East tennis player makes state unprecedented three times Buenrostro likely ‘the best female tennis player ever, hands down, from Proviso East,’ says coach By MICHAEL ROMAIN Contributing Reporter
Three years ago, Janet Buenrostro made local history when she became the first Proviso East High School tennis player in over 35 years to qualify for the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state tennis tournament. At the time, Mel Phillips, a volunteer tennis coach at East who himself qualified for the state tournament in 1978, as a senior at the high school, said as far as he knew, Buenrostro, then 14, was the first female Proviso East tennis player to qualify for the state tournament since at least 1980. Now, three years later and nearly a year into an unprecedented pandemic, Buenrostro is still making history. This year’s state tournament in tennis may have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Buenrostro’s historic feat still stands. This year marked the third time in her four years at East that the senior tennis player has qualified for the state tournament. Conrad, who became a lieutenant in 2016, has been with the Forest Park Fire Department (FPFD) since Oct. 16, 1991. “Firefighting runs in the family,” said Conrad, whose father, Ernie Conrad, was a firefighter in Brookfield for 30 years. “Ever since I was a young boy, I would go with him to fire calls when he was called in ‘off duty,’ to watch and experience the excitement of being a future firefighter,” Conrad said.
His brother, Chris Conrad, is a firefighter in LaGrange. Over the years, Conrad said he’s found inspiration in many of those around him in the FPFD. His earliest inspiration, he said, is McDermott. “He was an excellent teacher, and throughout my years, he counseled me in many aspects as a firefighter, an acting officer, and a lieutenant.” Conrad also credits retired Fire Chief Steve Glinke as being one of his menSee NEW DEPUTY CHIEF on page 5
