides support to her fellow residents. Mines is a blessing to everyone she meets. But, she does protect her “me time” asking residents not to call or knock between 3 and 5 p.m. She enjoys playing games with residents in the evenings and keeps up with current events. “Sometimes I can’t believe what’s happening.” Mines is very involved with her church, St. Paul Lutheran, in Melrose Park. She has one daughter, Theresa and her grandson, Daylan, serves on board the USN Benson. “Life is what you make it,” Mines said, “You have to stay positive. God keeps blessing me.” For the vivacious Vernenstra, the glass is always half full. — John Rice Forestparkreview.com

At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago, our mission is simple: deliver world-class care to children who need it most – regardless of their ability to pay. For over 90 years, thousands of families with children affected by orthopaedic conditions, cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injury, and rehabilitation needs have come through our doors with hopes of finding the very best pediatric specialty care. Under our roof, those hopes are answered every day — by physicians, nurses, and specialists using the latest technology, innovative research, and a collaborative, family-centered approach. Escape Factor Escape Factor, 7228 Madison St., is one of the great places to play in Forest Park. Owners Jonathan Biag and Dexter Cura are thrilled by their success in Forest Park. “It’s been great for visibilvisibil ity,” Cura said, “We have so much pedestrian traffic.” They are even thankful for the long stoplight at Harlem Avenue & Madison Street, which causes a traffic jam in front of their store. “We get fifty percent of our business from people passing by and fifty percent from word-ofmouth,” Biag said, “Few have left without w hou loving ov ng the he expe experience. ence People Peop e aare e looking ook ng for o some something h ng fun un and d different e en to o do do.”” o

“It’s fun for everyone,” Cura said. “We bring together families. Teens and 20 20-somethings some h ngs ge get the most excited but it’s a multigenerational effort.” It’s ironic, though, that “stranger groups” do better than families. “They’re more willing to listen to each other,” Cura said, “They’re more focused and have lots of different skill sets.” The puzzles are not easy to solve and escapees have only a 20 percent success rate. Cura has a word of advice for customers, “Come before you start drinking.” — John Rice

Annual Brown Cow Trough Eating Contest For a real taste of Forest Park, it’s hard to beat the Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor on Madison Street. Each year the 14-year-old business holds its annual ice-cream eating contest that is the only one of its kind in the world—the annual Trough Eating Contest. Three person teams race to consume seven and a half pounds of ice cream. The all-time record— three minutes and forty seconds. The contest, which started in 2004 and is held every year in July, was the brainchild of a Brown Cow employee. The parlor was already selling troughs of ice cream for birthdays and other events, so why not make it a competition? “It’s very disgusting,” Owner Connie Brown said, “It’s like an old-fashioned pieeating contest at a county fair. Forest Park National Bank lends us their parking lot. And we have it tented out.” The contest attracts more than a hundred people and anywhere from nine to 15 teams. “Teams have names and costumes,” Brown said. “Some are company teams, like
Schauer’s Hardware. We get families, men and women and professional eaters. One year, two guys and a girl won and the girl was lactose intolerant.” Teams pony up $50 for the privilege and winners get free ice cream for a year. A cowbell is rung to start the frenzy and Matt Brown provides play-by-play commentary. Contestants are given glasses of warm water to ward off brain freeze. “They can use any utensil they want,” Brown said, “One team used garden tools. The contest gets bigger every year and they get faster.” Customers receive a t-shirt commemorating, “I tackled the trough,” with a phonetic spelling of the tricky word. Besides serving homemade ice cream in large quantities, Brown Cow serves homemade root beer and old-fashioned sodas. It also offers a wide variety of baked goods made from scratch. Customers can come to the Brown Cow for a taste— or a trough. — John Rice

Nello Ferrara Ferrara Pan Fitness Factory co-owner Ferrara Pan Fitness Factory opened at 1525 Circle Avenue in May 2017. The owners are Nello Ferrara, scion of the local candymaking family and his cousin Stephen Panzarella. Though they already owned the building, the partners launched a huge construction project in December 2016 to transform the space into a 5,000 square foot state-of-the art facility for boxing, Jiu-jitsu and fitness training. The New York Times mentioned the Forest Park facility in an extensive profile they published about Nello Ferrara. The article describes his unlikely hockey career, playing 11 seasons in the American Hockey League. Panzarella’s background is in boxing, where he competed at the YMCA and the Golden Gloves. “Our boxing program has outstanding coaches,” Panzarella said, “We’re also having great success with our strength and speed classes.” The facility ran a
six-week football program, charging participants $400. “Kids and parents were impressed,” Panzarella said. Training young athletes to succeed at the next level is the goal of the owners. Professional athletes are also working out at the facility, to train on pro-caliber equipment. There’s a banner of one of the pros, Green Bay Packer Chris Gall, hanging from the ceiling, alongside a banner honoring Tim “Buster” Stapleton. Ferrara is good friends with the former Forest Parker, who’s now playing professional hockey in Switzerland. He believes the Park District ice rink should be named in honor of the only professional athlete the village has produced. Ferrara has lived in Forest Park since 1999 and worked for the family business from 1997-2003. The former gym rat then embarked on his hockey career. “I’ve played in every league, except the NHL,” Ferrara said. When it came to starting his fitness factory, he took his grandfather’s advice. “Forest Park is by far the best place to run a business.” — John Rice Forestparkreview.com

West Suburban Special Recreation Association The Park District of Forest Park, through West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA), offers more than 60 programs for local residents with disabilities.
All ages and all ability levels are served in these therapeutic recreational activities. Many programs are similar to traditional park district classes, such as the association’s swim lessons, fitness classes and day camp. At these programs, a recreation specialist will adjust how skills are taught, how much personal assistance will be given and if any equipment accommodation is needed. Behavior management plans and other tools are used. Some programs require one-on-one staffing for a participant to be successful. Others are designed so that the competition is at a fair level, as in Special Olympics. For detailed information about WSSRA programs and equipment accommodations, call 847-4552100 or stop by the park district to pick up a brochure.

“People believed in me, when I didn’t believe in myself.”
Dr. Jesse Rodriguez D209 superintendent
Dr. Jesse Rodriguez Superintendent, Proviso District 209 Proviso District 209 Superintendent Dr. Jesse Rodriguez is uniquely qualified to lead the resurgence of the Proviso Township high schools. Given his background, he has the empathy to engage students, families and members of the community in the mission to transform the schools. Rodriguez was 14 when he moved with his mom from Puerto Rico to Milwaukee, where he says he was surrounded by poverty and crime. Rodriguez struggled with English but fortunately he was surrounded by mentors. Forestparkreview.com

“People believed in me, when I didn’t believe in myself.” His grandparent’s example formed his foundation. “My grandfather was a migrant worker,” he recalled, “He had the work ethic.” Rodriguez learned to work hard. He developed focus and discipline and completed his higher education. He became a school superintendent in Milwaukee. “As an administrator, I continued to learn. I realized how little I knew,” Rodriguez said, “Like the students, I’m learning.” At Proviso, he’s learned that students, staff, parents and grandparents like to speak to him in Spanish. “It helps me connect with the grandmothers. Grandmothers are

very important.” “I’m humble, yet confident, in my ability to connect with students from every background,” Rodriguez said. One of his many mandates was to heal the disconnect between Forest Park and the high schools. He is the first D209 Superintendent in ten years to visit Forest Park Middle School. He meets regularly with Superintendent Lou Cavallo and the other township superintendents. He also gives credit to the D209 Board of Education for engaging the village. “Claudia and Ned are instrumental in building our partnership with Forest Park,” he said, mentioning two Forest Parkers, Claudia Medina and Ned Wager, on the board. When Rodriguez isn’t putting in long hours at the district, he’s making the long commute to his home in Winthrop Harbor. To decompress from his demanding job, his hobby is fixing the house. He still marvels at how far he has come from his hardscrabble childhood. “I never dreamed I would become a principal.” His example will help Proviso students, who face similar difficulties, to hold on to their dream. — John Rice

Denise Murray Special Events Coordinator, Forest Park Community Center Denise Murray is the energetic Special Events Coordinator at the Forest Park Community Center, where’s she’s worked for 19 years. “My focus is on senior citizens but I wear many hats.” Murray, who first started as the
“Mommy & Me” program, said. “I started with babies and now I’m with seniors.” At its peak, the center’s Senior Social Club had 250 members. The membership dropped to 60, due to illness and death but now it’s over 100. “We love them like our family,” Murray said. The center provides myriad services for seniors, including monthly trips, with Murray offering guided tours. They also offer
local shopping trips to Tony’s, Jewel and Ed’s Way. Movies, bingo and exercise classes are all available to seniors. “It’s fabulous for their mental health,” Murray said, “We have seniors in their mid90’s who are active and healthy, due to the great lifestyle we provide in Forest Park.” The Forest Park Police provide a free “Are You Okay Program,” making daily phone calls to seniors. “We do our best to keep everyone safe,” Murray said. Murray lives within walking distance from the center, in the former Troost home, the oldest house in town. “I love my job and I love my town,” Murray said, “I never want to leave Forest Park.” — John Rice
