With so much to see and do in Forest Park, one stop is never enough. Whether you visit Forest Park to grab a bite to eat or to shop for that perfect gift, you’ll quickly realize that you simply must come back. With all the unique indie shops, local eateries and one-of-a-kind events, there’s always something new to discover -- and trust us, you won’t want to miss a thing. There’s an artist on nearly every corner, a fabulous live music venue, friendly neighborhood bars and so much more. And you won’t find a more welcoming community.
Recreational opportunities and a generous choice of housing options make Forest Park a great place to live, work, shop, dine and play The aquatic center is top notch, and the park district, local library and community center have programs, classes and events for young and old alike. Community events like the ‘best in the west’ St Patrick’s Day Parade, Garage Galleries, Casket Races and the Wine Walk and Garden Walk are just part of the reason people keep coming back.
There’s an abundance of history that would pique the interest of any history buff. Forest Park’s numerous cemeteries are home countless historically-significant grave sites, and you can tour the Haymarket Martyr ’s Monument and Radical Row with the local historical society The park is the home of the very popular No Glove Nationals Softball Tournament for 55 years and counting and the 16” Softball Hall of Fame Museum.
Accessibility and multiple transportation options make Forest Park the perfect destination for a day, a weekend or a lifetime. The Forest Park Chamber of Commerce & Development is a diverse and collaborative membership working together to make Forest Park the best place for all people and all businesses to thrive.
There’s an artist on nearly every corner, and the Forest Park Arts Alliance brings people together through the joy of art. Maker ’s Markets, Garage Galleries, Tellers’ Nights, stoop sessions and more are just some of the art experiences waiting for you in Forest Park.

Go Gr een, Buy V intage
Catherine Dodgson started shopping vintage and antique because she appreciated building her wardrobe with unique items, and she was looking for a more sustainable way to shop.
Now, as the owner, founder and stylist for her own vintage store — Dodgerie — she curates her store to offer shoppers one-of-a-kind pieces that showcase personality.
In recent years, more young people have taken up antique and vintage shopping, both for environmental and aesthetic reasons.
“I think a lot of people do appreciate both,” said Brian Shamhart, owner of Krenek’s Antiques. “Some of it’s the item itself and then some of it’s just the fact that it ’s reusing something that’s already out there, versus taking up materials.”
Shopping vintage and antique prevents waste by keeping furniture, clothing and jewelry out of landfills. Forest Park Emporium President Marlene Tap said one of her signature phrases is, “Go green, buy antiques or buy vintage.”
It also counters against trend cycles that encourage overconsumption and overproduction.
“That is one of the things with trends is that people are always trying to keep up with the latest items,” Dodgson said, “and therefore people are accumulating things that they’re just wearing a season, or these big brands are creating so much, and in that there’s so much waste.”
Recently, mid-century modern has made a resurgence in antique furniture. Because antique and vintage items are often of a higher quality than what’s made today, these pieces last for decades.
According to Shamhart, his
younger customers are less likely to buy traditional antique pieces like china, and are more interested in items like fossils and crystals.
Forest Park sports several second-hand stores, from thrift stores all the way up to vintage and antique shops like Dodgerie, Krenek’s and the Emporium. Shamhart said he tries to share all the knowledge he can with new stores in the village, because it makes Forest Park more of an antique and vintage destination.
Dodgson, who founded Dodgerie in November of 2020, received a lot of interest and community support when she transitioned her store from fully online to a brick-and-mortar store.
“I think you can just tell that there is a lot of excitement from the community, which I think goes to show how much people do really still love vintage,” Dodgson said. “I hope that there’s more to come for the genre, for the community.”

Fiona RoachWhether you’re looking for a laugh, a Shakespearean play, or to jam out to some live music, look no further than Forest Park. With new entertainment venues popping up in the village, Forest Park is shaping up to become a haven for the arts.
Forest Park Theatre, founded in 2021 by UIC Professor and Producing Artistic Director Richard Corley, offers free Shakespeare plays in the summer and is looking to expand to year-round productions.
“Theater really becomes a kind of anchor for the community,” Corley said. “I think the arts in general are growing pretty rapidly here, and I think people are starting to really respond to the notion that this can be a very vibrant artistic community.”
Fo r est Park, a budding enter tainment district Community Pr ofi l e
Whether or not the Theatre transitions to year-round will depend on the interest and support from the community, according to Corley, especially because it is a nonprofit organization. So far, Corley has seen a “tremendous groundswell of support” for the summer Shakespeare shows, but he’s waiting to see if that carries over to performances throughout the year as well.
decided to open BABS in Forest Park was because the community is so diverse, and she wants to make sure that “we get to hear every single voice within the comedy world.”
“I just love to be around people that are different than me and different from each other and get along,” Ramirez said. “That also happens to be a really good breeding ground for good comedy.”
The Theatre also offers after-school arts programs, and Corley is hoping to plan a young playwrights festival.
Emily Ramirez, founding owner and managing director of the new BABS Comedy Club, said that one of the most significant impacts of the arts is exposing young people to potential future career paths.
“A big part of people pursuing the arts as a profession is exposure to it and seeing that it’s actually something that you can make a living doing,” Ramirez said.
At BABS, Ramirez is hoping to create an environment of acceptance, where people can receive constructive feedback in a supportive way She said one of the reasons she
For fans of live music, Robert’s Westside on Madison St. offers concerts and community fundraising events. Donnie Biggins, founder and talent buyer for the venue, began his music career in Forest Park in 2009 as a singer-songwriter in the band Shams, playing with his friend Paul Gulyas.
After working for Fitzgerald’s and several venues in the city, Biggins said opening Robert’s Westside is a “phenomenal homecoming.” He said community members frequently tell him how excited they are about the venue.
“We’re at the beginning of something that can be a huge destination for the entire West Side of Chicago and the suburbs,” Biggins said. “We’re just at the starting point of building what I think will hopefully put Forest Park on the national map as an entertainment district and a space for tourism and for people to come to seek out live entertainment.”

Fiona RoachForest Park is home to several local, independent fitness studios that offer a tight-knit community and a more tailored approach than most exercise franchises.
Jackie Hines, co-owner of We The Collective Fitness, said that her studio aims to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible, accommodating people of all fitness and ability levels. We The Collective offers both yoga and strengthbased classes with themes based on each instructor’s area of expertise. Every class is different, according to Hines, because the instructors create the routines themselves, which is not always the case at large franchises.
Hines said the Forest Park fitness community is unique because it hosts a large number of fitness studios, but “each offers something different.” She and Charlie Grundas, the other co-owner, started the company in 2022 because they wanted to build an “intimate” and “community-focused” studio.
“Because our brand is so community-based, it made sense for us to be somewhere that would support that,” Hines said. “I absolutely feel like Forest Park supports that idea.”
Trey Bruen, owner and coach of Three Bears Fitness, said fitness studios like his offer an opportunity for personal growth. Bruen’s favorite part of his job is “seeing people change and transform, reaching their potential.”
“I believe everybody can change — they just need a fitness community and accountability,” Bruen said.
For Nello Ferrara, owner of Ferrara Pan Fitness Factory, the exercise classes and training he offers has been particularly helpful in fostering connection and encouraging healthy habits after COVID, especially for kids.
Ferrara offers Forest Park residents one of the best rates at
his gym, after active military and first responders. He said his business model is “high quality with very fair pricing.”
“Foest Park is the greatest village to have a business in,” Ferrara said. “My roots are in Forest Park, and I want to continue to do things for people in the village — especially the children — to give them resources that will put them on paths for greater things down the road.”

SThis data represents sales of single-family homes and condo/townhomes in Forest Park from March 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024.
Our thanks to the Oak Park Area Association of Realtors for providing these statistics.
■ Listing Price Ratio shows how rapidly the current market is moving.
■ Market Time is the number of days a property is on the market from the time it is listed until the day that it closes. In “nor mal” times, a seller might put their home on the market and expect it to go under contract within a month or two. Following that, it might take another month for the home to close. A market time of 51 days, as we see for Forest Park single-family homes, is not an unusually low or high number
■ Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio indicates the percentage of the listing price that a property was sold for. You might expect this number to be less than 100%, since buyers often try to negotiate discounts off the listing price. If the number is 100%, as it is in Forest Park, that means sellers are getting exactly what they are asking.

West Suburban Special Recreation Association
The Park District of Forest Park, through the West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA), offers more than 60 programs for local residents with disabilities. All ages and all ability levels are served in these therapeutic recreational activities. Many programs are similar to traditional park district classes, such as the association’s swim lessons, fitness classes and day camp At these programs, a recreation specialist will adjust how skills are taught, how much personal assistance will be given and if any equipment accommodation is needed. Behavior management plans and other tools are used. Some programs require one-on-one staffing for a participant to be successful. Others are designed so that the competition is at a fair level, as in Special Olympics. For detailed information about WSSRA programs and equipment accommodations, call 847-455-2100 or stop by the park district to pick up a brochure.

Fr ed Bryant: Business Owner , Mechanic, Jet Doc
Contributing Reporter
Fiona RoachGrowing up in Utica, New York, Fred Bryant built himself his first bicycle to ride to school. He didn’t have money for tires, so he rode it on the rim, making sparks on the sidewalk each time he went around a corner
When he was in seventh grade, Bryant moved to Kansas to live with his grandmother, following the death of his mother It was then that he learned to knit, and picked up other artistic skills that he uses today to make items for his store, Accents by Fred.
“I’d sit for hours [with my grandma] and we’d just talk,” Bryant said. “I learned how to knit, and I’d knit something and she’d go, ‘You got a mistake there.’ And I’d have to redo it.”
As he got older, Bryant’s love for making his own creations grew He served in the Navy as a Radioman for several years before finally moving to Chicago, where he worked as a teacher Eventually, American Airlines sent Bryant to school to become a mechanic.
Today, Bryant owns Accents by Fred with his wife, Ann Hanson. All their products — from jewelry to leather bags to greeting cards — are handmade.
As a mechanic for American Airlines,
Bryant earned the nickname “Jet Doc.” While he hasn’t worked on planes for over 20 years, the name stuck and is now the license plate of the electric car that he’s retrofitting.
Bryant ordered this car because he wanted something easy and small that he could drive to his store on Madison St as he got older But, when it arrived, he realized that the car was totally nonfunctional.
“It was just totally terrible,” Bryant said. “All the workmanship was terrible.”
He wasn’t able to get his money back, so rather than sending the car to the landfill, Bryant got to work on
it himself. Without any instructions he managed to get it running and is currently working on making a solar-powered charger for the car
Several people have asked Bryant if he can make electric cars for them, as well. While he said he’s not interested in making any more or starting a business, he’d be happy to teach anyone who’s interested.
